THOUGHTS ALONG THE WAY from Bishop Cary This June’s meeting of the American bishops in San Diego

was devoted to the New Evangelization, and there was no avoiding the question: what has happened to the flock of Christ? Why have so many of His sheep wandered away? Why are the scattered scattered?

The scattered are not gathered with the flock, it’s true; but, in spite of the terrible sex abuse scandal, they’re not gone altogether. Many identify themselves as Catholics who don’t go to church. They haven’t stopped believing in Christ, but they can’t seem to find Him in their Catholic experience. They feel, as we all do, the inhibiting pressure of a culture in flight from worship, a culture that will not kneel down. Be spiritual if you wish, it counsels, but don’t be religious. You can believe, but you don’t have to belong. Follow the Good Shepherd—as long as you’re the only sheep in His flock.

Looking at the flock of Christ today, we can draw a helpful distinction between (1) the catechized but unevangelized--those who’ve been taught about Jesus but have not met Him personally—and (2) the evangelized but uncatechized--those who have had a personally transforming encounter with Christ but have not been taught how to go on meeting Him in His Church. The New Evangelization comes back again and again to the indispensable centrality of a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. What can we do to help make this happen more widely and lastingly?

Maybe, as a number of speakers suggested, we should “lead with the beautiful” because “beauty captures the imagination.” In the novel/television series Brideshead Revisited the unbelieving narrator first marvels at the beauty of the English manor from which the book takes its name; he is then drawn by the goodness of one who lives there, Lady Marchmain: he wants to be good as she is good. In the end he finds himself unable to resist the truth of the faith that underlies both her goodness and the beauty of the manor she inhabits; so he becomes Catholic himself. The beautiful leads to the good, and the good leads to the true.

Reversing this sequence by presenting the truths of the faith first might have stopped the movement to conversion in its tracks. A seven-year-old boy at his first game in Yankee Stadium may find baseball to be a beautiful game. Wanting to be good at it himself, he may take up t-ball. Many games later he will discover that the infield-fly rule makes sense. Try to persuade him of this truth right off the bat, however, before he knows how good it feels to hit his first solid single to center, and his baseball career will end before it begins.

The logical order (truth, goodness, beauty) may not easily lead to conversion. It begins and ends differently than the evangelical order (beauty, goodness, truth). “Come and see,” Jesus says to His first disciples. When they saw His glory in the miracle of His goodness at the wedding in Cana, St. John tells us, they “believed in Him.” The beauty of Jesus’ love for us leads us to do good as He did and discover that what He says is true. (Ask yourself if this is not how it works with you.)

This way of thinking only confirms Pope Paul VI’s insight 40 years ago: people today are persuaded not so much by words as by witness. A beautiful life, new life in Christ, radiates goodness; it testifies to the truth that sets us free. If we live such a life, each of us can play a unique and irreplaceable part in the drama of the New Evangelization.

