Welcome, here we are with the third issue of The Deerwalker. Education is and has always been a technical aspect for many of us. Anything technical demands us to be very mindful, procedural and diligent. Expressing one's idea of creativity in the field of technology, I think, is a very tricky job. We, the students of information and technology are dazzled and in love with new technological advancements. A cool program with a crazy output is more enticing than a chunk of letters on a sheet of paper. We all want to be that person writing a cool program and we all want to explore the newer boundaries. So, go ahead and let the dazzling shades of technology get the best of you. Just some quick words of caution though. While there is so much that you can do, please do take every precautionary measure to not lose the human side of you. Realize that it is us who make the technology and run it; it should not be the other way around. Technology has this knack of getting you gripped with its beauty, a beauty which is best defined in words. This issue comprises of such words; words from IT students which touches many different aspects of today's realm. We believe that we owe it to our readership to revive and reconnect the human bond with words, creativity and the world, or the world cup! With all that, this issue has also made an honest attempt to connect with the diverse facets of computer science and information technology. We hope you encourage our effort.

- BhawanaDahal, Editor-In-Chief

I am really impressed with DWIT students’ especially, The Deerwalker club's effort and dedication they have put in to publish this issue of the newsletter. Working in a magazine of high academic quality is not as simple as it seems. Students have spent lot of their time to publish issue number three by taking their time out from their regular studies. This is truly commendable. Finally, this issue has been published with highly garnished and flavored outlook, both in content and look and feel. I appreciate the team's effort for exploring new aspects and putting up a reader friendly material. Though it is a challenging task, the team has completed the project successfully. I can see that the publication has been made not only because it was their task but due to a self-compliance to do something different and better. Though, there are a lot of rooms for improvement, given the limited time frame they had to work on, the editorial team has truly managed to surpass my expectations. I have realized that The Deerwalker team has put in their heart and soul into it. I wish the team a laudable success.

COLLEGE INTERNSHIPS – NO TIME FOR IT? RudraPandey, PhD

Chairman, DWIT

e all know that Nepalese education system gives very less importance to ‘internship’ during college years. This is a bad news for all students in Nepal. Current Nepalese

education calendar should be scrapped. When I was a college student, I could not wait for summer break. Yes three months long summer breaks every academic year. I used all of those summers to learn things that my college either did not have resources to teach or they did not know how to teach. 1. The summer after first year in my college I spent reading various economics books. That’s how I got interested in economics. My college did not have a single economics course for IT students. Those few books I read changed the course of my life. I ended up pursuing my graduate study in Economics and easily earned a PhD in Labor Economics. 2. The second summer I spent visiting remote villages in Sindh, Pakistan with local Sindhi friends. By the end of the Summer I gained fluency in the local Sindhi Language. I was probably one the few foreign students in the University who could speak the local Sindhi language. With my ability to speak the local language made me hugely popular in the University and dean of engineering (who was Sindhi) actually agreed to become my advisor on the final year software project. He provided me dedicated terminals in the lab and all time access Key to the lab. This made me realize the power of learning a language. One of my professors once said, “If you want to do a business with Chinese, learn Chinese.” I could not learn the Chinese. But I made my daughter learn Chinese. That might be one of the reasons; she got admitted into great American colleges. 3. Third summer of my college, I came to Nepal and interned at National Computer Center and learned programming in COBOL. The same COBOL skill helped me lead the Y2K migration project for Fleet Bank (nor Bank of America). Without the knowledge of COBOL, I would not be able to successfully last four years (in my first job) with my “BROKEN” English. 4. The fourth summer, I spent most of the time in lab and wrote 500 pages of codes in Clipper for my final year projects. That made me a database programmer for life. Colleges do not teach us to be a database programmer. The reason

I am giving the detail about my college summers is that I want my friends who have been part of college education in Nepal realize how important summer breaks are and how important it is to give students an enough break after a successful academic year. That’s how we make our students creative and that’s how we produce thought leaders as they constantly try to relate their college education to outside world. Students around the globe starting from India, Pakistan, Europe, and Australia to America get summer breaks and many of them work during the summer to learn life skills whether that may or may not relate to their field of study. Also many of them intern in the area related to their field of study. Education Calendar in Nepal

is pretty bad. Actually we do not have a calendar. We create as we go. This is too SAD. We finish whole academic year between strike and exam preparation time. Students get more than a month of preparation time before a semester exam. What a joke! Universities do not have

control over their schedules. Student unions declare exam dates and postpone exams indefinitely. What a shame!!! If we want students to be ready for the jobs market right after the graduation, we need to provide at least couple of months of break after each academic year so that they can either seek internships or do sth they do not get to do in the college. Also, availability of student labor is good for the economy as it brings some sort of vibrancy in the labor market. Nepal’s education policy makers must think seriously about this. We all who are involved in the education industry directly or indirectly must help them think differently. Colleges can save millions during summer breaks and professors can dedicate themselves to research while students are away. Sadly, it takes years to bring a change in Nepal. In the mean time, we can’t stop working. Let us be creative and do something to provide better education and let us not push our students too far from reality. Let us find a way to keep them constantly connected with the real world problems. Only those who can solve real world problems can make a comfortable living.

