‘Sew up those Pockets’As the weekend comes upon us once more, I will be looking forward to celebrating my half century – yep, the Big 50! Seems like just a few short years ago I was running around the local green with my school friends playing soccer and pretending I was Peter Lorimar or Alan Clarke of the great Leeds side of the 60s and 70s and as a 17 year old fresh faced ‘red arse’, joining the Navy - saluting the MAA on my first day, who wasn’t long putting me straight with a – ‘I earned my stripes sonny, I am a N.C.O.’. Within an hour I made the mistake of walking down the depot lines, approaching Training Division with hands in my pockets – out went a roar ‘sew up those pockets’ – I did and never made that mistake again. Happy days! I’ve had some great times in the past 50 years – met, worked with and have the privilege of calling friend, many fantastic people down the years and I would like to thank those who have influenced me and while there are many, there is one man who I will always be eternally grateful to and that is Billy Clifford, my former primary school teacher who arrived at Scoil Íosagáin in Farranree straight from teacher college at the same time I started my schooling. Billy went on to become school principal and while our paths cross rarely these days we still recount those days when we meet. So as I see out half a century I will certainly be making a few toasts this weekend and here’s to the next 50 years!

I held one of my Photo Workshops last weekend in the historic seaside village of Ardmore and what a fantastic location to create images. The weather was perfect and everyone went home satisfied having realised with a little direction, the talent and creativity that lies within. Thanks to Aidan at The Tower Hotel in Ardmore for the hospitality and thanks to those who took part in the Workshop – Mary Collins, Michael O’Shaughnessy, Barry Lynch and Marie O’Neill whose photographs I am looking forward to seeing in the coming months.

Congratulations to the Douglas Intermediate County Champions on their fantastic win last Sunday, unfortunately I couldn’t be at Pairc Uí Chaoimh but I’m sure there will be plenty of occasions over the coming weeks where I will be catching up with the team members as they do their rounds. Also, well done to the lucky local winner of the 9.5million euro on the lotto last week and to Breen’s on selling the lucky ticket. One man who gives up a lot of time in the name of community is Aidan MacSweeney who had that very fact acknowledged recently by The Douglas Lions Club – Well done Aidan!

Job creation key for Economic growth says ButtimerCork City Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer has called on Fianna Fail and the Greens to place employment at the heart of a new programme for government. Speaking to-day Cork City Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer said “Creating jobs and putting people back to work must be the key component part of the new programme for government. Employment challenges posed by the economic downturn have to be the principal focus of the new programme for government. The plan for the coming year must be to create jobs and restore hopes to Communities in Cork which have been particularly hard hit.Senator Buttimer said “The biggest issue facing the Irish nation is the creation and retention of jobs. We need to build and work on existing relationships with employers, industry and unions to maximise job opportunities and limit job losses”"I am calling on the negotiators for the renewal of the programme for government to place job creation initiatives at the chore of the governments plan. Sadly thus far we have seen no semblances of a jobs plan from government as hundreds of thousands of people are unemployed.” “I am calling for Employers, the social partners and the community groups to embrace both job creation schemes and the issue of pay and costs with politicians to more jobs available.”

Nice to Get a Compliment !Dear Editor, They say you get nothing for nothing these days but that’s not quite true because the Douglas Post is one of the free papers that’s very popular in Cork to-day and long may it prosper.I am a frequent reader and over the years it has been good to me but on the 25th September I forgot to pick up 2 extra copies for 2 pensioners who cannot come out anymore, but to my surprise there were none to be had on Friday morning at 9.30 in the 2 Shopping Centres. So rather than leave the pensioners without them I took my search a bit further to the Douglas Post Office where I met a charming lady called Marie Piper who gave me the last 2 printed. It made my day and also the pensioners’ day.So Marie and your team, take a bow because I know the joy ye bring to people all over Cork, and wouldn’t it be lovely if people every day remembered one thing.

We all have something special that never goes out of styleIt doesn’t cost us anything it’s simply called a smile. It can cheer the saddest person whenever they feel blueIt makes us all feel good inside and isn’t hard to do.So whenever you can spare one from your endless supplyGive one to the folks you meet whenever they pass by.

I remain respectfully Thankfully yours,

A Pyrrhic Victory?

Dear Editor The Cowen and gang have won Lisbon Treaty skirmish. Prepare now to lose General Election war. A classic move by the YES mob (and I question its legality) to include Treaty gobble-de-gook attached to voting cards. Many people unwittingly throwing out vital voting cards inadvertently throwing out the baby with the bath water. I informed people they could still vote without a card, but I wonder how many bothered. Shame on F.F.Cheer up real Daoine na h-Eireann. If not by Christmas, early in 2010 the real election will herald the demise of our persecutors and by God folks hit them hard!Keep the faith, mo cairde uasal! We will have an gaire deireanach!!Gura maith agaibh!!

Rude People

I work in a ‘front line’ job where I deal with members of the public. When I started exactly a year ago, I was excited. I love people and the sound of my own voice so I was looking forward ‘to the challenge’ of my new job. Part of my duties is to request background information from applicants and some of these enquiries can touch on sensitive matters. One ‘gentleman’ reacted badly to a letter I wrote to him. He came into the office and demanded to know why I was writing to him at his parents’ address since he hadn’t lived there in eight years. Luckily there was a two foot wide counter separating us. He seemed drunk judging from the behaviour and the smell of him. For the first ten minutes of the ‘conversation’ he yelled at me while I stood there waiting for him to draw breath. Having dished out my share of bad behaviour in the past I am no stranger to unreasonable behaviour. The only difference this time was my being at the receiving end of it. Not only that but all my colleagues within a 40 foot radius were witnesses to my unsuccessful dealing with a crying, hysterical, rude and smelly man.

