The Official Magazine of the 2014 “I Love a Sunburnt C ountry” Jindalee State School Fete

As a committee, the Jindalee State

School P & C is focussed on promoting

parent participation and encouraging

collaboration between parents, students,

the teachers and administration staff

within the school. It is about fostering

a commitment to achieving the best

educational outcomes for the children.

The teaching and administration staff,

led by the principal can only achieve so

much on their own and the P & C acts

as an extension to their great work. They

ensure projects such as the purchase of air

conditioning, new classroom furniture

and lights on the multi-purpose courts

just to name a few. They also manage the

tuckshop, uniform shop, School Aged Care

Program and they drive fund raising

through events such as the annual fete.

The Jindalee State School fete has become one of the most anticipated annual school events across the Centenary and Western Suburbs. It is a much loved

day for our students and the big kids have a blast too.

Each year we just keep on making it bigger and better. We strive to improve what is already great to make it a better experience for all involved. Our aim is to always wow you with something exciting and new. We hope our enthusiasm and excitement rubs off on you.

2 Free Dress Days = $1300+Have you got your important dates calendar on the fridge?

A couple of months ago this calendar was distributed electronically to all JSS families. We are sure you all printed it out and gave it prime position on your fridge but just in case you didn’t, here it is again.

There have been two Free Dress days already and we raised: $643.40 Super Heroes, 8 May.$693.30 Pyjamas, 12 June.

The students get really excited about fete Free Dress days. Not only do they get out of wearing their uniform but they get to dress up in really cool clothes and costumes.

Many think that the P&C sets the themes for these days but it is our Student Council who chooses what the kids will wear. On the Free Dress days we ask for a gold coin donation from the students to kick start our fete planning. Last year’s donations paid for the roving entertainers and part of the fete flyer printing – both very important elements for a successful fete.

Some of our very popular stalls are enormous tasks to manage for convenors.This year we are trying out a new method for a couple of our favourites.

Nuggets, Calamari & Chips plus Cakes & Sweets are splitting up their tasks and job sharing convenor roles in a new plan to share the load. For both Nuggets and Cakes stalls there is all the preliminary organisation,

which will be done by the Preparation Convenors. On The Day Convenors will be responsible for stepping in and running the stall on fete day.

C lose your eyes, and picture if you will, the 2014 Jindalee State School Fete. The sun is shining; the kids are running around laughing; there are hundreds of people milling about enjoying the activities, the food and the atmosphere.

There are stalls with customers looking for bargains, food or information. Now look a little closer and picture yourself behind one of those stall counters.

Yes it is true you can be a part of this spectacular day. So what do you need to do to be a good convener?

A few simple questions that you can ask and answer. Can I talk to people? Do I know how to handle money? Will my kids benefit from the fete and my participation?

WHO’S WHO?A PROFILE OF OUR FANTASTIC CONVENORSHow well do you know our convenors? These folk not only volunteered countless hours but they also brought a whole host of experience with them. If you didn’t know their faces before now, here they are. Next time you see them around the school - say hi and thanks.

CONVENOR PROFILEKara-Leigh James

Position: Fete Convenor

Children: Aston: 7 & Bailey: 9

Job: Customer Service Support Officer at answers IT (yes our Captain’s Coffee Cabin Bronze Sponsor!)

How long have you been involved in the fete?: Since 2009. 3 years convening the coffee shop and 2 years as Fete Convenor.

Why did you decide to be the Fete Convenor?: I decided to take on the Fete Convenor role as I love getting to know the local business owners, it is so awesome to see them supporting the fete.

This role also enables me to have a major part in what happens on the day and it is so amazing to see how much the kids (and adults) enjoy it once it all comes together.

I get to meet the stall convenors, who are all fantastic people, they give up their time both beforehand and on the day to make our fete bigger and better than the previous year. If you are friends with any of these people consider yourself very lucky!

What other or previous experience have you had that helped contribute to this role?: It was instilled in me at a very young age that helping out in the community was very important.