DWIT: Why We Teach Our Students Mobile Smart Computing? Lava Kafle, Faculty (DWIT)/Solution Architect (DWS)

Evolving from huge monstrous building sized structures, Computers emanated as a major need, an important commodity, and a problem solver for multitudes of domains. Computers became lighter, cheaper and smaller. Processing power continually increased. It was accompanied by globalization, liberalization, and newly developed social media that incorporate huge interacting masses. Mass media now does not belong to papers, radio, televisions only, but also, proliferated via computers which are now portable, powerful, promising, and competent enough to breakthrough traditional means of communications. This era of mobile computing has become possible not only due to computing essentials, but also due to high speed gigabit fibers, improved satellite communications, manifestations of Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and availability of open information. A Cell phone is a common gadget like a watch these days in every household even in developing countries. Likewise, Smart phones have captured human hearts so much that before the release thousands of admirers stay in queue to buy the favorite brand during first launch into the market. The applications for smart mobile devices are used by millions of people at once showing the prospect of lucrative market. Unbiased, we see market shares consumed mostly by Apple Iphones, Google Androids, and Windows based gadgets alongside

a little bit larger sized Ipads, Galaxy Tabs, and Microsoft Tablets. They all Sync their applications from own cloud base unleashing the power of Cloud Computing delivered to our hand. There is a saying that Information is Power and now everyone who owns a smart phone is equally powerful that bridges all gaps seen in human societies, cultures, traditions, evolution, and geographic disparities. Now, Whole world is connected with everyone instantly and the cloud has virtualized all other server side resources serving end users with whatever they want. The laptops and desktops era has not ended but majority of worldwide net users show the distinct preference over hand-held smart mobile devices. We, Deerwalk Institute of Technology (DWIT), as a pioneering technological institution have even demonstrated possible practical implementation and impact of Google Glass, the Application Programming Interface (API), and future manifestations so our students show competence in new age of mobile computing and show their proficiency internationally. Our students are learning to plan, design, develop, test, implement and maintain mobile based solutions for varieties of platforms, brands, and needs. We are not producing programmers, but also the computer scientists for future world. So, they will also be learning the hardware and software based technologies that made the mobile world possible.

What is……

RonitPradhan, Batch 2017 Anti-Aliasing: Images and videos consist of pixels which are square in shape; while real objects have rounded corners. Anti-Aliasing is basically a technology to smooth out the pixels from images and videos. There are different kinds of anti-aliasing; the most basic being MSAA (Multi-Sample Anti-Aliasing) and FXAA (from Nvidia). Anti-Aliasing just fills out the gaps between these pixels to make it look smoother (more pleasing) rather than jaggy (staircase effect). SLI: SLI technology was developed by Nvidia. It provides users with the option for pairing multiple identical GPUs to gain high grade graphics and performance out of a single type of GPU. Nowadays we have Professional Grade SLI, which is used for 3D rendering and Multi-Way SLI for running up to four graphic cards simultaneously in a single machine. SLI technology only works for the graphic cards with the same amount onboard memory and graphics processor For example: you cannot bridge an Nvidia GE Force GTX 780 Ti with 4GB memory and an Nvidia GE Force GTX 760 with 2GB memory. So, both the graphics card should meet the above criteria in order to work concurrently in a single machine. In order to boost up your system with SLI technology, your machine needs to have the following in or on the system: I) SLI ready Operating System. II) An SLI ready motherboard with 2 x PCIe 3.0 X 16 slots. III) An SLI bridge. IV) A power supply that can provide enough power for as many cards you want to install in your machine. Ping: Ping is the method of measuring latency or the time it takes to send and receive a packet of data between two devices such as computers over a network. If we consider two computers on a network as two peoples A and B, ping would be the amount of time it takes A to say something to B and receive an answer. The lower the ping time between A and B, they can communicate more effectively. As the ping increases the communication gets delayed and stops making sense to both the parties after a while. In the online gaming world such delays are referred as lags. Lags are really annoying while playing games online. So, reduction of ping plays a vital role to prevent lags. Such reduction can only be obtained by uprooting the network connection.

How is the World Cup 2014 shaping up?

