Transcript of The Difference Engine 2014 - An Insight-Driven Product Strategy Company
We are an insight-driven product strategy company.
We help businesses test assumptions in a continually changing world -
about who your customers are, what they want, and why they want it -
and build a repository of customer intimacy into a tangible business asset.
We believe in three things.
FROM THE FEET UP
Businesses have traditions - practices and beliefs that guide the business because they always have. These traditions often get in the way of innovation.
Too often, these assumptions are simply wrong.
Real innovation is about commitment and sacrifice. It’s about creating value that flows through every part of the organization.
To create new value, we identify the conditions for success by looking at every angle, removing unnecessary obstacles, and changing things from the feet up.

GO AND SEE
In order to solve business problems and create real solutions, you must go and see for yourself how these problems and opportunities play out in the real world.
Traditional market research literally puts a wall between businesses and their customers.
We tear the wall down.
6
VALUE CREATION, NOT VALUE EXTRACTION
Despite the hype around digital, mobile and social media marketing, it's not about what your customers can do for you.
It's about what you create that is worth their time, effort, and money.
We focus on what creates new value - for your customers, and for your business.
7
SIMPLE QUESTIONS, COMPLEX ANSWERS
Clients come to us to find out:
“Where did our customers go?”
“How can we best reach this new market?”
“We are stagnating. How can we grow?”
8
What we do.
STRATEGY
We help our clients figure out what needs doing.
What new products or services should you create?
How do you optimize existing products to serve customers better?
10
RESEARCH
We enable our clients to better understand their customers' needs, and to identify and explore new customer segments, new markets, and new opportunities.
Who might our customers be for new products?
Where might we find new markets for our existing products?
11
TRAINING
We train our clients on how to build intimacy with their customers through research,
how to set up useful KPIs for a successful make-test-learn product development cycle,
and how to create spaces to engage in both creative thinking and critical thinking for faster product development and prototyping.
12
How we work.
We love it when the ideas we help you develop become real products, services and experiences.
We're not seers or soothsayers or trendspotters or futurists, and we're also not McKinsey-style consultants.
So we don't leave you with a nice looking presentation full of half-baked concepts and highly stylized observations.
And we won't leave you with reams of graphs and charts to decipher.
We create tools for you to use, roadmaps for you to follow, KPIs for you to adopt, research-based resources for you to tap, and prototypes for you to build.
We design these assets to work within your existing workflows and cultures.
We train you on how to use them, how to adapt them, and how to bring others on board.
We set you up to succeed.
About Us.