My head spun with the humiliation. I thought I was going to pass out. I clutched the counter with both hands. After ten minutes of ranting the man collapsed into a chair and cocked his head to one side to hear what I had to say for myself. I timidly asked him why he put his parents’ address on his application if he didn’t live there. That set him off again. I waited for the storm to pass. I endured some more moments of sneering abuse until we ‘agreed’ to correspond via his new address and he fell out the door in disgust. He was gone. Subdued and thoughtful I returned to my desk. One of my colleagues looked at me in sympathy and said, “He only left himself down and if it had got really bad, I would have come out to you”. I decided I needed some air and went for a short walk. Outside in the daylight, I realised I was actually OK. The experience was awful but I had survived and I was fine. I also realised that the man’s verbal attack on me was not personal. He is angry with the whole world; I just happened to draw the short straw that day.

Since this revelation rude people don’t bother me any more. Politeness greases the wheels and gets you through even the direst crisis. When I encounter such people, I embrace the rude, the condescending and the arrogant for they colour my day with their stories. I am not advocating rudeness: it makes life even harder than it is but I enjoy it for what it is – someone else’s tantrum.

Ashton School - L-R Alison Ahern Junior Citizenship Award for the year, Lt. •General Dermot Earley, Mr. Bertie Smith Principal, Peter Catchpole Senior Citizenship Award at Ashton Awards Ceremony

Ashton School Awards Ceremony.Ashton School, Blackrock Road, Cork held their Awards Ceremony on Fri-day Oct. 9th, which generated anticipation, and excitement among stu-dents and staff alike. Guest of Honour, Lieutenant General Dermot Earley, Chief of Staff Irish Defence Forces, presented awards to students in recog-nition of excellence in many and varied disciplines within the school, includ-ing academic, sporting, spiritual, the Arts, school attendance, European languages, Engineering, Business, to name but a few. The Chairman of the Board of Management, Right Reverend Paul Colton, Bishop of Cork and Ross, along with staff and students and parents, leant their support to an important occasion on the school calendar.Lieutenant General Earley in his inspiring address, imparted wisdom and ad-vice in relation to the challenges and difficulties of life facing young people today. In particular, he asked students to remember that attitude was more important than ability, that motives were more important than methods, and that being courageous was more important than being clever. He suggested that a generous spirit towards the less well-off in society, was important in all aspects of life. In particular in relation to being willing to give our time, sharing our educational abilities and talents with others less fortunate than ourselves, Lt. Earley suggested this would be significant in relation to how society would evolve in the future. An inspiring address, which was received with warm applause from a large attentive audience. Students were then presented with awards for excellence in many and var-ied disciplines within the school by Lt. Earley, assisted by Principal Mr. Bertie Smith and Deputy Principal Ms. Ann Marie Hewison, with a warm-spirited, personal greeting for each student. The Derry Hipwell Memorial Trophy for Business Subjects was awarded to Brian McCarthy. The Des Deasy Memorial Trophy for Engineering was presented to Stuart O’Grady. Ciara Linehan was presented with the Cox Perpetual Trophy for European Languages. The Pfizer Perpetual Trophy for Student of the year based on Leaving Certificate Examination 2009 was awarded to Luke Naessens. For Technical Subjects, the Burke Trophy was awarded to Melvin Buttimer. The Corn Mhic Uistin was presented to Alison Cahill, and the Corn an Am-hairginigh for Irish was awarded to Peter Catchpole. For Hockey, the Sher-een Gokul Memorial Trophy was presented to Melvin Buttimer. The Ashton School Players Award for contribution to Performing Arts was awarded to Ben Meany. The Junior Citizenship Award was awarded to Alison Ahern, and the Senior Citizenship Award was presented to Peter Catchpole. Both stu-dents mostworthy winners, and the announcement of which was greeted with tumul-tuous applause. The Ashton Hall of Fame Awards were presented to past Ashton Students, Karl Burns, Mark Black, David Hobbs, Jason Black, and John Jermyn, each having achieved over 100 caps, representing Ireland at Senior International level in hockey. An amazing and historical feat by any standard. Sportsmen par excellence !

Grange residents concerned traffic congestion may worsen if Pinecroft development approvedGrange residents are very concerned about the impact of the proposed development on the site of the Pinecroft Inn will have on traffic congestion in the area. In March Cork County Council received a planning application seeking:

Demolition of all existing buildings on site including existing •Pinecroft Bar plus existing dwelling & shed adjacent. Construction of mixed use residential, retail, commercial •development consisting of 11 apartments, 3 townhouses, a 375sqm public bar over two floors, 6 retail units (75sqm), 2 medical units (150sqm) & 2 office units (70sqm & 82sqm). 108 parking spaces in an underground car park & 11 parking •spaces on a surface car park.

If approved the development would result in an overdevelopment of the site and is not in keeping with the surrounding residential area. It would also add significantly to traffic congestion in the area. I along with a number of local residents wrote to the Planning Department of Cork County Council expressing concerns about the proposal. In early May the Planning Department of Cork County Council wrote to the Applicants seeking further information on the development. They sought clarification on:

The design and appearance of the proposed development. •The car parking facilities. •The open spaces and recreational areas. •The danger of balconies overlooking existing houses. •The design of some apartments. •The impact the development will have on the Pinecroft sewer •system.