AnishThakuri, Batch 2016

he 20th edition of the biggest football tournament on the planet is scheduled to set in the stage of Brazil. On June 12, the whole world will set their sight towards Brazil as they look forward to the kick off of the most entertaining, most exciting, and the most awaited, FIFA WORLD CUP 2014.

The national football teams of 31 countries advanced through the qualification processes to participate in the main tournament along with the host nation, Brazil. A total of 64 matches is due to be played in twelve cities across Brazil in either new or redeveloped stadiums. The Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro city, which holds the record attendance for a FIFA World Cup Finals match (199,854) is the largest of the stadiums and will stage the final game of the tournament. For the very first time at a World Cup Finals, the matches will use the goal-line technology. The official ball in the 2014 World Cup is decided to be Adidas Brazuca.FIFA has successfully announced the official anthem for the tournament. The title of the song is decided to be "We Are One" by different music artists, Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte. The 32 participating teams have already been drawn into the eight groups. The groups appeared to be very harsh to some of the teams. So, unlike previous edition of WORLD CUPs, this edition has been taken as one of the toughest world cup that the world has ever seen. Talking about the groups, Croatia, Mexico& Cameroon has been pitted to Group-A along with the host nation, Brazil. The five time world cup champions, Brazil are seen as a hot favorite in the entire tournament. In Group-B, defending champions Spain will start their title defense by playing against the Netherlands, which is taken as a revenge match following the 2010 World Cup final. Chile and Australia are the next two competitors of this group. Colombia, Greece, Ivory-coast and Japan saw themselves drawn in Group-C. Group-D is regarded as the Group of Death, thus far. It sees England wrestle against Italy, Uruguay, and Costa Rica to find their way to the knockout stage. Group-E contains the 1998 world cup winners, France along with the middling team like Switzerland, Ecuador Honduras. In Group-F, the powerhouse of striking force, Argentina will meet the debutant Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran, and Nigeria as they look set to pass the group stage quite easily. The two European powerhouses, Germany and Portugal are going head to head in the Group G along with the African giants, Ghana and the North American ogre, USA. This group has caught a lot of media attention as Ghana is set to mend their bruise that happened to them in the previous World Cup against Uruguay. The final Group ,i.e. Group H comprises the underdog teams like Belgium, Russia, Korea and Algeria. From this group, many football pundits have predicted Belgium & Russia as the clear favorites to find a breakthrough into the next round. Like the previous world cups, this time too we have some list of players, who are expected to give some eye-catching performances in the tournament. While preparing a list, I do not want to mess it up without putting Messi’s name on the top. He is one of the greatest dribblers and one of the greatest strikers in the planet. After having a disappointing injury-hit half-season, the Argentinean is struggling to catch his old incredible form. The 4 times BallonD’or winner has not let anything remain in his win-list in club football and individually, but in the international level, he has only been able to collect one Olympic Gold medal. This prolific striker’s game is based on the unpredictability and greater control of the ball. His outstanding game is enough to prove he’s just a living legend of football. When we talk about Messi, we surely do not want to miss Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese skipper and the 2013 BallonD’or winner is regarded as the majestic star in the footballing world. It’ll be fascinating to see his tremendous form continue in the world cup. Being a winger, he has been able to collect as many goals as a striker has been able to gather, or even more. Another player of the host nation who has been asked for a lot by the fans is the young prodigy, Neymar. The Brazilian forward played a key role in the country’s success in the last year Confederation’s Cup and was awarded as the best player of the tournament. Luis Suarez, the Uruguayan international, who played a vital role in the country’s success in the Copa-America, is also considered as one of the best players in the upcoming tournament. Passing through several controversies, he was disliked by lot of football fans all over the world, but now he claims himself as a good person, both on and off the field. The prolific Liverpool striker has already scored an astonishing 23 goals from 19 Premier League appearances this season and looks to continue this devastating form. Dutch star man, Robin Van Persie is also one of the lethal strikers in the world football, and is also taken as the brightest prospect of the tournament. His thundering goal scoring record helped the English club, Manchester united to claim the Barclays Premier League 2012/13. The world is ready to welcome yet another world cup champion, and so are we. Having said that it’s still 5 months before we see this tournament kick off, the dates of different mouth-watering group-stage matches are the concerns of our lips even now. I am eagerly waiting to see this tournament begin and lose myself in the paradise of the World Cup… Are you?

