Hello, Happy New Year. We would like to give a joyous shout-out

of appreciation for the support we have received throughout 2015 from our funders, our Board, and the many volunteers and various helpers who have worked with us this year. Our thanks are also due to all our audiences and visitors who have supported us over the last year. We hope that you like this new look programme and that there is something in it to entice you back many times over the coming season.

It’s a very special year of commemorations with events remembering 1916 throughout the county of Leitrim which is a place synonymous with creativity, arts and culture. As a place that celebrates rich and diverse cultures, we are delighted that the 1st opening of the year at The Dock will feature an exhibition by young people from Leitrim and Roscommon which looks at our modern history and how the ideals of the 1916 generation remained an inspiration over succeeding generations. On International Woman’s Day, 8th of March, we will have a free lunch time talk with May Moran whose uncle Paddy Moran, from Crossna, Boyle, Co. Roscommon was an active participant in the 1916 Rising and was executed in March 1921.

Our new look programme is a slightly expanded one and aims to give more background and to tell the stories behind the artistic talent that visits and emanates from the arts centre. Our new website is now well used, and we have included a specially commissioned video which highlights some of the great things that happened here over Culture Night. We have included news from our two studio artists who have been here since early October.

Music Programme Highlights include performances by The Chatham Quartet in on 16th January, Duke Special on the 13th of February and, for those of you who enjoy traditional music, we welcome the excellent

Notify on January 27th and Buttons and Bows on March 23rd. On the 12th of April you can enjoy a very special performance of traditional Irish music as heard by composer Handel when he visited Ireland in 1741. Theatre Programme Highlights include performances by Beezneez Theatre Company and The Breffni Players as well as productions including the comic Charolais in March. Another excellent production to look out for is Sure Thing on April 21st. This is a fun and energetic two man tragicomedy about the perils of gambling. This has won more awards than most of us have won bets so it is definitely one to put your money on!

Our Education programme continues to grow and develop along with the very successful youth theatre workshops held weekly at The Dock. We have plenty of creative educational events coming up this season so do have a look and hopefully you will find something to interest you.

National Poetry Day is on Thursday April 28th and we will celebrate it with an acclaimed stage adaptation of Patrick Kavanagh’s The Great Hunger in our performance space on April 28th.

If you are a fan of comedy then you will be very happy to hear that the quite brilliant comedy sketch trio Foil Arms and Hogg will return to The Dock on Friday 11th March. It’s not easy to describe in a few lines just how laugh out loud funny, original and entertaining these guys are so we’ll just recommend that you buy a ticket and come along. We guarantee you will enjoy yourself.

We are saying goodbye this month to our friend and colleague Grzegorz Piasecki who is moving on to pastures new after almost 2 years working with us. Grzegorz has been a fantastic addition to the Dock team during his time here. We would like to offer him our sincere thanks for all his hard work. We will miss him (and his amazing problem solving abilities) and wish him every success in the future.The Dock Team

People, Places, Faces; A response to The Events of 1916

An exhibition by students from Carrigallen Vocational School and Abbey Community College, Boyle.

Students from Leitrim and Roscommon have been working, together and individually, to produce an exhibition based on their artistic

interpretations of the events of 1916. They have engaged with the many historical aspects which led to the events including the personalities involved in the planning and execution of the Rising and the social conditions of the times.

In the three galleries of The Dock they will curate and exhibit paintings, reconstructions, installations, drawings, comic strips, collage, audio, film and performances.

With the guidance of their teachers and families, the students from Carrigallen and Boyle will encourage audiences to consider the symbolic nature of objects which represent the seven signatories of the proclamation. Another installation will respond to the living circumstances of the time and has a particular emphasis on socio-economic context of the period and the impact of poverty on living conditions of children at that time. Another work will reference the children who died during the rising.

2016 finds the island of Ireland a more empowered place. A place of rich and diverse cultures, this exhibition is a personal interpretation by young people of our modern history and is an opportunity for them to consider how the ideals of that generation have remained an inspiration over succeeding generations.

This exhibition represents the artistic conclusion of their responses to the personalities of those involved in the events of Easter 1916 and serves as a document of a young person’s perspective of the many cultural facets of the period.

To celebrate the student’s achievements a special evening of events is planned for Thursday 21st January; full details will be published on The Dock website.

Presenting work by both Irish and American artists, including documentation and publications by M12

Studios, USA, this exhibition is curated by Linda Shevlin whose long links to The Dock extend back to 2005-2008, when she was artist in residence. More recently Linda has been curator in residence with Roscommon Arts Centre/Roscommon Arts Office, supported by the Arts Council.

Americana – Future Rural is an important exhibition which has been developed from time Linda has spent on residency with M12 Studio, Colorado (USA) and is driven by her interests in rural representation in international contexts. The subject of the exhibition comes from the increasing desire for an expanded view of land use and the commoditisation of rural space, the loss of wilderness and notions of displacement and replacement.

