Company Overview
The Difference Engine NFP is a registered 501(c)3 Illinois organization that bridges the gap between education and the real-world workplace. TDE’s apprenticeship program empowers adults from underrepresented groups and non-traditional backgrounds with real-world technology experiences that develop their skills in professionalism, Agile workflows, and collaboration ...unlike school or Bootcamp programs, upon TDE program completion, our apprentices are ready to enter the workforce with applicable professional experience.
Origin StoryThe Difference Engine Apprenticeship grew from the desire of Actualize Coding Bootcamp to provide real experience for their graduates. Actualize CEO/Founder, Jay Wengrow had been piloting aninternship program with his graduates but found that it failed to successfully replicate a true software development experience. Kimberly Lowe-Williams was brought in as the Director of Product to right the ship and put in place processes, systems and direction for the program. After holding this role for only a few months, Kimberly combined the efforts of this program to found and create The Difference Engine as it exists today. There was clear need and overlap to provide graduates from all backgrounds with an opportunity as well as partner with organizations in need. In order to maintain its mission driven purpose as well as raise awareness about the lack of diversity in tech this organization was formed as a nonprofit. It has since been a safe place to code for over 190 developers; completed 13 web applications for organizations such as Rescue Leftover Cuisine, WeRNext Generation, Back of the Yards Coffee, Young MasterBuilders and others.
The FutureAs with all nonprofit organizations The Difference Engine relies very heavily on the sponsorships, donations and
contributions of the public. They are creating additional opportunities for their developers who even after
completing the apprenticeship still struggle to obtain placement in a traditional web development role by
partnering with startups, small businesses and more. They are hoping to partner with companies and individuals
that are passionate about extending the diversity, reach and impact of tech to those underserved,
underrepresented and without access in a real way. The Difference Engine is providing a pipeline to a set of
diverse tech talent that is and will continue to be in great demand.
