The Devil Wears Prada

• Concern with appearance • Affluent• Imperfect protagonist

Concern with appearance

• There are motivated shots of the girls’ wardrobes and then them walking towards them to signify that their outer appearance is very significant

• There are close-up shots of the girls doing their make up to show how much it means to them (a lot)

• The shot of the girl in front of her closet shows the scale of it in comparison with her which therefore emphasizes how many clothes she has

• There are mid/long shots of the girls in front of mirrors in underwear to show that they are comfortable with their bodies and do this on a regular basis

Affluent• There are several establishing shots of the location

within the first few seconds which signifies that the protagonist lives in an expensive area (New York city). The skyscrapers also give us the impression that the protagonist has a high class, well paid job.

• The eyelash curler connotes wealth as gold symbolizes money and glamour.

• The make up draws cluttered with lipstick signifies that they can afford to buy an excessive amount of high-end cosmetics.

• The measuring jug and fruit in the same shot signify that she is going to make a smoothie which suggests that she has enough money to purchase healthy food but not enough time to make a full breakfast as she has an important job

Imperfect Protagonist• The shots cut from shots of a protagonist to

another girl of the same age getting ready. This contrast illustrates the other girl as superficial and the protagonist as less concerned with her appearance

• There is a straight cut from a shot of the other girl’s high heels to the protagonist’s boots to show the protagonist’s lack of style and fashion sense in comparison with the other girl

• There is another straight cut from a shot of the other girl kissing her boyfriend before she leaves for work, which then cuts to a shot of the protagonist kissing her boyfriend. However the shot of the first girl is from a low angle to represent her as in control, whereas the shot of the protagonist is shot from a high angle to represent her as less powerful, which makes us automatically idolize her less.