Local residents in Grange should be aware that the applicants have until early November to respond to Cork County Council's request for further information. Cork County Council will review the information it receives before making a decision on the planning application. A decision on the application can be expected before the end of the year.

Two years ago Con Hannigan from Ballinure sent us a lovely ballad

style poem about his locality. Ballinure used to be a quite little village.

It has long since been swallowed up by a growing city and the now

lame Celtic Tiger. Once again Con arouses the emotions by taking us

down his own memory lane and triggering off a trickle of nostalgia

with an uplifting nostalgic overture that touches us all.

BALLINUREMy thoughts go back to days of yore,

When I was growing up in sweet Ballinure,

And pastimes I knew when a boy,

Hurling and fishing and blackberry picking,

Sure to all of us was a joy,

When weather was fine during summertime,

We’d catch the birds with sprigs of lime,

Then from walls of houses in cages they’d hang,

And all day long their song they sang.

Then on Sunday mornings there was coursing and bowling

And over in Joe Keeffe’s there was a good game of hurling,

During summertime when on holidays from school

We spent most of our time swimming, as a rule,

And we’d watch the ships sailing down the Lee

Going to distant lands beyond the sea.

And how we loved the long summer day

When we helped the farmer to save the hay,

And to ride on the float behind the old grey mare,

A, sure they were the days when we hadn’t a care.

In autumn when the harvest was ready for

threshing was the greatest time of the year,

And excitement ran high as the thresher arrived

With the steam engine puffing smoke in the air.

Next came Christmas that brought joy to us all ,

With holly and ivy hanging from the wall,

We’d have curnie cake and rasa, and lovely plum pud’

A sure they were they days when everything seemed good.

Then on the day after our savior was born

The Wren Boys would come on Stephen’s morn,

And then when the festive time was over,

‘Twas back to school for us all once more.

Ballinure boys were hurlers and bright pupils at school

And when it came to the test were always first as a rule,

So now looking back on those days of yore,

They were happy times in sweet Ballinure.

Cllr. Kieran McCarthy

Celebrating Cork’s Past

Over forty Cork historical societies and groups will gather for an all day exhibition at the Millennium Hall, Cork City Hall on Tuesday 20 October to celebrate Cork’s past. Exhibitors from the Gaeltacht regions of the county to the inner city will present panels outlining their local history. This is the first time that such as venture has been attempted. The day long exhibition aims to present an afternoon of talks and chat bringing a cross section of Cork’s finest historians and ‘caretakers’ of Cork’s past to speak about the Cork region’s history and memories as only they know how. The theme of the exhibition is celebration and participation.Commenting local historian and a member of the exhibition committee, Cllr. Kieran McCarthy commented; “We all live in areas where the past is all around. This history makes us who we are. The Celebrating Cork exhibition is about bringing historical groups together so that they meet each other, chat and share ideas so historical societies can plan for the future. ‘A fair Deal’ Nursing Home Scheme to Start 27th october By Michael McGrath T.D. The new nursing home support scheme, known as ‘A Fair Deal’, will come into effect on 27th October. The Nursing Homes Support Scheme Act 2009 was signed into law on the 1st July 2009 and will now be open to applications from 27th October. The scheme is designed to remove real financial hardship from many individuals and their families who, under the current system of Nursing Home Subvention, often have to sell or re-mortgage homes to pay for the cost of nursing home care. The scheme aims to ensure that no-one has to sell their home during their lifetime to pay for their care. Individuals already in receipt of subvention may opt to transfer to the new scheme or may retain their existing arrangements if they so wish. Under ‘A Fair Deal’: An elderly person will make a contribution towards the cost of their care based on their means. The State will pay the balance, in both public and private nursing homes. Family members will not have to provide cash from their own incomes to pay for care. The maximum charge the State will have on the elderly person’s home is 15%.

If you would like an information leaflet on the scheme, a question and answer document, examples of payments under the scheme and an application form, please let me know and I will provide these to you. The HSE infoline is available from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8pm on 1850 24 1850 for any further queries on this scheme.

CARAThe Carrigaline Active Retied Association spent a most enjoyable afternoon in the company of two local musicians in the pleasant surroundings of the Carrigaline Library last Thursday October 8th. All CARA members were given a great welcome by Librarian, Dave Treacy and treated to afternoon tea and biscuits. CARA were then joined by Tim O’Leary on flute and Donal Power on guitar who provided great entertainment with song, music and stories. Tim sang in Japanese, English agus as Gaeilge and played beautiful slow airs and dance music on the flute. Donal led the gathering in popular songs that all joined in with. Donal is a songwriter and recording artist so he also sang some of his own compositions. Both Donal and Tim who are also retired sing in the Church Folk Groups. This Thursday, October 15th John Cummins of Stone Wall Garden Centre will give a talk on winter planting. Also on the programme for the afternoon will be games, dancing and singing.

ENJOYABLE CÉILÍThe October Céilí Mór in the Carrigaline GAA Pavilion was a most enjoyable occasion. The Macroom based Mort Kelleher family Céilí Band were celebrating playing together for the past 20 years. Mort, Noreen and family were playing ahead of start up time and had the first set of the night on the floor at 9.30pm with 12 sets dancing the Corofin Plain. Over 20 sets were up for the Plain Set after the tea break while the gathering also really appreciated the beautiful selections of old time waltzes and ‘Shoe the Donkey’ also fitted into the night. The November Céilí Mór is on Saturday 14th November and is guaranteed to be another great night with the popular Tim Joe & Ann sure to attract a great crowd.