Linda’s curatorial projects emphasize the idea that the visual is an assimilatory process continuously at work in the construction of cultural, political, personal, and national identities. Her interests are in histories, and their intersection with the present, and in how traditions in art can be revealed through research in archaeology, history and ethnography.

Americana - The Future Rural will present the work of artists who bring into play memory, hearsay, oral and archival history and who make new readings of the past. Linda’s projects explore community identity, focusing on marginalised or under-represented rural communities.

A Knowing Nature

This exhibition brings together the works of artists at the middle and early stages of their careers. The common line that encircles them is

an individualistic, focused and determined pursuit of a personal artistic language. The exhibition looks purely at that pursuit through drawing, painting, sculpture and installation. Artists included are Julie Merriman, Chanelle Walshe, Phil Foley, Cliodhna Timoney and Anita Groener.

What raises us out of nature is the only thing whose nature we can know: language.

Habermas, Knowledge and Human Interests

The works by artists Julie Merriman and Chanelle Walshe includes the use of archival materials to research histories, and through conversations with various experts they explore the conventions of various drawing and painting languages. Merriman responds to the many languages of architecture, engineering, science, cartography and mathematics and examines how drawing is used to impart specific information. Walshe structures her visual language through documenting, drawing, and painting. Her work is influenced by ideas about consciousness, unconsciousness and in-between states of being. Her interests lie in the self-destructive and regenerative qualities of both earth and man. Phil Foley started his career as an animator, he is a member of Galway based Itsa Collective. His interests are in drawing, histories

and documentation. Cliodhna Timoney’s drawings can be seen as an accumulation of data and languages deriving from a number of sources, such as the history of painting and pop culture. Her objects and sculptures are extensions of these drawings. She uses overlooked materials in an attempt to translate the drawings and transitory nature of the drawings into a sculptural setting. Anita Groener was selected to participate in the Facebook AIR (Artist In Residence) Programme and has completed a commission within the company’s European Headquarters in Dublin. Ideas of home and displacement within modern geopolitical realities drive her artistic enquires. She makes paintings, monumental site-specific drawings, film and animations that she exhibits internationally.

Creativity at The Dock

Opportunities to get involved with arts activities, making and talking about arts and culture is a big part of what The Dock offers to

people of all ages. In 2015 we successfully expanded our education programme and introduced our first summer school for adults. It was great fun and a super way for participants to explore new interests and acquire new skills. We are currently planning a new programme of summer schools for 2016. This spring we have developed a number of workshops, masterclasses, talks and readings for all ages. The current focus of our learning programme is schools, pre-school, early childhood learning and the under 12 age group. Additionally we offer youth theatre for juniors and seniors as well as film for schools and active retirement groups. For adults we offer singing lessons, oil painting, wine tasting, masterclasses and life drawing sessions.

Schools VisitsWe are developing our work with schools, so if you or your child’s school would like to visit The Dock please let us know. We are developing material for guided tours and talks alongside our exhibitions. There are a variety of themes within our programme which are connected to the school’s curriculum and that respond to the artworks and activities on show here in The Dock. We intend these tours to aid in developing student’s research and analysis skills through exploration and creativity.

Padraig Sweeney’s Flute & Whistle Classes Padraig Sweeney’s music classes are amongst the most successful regular events at The Dock filling the building with the beautiful musical sounds of whistles and flutes on Wednesday evenings. Classes for 2016 resume on Wednesday 13th January. The classes are extremely popular so early booking is advised. To book please contact Padraig directly on 086 811 2871.

Irish Film Institute (IFI) Schools programme

We will be continuing our involvement with the IFI Schools programme which links films with post-primary curriculum. In autumn 2015 we had an event, that involved the screening in The Dock of the French language film Girlhood. This resulted in a large number of second level French language students and teachers attending. This IFI programme will be announced again this spring so- keep an eye out on our website www.thedock.ie for updates.

Cultural Cinema Cultural cinema is an area that has grown in popularity at the The Dock since it was first introduced in early 2015. Our initial intention was to provide screenings of classic films for active age and retirement groups but the regular screenings have developed into very enjoyable social events that have attracted patrons of all ages. We are keen to grow these events and bring even more people together to enjoy a wide and varied range of cinematic works over the course of the coming months.

Our 2016 season begins with a screening of the Iris on Wednesday 6th January to coincide with the celebration of Nollaig Na Mban. In this very enjoyable show the colourful fashion icon Iris Apfel gets the film treatment. Iris’ incomparable career started as one of the interior designers for the White House to become one of the top fashion consultants in New York City. Nowadays, nonagenarian Iris lives between New York and West Palm Beach along with her husband of 66 years Carl who turns 100 years old during the making of the film.

In February our offering is the classic An Affair to Remember starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr and in March we present another classic with a screening of Whistle Down the Wind starring a young Hayley Mills.

On April 5th we present Suffragette Sarah Gavron’s 2015 film starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham-Carter, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whitsha and Meryl Streep. The film is an intense drama that traces the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote.

Our screenings are at 11.30amand cost €5 which includes a cup

of tea or coffee on arrival.

