A few thoughts for early Advent

Behold I am coming soon. Revelation 22:7

Ecce Rex veniet Dominus terrae,Et ipse auferet jugum captivitatis nostrae.

See! The ruler of the earth shall come,The Lord who will take from us the heavy burden of ourexile. Monastic liturgy

A character in one of J.D. Salinger's short stories saysthat the most important word in the Bible is "watch".That person would love advent and especially thegospel. "Be on watch! Stay awake! Take the question to Isaiah.Take it to a saint you have known and one you wish youhad known. What would help us stay awake and watch?

The voice of one crying in the wilderness is the voice ofone breaking the silence. Prepare the way for the Lord,he says, as though he were saying: "I speak out in orderto lead him into your hearts, but he does not choose tocome where I lead him unless you prepare the way forhim".

Carol Story: "The First Nowell" (Hymn 109)Although no Christmas season would be completewithout the melodious singing of this tuneful carol, verylittle is known about its origin. It is believed to have hadits rise in France during the fifteenth century. Noel is aFrench word originating from Latin meaning "birthday." The song is thought to have been brought across thechannel to England before 1823 by the wandering

troubadours. The carol under the English form,"Nowell," became a great favorite for Christmas Eve,especially in the west of England. This was when theentire village gathered for singing and celebrating thebringing in of the Yule log. At this time carols werethought of as popular religious songs meant to be sungoutside the church rather than within."The First Noel" portrays in vivid narrative style thestory of the birth of Christ. All six stanzas are needed tocomplete the entire event when the hymn is sung. Thesixth stanza urges us to join together to sing praises toGod for the marvels of His creation and for thesalvation provided through Christ's shed blood. Therepetition of the joyous "noel" in the refrain isequivalent to our singing out "happy birthday" tosomeone. It is interesting to observe that the "King of Israel" wasfirst announced to "certain poor shepherds" only, but inthe final stanza the phrases "let us all" and "mankindhath brought" remind us that Christ came to redeem thewhole world.1. The first noel the angel did say was to certain poorshepherds in fields as they lay-in fields where they laykeeping their sheep, on a cold winter's night that was sodeep.2. They looked up and saw a star shining in the east, beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light, andso it continued both day and night.3. And by the light of that same star, three wise mencame from country far; to seek for a king was theirintent, and to follow the star wherever it went.4. This star drew nigh to the northwest, o'er Bethlehemit took its rest; and there it did both stop and stay, rightover the place where Jesus lay.5. Then entered in those wise men three, full rev'rentlyupon their knee, and offered there, in His presence, theirgold and myrrh and frankincense.6. Then let us all with one accord sing praises to ourheav'nly Lord, that hath made heav'n and earth ofnaught, and with His blood mankind hath bought.Chorus: Noel, noel! Noel, noel! Born is the King ofIsrael!(from Amazing Grace: 366 Inspiring Hymn Stories for DailyDevotion)