PENSAMIENTOS DEL CAMINO por el Obispo Cary La reunión de los obispos estadounidenses de junio en San Diego se dedicó a la Nueva Evangelización, y no había manera de evitar la pregunta: ¿qué ha pasado con el rebaño de Cristo? ¿Por qué tantos de sus ovejas se extraviaron? ¿Por qué se dispersaron las dispersadas? Las dispersadas no se han reunido con el rebaño, es cierto; pero, a pesar del terrible escándalo de abuso sexual, las dispersadas no se han alejado por completo. Muchos se identifican como católicos que no van a la iglesia. No han dejado de creer en Cristo, pero parece que no pueden encontrarlo en su experiencia católica. Sienten, como todos nosotros, la presión de la inhibición de una cultura que rehúye el culto, una cultura que no se arrodilla. Se espiritual, si lo deseas, se aconseja, pero no seas de ninguna religión. Tú puedes creer, pero no tienes que pertenecer. Sigue al Buen Pastor, siempre y cuando tú seas la única ovejas en su rebaño. En cuanto a la grey de Cristo hoy en día, podemos establecer una distinción útil entre (1) los catequizados, pero no evangelizados - los que se les ha enseñado acerca de Jesús, pero no lo han conocido personalmente, y (2) los evangelizados, pero no catequizados - los que han tenido un encuentro transformador personal con Cristo, pero no se les ha enseñado cómo encontrarse con Él en su Iglesia. La Nueva Evangelización menciona una y otra vez la importancia indispensable de un encuentro personal con Jesucristo. ¿Qué podemos hacer para ayudar a que esto suceda más amplia y duraderamente? Tal vez, como un gran número de oradores sugirieron, debemos “guiar con lo bello”, porque “la belleza captura la imaginación.” En la novela de televisión Brideshead Revisited el incrédulo narrador primero se maravilla de la belleza de la mansión Inglés de la que el libro toma su nombre, y después es atraído por la bondad de alguien que vive allí, Lady Marchmain: él quiere ser bueno como ella lo es. Al final, él es incapaz de resistir la verdad de la fe que proviene tanto de la bondad de ella y de la belleza de la casa que ella habita, y es por eso que se hace católico. La belleza conduce a lo bueno, y lo bueno lleva a la verdad. Revirtiendo esta secuencia mediante la presentación de las verdades de la fe en primer lugar podría haber detenido el movimiento hacia la conversión. Un niño de siete años de edad en su primer partido en el Yankee Stadium encuentra el béisbol como un deporte bonito. Queriendo ser buen beisbolista él mismo, puede comenzar practicando t-ball. Después de muchos juegos descubrirá que las reglas dentro del campo tienen sentido. Tratar de persuadirlo de su verdad de buenas a primeras, aun, antes de que él sepa lo bien que se siente golpear su primer sencillo al jardín central, su carrera en el béisbol puede terminar antes de que comience. El orden lógico (verdad, bondad, belleza) no puede conducir fácilmente a la conversión. Comienza y termina de manera diferente que el orden evangélico (belleza, bondad, verdad). “Venid y ved”, dice Jesús a sus primeros discípulos. Cuando vieron su gloria en el milagro de bondad en las bodas de Caná, San Juan nos dice que “creyeron en él.” La belleza del amor de Jesús por nosotros que nos lleva a hacer el bien como Él lo hizo, y descubrimos que lo que Él dice es verdad. (Pregúntese a sí mismo si esta no es la forma en que trabaja en usted.) Esta forma de pensar no hace sino confirmar una visión del Papa Pablo VI hace 40 años: la gente, hoy en día no están convencidos por palabras sino por el ejemplo. Una vida hermosa, una vida nueva en Cristo, irradia bondad, y da testimonio de la verdad que nos hace libres. Si vivimos una vida así, cada uno de nosotros puede desempeñar un papel único e insustituible en el drama de la Nueva Evangelización.

NOTICIAS HISPANAS Enseñanza religiosa: catequesis, círculos de estudio,

retiros bíblicos, asambleas familiares, grupos de rosario... Visita a enfermos, ancianos, discapacitados, encarcelados, infectados por el SIDA, drogadictos, etc. Difusión de periódicos y libros católicos. Librería ambulante. Campañas de alfabetización y clases de cultura. Formación de equipos litúrgicos. Visita a niños en albergues y en hospitales. Contactos callejeros en las calles y parques. Charlas de Planificación Familiar Natural: Método de la Ovulación Billings. Contacto con personas que van a cometer un aborto. Los semilleros y juveniles hacen un apostolado de formación. Siempre debe darse preferencia al apostolado entre jóvenes, por aquello del Vaticano II: “Los jóvenes deben convertirse en los primeros e inmediatos apóstoles con los jóvenes”. (AA, Nº 12) NO ES LABOR de la Legión de María dar socorro material (dinero, ropas, etc). Se trata de llevar algo más importante. Recuérdese que también los Apóstoles prefirieron dedicarse a anunciar el Mensaje de Cristo y eligieron otros que cuidaran a los necesitados (Hech. 6, 2). Por eso, también la Legión de María tiene prohibido recaudar fondos fuera de ella a favor de nada ni de nadie. Su única fuente de ingresos es la colecta voluntaria y secreta que se hace en cada junta. LO QUE PERSIGUE la Legión de María es entablar un contacto de verdadera amistad con cada persona individual. Intenta llenar de amor lo que está vacío de él, convencida de que sólo así podrá cambiarse el mundo.