Early Childhood: Baby & Toddlers Family

Mornings In 2015 artist Naomi Draper developed an art based workshop series for families with babies and toddlers that were held over a six week period. Over the course of the six weeks, parents and young ones played with sounds, textures and a range of other sensory materials. Through the use of a range of props, such as fans, and a giant house-like structure festooned with rustling streamers the participants experienced and interacted with art through play. One of the great benefits of introducing very young children to the arts is that they can have fun while they learn. This early interaction can lead to improved verbal communication and social interaction skills. It can also improve imaginative and problem solving skills. The environment created by Naomi for participants offered them a space to actively explore, to work independently and in groups. The programme was an extraordinary success with babies as young as two weeks attending and enjoying the activities. We are delighted that it will run again mid January to early March.

Naomi Draper is an artist who has participated on a number of residency programmes within a community and educational context. She is currently Artist in Residence at two public crèches commissioned by Fingal County Council Arts Office. Under 12’s:Art Studio;

Explore & Create For children under 12 years our Art Studio-Explore & Create is back for another 6 weeks with artist Natalia Beylis looking at where our artistic inspiration comes from and how ideas and concepts can be made into physical art. In this semester’s Art Studio we will delve into the basis of inspiration as a guide for our budding artists to discover their own creativity. Each week, children will produce a piece from a different art form, from painting and drawing to collage and sculpture.

Here is an in depth outline of the first four weeks of the course.

In Week One, we will begin by exploring the exhibition at The Dock and consider how history can often be our source for inspiration. We will discuss a handful of famous works of art that depict past events. Then we begin our own studio work with an afternoon of painting.

In Week Two, we will take a short survey of the most common materials that are used by artists and explore the different ways that we can make marks on the canvas using these materials.

In Week Three we will tour a new exhibition opening in The Dock galleries, “A Knowing Nature.” We will look at the ways in which the artists develop their practice from the initial stages of an idea through research to the completion of painting, sculpture and installation. We will begin to craft a piece from drawing, written ideas and collage.

In Week Four, Using our previous ideas we will create a sculpture and give ourselves the opportunity to see how our individual practice can develop over time.

In the final weeks of the course participants will pursue individual artistic interests with the medium of the their choice. Students will also be given the chance to talk about their work within the group, allowing them to develop confidence in the language of art.

Family Fun Days; Fold Fold, Fold..

Papers strength, tactility, and malleability is incredible and its uses are everywhere from the farming and construction industries to the arts and crafts. Every day and everywhere our lives are filled with paper in all its many forms; cardboard, labels, pulp, cartons, money, stamps, copybooks, coffee-cups and even insulation. These workshops are designed to get our young digital natives thinking and making away from their computer or TV screens over their holidays. They will construct and make objects and sculptures that maximise paper’s varied and amazing qualities. In this workshop using paper and other materials children and adults play, will learn new techniques in folding and constructing and experiment together by building small and large structures. Workshop facilitator Vanya Lambrecht Ward works in education, health and other community settings as an artist as well as running a small artist book bindery. She graduated with an MA in Contemporary Art at NCAD, Dublin. Her practice combines photography, sculpture, painting and book works. Her work is most often about perception and the way we look at and understand our environment.

Oil Painting with Laura Gallagher

If you wish to improve your existing painting skills why not try this 9 week oil painting class. Working on your own individual projects of your choice, you will explore the versatility of oil paint and expand your observational skills. You’ll develop techniques to help you gain confidence in handling paint, juxtaposing colour and reproducing form. A suggested materials list is available on request. Laura Gallagher is a professional Visual Artist who specialised in oil painting while completing a BA in Fine Art in Dublin Institute of Technology and an MA in Visual Art practices in I.A.D.T Dun Laoghaire. Laura is known for her patient and gentle approach with her students, offering good support and encouragement.

Word Corner Cafe Every second Tuesday of the month the Jury Room cafe is given over to writers, readers and beat poets. This is a space where new and existing voices come together and share their work and work which has inspired them. MCs for the evenings are Hayley Fox- Roberts and Wayne Frankham. Newcomers and old familiars are welcome to join in.

Drawing at the DockOnce a month The Dock provides a space for artists interested in developing their figurative drawing skills through short and duration poses. All sessions are self guided and take place on Saturdays from 11 am until 4pm with an hour break. Artists at different stages of their artistic practice are welcome to join the Drawing at The Dock monthly sessions. Artists must bring their own materials. A reduced price is available for those who book early.

Wine Tasting Social and fun evenings in the Jury Room Bar/ Cafe. Michael Davis has been semi retired in Leitrim for over four years. Following careers in sales he joined the wine business in 1992. He spent the next 25 years progressing his career and studying wines and spirits. He holds the WSET diploma and has travelled widely to wine producing areas in and out of Europe. Whilst being active in the wine trade Michael has hosted many wine seminars and tastings and prefers European classics against new world innovations.