My Nana was in every charity organisation imaginable, my parents were in the Car Club and Lions Club and quite often I was volunteering with my dad delivering yellow pages, selling raffle tickets and working in the hillclimb canteen.

I loved door knocking for the Red Shield Appeal and Red Cross and was so excited when I had worked out how much money I had raised for them.

In 2010, I was lucky enough to work for the Fundraising Directory and Fetes and Festivals where I stayed for almost two years. In this time I learnt so much about fundraising and what works and what doesn’t.

As one of the JSS P&C Vice Presidents it gives me great satisfaction to see where the money raised is being spent!.

CONVENOR PROFILEStef Bowker

Position: Graphic Design and Marketing / Coral Cave of Craft Convenor

Children: Lachie: 3 & Thomas: 6

Job: Proprietress at Who Dunnit? Graphic Design (Sponsor)

How long have you been involved with the fete?: This is my first year. I came on board May 2013.

Why did you convene a stall?: I’m new to JSS. My reasons for joining the team are threefold. I wanted to meet some other parents; I love to be involved with my children’s education and I am also addicted to becoming involved in large projects. It is extremely rewarding and loads of fun.

Craft stall helpers prior to the fete, at the fete and craft contributors: OMG! I hope I acknowledge everyone. There is so many of you that have helped out in some capacity or other, including people that didn’t have anything to do with the school. Some of you I don’t even know your names. Anyway, here goes - roll credits:

What other or previous experience have you had that helped contribute to this role?: I have years of experience in the fine arts and graphic design. My love for arts and crafts has been life long.

To cut a vey long story short - I have worked on many events such as conferences, trade shows, vocational training and tertiary education. Last year I was in Melbourne. My oldest boy started prep and I was involved in the school fair’s craft stall. I also managed all the graphic design for the fair.

Position: Fete Treasurer

How long have you been involved with the fete?: I have volunteered on various stalls - BBQ, Chocolate Wheel and Cent Auction. I have been Fete Treasurer in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: I joined the P&C in 2011 to get more involved in my kids school and my local community.

I felt I was so absorbed in my own busy life that I was missing out on something important. So I turned up to a meeting and came home Treasurer and later Fete Treasurer too.

I accepted the challenge and threw myself into it, made friends, learned skills, and generally did what needed doing.

What I’ve learnt is that you have to work to build community and to make yourself part of it. It doesn’t come and find you.

The fete is an awesome event in the life of our school every year and it’s an absolute buzz to be part of making it happen.

What other or previous experience have you had that helped contribute to this role?: My day job is the project management of new buildings, managing a team and handling budgets, so that experience transfers well, but my involvement in the fete has introduced me to new skills I never knew I had or needed.

Position: Sausage Sizzle Convenor

Children: Ashlea: 6 & Ruby: 8

Job: Domestic Goddess (Nigella Lawson in my daydreams but reality is far from that).

How long have you been involved with the fete?: I have been part of the JSS community for 3 years. First year was on the Curry Stall, second year was on the Coffee Shop and this year I was the Convenor of the Sausage Sizzle.

A big thanks goes out to our fantastic parent helpers: My Husband Colin for his all day commitment. Peter Goodhew; Shane Reid; Steven Swann (a friend; not even a school parent), Louise Wilson; Vanessa Bailey; Lisa Pritchard and her Mum Marion and Brent Prichard (He spend more than 18 hours helping out over 3 days). And to Karen Stock who looked after my kids all day: 8 hours at the fete with 4 kids in tow so we could sizzle the sausages.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: My daughter asked me! Her little face just lights up when I am involved at the school. Whether it is joining in on an excursion, helping in class or at the JSS fete. She looks at me with such pride. I can’t say no!

I want her to grow up to be a proactive, contributing member of our community. I see no better way to exemplify this than by getting involved. It’s only once a year.

What other or previous experience have you had that helped contribute to this role?: None, it’s not hard to cook a sausage. It was fun! So next year if you have just an hour spare. Please volunteer it to one of the stalls, every bit helps to make our school better.

