The Definitions of Art

By. Lorne Bell

Back to the Basics

• There are 10 Basic Elements of Design Used when Creating an Art Piece

Color• Color is used to create special

effects • In this piece the artist does a

great job with the color in the background and the colors of the ladies hair and dress to really make her stand out.

Value

• Value represents the amount of shading and lighting a piece has.

• The artist has shaded behind the man in the picture in order to make it appear as if the man is glowing.

Balance

• The artist uses balance in this piece with using light and dark colors. The woman on the left has dark clothes on and the shading behind her is dark, while the woman on the left has lighter colors on and the is less shading behind her.

Texture

• Texture contributes to the feeling or sense of a piece.

• This picture has great texture, with the tree coming in from the left side and the sky around the Eiffel tower. The

picture really seems life like.

Contrast

• The artist uses contrast in this piece to create a feeling that the Indian on the white horse represents good and the dark colored buffalo represents evil.

Symmetry

• Symmetry is the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other.

• In this image you can see the symmetry between the rock with each other, the trees with each other, and mountains with each other, and this creates a really peaceful look.

Rhythm

• Rhythm is a strong, regular repeated pattern of movement or sound.

• Rhythm is used in this image with the houses and the railroad tracks. The houses moving the same way as well as the train tracks, which creates a great flow to the painting.

Point

• A point is just a simple dot.• There is art that is created just by

making dots such as this one.

Line

• A line is a continuum of points.

Shape

• Both ends of a line meet to make a shape.

Form

• A form is a shape with 3 dimensions