Digital painting techniques with Gary Reddin

This is an opportunity to work with rising star Gary Reddin and to dive into the fun and fast-emerging field of digital painting. Over the two day masterclass Gary will demonstrate some of the techniques that can be used to translate your sketches and hand drawings into digital work. He will demonstrate useful methods in photoshop and its benefits for today’s artist bringing you through essential tools, filters, blend-modes, brushes, and colouring techniques. Gary will also be teaching how to use Wacom tablets, which capture your every brushstroke and enable you to use traditional drawing techniques in the digital realm. A self confessed colour and design addict – Garry studied architecture at DIT Bolton Street and now runs Gary Reddin Ink which provides design services ranging from architecture to illustration to graphic design. He is currently working with a client list of over 50 businesses including ‘Failte Ireland’ ‘Infacta’ ‘Prospect 23’. His company also produces and sells art online. http://www.garyreddin.com/

Oil painting with artist Ann Quinn Ann Quinn will lead a two day masterclass in oil painting for both beginners and more advanced students. She will cover many practical issues such as preparing the surface, experimenting with texture and different painting techniques, and gaining more experience with using mediums and colour. Participants are encouraged to bring photographic material that is meaningful to them to be used as a starting point for the work. Merging photography with memory and imagination, she will help guide her students to create their own personal paintings. Ann has exhibited widely throughout Ireland and New York, including a solo exhibition at The Dock in 2013. She graduated from NCAD in 2000 with an honours degree in Fine Art, Painting. FocusThe Poor Little Boy

With No Arms

One Duck Theatre Company is a new theatre company set up by seven Acting graduates of The Lir with a view to creating ambitious and entertaining new Irish plays. The company will visit Carrick on Shannon on February 3rd to present their inaugural production; The Poor Little Boy With No Arms. The play is a fast-paced, dark comedy-drama devised by the company with actor and director Mikel Murfi. The production is a Pavilion Theatre Co-commission supported by Elgin Energy and Fishamble: The New Play Company’s New Play Clinic scheme.

The idea for the play came about during workshops the company members were doing as part of their acting studies at The Lir over two years ago. The positive feedback they received at that time encouraged them to develop the work further and they then

presented the play to the Pavilion Theatre who agreed to commission it’s production through their bursary scheme. Further assistance in developing the show for this tour was provided by Fishamble:The New Play Company’s New Play Clinic scheme with company members including Longford native Liam Heslin working with Fishamble and Mikel Murfi in devising the show at their premises in Dublin.

The results of all this endeavour can be seen in The Dock on February 3rd. The play is directed by Oonagh Murphy with movement direction by Bryan Burroughs and we hope that you will be able to join us to enjoy the performance.

Here is a short summary to give you a sense of what to expect: Ruby arrives in Skibberceannigh, “The World’s Most Liveable Community”, to a warm welcome from the friendly townsfolk. However, life in this rural idyll seems too good to be true and while out walking late one night, Ruby comes across a mysterious man who has no arms. He tells her that the town discriminate against him and set him arduous tasks to do in the dark of night and Ruby soon discovers that this shocking treatment of her new friend is just one of the town’s many dark secrets…

Spotlight Theatre

We kick off our new season of theatre and comedy with some great favourites and some exciting new

productions. The Beezneez Theatre Company return on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th January with their hugely popular production of John McDwyer’s play Turning Mammy. It’s a comedy (with a few serious bits) and played to packed houses here in The Dock and all over the country when it premiered last year. We expect more of the same this time round so book early. A ticket will make a great Christmas present.

It’s with poignant timing that the Breffni Players present Philadelphia here I Come by the great Brian Friel. This is the play that put Brian Friel on the map as a master of classic modern drama. First produced at The Gaiety, Dublin in 1964, it depicted the pain of a close family living together as virtual strangers and as ever we expect a top notch production for Carrick’s long established Theatre Company. It will run for four nights in March from Saturday 5th to Tuesday 8th.

Later on in March we will be showing a play that looks at an age old tale of female rivalry but with a new twist. There is another woman and she is a cow, a literal one, a purebred Charolais heifer. Written and performed by Noni Stapleton, Charolais is a surreal, black comedy of love, longing and one woman’s intense rivalry with a Charolais Heifer. This is a great piece of new Irish writing, and it has received rave reviews. You can see it on Thursday 31st March.

On Thursday 21st April a new short play, Sure Thing, written and performed by Jed Murray & Eric O’Brien. The show immerses the audience into world of gambling culture in Ireland, the third biggest gambling nation in the world. Do you want to feel alive? Don’t you want to be a winner? Course you do. Take a gamble. This is a fun and energetic tragicomedy. Odds are you’ll have a good time.

On Thursday 28th April as part of National Poetry Day celebrations we will present Peter Duffy’s powerful theatrical performance of Patrick Kavanagh’s poem The Great Hunger. The production has been performed in the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris, the Cathedral Quarter Festival in Belfast and in over twenty theatre venues to popular and critical acclaim.