Position: Bookstall Convenor

Children: Seth: 5, Nathaniel: 9 & Bryce: 11

Job: Scientist at UQ Vet School, Gatton

How long have you been involved with the fete?: This was my third year convening the bookstall but I volunteered on other stalls before that.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: I like being involved in my kid’s school. It’s a great way to meet people who I wouldn’t normally get to talk to and to get an understanding of the way things work at the school. The other convenors and volunteers are a lovely group of people and we have fun! My kids love me being a part of things and enjoy their involvement with the stall too. The book stall is a good fit for me because I love books!

Position: Grocery Raffle and Money Tree Raffle Convenor

Children: Jessica: 7 & Rebecca: 9

Job: Physiotherapist

How long have you been involved with the fete?: 2 years as Grocery Raffle and Money Tree Raffle convenor.

My fantastic helpers on the day were: Melynda Knight, Amy Cox-Youngson, Suzie Keller, Rae Welch, Tilly Devendra, Angela Grech, Bec Twine and of course Andrew Nuygen who sponsored the stall and helped out with the prize draws. To Kaye Jacobs and Kara James for their help with the grocery basket. Also to my hubby and kids - Shawn, Rebecca and Jessica who helped with lots of jobs before and on fete day. Thanks to you all.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: Jindalee State School is great and I’m very glad my kids get to go to school here. I wanted to help out with the P&C’s major fundraising event of the year to enable them to continue their many projects which make our good school even better.

The kids love being involved and fete day is a wonderful chance to get to know other families in my children’s classes.

How long have you been involved with the fete?: 7 years in total. 3 as a convenor.

My helpers on the day were: Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who joined me during the craziness of glow stick peak hour: Tanya Ingham, Kath Power, Toni Both, Lucas Wong, Sharon Mapley, Tiana Templeman, Trevor Loveday, Brenda Melville and Nic Melville.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: Working full time makes it difficult to have face to face contact with the school so being involved in the fete provides me with that opportunity. It gives me the chance to meet people in the JSS community, my children learn about volunteering and giving back to their school. It’s also just a lot of fun!

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: As a Mummy who works full time in a demanding job I find it hard, and I feel guilty that I don’t get to do as much time in class helping the children, so contributing to the fete even in a small form gave me the satisfaction I was giving to the school and Aaliyah.

The smile on Aaliyah’s face each year that she thinks her Mummy is the boss of the pizza stall is truly an emotion you can’t buy, she is so proud.

Position: Coffee Shop Convenor

Job: Before kids I was a hairdresser and I helped run a coffee shop with my husband. Now I love creating cakes and ginger bread houses; hairdressing from home and looking after our boys.

How long have you been involved in the fete?: A couple of times my husband and I helped out on friends’ stalls. In 2012 I was a helper/coffee barista for the fete day. In 2013 a stall convenor.

My helpers on the day were: To all our volunteers a huge THANK YOU. We definaly couldn’t run this stall without you. To answers IT, thank you for your generous sponsorship.

A big thank you to Sandy Weldon. She is amazing to work with and is the back bone of the coffee shop. She has great ideas and nothing is too much trouble. And to Erin Godfrey. She was definitely my right-hand woman on the day, particularly the way she helped our awesome volunteers settle in to their roles.

PWF class parents, thanks for giving up your time on the day. Wow! Even just an hour of your time may seem such a small gesture, but in reality it is a grand one.

To our coffee baristas; thank you, thank you, thank you. Last year the only thing I saw of the fete was my son’s 10 minute performance. Your time, along with your experience enabled us all to get out and about on fete day just that little bit more. It was greatly appreciated (especially by me).