DE LOS SOCIOS... Socios Activos: pueden ingresar todo católico que practique fielmente su religión, desee ser útil a la Iglesia y sociedad; y que esté dispuesto a cumplir las normas funcionales de la asociación. Asumen asistir puntual y semanalmente a la junta de su grupo; rezar diariamente la Catena; realizar un trabajo apostólico cada semana, con duración mínima de dos horas, acompañado de otro legionario; y a mantener en secreto los asuntos discutidos en la Junta o conocidos en el ejercicio del trabajo legionario. Los Socios Auxiliares en cambio prestan un servicio de oración y pueden ingresar sacerdotes, religiosos y seglares que no pueden o no quieren asumir los deberes del socio activo. El servicio de los auxiliares consiste en rezar diariamente las oraciones contenidas en la Téssera (hojita de oraciones), a saber: la invocación y la oración al Espíritu Santo; cinco decenas del Rosario y las oraciones que siguen después; la Catena y, por último, las oraciones finales. Los que recen el Rosario diariamente por cualquier intención que sea, pueden hacerse Socios Auxiliares sin obligación de añadir otro Rosario.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS: In keeping with a more-than-half-century tradition, Oregon Knights of Columbus will participate again this year in the Silver Rose Run, beginning in Ontario, Canada, and ending in Monterrey, Mexico. The event began in 1960, when some brother knights in Monterrey wanted to give back to our Lady of Guadalupe for the many blessings she has bestowed on the Church. They used a real rose at the beginning, blessed by Bishop John C. Cody in London, Ontario, which was then sent to Laredo, Texas, and on to Monterrey. Since the live rose had deteriorated by the following year, Bishop Cody had a bronze rose made for the next run in 1961. The squires (young Knights) in Monterrey then commissioned a silver rose - one of the precious metals for which Mexico is famous - to be fashioned by Miguel Martinez Montoya, a Knight and jeweler. The silver version was modeled on a flower grown by a local gardener, famous for her perfect roses. The rose used for the design has been dubbed, “the Rose of Peace.” Over the years other bronze and silver roses were created for locations from Dallas, Texas, to New York City, in honor of Mary’s bestowing the miracle of roses on St. Juan Diego in the 16th century. In recent years the rose has been run from London, Ontario, Canada, through 10 states and then on to Monterrey, Mexico, crossing the International Bridge. This year there will be three roses traveling simultaneously on the West Coast, the central United States and the East Coast. All three roses will meet at the International Bridge to be handed over to brother Knights in Monterrey. The silver roses that will be carried 53 years after the first run belong to all jurisdictions of the Knights of Columbus in the locales through which the run passes. It is a cluster of two large flowers with a smaller rose in the middle. The stems represent unity and 12 smaller roses at the base stand for the 12 Apostles. It has become a sign of the solidarity of Catholics in North America, as well as a celebration of life from conception to natural death, through the motto, “One Rose, One Life.” Father Luis Flores-Alva, pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish in Madras, said he was made aware of the program only this year, since he became a third-degree Knight himself in April. “I think it is a beautiful manifestation of Catholic identity, love (for Mary) and tradition, since Pope John Paul II named her as the Patroness of the Americas. It goes beyond nationalities and language to bring us together,” he said. Madras is planning a prayer service for August 25, when the rose will be at the parish, which will certainly include the rosary and some kind of outdoor celebration of the tradition of roses as representing Our Lady. As the run progresses through Oregon, a prayer service of some kind will be held at each parish it visits. The schedule is as follows:

After Labor Day the rose will be in California on its journey to Mexico for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, 2013. For more information on prayer services, call your local parish or the Knights of Columbus council in your location.