Damn Electricity!!! SumitShrestha, Batch 2016

Early morning I woke up and switched on my mode Refreshed myself and sat to write down the code Started writing and continued till I could But electricity dozed off and ruined my mood 4 hours, and came back to my confusion Damn the shedding lasts for 8 hours session Leaving all I went to play ball Got bored, so went to the cinema hall

On my way, my mind was on something It’s very important but I can’t remember anything My eyes on the screen but my mind away from the movie A lil hard I thought and it dawned on me I remembered it was deadline for assignment submission But it didn’t matter as the date was already gone Glanced at the mirror out of all the pity I can’t see myself because of the damned electricity

ENTREPRENEURSHIP Ruby Shrestha, Batch 2017

Have you ever caught yourself being tangled by the process of job search? Have you ever thought of retaining your existence in the world even after you give up the ghost? Suppose you are an employee in a certain company. Would you not desire to be regarded as the starter of the company rather than a hired hand? It is obvious that almost everyone would have a direct 'Yes, certainly!' kind of response to these questions, but ultimately all that counts are ones' passion, dedication, tactics and strategies, and inherent capabilities to really make something happen since, these are what make up a real entrepreneur. There has always been a debate regarding the relationship between entrepreneurship and genes. But do genes really determine a person's inclination towards being an entrepreneur? 'Are entrepreneurs born or built?' is an interesting topic to discuss on. It is certainly true that heredity influences the persona of people to some degree which might assist them, directly or indirectly, to polish their entrepreneurial behaviors. But grieving over not having entrepreneurial parents is insane. Example: Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, etc… are some great entrepreneurs who did not have entrepreneurial parents. Entrepreneurship is in fact an amalgam of nature and nurture, and so, regarding its base to be solely one of the two would be simply unjust. To put it right, fluky are those who have entrepreneurial parents, their entrepreneurial traits are somehow escalated. However, those who don’t need not feel discouraged! They can definitely coach their mind to be entrepreneurial. Journey towards being an entrepreneur will obviously not be a cake walk. Each step towards the journey might be accompanied by a thunder. All we need to do is just stay calm and hang on. Only then we will be able to experience sweet taste of success. We always need to be inquisitive regarding how to get there, to the position where today stand icons like Mark Zuckerburg, founder of Facebook, or even better. For that, we require qualities such as inquisitiveness, restlessness and above all, zeal and creativity. Coming up with an idea and striving to meet it is what is necessary. We have to to be constantly trying to build something out of nothing. We need to question things around us. Furthermore, we should learn to embrace risk and challenge what is customary. This helps us learn new things, create new things. We need to learn to enthrall people on the other side with what Steve Jobs regards as 'reality distortion field', a fusion of charisma, enthusiasm and sheer showmanship. In addition to these, we require far-sightedness, meaning, we need to make a habit of thinking out of the box. Being a good entrepreneur require us to put up a thought on questions such as 'What are our goals? How do we attain the set goals? Are the goals achievable or are we being too theoretical?'. These enable us to ensure that we are heading on the right track. It is a fact that not all startup entrepreneurs succeed. Research shows that around 90% of startups fail. But the good thing is that failure helps one learn new things. Loïc Le Meur, a French entrepreneur of LeWeb, mentions that it is better to have crashedone company than none. Also, Bill Gates explains that "It is fine to celebrate success, but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure". Therefore, we need to kick off any unnecessary anxiety barring the execution of our idea, get the balls rolling as soon as we can and stick to it until completion. Finally, in words of Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari and Chuck E. Cheese's, ' A true entrepreneur is a doer, not a dreamer'.

MUSIC AnkitPradhan, Batch 2017

I consider music to be an appealing and interesting prerequisite of our life. It is not known for certain as to where and from when music evolved but, it is believed that Indian classical music, the oldest form of music, developed from Indus valley civilization. Defining it in simple terms, music is an art of producing sound in sequential order with appropriate rhythm that touches people’s heart and soul. In the word of Science, music is like space which never ends, but rather expands rapidly. If we have to expound it in terms of Mathematics, it is integration from a negative infinite point to a positive infinite point. What I mean to say is that, music does not have any limits. It had existed before the beginning of mankind – music produced by nature. And if I have to take a guess, then I am pretty sure it will be here long after we, the mankind, have left this Earth. I don’t think there is anybody who doesn’t like music. I reckon that everybody listens to music at one time or the other, perhaps only their taste for music will be different.

We are familiar about the fact that there were different genres of music like classical, rock, metal, pop etc. in different era. We all have our own choice of music, don't we? Some of us like classical music whereas others cannot stand listening to it. Some may like

rock, metal or pop music, but it’s not compulsory that all of us have to have the same choice of music. Similarly, mood also plays a decisive role on our choice/ selection of music. When we are feeling sad, we tend to have an inclination towards listening to classical music or slow rhythm music. On contrary, when we are joyous, it is more likely that we listen to romantic or rock music. Furthermore, some of us may like to listen to music while studying and some might even like to listen to it while in the loo. In ancient times, music was used as medicine to cure different diseases and likewise, at present as well, musical therapies are used as sources of

treatments in different hospitals for the same reasons. Just imagine life without music. It’d be horrible.