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: I was asked by last year’s convenor Clodie and convinced by Kara (really, it didn’t take much convincing). I like that I can give back to the school, the teachers and staff. Our fete is a reflection of how great our school community is.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: My daughter Caitlin is involved in dance competitions and I wanted to see what was involved in organising an event that involved lots of different acts, people and members of the community. I now have

a greater appreciation of the amount of work involved in making an event run smoothly on the day, can I say though, it was great fun.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: I have very fond memories of my mum working on various school fete stalls when I was growing up.

So when my eldest started prep this year I thought it would be nice for him to see me getting involved with his school.

I also thought it was a great opportunity to help generate additional funds for the benefit of the school and students.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: I strongly believe in supporting our community and helping out where ever we can. Helping and being part of the community is a moral I want to install in my children and I feel leading by example is the best way to do that.

It is also an activity that we can do as a family as they help out with the preparations and on the fete day. I also got to work with another amazing mummy who was my co-convenor.

Job: Logistics Process Officer

How long have you been involved in the fete?: This was my very first time!

Huge thanks to my volunteers: Maggie and Jacob McIntosh (they helped most of the day!), Sarah Kanhalikham, Nicky McCall, Bruce Porter, Steph Mooney, Tracey Farina, Cate Hottot, Tracy Tinker, Toni Both and Janet Singer.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: I answered the call out for a convenor of the Cent Aution. It was only three weeks before the fete and there was still no convenor for the stall. It was a bit scary having no experience, very little time, juggling work and having a toddler but it turned out to be a very fun and rewarding experience.

I was also lucky to have wonderful parents to help out the entire time. Cate Hottot (last year’s Cent Auction convenor) shared her wealth of knowledge and great tips. She helped me through the entire process.It was great to have been able to contribute, even if it was in a small way, to the success of this year’s fete!

How long have you been involved with the fete?: My partner, Nathan, and I have been involved in the fete now for 4 years. We helped out with the Trash’n’Treasure stall for 2 years, then convened it last year. This year we’ve moved on to something we are more comfortable with!

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: The fete is always an incredible day, but it wouldn’t happen without people to run it! We simply stepped up where we saw help was needed, and then took on more responsibility over time.

I’ve met so many lovely people along the way and get to know my class parents really well through working along side them on the day. I am so grateful to the people who helped me on the day, they were so gracious with their time and efforts.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: I started doing this primarily to represent the P&C (as an employee). I actually do enjoy it though and have more so in the last 5 years since my daughter started at the school. Over the years, I have been involved in running the Haunted House, Ice Cream Van, the Bar, Side Show Alley and now new to the Chocolate Wheel

How long have you been involved in the fete?: This was my first year.

Why did you decide to be a convenor?: To help out and support my child’s school and be a part of the community. And you also get to know other parents better and build better relationships.

What other or previous experience have you had that helped contribute to this role?: I have been involved in a number of other community events.

My helpers before and on the day: I would like to thank each and everyone who supported me in successfully managing my stall and making it a success on the day. It was amazing to see parents and friends come forward and support the school and the community as a whole.

First and foremost I would like to thank my husband, Neeraj Chand who supported me all the way. He and his friends cooked all the food. So thanks to his friends, Ali, Farooq, Shameem.

Walk Around Australia Chal lenge

Jindalee State School kids are aiming to Actively Travel some 15,000 km, which will be the equivalent of walking around Australia.

How to Actively Travel and contribute to class kilometre tally:• Walk, cycle, scoot, bus or

car-pool to school. • Families who live further afield

can Park and Stride from outside the 500m radius of the school.

• Older children can catch the 776 bus if they live in Sinnamon Park or Seventeen Mile Rocks.

500m towards our goal will be recorded for every child who actively travels to or from school on:• Walking, Wheeling,

Wednesdays. • Walk with a mate

Thursdays.

Progress will be announced at assemblies with the top weekly classes receiving the ‘Green’ or ‘Gold’ Boot Trophies.

There will be a pizza party for the school’s top Active Travellers each term. Students who Actively Travel eight or more times a term will get to decorate a ‘thong’ to add to the large map of Australia tracking our progress.

Jindalee State School is aiming to Actively Travel around Australia this year.