The Chatham Saxophone Quartet

Saturday 16th January

Runaway winners of Music Network’s Young Musicwide Award in 2012, this is a super talented quartet of young Irish musicians. They have repeatedly won plaudits for their bravura performances and versatility and eclectic repertoire spanning contemporary, classical and jazz genres. They play the full range of saxophone family members, soprano, alto, tenor and baritones that together provide a really distinctive variety of tonal colours The Chatham Saxophone Quartet pushes the boundaries of what we know the saxophone quartet to be and has appeared at Boyle Arts Festival, Galway Music Residency, the National Concert Hall, and the Twisted Pepper, and has recently performed to packed out houses at Dingle’s Féile na Bealtaine, Iniscealtra Festival of Arts, and Dublin’s Kaleidoscope Night.

Pádraig Rynne’s Notify Wednesday 27th January

The incredibly talented concertina player Pádraig Rynne has wowed the trad circuit with his group Notify. Centred on the wizardry of Pádraig Rynne, the band is anchored by Cillian King on guitars & vocals, Eoin Walsh on bass, Davie Ryan on drums and Cormac McCarthy on piano and keyboards. The Leitrim Equation 17th & 18th February

Featuring the work of well known composers alongside pieces not played in over 200 years, this Leitrim Equation show looks to the long tradition of music of Leitrim to trace a wider history full of colour, of love and loss, and of leaving and coming back. The show describes how landscape shapes us, how we live and learn, and how we find beauty in the smallest of things. The show is infused with a mix of traditional song and dance that reaches back into the past of the tradition, reflects a more contemporary/modern sound and also features popular iconic ballads which describe a particular landscape and time. Old tunes are given new life and arrangements, and humour, tenacity and vibrant life shine through music, word, song and dance.

Andy Sheppard Shakespeare’s Songs

Tuesday 15th March

A musical journey across Shakespeare’s stories. In the world of jazz Andy Sheppard is a colossus. This is a part-improvised and part-written performance and the music draws inspiration from Renaissance composers Thomas Morley and William Byrd. The trio unfold an extraordinary palette of sounds to conjure up everything from star-crossed lovers and the brooding Danish prince to the rustling advance of Birnam Wood. Andy Sheppard has composed over 350 works and collaborated with artists as varied as percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, violinist L. Shankar, pianist Joanna MacGregor, songwriter John Martyn and a myriad of leading jazz figures, including Carla Bley, George Russell and the late Gil Evans. In this Irish tour Sheppard will be performing music inspired by characters from Shakespeare in a sparkling dialogue with French pianist Guillaume de Chassy and drummer Christophe Marguet.

Buttons and Bows make their Dock debut. This influential foursome - made up of Jackie Daly, Séamus and Manus McGuire and Garry O’Briain - began its days with trad sessions in Kinvara, Co Galway, fuelled by a shared taste for musical adventure. And they still sound fresh, flamboyant and a bit different. Famous for throwing a new splash of colour into the traditional Irish music mix, the band’s repertoire still raises a smile at traditional music sessions in every corner of the globe.

Händel in Ireland Irish premiere at The Dock

Tuesday 12th April;

A sellout at the Händel Festival in Halle, Germany in June 2015 this concert is Caitríona O’Leary and Dúlra’s celebration of Handel’s travel in Ireland in 1742. Händel in Ireland presents Irish music of the time with songs & dances the composer may have heard at the time of his stay. Händel stayed in the great houses and would have been entertained by local musicians. He copied at least one traditional tune that he had heard (“Der Arme Irische Junge”) and his musical curiosity would undoubtedly have ensured that he familiarised himself with Irish music in all its forms. Caitríona O’Leary is known internationally for her intense and passionate performances of Traditional Irish song, Folk and Early Music. Caitríona has toured and performed around the world, including such venues as the Royal Albert Hall, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall and Cité de la Musique, and Dublin Theatre Festival, Belfast Festival at Queen’s. For this memorable concert she is

joined by a host of exceptional musicians from both traditional Irish and classical backgrounds including Donal Lunny, Kate Ellis, Éamon De Barra, Adrain Hart, Andrea Piccioni, Matthias Loibner & Éamon Galldubh.

Mundy Friday 8th April

Without doubt one of our favourite acts over the years has been Mundy who has been busy touring the US and also performing at The Royal Albert Hall. He performed for Barack Obama both on his Irish visit, and at The White House. Early in 2015 Mundy teamed up again with Youth, who produced his debut album, the critically acclaimed Jellylegs in 1996. Jellylegs yielded such hit songs ‘Gin and Tonic Sky’ ‘Life’s A Cinch’ and ‘To You I Bestow’ which featured on the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann ’s Romeo & Juliet. For this special gig he will play new songs and some old favourites.

The Dock CommissionsTouring & News

Our commission The Pipes, The Pipes premiered at The Dock in January 2015, and then went on

to tour as a sell-out show at the RHA Gallery for the St. Patrick’s Festival Dublin and another sell-out show at Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris last October.