Martin Cooper – History of Cell Phone

BinodAryal, Batch 2017

The mobile phone has a lot to look forward to as it reaches this milestone. But it started with a humble beginning - from an engineer at a start-up called Motorola, who on 3 April 1973 made the first ever mobile phone call publicly to gather journalists in midtown Manhattan. Martin Cooper, the engineer is often referred as the father of the mobile phones. Cooper, who’s now 85 and still working in Silicon Valley, is a former Navy man and engineer who joined Motorola in 1952. He installed two-way car radios and worked on an early pager system for doctors, which required the whole building to be wired. He was invited by the Chicago police in the mid-1960s to improve their cumbersome “push-to-talk” car phones. Cooper came up with a clip-on microphone that officers could use within walking distance of the car . On, April 3, 1973, Cooper crossed Sixth Avenue clutching a telephonic gadget that would change history beyond imagination.

The device was the world’s first handheld cellphone, and Cooper had invited reporters to watch him make its firstpublic call. This new phone was not only cordless, it was small and light—just 10 inches long and a mere 1.13 kg hunk of heft. The industry giants Bell Labs and parent company AT&T, whose vision was simply to set our homes free from cupper wires and put cellphones in cars. Cooper was genuinely inspired to make a mobile cellphone after watching Captain Kirk’s gold flip-top “communicator” on Star Trek. In a fascinating and inspiring speech he gave to the Computer History Museum in 2008, Cooper shared how he organized a competition among his designers for the best portable phone. From 1973 to till now different technologies have been developed and lots of different companies have made their hands dirty in this business. Today we cannot imagine our life without a cell phone but still it isn't as reliable and affordable as wired telephones.

Development of 3D printers BinodAryal, Batch 2017

3D printers are not new: they've been around for 20 or 30 years, used by designers to make rapid prototypes of products they are developing. It's a sort of extension of computer aided design, which has transformed professions such as engineering and architecture. You draw the design on a screen, and the data then drives a machine that spreads thin layers of plastic or metal powder on top of each other. Each layer is solidified by a sort of laser welder or sinter; at the end of the process, you blow off the unfiltered powder and the object you drew on the screen is transformed into complex, intertwined three-dimensional reality. 3D printing takes weeks or months off the design process, but for years it stayed as a prototype process, trying things out. Now that's changing. Better techniques and materials are turning 3D printers into manufacturing operations - so-called additive manufacturers - as opposed to the cutting, grinding and sawing that has symbolized engineering up to now. In theory, every single product can be different, made to measure, as operators learn how to make things with mixed materials on larger scales. As of 2012, 3D printing technology has been studied by biotechnology firms and academia for possible use in tissue engineering applications in which organs and body parts are built using inkjet techniques. In this process, layers of living cells are deposited onto a gel medium or sugar matrix and slowly built up to form three-dimensional structures including vascular systems. The first production system for 3D tissue printing, was delivered in 2009, based on NovoGenbioprinting technology. Several terms have been used to refer to this field of research: organ printing, bio-printing, body part printing, and computer-aided tissue engineering, among others. Advances in the 3D printing of human tissue have moved fast enough that San Diego-based bio-printing company Organovo now expects to unveil the world's first printed organ -- a human liver by the end of this year. The liver tissue model that Organovo plans to release by the end of this year isfor research use only and will be used in the laboratory for medical studies and drug research. Organovo's researchers were able to bring together fibroblasts and endothelial cells, which performs the function of developing tiny vascular networks, allowing the company to achieve thick tissue with good cell viability. According to research, approximately 18 people die every day waiting for an organ transplant. But that may change someday sooner than we think; all because of 3D printing.

An Inside Look – The Media Club Sunil Shrestha, Batch 2016

Among the various clubs, Media Club is one of the most active and eye-catching club in DWIT. This club is responsible for bringing up introductory video and different news videos related to DWIT, for the very first time. It launches news-videos fortnightly. Perfect co-ordination, efficient leadership and an intense dedication of the club members are some of the key reasons that have helped this club become one of the most fascinating clubs in DWIT. The club is currently being run by 10 members under co-ordination and supervision of Mr. PratibhAcharya and Ms.BhawanaDahal. As per one of the members of the club, they were offered

2-session training to work on windows movie maker, Photography, and video editing. Despite the stress induced by assignments and studies, I was eager to know how this club managed to meet the deadlines and prepare such an amazing video. In my quest to knowing more about the club, I learned that the task division within the members would happen in a very effective way. Also, an appropriate way of completing the works by the individuals would be suggested, which eventually resulted in an excellent output. After developing two videos covering different news happening in DWIT, The

Media Club is now up to preparing a video featuring an interview with the chairman of DWIT ,RudraPandey. Also, a special package including “dos and don’ts” is expected to be produced soon in collaboration with college principal, Mr. SurendranathAdhikari. Wrapping things up, The Media Club is really working up to the expectations of the members of DWIT. The club is doing pretty well to tackle the problems occurring in their way. And, as per them, with time they are developing their skills in leadership, interaction, and proper management. .