WELL SUPPORTEDThe annual church gate collection in Carrigaline in aid of the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association was taken up at all masses over the weekend and was very well supported. A total of €1,764.40 was collected and the association sincerely thanks all who contributed so generously.

AFTERNOON TEA DANCEThe annual afternoon Tea Dance organized by the Carrigaline Active Retired Association takes place in the Carrigaline Court Hotel on this Sunday 18th October. The dance is from 2.00 pm to 6.30 pm. While members from other Active Retired branches are invited all active retired people over 50 years are also invited and welcome to attend. Admission is only €8 and the evenings programme includes singing,

dancing and of course an abundance of afternoon tea and cakes. To create another little bit of excitement there will be spot prizes and a raffle. Enquiries Noreen: 087 130 1122 or Barry 087 813 7990.

SCÓR CELEBRATIONSTo mark the occasion of the inauguration of Scór 40 years ago, a concert of celebration is being held in Éire Óg Hall, Ovens, on this Saturday night October 17th. A number of All Ireland champions and top class acts will provide super entertainment at this very special concert. The variety programme will be a showcase of Irish Culture with a selection of singing, dancing, traditional music, novelty acts and story telling. Ballycotton Lifeboat fundraising Committee Needs New members!Ballycotton lifeboat fundraising committee calls on new members to

join them for their annual general meeting on Tuesday, 20 October, at

8:30 pm, in Ballycotton lifeboat house.

This hardworking committee has a long tradition of raising large

amounts for Ballycotton lifeboat. Over the years they have seen their

numbers diminish which restricts them in what they can do. This year

they are sending out an SOS for new members.

Various fundraising events are run throughout the year and manpower

is becoming a critical issue. The committee understands that a member

cannot be available at all times, after all they are only volunteers. That

is why it is so important to have a large committee to fall back on.

New ideas are always being sought for fundraising events and with

new blood come new ideas.

The lifeboat service is a vital emergency service for our island nation.

The RNLI is a charitable service and fundraising is its lifeblood.

Ballycotton lifeboat fundraising committee is asking anyone with a little

spare time to share it with them. Committee members do not have

to live in Ballycotton but can be from anywhere with a little time to

give. New members are always welcome and if you are interested in

joining the committee but cannot attend on 20 October please contact

a committee member. If there is someone who does not want to join

the committee but would like to help occasionally would you please

contact Bláthnaid at 087 4151475 to make yourself known?

first day at school for first Aid Teachers:Carl Conneely, Declan O’Driscoll, Monique Janssen, Paul Sherwood and Karen Conway of Cobh, Co. Cork were among the first students to be taught by newly-qualified Irish Red Cross Instructors. The Instructors are the first to attain the new state-accredited Level 3 training from the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC). This year sees the Irish Red Cross celebrate its 70th anniversary of service in communities across Ireland by its highly-skilled First Aid and Community Service volunteers. The Red Cross has decided to further increase skill levels by providing higher-level First Aid training to its members and comes in the wake of a European report showing that Ireland has amongst one of the lowest-levels of First Aid knowledge in Europe, with just an estimated five per cent of people knowing First Aid in Ireland as against 80 per cent in Germany and Austria. “THE BREAKiNG PoiNT”Do you feel like you're getting old before your time? Do you wake up stiff and sore and seem to have more frequent bouts of low back pain? Or maybe that uncomfortable ache around your neck and shoulders doesn't seem to go away? Has your flexibility reached embarrassing levels to the point where you have trouble putting on your socks in the morning? It's easy to chuckle at this but the fact is many people let their health start deteriorating at a slow pace until they reach a "breaking point" and find themselves in trouble.

Here are two easy screening tests that you can do at home to help find out if you have a potential neck or back problem that is being neglected. To test if there is a problem in the neck have someone stand behind you while you sit upright in a chair with your eyes closed. Tilt or nod you head up and down until you feel you are in a neutral position. Now, have the person behind you hold your shoulders so they will not move and rotate your head as far as you can go to the left. Hold this position for a few seconds and then with the shoulders still held in place, rotate as far as you can go to the right. Have the person standing behind you watch how far your nose is able to go in each direction. Could you turn further in one direction than the other? Did you feel any pain or tightness with turning in either direction? Did you hear any "popping" or grinding sounds? If you answered "yes" to any of these, a more thorough examination may reveal the underlying problem.

Many spinal problems may be caused by a short leg or create the appearance of a short leg. To test this, simply lie with your face straight down on a bed with your arms relaxed at your side and hang your feet out over the edge so they point down. Have the person testing you level or flatten the bottom of each foot by applying equal pressure with the thumbs under the arches while the rest of the hand holds the top of the foot. Are both legs of equal length when the bottoms of the shoes are parallel with eachother? Is there a noticeable difference between the right and left? If you answered "yes" then a potential spinal problem may exist. Uneven leg length greater than 1/4" is a clinically significant finding and needs to be evaluated.

The fact is you don't have to be in pain to do these tests. Try them on all members of your family and be aware that most spinal problems start early in life. Isolating, detecting and correcting the underlying cause is the key to optimal health and performance. Are you going to reach your "breaking point" before you get your spine and nervous system checked by a qualified Doctor of Chiropractic?

