ManyarefamiliarwiththestoryofthePiedPiperofHamelin.Fewrealisehowever,thatthestoryisbasedonrealevents,whichevolvedovertheyearsintoafairytalemadetoscarechildren.

Forthoseunfamiliarwiththetale,itissetin1284inthetownofHamelin,LowerSaxony,Germany.Thistownwasfacingaratinfestation,andapiper,dressedinacoatofmanycoloured,brightcloth,appeared.Thispiperpromisedtogetridoftheratsinreturnforapayment,towhichthetownspeopleagreedtoo.Althoughthepipergotridoftheratsbyleadingthemawaywithhismusic,thepeopleofHamelinrenegedontheirpromise.Thefuriouspiperleft,vowingrevenge.Onthe26thofJulyofthatsameyear,thepiperreturnedandledthechildrenaway,nevertobeseenagain,justashedidtherats.Nevertheless,oneorthreechildrenwereleftbehind,dependingonwhichversionisbeingtold.Oneofthesechildrenwaslame,andcouldnotkeepup,anotherwasdeafandcouldnothearthemusic,whilethethirdonewasblindandcouldnotseewherehewasgoing.

TheearliestknownrecordofthisstoryisfromthetownofHamelinitselfdepictedinastainedglasswindowcreatedforthechurchofHamelin,whichdatestoaround1300AD.Althoughitwasdestroyedin1660,severalwrittenaccountshavesurvived.TheoldestcomesfromtheLueneburgmanuscript(c144050),whichstated:Intheyearof1284,onthedayofSaintsJohnandPaulonJune26,byapiper,clothedinmanykindsofcolours,130childrenborninHamelinwereseduced,andlostattheplaceofexecutionnearthekoppen.

ThesupposedstreetwherethechildrenwerelastseenistodaycalledBungelosenstrasse(streetwithoutdrums),asnooneisallowedtoplaymusicordancethere.Incidentally,itissaidthattheratswereabsentfromearlieraccounts,andonlyaddedtothestoryaroundthemiddleofthe16thcentury.Moreover,thestainedglasswindowandotherprimarywrittensourcesdonotspeakoftheplagueofrats.

Ifthechildrensdisappearancewasnotanactofrevenge,thenwhatwasitscause?TherehavebeennumeroustheoriestryingtoexplainwhathappenedtothechildrenofHamelin.Forinstance,onetheorysuggeststhatthechildrendiedofsomenaturalcauses,andthatthePiedPiperwasthepersonificationofDeath.ByassociatingtheratswiththeBlackDeath,ithasbeensuggestedthatthechildrenwerevictimsofthisplague.Yet,theBlackDeathwasmostsevereinEuropebetween1348and1350,morethanhalfacenturyaftertheeventinHamelin.Anothertheorysuggeststhatthechildrenwereactuallysentawaybytheirparents,duetotheextremepovertythattheywerelivingin.YetanothertheoryspeculatesthatthechildrenwereparticipantsofadoomedChildrensCrusade,andmighthaveendedupinmoderndayRomania,orthatthedepartureofHamelin'schildrenistiedtotheOstsiedlung,inwhichanumberofGermanslefttheirhomestocolonizeEasternEurope.OneofthedarkertheoriesevenproposesthatthePiedPiperwasactuallyapaedophilewhocreptintothetownofHamelintoabductchildrenduringtheirsleep.

Thisfairytaleisoddtome.Suchstorieswereoriginallytoldtochildrentoscarethemawayfromunwantedbehaviourorasamorallesson.TheGermanshadbrutalstoriesfortheiryoungones.Therewasayoungchildwhowasahabitualthumbsucker.ThemotherwarnedherofacreepyTaylorwithlageclothshearswholurksintheshadows,waitingtopounceuponunsuspectingthumbsuckersandswiftlydeprivingthemoftheirmoistlittleappendages.Themothergoesoutshoppingand,thechild,nowunsupervised,promptlysticksherthumbintohermouth.Suddenly,thelongcoatedcreephopsoutfrombehindthecurtainsandwithsissorsthesizeofhedgecutterstakesoffbothofthechild'sthumbs.

However,thepiedpipertaleisuniquebecausethechildrensufferduetothefaultoftheparentsratherthantheirownmisbehaviour.Perhapsthisstorywasmeantforthegrownups.