Pros and cons of social networking site AsmitaKunwar, Batch 2017

James Karl Buck, a graduate students of United States happened to be travelling in Egypt during their anti governmental protest. He was arrested and detained in Egypt.Prior to his sentence,he sent out a tweet from the twitter to those who he knew and let them know about his problem. This began a quick process and a quick release. This is one of the best example for the utilization of social networking site. JhonZimmerman, a 26 old year a tour manager of the Gateway Plan was recently burdened with 87 charges, particularly 23 counts of sexual violence penetration of a child under 16 years, 3 rapes, and multiple counts of incident acts and using internet for procuring minor and child pornography. These above mentioned incidents are possible only due to the existence of social networking site. So, social networking site has both features: pros and cons. The idea of online networking site has been revolutionary since just few years.it has always provided a medium for the people to be connected with each other. Today, it is rare to find a single person who hasn’t heard about Facebook,Twitter, Mysapceor anyone among the hundreds of social networking site existing. Social networking is the platform that enables the user to create a public profiles in a particular website and form different kinds of relationships with other members of the same social networking site. The internet is occupied by millions of people throughout the world who are in search of people with whom they can share their ideas, feelings, different experiences of life. People also get to know about different other information such as job vacancies, new products that are launched in the market, event that are going to be organized and many more .For me social networking site symbolize the mini world. PROS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE

The first thing that strike our mind about the social networking site is that it is the best way for the people to have a connection between different groups of people and this is one of the best reason for people to join the social media. We are able to find out our friends who were not in contact for many years, we get to know about the things that are happening with our friends, relatives and every one with whom we are connected. Just finding friend having good connection is not the limit of social networking site. We can utilize it for the professional use too .Every social networking site has its own features but the main commitment of

all social media is to connect friends and families and create a kind of strong social relationship among them. These social networking site are free of cost so people from any background and any age limit can easily access .Social networking site promotes the interaction with friends and family; offer the teacher and student valuable access to educational support and materials;facilitate social and political change ;and disseminate useful information rapidly. A wide range of opportunity exist when new people come in contact. Many time just meeting a right person can take your business and career to a new level. For the people

like writer ,singer ,actor social networking sites are the best place to promote their abilities and also provides extra exposure that would not have been possible in absence of these site. CONS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE

Along with the advantage of social networking site their too exist some disadvantages. These social networking site has restricted us within the computer and we lack face to face contact.Though we get connected with numerous people it is difficult to find out who is genuine and who isn’t? Fraudulent activities can be used by malicious people in these site .Social networking has a tendency of making people addict on it which cause serious problems. A lot of time and effort is consumed in establishing the relation in these sites so it is time consuming too. Another most common problem is, online

bullying which has become popular and some of them have taken lives as a response to negative effects of gossip and bullying in internet space. Sometime quick interaction and connection with people will allow you to connect with a wrong person who doesnot have best interest at hand. Along with this social networking site has reduces the person’s ability to socialize and communicate effectively in the real world. Even researchers found that there is a relationship between increased internet and social networking site and the prevalence of depression. As mentioned above there are both advantages and disadvantages of social networking site. One can interpret it on either wayas a great means to socialize themselves and have strong bonding or also can consider it as waste of a time.We human being are social animals and it is impossible to live all alone throughout the life without anyone and it is the best platform for us to have bonding easily in this modern society. We human beings are to all other living beings in the world as have the capability to distinguish between wrong and right. There is always a middle way and only we can choose how to find that path or how to utilize the path in a best possible way. We should think twice before trusting someone especially when it comes to socializing on internet.

Advantages of Social Networking Sites:

1. Social networking site spread information

faster than other media.

2. Law enforcement uses social networking

site to catch and prosecute the criminals

3. Social networking site help students do

better at a school

4. Social networking site allow people to

improve their relationship and make new

friends.