Body Beautiful in East Village, Douglas are delighted to introduce the LED Skin Rejuvenation Anti Ageing Chair. This chair is the reason women don’t need to worry about the ‘dreaded fine lines and wrinkles’ anymore. It is a non-invasive tool that can greatly reduce the appearance of aging skin, including wrinkles, crow’s feet and mottled skin tone… and it works! Light Therapy is the application of light energy to the skin for therapeutic benefits. It is a natural photo-biochemical reaction similar to the process of plant photosynthesis. The LED (Light Emitting Diodes) light provides a proprietary light-wave design that penetrates deep into the skin to erase the appearance of aging, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, and crow’s feet.Research conducted by NASA’s space program has proven that LED (near-infrared) light therapy promotes wound healing and human tissue growth. The energy delivered by the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) enhances cellular metabolism, accelerates the repair and replenishment of damaged skin cells, and stimulates the production of collagen – the foundation of smooth and healthy skin. The treatment is non-invasive, painless, and requires no downtime. It is safe for all skin types. A safe and effective alternative to expensive chemical, laser and surgical procedures, the LED anti-aging chair is the most technologically

advanced unit on the market today. Designed to stimulate the skin’s natural mechanism to produce collagen, the machine treats the face, neck and hands simultaneously.Recommended Session Times and Frequency:• 20minutesessions• 2sessionsperweekforsixweeksor3sessionsperweekfor3-4 weeks (may vary for different skin types)• Onesessionpermonththereafter(formaintenance)For further information, contact:Sabrina Campbell, Body Beautiful, NO 2, Holbar House, East VillageDouglas, Co. LupusLupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems, including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart and lungs. Lupus occurs more frequently in women than it does in men, though it isn't clear why. Four types of lupus exist — systemic lupus erythematosus, discoid lupus erythematosus, drug-induced lupus erythematosus and neonatal lupus. Of these, systemic lupus erythematosus is the most common and serious form of lupus.

SymptomsNo two cases of lupus are exactly alike. Signs and symptoms may come on suddenly or develop slowly, may be mild or severe, and may be temporary or permanent. Most people with lupus experience episodes — called "flares" — of worsening signs and

symptoms that eventually improve or even disappear completely for a time. The signs and symptoms of lupus that you experience will depend on which body systems are affected by the disease. But, in general, lupus signs and symptoms may include:

Fatigue•Fever•Weight loss or gain•Joint pain, stiffness and swelling•Butterfly-shaped rash (malar rash) on the •face that covers the cheeks and bridge of the noseSkin lesions that appear or worsen with •sun exposureMouth sores•Hair loss (alopecia)•

Diagnosing lupus is difficult because signs and symptoms vary considerably from person to person. Signs and symptoms of lupus may change over time and overlap with those of many other disorders. For these reasons, doctors may not initially consider

lupus until the signs and symptoms become more obvious. Even then, lupus can be challenging to diagnose because nearly all people with lupus experience fluctuations in disease activity. At times the disease may become severe and at other times subside completely.

Lifestyle and home remediesTake steps to care for your body if you have lupus. Simple steps can help you prevent lupus flares and, should they occur, better cope with the signs and symptoms you experience. Try to:

Get adequate rest•Be sun smart. •Get regular exercise. •Don't smoke.•Eat a healthy diet. •

If you would like more information on Lupus, contact your G.P. or call Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 4366923.

Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower Garden Finish lifting and drying summer-flowering bulbs for storage. Finish planting al spring bulbs by the end of the month, except tulips, best planted in November. Dig up lilies for moving and propagation, and replant immediately. Buy container grown perennials, keep in the cold frame, and divide or take cuttings next Spring.

Kitchen Garden Start digging spare ground on heavy soils, leaving the surface rough and exposed to

frost. Cover remaining self-blanching celery with fleece, or tuck straw between plants. Plant garlic cloves in a prepared bed: or in pots in the cold frame if soil conditions are unsuitable. Transplant lettuces sown last month, toe cold frame or greenhouse border.

Lawns & Hedges Continue cutting lawns if growth warrants this, with the blades set at their highest; brush off dew first on damp days.

Greenhouse Light smoke cones under glass to kill insect

pests - choose a kind that may be used while plants are in situ. Sow alpine strawberries in 180C (650F), and plant out in Spring for a full crop next year. Box up dahlia tubers in slightly moist old compost, and keep frost-free. In cold districts be prepared to insulate greenhouses and cover frames. If grapes are still ripening, remove

some leaves to admit sunlight, keep the air dry and provide heat for late varieties. Isolate diseased plants undergoing treatment to avoid infection. Plant freesias in pots for flowers to cut in spring.

Water Garden Protect tender marginals such as gunnera with a mulch of bark or leaves, held down with netting. Thin out oxygenating plants, and add to the compost heap.

In General Tree seeds have limited viability - sow fresh in pots outdoors and expose to frost

Young @ Heartby Phil Goodman

Even though we are enjoying a late summer which is very welcome it is also the time of year to check our smoke alarms i.e. see if the batteries are still working and for anyone living alone make sure and have a personal alarm. The community guard will give a talk on personal safety and security in the home to our members in Douglas library in the coming weeks. The fire brigade have also invited us to an “outside” demonstration on the danger of house fires, chip pans etc. Also make sure and get the chimney cleaned as it is a very high risk factor. We are holding a bazaar and cake sale on Thursday the 29th of October from 10:30 – 1 at the Douglas I.C.A hall. We have some fabulous items for sale, if you have items that you no longer use or need in good condition we would love to have them. We do not need books or clothes, but we certainly need a lot of help with our cake sale. We are looking for scones, buns, brown bread, apple tarts etc in fact anything homemade, even homemade jams or anything that you think might sell.We have our Halloween fancy dress party on the 27th of October in St Columbus hall. If last year is anything to go on the competition for the prizes will be fierce and we can all enjoy a great night? As you know our members knit beautiful baby outfits for the premature babies in the C.U.H. on the 20TH of October the nurses that care for these babies will pay us a visit in the library to collect the latest contributions which our members have made. Beautiful maternal coats, blankets etc it is a privilege to help in any way we can, we now call our classes “knit and natter” and anyone interested to join us in the library on Tuesdays at 2 – 4 are more than welcome. We also have a team of volunteers visiting our local nursing homes where the residents look forward to their classes, but we still need more volunteers to help with this very worthwhile and rewarding project. On Monday the 19th we will have our high-tea in O’ Sullivan followed by our trip to see the phantom and the musicals in the Cork Opera house, and there will be a bus leaving from Douglas for this occasion. Carragaline active retired are holding their annual tea – dance on Sunday the 18th of October in the carragline court hotel at 3 O’ clock, where you can dance the evening away and enjoy the lovely tea. Tickets are 8 Euros just give me a call on 4363867.