Devised by pioneering DJ, music curator Donal Dineen and three exceptional uilleann pipers, Padraig McGovern, Leonard Barry and Maitiú O Casaide, the work included a live response by visual artist Lionel Palun (France) who responded to the music’s mesmerising soundwaves by conjuring live images that were projected behind the performing musicians in real time.

The commission presented an opportunity to celebrate the county’s strong tradition of piping with a fresh perspective, while at the same time celebrating this very distinctive instrument in its own right. The Pipes, The Pipes was an extraordinary opportunity to work with and appreciate the power, beauty and sound of the pipes and to celebrate them as a cornerstone of Irish cultural identity. It featured in RTE TV highlights of St. Patrick’s Festival, Dublin and received a rave review in the Journal of Music. The commission was funded through the Arts Council’s Music Commission programme. We hope to tour it widely in 2016.

Sokalo Atlantic Rhythms is part of Culture Ireland’s International Programme for 2016. The Dock’s production of Sokalo Atlantic Rhythms which reunites Irish and Quebecois Traditions, is to tour to Canada this Spring as part of Culture Ireland’s International Programme for 2016. The show was developed during a residency at The Dock last September, with the Canadia Zogma Danse who are re-defining the limits of percussive dance by blending the percussive vocabulary of the traditional Quebecois ‘gigue’ with the fluidity of contemporary dance. The residency offered Zogma a chance to connect their percussive dance style (which traces its roots back to traditional Irish dance), and work with three top Irish dancers, Edwina Guckian, Liam Scanlon and Caitlin Nic Gabhainn, who each have their own individual styles inspired by step dancing, set dancing and sean nós dance.

Quebec folk dance, specifically traces its roots back to traditional Irish and French-Canadian dancing. Solo dances like the Quebecois gigue emerged from a fusion of Irish sean nós steps and English and Dutch clogging, and was possibly also influenced by other cultures in Europe where traditional dances included percussive elements. In some cultures the gigue dancer is expected to keep a rigid straight and balanced upper body –similar to postures from Ireland. The celebrated Quebecois fiddler Jean Carigan recorded a variety of Irish dance tunes and many from Sligo/ Leitrim repertoire of Michael Coleman. The connections between Irish and Quebecois music was evident in the selected pieces performed by harpist Laoise Kelly, Quebecois fiddle player Marie-Pierre Lecault and concertina player Caitlin Nic Gabhain.

Our third Dock commission, Pause, by composer Jonathon Nangle, was premiered at The Dock by Crash Ensemble in October 2015. The Dock commissioned Jonathon Nangle to write this piece of music for Crash Ensemble and to incorporate a visual element to accompany the music, in addition to a gallery show exploring the interplay between music and visual installation. ‘Pause’ formed part of Crash Ensemble’s ‘Born in the 80’s’ show, featuring new music from Irish composers in their 20’s and early 30’s. The work has also been performed at ‘Tempered’, Belfast’s inaugural contemporary music weekend in November.

The Dock Studio Artists

Hugh McGettigan graduated last year from the Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dun Laoghaire with 1st Class Honours. His sculptural works are a playful balance of tensions. He has been working with readymade and found materials which show traces of previous uses, such as reclaimed wood. He has been paying attention to the qualities of materials and he is interested in sculptural equilibrium.

Over his time here Hugh has become interested in the form and nature of architectural spaces, in how they may be adjusted and reworked to suit changing visions. Over many years buildings like the Dock have seen periods of adjustments and reworkings. Each change forms an intervention in the architectural space, making what might be solid, fluid. Small or large marks or changes form the evolving spatial story of the building. This interplay between solidity and the possibility of adjustment are made to suit ever the buildings changing needs.

Responding to the many layered nuances of designed spaces, he proposes to create a series of modular structures and curate a group of artworks to be displayed in the public spaces at The Dock. His artwork will be a response to his observations about how the past functions of the building and its materiality becomes a documentation of multiple and various histories, and how changes and adjustments are a representation the imaginations and concerns of the buildings custodians and its users. cargocollective.com/hughmcgettiganart

specialism is wood engraving. She has exhibited in London, Dublin and throughout the U.S.A. and in September she held her first solo show at the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh. As part of her residency she is keeping a digital diary inspired by her experiences at

The Dock and the fabric of the building. This will be linked into The Dock website in the form of a blog, where she will post interesting snippets about the building, its architecture and history. Susan is a highly skilled wood engraver, and she will also blog about the techniques involved and the historical context of wood engraving and its significance in the printing industry. Susan is encouraging people to follow the processes involved from start to the completed print, and to see how she gathers information and inspiration and starts to sketch up ideas. On the blog you can see how she refines ideas, prepares and draws on the block, engraves the block, takes print-proofs and then makes adjustments for the final prints. Her intention is to give people an understanding of what she as an artist does as part of a residency programme. Through the blog and her work in The Dock she will be introducing a wider public to a printmaking process that is rare in Ireland and which people may never have come across before.Susan’s blog can be found on her website www.yewtreestudio.ie

Youth Theatre at The Dock

Two vibrant youth theatre groups operate within The Dock as part of the Leitrim Youth Theatre Company

framework. Leitrim Youth Theatre Company is a professional youth theatre organisation overseen by Leitrim Arts Office and dedicated to providing opportunities for young people who wish to become involved in acting and theatre. As a member of the National Association of Youth Drama, LYTC members have access to numerous national events and opportunities such as National Youth Theatre and the Young Critics Programme. While many senior members aspire to go on to careers in theatre or the film industry, it is equally rewarding for those who have no desire to pursue theatre professionally - and for everyone LYTC is a supportive youth network where members develop their creativity, gain self confidence and make new friends.