5. Social media helps empower business

women

6. Social media sites helps employers to find

employee and job-seekers to find job

Negligence – the devil we carry on our backs BidishAcharya, Batch 2016

A couple of days back, I read a sign in a wall of a street that read something like “Throwing waste in this place might lead you to a fine of about 1,000 rupees”. The amount might be more or less different, I’m not sure. I looked around that place; there were no guards watching, nor any look-alike detectives, whatsoever. The one throwing the garbage should give an identity of himself in the waste, or what? Fine, I agree that it might have been to aware people about keeping their places clean. Caustic remark, just 2-3 steps ahead of that place was filled with garbage. Yes, Negligence is the problem here. I don’t know how I am affected by this problem or how it accounts to my daily life, but, this is one problem that I don’t like seeing at all. When a person or a community or the government does not act the way a reasonable person or a community or the government should, it results into negligence. While wandering around the streets of the town, every once in a while I see the shadows of negligence. Once, I was walking on a street of Shantinagar, and my eyes struck a hoarding board. That hoarding board was advertising a school. And in the bottom of the hoarding board, it read “250 meters ahead”. And, while I was coming back the same street, the same hoarding board read “250 meters ahead”. The problem here is the same distance sign existing in the both sides of a hoarding board, and the reason -“Negligence”. Clearly, where should a person head to if he/she’s searching for the same school and happens to strike the same hoarding board? Negligence, is the biggest problem, not because it is the problem we face, because it is the problem we arise. We Nepalese are a real expert in neglecting things. I do have some examples in which negligence is at its peak. Let’s start with the negligence I see in restaurants all the time. People eat up their food, use a tissue paper to get their hands clean and then they throw it on the floor. They

do realize that the dustbin is just two steps ahead of them but they’ll throw it right on the floor without giving it a second thought. Ironically, the same person feels uneasy to throw a “kulfi”

stick on the floor in Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The point that I’m trying to make is why let places activate your ghost of negligence? We need not always go back to throwing wastes to get an example of negligence. We can see negligence throwing its shades everywhere. Be it managing an organization or meeting the deadlines; be it organizing an event or completing the assignments; negligence has been able to claim its share everywhere. We need not go any farther, if we’ll analyze our

daily life, we’ll see the negligence lying within ourselves. From the time we neglect our alarm while waking up to the time we hesitate to switch the lights off before sleeping, our actions will carry the trace of “Negligence” all day. And yes, negligence results in procrastination; we’ll be piled up with a hell loads of tasks tomorrow, if we keep neglecting our responsibilities today.

Before wrapping things up, I really want to ask you people to stop neglecting things and have a sound ambition of “Whatever I do, I’ll do it the best way I can”. Your best when you’re healthy might oppose your best when you’re sick. But under any circumstances, doing your best will help you to avoid any kind of self-judgment and

regret in the future. You know, I know that one person can’t change the trend of community or the way people act or feel. And I’m not saying that you can turn things upside down. All I’m asking you people is to root “negligence” completely out of your mind; your activities; your life. You’ll not be able to make all the people act in an appropriate way, no, you won’t. But, you, yes you, will be revolutionized into a completely different person. You will be well issued with your concerns. And to admit that you’re not the part of the ongoing trend of neglecting responsibilities, feels great, doesn’t it?

Quotes… “The best way to predict the future is to create it” -Peter Drucker “Nothing replaces intensity of effort and persistence you put forward on anything, certainly not pure intellect” -Ben Smith (Founder of Merchant Circle) “Learn to acknowledge the people, whose shoulders you stood, to achieve your success” -Lenny Wosornu (Co-founder and CEO at CLAK impressions)

Your best when you’re healthy might oppose your best when you’re sick. But under any circumstances, doing your best will help you to avoid any kind ofself-judgment and regret

in the future.