Tá Carachtair Tábhachtach ar an gCarraig Dhubh!

Má théann tú ag spaisteoireacht mórthimpeall na Carraige Dubha in oirthir chathair Chorcaí tráthnóna ar bith feicfidh tú buíon beag fir ag seasamh timpeall sa chuan ann ag plé cúrsaí an tsaoil. Is ón gCarraigh Dhubh do thriúir nó do cheathrar daoibh agus ní théann lá thart nach mbailíonn siad lena chéile sa chuan.Iar-iascaire is ea duine daoibh go bhfuil a chosa in airde aige leis na blianta – anois tá sé ós cionn seachtó cúig bliain d’aois agus cuma air nach bhfuil sé ach ina bhuachaill óg fós.Carachtair iad uile.Tógann siad orthu scéalta móra an lae bíodh siad ina scéalta domhanda, Eorpaigh, náisiúnta nó áitiúla, agus cé nach n-éiríonn leo réiteach a fháil ar gach scéal is minic go ‘sáraímid na hachrainn uile’, mar a dúirt duine amháin daoibh liom ar na mallaibh.Cairde saol is ea iad – chaitheadar seal ar scoil le chéile, ag imirt spóirt i raon mhaith eagraíochtaí spóirt, ag obair lena chéile agus ag iascaigh lena chéile fadó nuair ba cheird den scoth é an iascaireacht agus nuair a bhí tionscal láidir ar an gCarraig Dhubh fadó.Má tá eolas uait ar cad atá ag titim amach sa cheantair, is acu san atá an t-eolas céanna.Tá dream mar iad le fáil i neart bailte beaga mórthimpeall na tíre, agus de réir mar a thagann forbairt ar cheantracha go háraithe nuair a thagann fás ar dhaonra na háiteanna chéanna cailltear daoine is carachtair mar iad.Bhí mé ag féachaint ar chlár cócaireachta ón bhFrainc ar RTE an lá cheana nuair a thaispeáin siad grúpa daoine áitiúla i mbaile beag gan ainm i ndeisceart na Fraince agus iad ag imirt cluiche ‘náisiúnta’ ar an sráid (nó ar chearnóg lárnach an bhaile) – agus is maith is cuimhin liom nuair a bhí mé féin ar saoire sa Fhrainc bualadh le daoine áitiúla mar iad san a chonaic ar an dteilifís.Carachtair an bhaile – daoine áitiúla mar chairde saoil – a bhailigh le chéile chun cúrsaí is rothaí móra an tsaoil a phlé.Tá tábhacht ar leith ag baint le daoine mar seo, dar liom.Is súile ar an mbaile, ar na ndaoine, ar an gceantar iad na carachtair chéanna mar gur beag nach bhfeiceann siad, nó nach gcloiseann siad.Soláthraíonn siad seirbhís slándálachta den scoth don áit agus is mór an compord é sin.Lasmuigh den tábhacht áirithe sin bíonn na daoine céanna - ‘sé sin an grúpa beag ar an gCarraig Dhubh, ach go háraithe – go bríomhar is go héirimiúil i gcónaí.Cuireann siad gliondar ort bualadh is caint leo agus bím ag súil bualadh leo gach uair amuigh ag spaisteoireacht dom.Dar liom, is cuma faoi na forbairt a tharlóidh amach anseo don chuan nó do cheantair an chuain ar an gCarraig Dhubh (agus tá pleananna ag tógálaí mhaoine agus ag bainisteoir na cathrach don cheantair), chomh fada is nach ruaigfear leithéidí an grúpa beag fir seo ón gcuan.Cuireann na carachtair áraithe seo go mór le carachtar an chuain agus le saol na Carraige Dubha.Go fada buan iad uile!

Colm O’Regan has been in comedy for the last four years and in that time has progressed to being one of the up and coming stars of Irish comedy. He has played all the festivals – Edinburgh, Kilkenny and the prestigious invite only Montreal Just For Laughs. He has played all over Ireland and the UK and even as far away as Tokyo and Osaka!Colm’s TV and radio credits include the Paramount Comedy Channel (World Stands up), RTE 2’s Just for Laughs, The Lucy Kennedy Show as well as writing for and featuring on RTE Radio 1 and Newstalk as well as being invited to perform at the prestigious Leviathan political cabaret. This year he brings his first solo show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – HINDSIGHT.Dr. Dre has announced a further delay in the release of his album, this wont come as a shock for the many Dre fans who have already been waiting several years for its release. The rapper has announced that is impending album 'Detox' is going to be delayed until next year. Originally the album was meant to be released in 2004, 5 years on there is still no sign, but Dre blamed the delay of lack of motivation and his commitments to Eminem, 50 Cent and had the following to say, "Hopefully, I'll get it done at the end of this year, and we can hear it next year,"

