It is imperative that the
Christian, at the beginning of
his pursuit to understand what
true worship is, gets it clear
that the object of our worship
is to be God and God alone.

What is worship?
God is not only the object of worship, but He
is also the subject of our worship.
Worship is a heartfelt expression of the depths of a broken heart reaching out to the mysterious
depths of God’s heart through embracing the glorious truth of God’s love.
Authentic worship is an
expression of the knowledge of
God’s love.

Can you teach someone how to worship?
• A child is not taught the four basic emotions of happiness, sadness, fear/surprise, and anger/disgust
• If worship is only an emotional response, then you cannot teach someone how to worship.
• Worship is more than emotions, it includes wisdom, understanding and knowledge of God
• God is both the object and the subject of worship
• Thus, worship is theological
The foundation of worship in the heart is not
emotional...it is theological.- Sinclair B. Ferguson
Indeed, I count everything as loss
because of the surpassing worth of
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his
sake I have suffered the loss of all
things and count them as rubbish, in
order that I may gain Christ.
Philippians 3:8

Is intimacy something that can be taught?
• An intimate relationship is an interpersonal relationship that involves physical or emotional intimacy.
• Emotional intimacy cannot be taught, it is a direct response to a revealed attitude of the heart.
• Spontaneous worship is often a result of emotional intimacy.
• The Bible warns against settling for emotional intimacy (Parable of the Sower).
• Physical intimacy is best only when taught.
• The Book of Leviticus is a witness at the importance of teaching worship.
• Prayer
• Bible study
• Communion etc.
It is not time or opportunity that is to determine intimacy;—
it is disposition alone. – Jane Austen
Study to show yourself
approved to God, a workman
that needs not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of
truth.

J.I. Parker on Intimacy
There is, however, equally great incentive
to worship and love God in the thought
that, for some unfathomable reason, He
wants me as His friend, and desires to be
my friend, and has given His Son to die for
me in order to realize this purpose. not
merely that we know God, but that He
knows us.

Is worship only through actions and not words?
• Authentic worship encompasses the mind, the body and the spirit.
• Romans 12:1 invites us to offer our bodies as a reasonable sacrifice
• Romans 12:2 invites us to worship with a renewed mind
• John 4:24 invites us to worship God in the spirit
• True worship stems from the abundance of the heart, the words spoken are crafted from am honest desire for
God and the ensuing actions are a testimony of His Glory.
• Authentic worship requires words, but also demands actions
Worship is not only in word, but also in
actions.
And they have conquered him
by the blood of the Lamb and
by the word of their testimony,
for they loved not their lives
even unto death.
Revelation 12:11

R.C. Sproul on Expressing Worship
The very heart of worship, as the Bible
makes clear, is the business of expressing,
from the depths of our spirits, the highest
possible honor we can offer before God.

Is there a relationship between experiencing God’s presence and personal righteousness?
• God’s manifest presence is dependent wholly on his will
• God’s love is greater than our sins
• Does God’s presence flee when a worship leader has sinned or lives in sin?
• If the object and subject of our worship is God, then sin will not limit God’s glory, but will be reigned over.
• The obsession of a worshipper should be on God.
• However, if the worshiper fail to draw nearer to God, then no worship will ensue.
How do you change your behavior? Change
what you worship. – Timothy Keller
Now the law came in to
increase the trespass, but
where sin increased, grace
abounded all the more,

Timothy Keller on Worship and Sin
The secret to freedom from enslaving
patterns of sin is worship. You need
worship. You need great worship. You need
weeping worship. You need glorious
worship. You need to sense God’s
greatness and to be moved it — moved to
tears and moved to laughter — moved by
who God is and what he has done for you.