LYTC Carrick on Shannon consists of both junior and senior groups. The junior group is made up of participants aged 9-13 years led by Mary Blake and the Senior group of participants aged 14-18 years led by Catherine Sheridan. Company members take part in weekly workshops at The Dock covering all areas of theatre from performance to technical production.

Catherine Sheridan Catherine holds anMA in Drama and Performance from UCD, a Diploma in Drama, Arts and Theatre Studiesfrom NUIM, Maynooth, has trained in Stanislavski with The Theatre Union of Russian Federation, Moscow, with Anne Bogart and the SITI Theatre Company in Viewpoints & Suzuki training in the USA as well as and numerous master classes with theatre professionals in England, Ireland and Scotland. Catherine specialises in Drama Facilitation & Directing.

Mary Blake Over the past few years, Mary Blake has written original plays for her drama groups in the Dock. These plays have explored themes such as bullying, fitting in, racism, stereo typing and loneliness. Each participant will have an input into the writing and crafting of an original play including directing, set design, sound and light planning.

The groups have two new projects in the pipeline for 2016.

The Sackville Rats: a tale about a young band of thieves who used the chaos of the 1916 rebellion to loot and steal from shops they had previously only dreamt of entering. The children living in the tenements of Dublin during the 1916 Rising may not have been aware of the political significance of what was unfolding, but they certainly knew an opportunity when they saw one! Based on true events, the production is written and directed by Mary Blake, with Emily Sachs Eldridge and will be staged by on Tuesday 1st March.

In May the senior group will present Treasure Island in an adaption by Phil Willmott, directed by Catherine Sheridan.This is the first adaptation of Treasure Island with great parts for both male and female performers. Inspired by real-life female adventurers, Phil Willmott has changed the gender of several of the central characters without compromising the spirit of Stevenson’s classic novel. This swashbuckling stage adaptation brings out all the comedy and adventure of this ever-popular story. The effect of Treasure Island on our perception of pirates cannot be overestimated. Stevenson linked pirates forever with maps, black schooners, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen with parrots on their shoulders. The treasure map with an X marking the location of the buried treasure is one of the most familiar pirate props, yet it is entirely a fictional invention which owes its origin to Stevenson’s original map. The term ‘Treasure Island’ has passed into the language as a common phrase, and is often used as a title for games, rides and places.

Music for the Curious Ear

KALEIDOSCOPE AT THE DOCK THURSDAY 23RD APRIL 8.30PM

Kaleidoscope Night is a long-established and treasured monthly music event based in Dublin that was founded in 2009 by violinist Cliodhna Ryan and cellist Kate Ellis and is now curated by violist Karen Dervan and cellist Lioba Petrie. Within a chamber-music framework and on one stage, it champions the marriage of rarely-heard baroque, classical, contemporary, experimental and non-classical music. Typically presented in an informal, “club” setting, its platform has given rise to a new kind of listening experience in Ireland that The Irish Times has described as a “genre-blind mini festival” and a “life-saving, spirit-lifting pioneering cultural venture”.

To experience this magical event you would normally have to travel to Dublin but this April it will travel down to Carrick on Shannon and install itself in The Dock for one night only. We are very excited at the prospect and we hope that you will be able to join us.

In its simplest terms, Kaleidoscope Night’s unique format is essentially to give the listener snapshots of various different styles of music; ten minutes of some celestially pure Bach might be followed

by a short wacky John Cage endeavour. Twist the kaleidoscope again and some passionate Piazzolla may appear, or a work by an Irish composer, (maybe even a world premiere) with some traditional/jazz/experimental/folk thrown into the mix at the end just to keep the listener’s ears buzzing. And it is from the hands of typically four or five different groups or performers that this unique recipe for musical variety is delivered to the audience.

The motivation of the series has always been to take classical and contemporary out of the typical formal concert setting and present it in an accessible way so this debut of the series in Leitrim is open to everyone with a passing or a passionate interest in classical music or music that’s just that bit left of the middle.

The exhibition will present a series of monoprints and oil paintings of Irish landscape scenes, each accompanied by a flash fiction story. Tobias started writing flash fiction in 2011, drawn to the stylised and highly-crafted nature of such a short story-telling format. Jean-Louis’ monoprints and paintings draw on his natural surroundings in the West of Ireland where he has lived for over twenty years.