Now, have you ever wondered how much a lump of your hair would be worth 'A Hundred Years From Now'? Probably not much to be honest. However, if that hair was once attached to the King Elvis Presley's head well, it would be worth a small fortune and could be one serious 'Good Luck Charm' for one fan. Well, after Elvis enlisted in the army back in the late 50's, a friend of his salvaged a piece of his hair and said group of follicles is due to go under the hammer in 10 days time. It's thought that it could raise up to $12,000. Along with this, there will also be a number of collectables on offer, such as signed records and some of his clothing. In other Presley family news, his grandson Ben Presley has just signed a new deal with Universal Music. The newly reformed Sugababes have already cancelled a gig. The new trio were due to play tomorrow night at the Scottish Royal Variety Show but due to their management and legal team not being on their toes, they have been forced to pull out. It turns out that Eurovision singer Jade Ewen hasn't had her contract to sign it yet, which means that the band was

originally booked as Keisha, Heidi and Amelle and payments were all agreed etc. But since now Keisha is not there anymore a number of legal issues have now arisen. This is proving to be one messed up reformation of a band in the history of bands breaking up and changing format. To some sad news now and the music industry was devastated to learn of the loss of Boyzone star, Stephan Gately, last weekend. He died while on holiday in Majorca with his partner, he was 33. Originally from Sheriff Street in Dublin, Stephen joined Boyzone in 1993 after answering a newspaper advertisement. The group had worldwide success before splitting in 2000. Boyzone later reformed for a reunion tour in 2008. They played Cork during Live At The Marquee this summer. Gately also enjoyed a successful career in London's West End, playing the lead role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour

Boyzone and Stephen, they've all been part of Irish life and far wider than that, the last 15 years, and so successful, so it's a huge, huge tragedy. It's so sad. He was 33 years of age, 15 years at the top, a fine musician, it's just a huge tragedy to Irish entertainment, Irish music and further afield as well.”We’ll finish this week with the statement from bandmate’s Ronan, Mikey, Shane and Keith:“We are completely devastated by the loss of our friend and brother, Stephen. We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen's family. We love you and will miss you forever, 'Steo'.”

G.A.A. foCUSSnippets from the Local and National SceneBy Pat HarringtonCamogieI recently attended an under 11 final at C.I.T. grounds between Douglas and St. Vincent’s - a hugely enjoyable game featuring excellent skills from both sides. As always there were some stand-out players. One young lady from St. Vincent’s caught my eye, either No. 15 or 18. (The eyesight is not good at distance) The girl went on some solo runs with the sliothar apparently stuck to the hurley – her control was astonishing. In the end Douglas won by a goal. Congrats girls.AttendancesIn 2009 attendances figures for intercounty hurling & football championships were up by 4,000. Any increase in numbers in these recessionary times has to be seen as positive. Prices were reduced in Leinster for some games. The Munster council was also doing a package for Cork vs. Waterford (football) and Cork vs. Tipperary (hurling) games. To maintain the increased attendances the various provincial councils along with Croke Park will need to revise ticket prices for next year.Book Signing TimeChristmas must be approaching as a number of books are due to be launched in the very near future. Brian Cody’s book was launched last week. About to be launched is a book featuring Limerick hurling which I understand will uncover a lot of negatives regarding the game within the county. Yet another book has been written about Waterford football and former Cork football manager Billy Morgan will have a book out next month. Another tome of which I’m aware is that of Dónal Óg Cusack.Intermediate Hurling FinalThis section of my article displays an obvious bias but please bear with me. It refers to the victory of Douglas over arch rivals Ballymartle in the Intermediate Hurling championship final. A prior commitment prevented me from attending the game and I sorely suffered on the plane from London as I awaited the final result. The last text message I received before take-off was 0 – 15 to 0 – 7 in favour of Douglas and as I still hadn’t got final score when landing at Cork the waiting was nerve-wracking. My thanks to all those friends who sent these text messages, especially Phil Tobin, Finbarr Murphy and Mark Barry.I am proud as Punch on this huge day for the club. Seven members of the panel had lost Minor, Under 21 and Senior counties in the past so the result is a major boost. This win is needed for all our young players. Hopefully the victory will kick-start a whole new winning era in the Douglas club. Douglas Abu!!!Talk to you next week,Pat.

DoUGLAS RfC NewsDouglas under 13’s first match of the season was against Christians CBS at Moneygourney for a friendly last Saturday morning. Big change for these young players this season as they move to playing on a full pitch and playing almost the same rules as the adult game, with contested scrums and lineouts.Christians raced in to a two try, early lead as Douglas struggled to come to terms with the bigger pitch. They settled down after a while and started to gain more confidence in the set piece, and were rewarded with a lovely try scored by full back Killian O’ Sullivan. Christians came back at them though and ran in one more try and conversion before half time to lead 19-5 at the break. Some stern words from the coaches at half time and Douglas came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, the team looked a lot more settled with scrum half Mark Swanton getting better ball from the breakdown as the forwards rucked well, and the ball moved out the back line faster. Wing Ian Kiely received the ball from one such move and ran half the pitch to touchdown under the posts, leaving an easy conversion to follow. Christians kept the pressure up though and sneaked in another try after some poor defensive play by Douglas. The front row were fired up at this stage and hooker Darragh Mc Dermott burst through and off loaded to the wing before recycling the ball again from a ruck, and crashing over the line for a well earned try. Final score was 26-17 to Christians but on the whole a good performance from Douglas in their first outing. There’s some work to be done in the Wednesday night training sessions but this team shows promise for the season ahead. Their next fixture is away to Kinsale on Friday night 16th at 6pm in the U13 League.Elsewhere the U15’s and U19’s had a weekend off, while the U-17s lost to Dolphin in Musgrave Park on Saturday in the league. The senior team were due to play Dungarvan last Sunday at Moneygourney in their first league match of the season, but the game was called off due to a “no-show” by the referee! For up to date news check out the website www.douglasrfc.com and don’t miss training during the week!

fr mathews Basketball ClubGirls continue their good start to seasonOur juvenile girls teams continued their ex-cellent start to the season with three impres-sive wins on Saturday in Douglas Community School. U10 League: Fr Mathews 33 – 17 CrosshavenOur U10’s were first out of the blocks. A very solid performance from our young girls saw them take an early lead, a lead they would not relinquish. The team was led by Maeve McCa-rthy who was unstoppable going to the basket and Abby Barrett who was superb under the boards dominating the defensive rebounds. Aishling Gibbons controlled the game from the point guard position as Mathews led by 3 points at the half. In the second half Cross-haven could not cope with the fast braking of Aine Fitzgerald as Mathews ran out comfort-able winners at the buzzer. U14C League: Fr Mathews 38 – 28 Cross-havenNext up was coach Mark Foley’s under 14C team. This team is improving each time they take to the court and are now boasting a 4 – 1 win – loss record so far this season. They combine strength in defence with some excel-lent ability to score vital baskets on offence. This was demonstrated during this very com-petitive match on Saturday. Crosshaven made

a real game of it as Mathews were made to work extremely hard for their win. Players to catch the eye for Mathews were the McCarthy twins, Hannah and Ciara, who were outstand-ing throughout.U12A League: Fr Mathews 32 – 24 Ballincol-ligOur under 12A team went up against a very talented Ballincollig side. It is evident from this game that both these sides will be challenging for honours at the business end of the season as Mathews came out on top of a very enter-taining contest. The difference between the sides came down to the fact that the scores for Mathews came from throughout the side. Young players such as Niamh Foley, Jennifer O’Regan and Heather Lynch were excellent for the home side as their defence and speed on offence caused a lot of problems for Ballincol-lig. Mathews are unbeaten so far this season at this grade.U12C League: Fr Mathews 21 – 39 Ballincol-ligA gallant performance by our young 12C team wasn’t enough to bring home the points un-fortunately but their enthusiasm and effort was a joy to behold as they fought to the final buzzer. This side is one of the youngest in the league with over half the team playing U10 also. They will have learnt a great deal from this match and will come back stronger from the experience. NOTE: If you have a boy or girl who would like to take up basketball please contact Pat at 087-7905049 or log on to our website at www.frmathews.net to learn more about our club.

Douglas Crowned Hurling ChampionsDouglas 0-20 Ballymartle 0-16From the first whistle Douglas, sponsored by Ryan’s SuperValu, played with the swagger of champions as pre-match favourites Ballymartle were blown away at Páirc uí Chaoimh in the final of the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. The genesis for Douglas’ transformation from contenders to champions in a few short months was founded on a desire to catapult the club back to senior ranks and once again rub shoulders with the elite of Cork hurling.Ballymartle’s bid for honours was thwarted by a succession of Brian Boyle saves which sucked the confidence from the Ballymartle attack. A forward star in the 2000 winning side, Boyle chose an opportune time to reserve his best display for Douglas. At the other end of the pitch the Riverstick club had no answer to Douglas’ brilliant Odhrán Mulrooney. Deprived the services of talisman Paddy Barry through suspension, Finbarr Bermingham turned to Mulrooney to fill the void. The decision was inspired as the Douglas man played like a modern day Timmy Crowley often favouring the direct route to goal even if it meant going through rather than around his opponents. At the interval Douglas led by 0-09 to 0-05 thanks to points from two points apiece from James Moylan and Mulrooney, four from Richard Murphy and a cracking long range strike from Alan Barry.Ballymartle reduced the deficit to two points during the second half but Douglas refused to wilt. Alan Barry was formidable for Douglas at the back and the Ballymartle forwards

struggled to cope with his raw aggression as he roared out of defence to repeatedly turn defence into attack. Eoin Cadogan delivered his usual classy performance while Colin O’Mahony and Barry Fitzgerald won the midfield battle. Points from James Moylan, three apiece from Murphy and Harrington and two each from Eoin Cadogan and Mulrooney confirmed Douglas’ superiority and four points victory. Frank Tobin collected the cup on behalf of his team mates and the celebrations began. On Sunday night Joe Lynch was carried shoulder high around the club hall while the players joined Billy Dorney as he launched into a chorus of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. Shane Twomey left the comfort zone of the pool table to sample the atmosphere in the pavilion hall while music aficionado Tommy Maher suspended his discerning tastes and instead succumbed to the D.J.’s melodic offerings.Proving again that Douglas is Cork’s undisputed sporting capital, Garrett Lyons, Aidan Cotter and Joseph McSorley of Douglas Hall A.F.C. extended their congratulations and proceeded to join the celebrations. Numerous members of the Douglas Camogie Club and Douglas Ladies Football Club were present, Eoin Twomey of St. Columba’s Hall called in and the Grangevale A.F.C. contingent was led by Leonard O’Donovan. It was indeed one of the great days and nights at the Douglas G.A.A. Club. The Douglas hurlers now have ambitions to win the Munster and All-Ireland Intermediate titles while facing the 2010 season with senior football and hurling teams.