The beginning of a full year starts off with the very busy and popular Junior art Exhibition , not just National Schools in Leitrim but now including 2nd level schools as well. The exhibition following is still waiting for a decision as to the artist ! Following this, Solas is delighted to have Kinlough artist Brigid Birney with her first Solo exhibition here. Her work is well known in her own area, Donegal and Enniskillen and this will be an opportunity to enjoy the full range of her uplifting paintings. Two artists, Cathy Reynolds and Amna Kiran are dividing the gallery for 2 solo shows. Cathy is always surprising us with new subjects and styles, always something to look forward to and Amna, living in Cavan, delights the eye with her colourful and intricate images influenced by her background.

It is aimed at Irish speakers of all levels (and none!), most films will be subtitled in English and most have a Q&A or panel discussion with the filmmaker.

Exhibitions January-April 2016North West Winter (Christmas) Open

The North West Opens provide opportunities for artists and creative practitioners based in the North West counties to exhibit twice a year (Summer and Winter) and promote their work at the Sculpture Centre. The Counties included are Mayo, Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo, Donegal, Fermanagh, Cavan, Tyrone and Derry. First Prize: Solo exhibition within the next two years plus private studio with access to technical facilities for one month preceding the show.

The exhibition takes place in the LSC Gallery. Launch at 12pm Friday 4th December, running until Thurs 14th January

Growing Artists VI Schools Exhibitions and Workshops

Continuing its support for the development of young artists in the county, Growing Artists VI showcases the rich and diverse works of young people and is a testament to their creativity, talent and potential. This years show is made in collaboration with tutors and students from St Clare’s Comprehensive, Manorhamilton and the exhibition includes over 100 works and collaborative pieces. In addition the gallery will this year host a series of printmaking workshops for pupils from local schools.

From Vessel to Object Peter Fulop

Artist in Residence 22th February - 28th March, 2016

Fulop’s work in clay is heavily influenced by the Japanese tradition. His experimentation with Raku reduction and wood firing techniques along with his use of calligraphic gesture is a culmination of experiences and time spent with traditional artists in China, Korea and Japan. In his most recent works collectively entitled ‘from vessel to object’ Fulop pushes the boundaries of the traditional clay vessel seeking to exploit elemental processes of fired material intertwined with the artists gestural use of brushwork and glazing technique. These reflective works attempt to ‘connect to and reawaken’ an embodied awareness of ‘objects and object making’. (Fulop 2015)

Peter Fulop is a Leitrim based artist who studied at the School of Ceramics 1985’-89, in Hungary moving to Ireland in 2001. His work has been shown in exhibitions in Ireland, the USA, Korea, China and Japan and is found in the public collection of Archie Bray Foundation Helena, Montana, USA, (2013); Zen Buddhist Monastery Mungyeong, Korea (2012); Mungyeong Ceramic Museum Mungyeong, Korea, (2012); Fule International Ceramic Art Museum, China, (2011); Ganjin Celadon Museum Ganjin, Korea, (2011); Ulster Museum Belfast, N.Ireland, (2011); The National Museum of Ireland Dublin, Ireland, (2008); The Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Shigaraki, Japan, (2008).

Fulop has been supported by Culture Ireland Award, Arts Council of Ireland Travel and Training Awards, Craft Council of Ireland Continued Professional Development Award and Roscommon Artist.

Exhibition opens Friday 8 April 5-8pm and runs until the 28 April.

Ballinamore Drama Festival 2016

The 2016 Drama Festival in Ballinamore this year from March 6th -13th is our 35th year hosting drama festivals. The festival committee have put together a wide variety of plays, with four groups in the Open Section from Carrigallen, Longford, Castleblaney and Dublin and four in the Confined Section from Killeshandra, Tubbercurry, Shercock and Wexford. The drama festival is a wonderful social and cultural event and all attending the plays nightly are offered complimentary refreshments after the short adjudication, which adds to the jovial atmosphere enjoyed by visitors and patrons.

South Leitrim Arts present

The Last BlastSouth Leitrim Arts present The Last Blast - a night of Rock and Blues with four legends of the Irish rock scene since the sixties. Johnny Fean, (lead guitarist with Horslips) and Ed Deane (ex Van Morrison and many others) accompanied by John Quearney on Bass and Noel Bridgeman on Drums. After fifteen years of presenting arts events in south Leitrim the group have decided to call it a day. Formed as the Carrick Area Arts group in 2000 by the then Arts officer Terri Duffy. the group them joined up with the Mohill Arts Group to form South Leitrim Arts in 2004. The group presented traditional music, salsa, comedy, jazz, classical, slam poetry, visual art, singer/songwriters, and so on in Drumshanbo, Leitrim village, Drumsna, Carrick on Shannon, Drumkeerin, Jamestown, Liscarbin, Mohill etc. The first show was Wexford singer/ songwriter Pierce Turner in Duignans Bar in Drumsna and so for the final one we are going back to Duignans for the Last Blast with Johnny Fean, Ed Deane, Noel Bridgeman, and John Quearney.