Computer& Hypnosis Nikita Gautam, Batch 2017

"Hypnosis is a fascinating psychological phenomenon of the human mind in which a participant who is hypnotized co-operatively interacts as per the suggestions of the hypnotist. Hypnosis originated thousands of years ago and has been in practice among different groups of people around the globe. As of now, hypnosis has opened up countless possibilities among the researchers and has assisted them to fabricate medically and therapeutically beneficial outcomes. Hypnosis has been a convenient technique for people in reduction of anxiety and pain, making desired changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and so forth." My professor quoted these sentences in my first psychology class. This was my first day of college, entirely in a new city filled with crowds of people busy with their own stuffs. I was staring outside the window when my professor entered the class. I don’t know what was it that pulled me towards psychology and that class. Maybe it was something associated with my younger brother who is a patient of "Anthropophobia". His suffering makes me feel horrific. So, when I heard from one of my closest friends that hypnosis can be a treatment for his pain, I, without bothering to figure out whether I really like Psychology, joined the class. I wasn't really listening to my professor when she was introducing all these new and amazingly fascinating terms of psychology in front of the class. Instead, I was in my own world, occupied with numerous imaginations. Suddenly, my attention switched from my space of my imagination to the mood of the class when someone from the crowd raised a voice asking, "Can computers hypnotize people?". That question automatically stimulated my bored cells since it was a topic of my interest. The professor responded in a pretty simple way. She mentioned, "Technology is growing at a massive speed; if there arrives any faster way to change your life, then it’s going to be nothing else but a gift of computer hypnosis". That answer, however, did not quite satisfy me. I was back in my apartment by 5 p.m. Throughout that day I couldn’t focus my attention towards any other subjects, but "Computer Hypnosis". How can they be related? This thought occupied my mind for that entire day. We've always have had a stereotype about the process of hypnosis. We generally relate it to a person carrying a crystal, moving it to and fro, and hence making a conscious part of our mind hypnotized and so on. We have always imagined it this way. So, Computer Hypnosis was an entirely fresh term for me. I couldn’t hold myself and started researching about it. I was surfing around in different blogs and websites when something popped onto my screen. I guess it was an advertisement. I never followed anything like that before, but that day, I did. It took me to a page simple on the outside, that is, on the design part, yet complex in its content. After having thoroughly viewed that webpage, I came up with a determined decision. I planned to visit that particular institute, which used a computer, rather than a psychiatrist, as a tool for hypnotizing people. Finally, after a week, it was that day- the day I was supposed to accomplish my decision.

On that day, I was getting strong vibes that something extraordinary was about to happen. My anticipation turned true. I discovered something new, something fascinating to watch. I sat down in front of an unusual device, connected with loads of wires coiled around each other. Suddenly something appeared in front of the screen- glowing lines with random patterns. Wow! What a feeling that was. I was drawn away with its movement. I can just remember how deeply I was staring at the machine, and nothing else. Later, I was surprised to find myself waking up on a couch. The thing that had put me into this state of mind was nowhere to be found. I suddenly felt so calm and so satisfied with myself. How could this happen? I am a kind of person who is always boring, rude and into my own world. I felt happy after days or months or maybe, even years; I can hardly remember that. I was back in my apartment wherein one of the corners, I would always find someone sketching out something weird and never wanting anyone's attention. Who else could that person be? It was none other than my younger brother. It had been 7 years that he hadn't been to school. He had locked himself up making walls, pencils and papers his best friends. We couldn’t figure out what had happened to him back then, but ever after that day our lives have been miserable to its extremity. I love my brother a lot, so such s condition of his really used to piss me off and prevent me from doing anything interesting. Even doctors were not successful enough to handle him at times. They had been giving the best of their care to him. But nothing was working well. The main problem lies in the following question. How can someone treat you when you fear confronting him or her? I had always wanted to help him out. Well, after the Computer Hypnosis session that I had attended, I couldn't help keeping it to myself and so, shared it with my parents. After all, they have been the ones who have suffered more than anyone else. "Seeing one's own child in pain is more painful than death." I hear them sharing this kind of thoughts with each other, sometimes with tears rolling down their cheeks. So, I told them about the therapy that those people provide. We then decided to try that therapy out on him. He was asleep, when we carried him up and took him to the institute. Suddenly, he woke up. Oh! That scene- something that no one, especially my brother, would ever wish to see. Terribly horrified he was to be surrounded by many people. We were unable to handle him. So, we hurriedly dragged him into the hypnotizing room. Finally, he became calm after a while, with no one around except my mother. We were watching him through the glass window. He was calm, like a silent river flowing in its own smooth pace. We were surprised to see that. Actually, for the first time after I got hypnotized, I was seeing someone being hypnotized. That was awesome to watch. Looking at my brother so calmly and quietly concentrating, with a smile on his face like a joy of the first rain, was a satisfying sight. I kept on staring at him. His facial muscles changed their shapes, reflecting deep emotions inside. How could a machine bring variation in a human being's nature? I was amazed. Therapy session ended after 4 hours and I found him resting peacefully on the couch. At that moment, I was

Page 12: The Deerwalker Volume I Issue III

ISSUE #3 THE DEERWALKER

Page 12

neither expecting a positive outcome nor a negative. I was just happy to have seen a peaceful side of my dear brother. After a while, he opened his eyes with a smile. That smile! What a serene sight that was! There wasn't any highly remarkable change in my brother's behavior. But, I was happy that it certainly showed up some positive momentary impacts. This practice continued for at least 2 years long. In this interval of time, he finally spoke to us, though not so much. But even a single word from him was worth more than a speech by any president or a long story by an old man. One day he wrote a letter to me stating, "Though I fear from you, you are my God!". I couldn’t hold my tears from rolling down. He also

explained how this hypnosis session was fruitful for him and how it eventually was added to his best friend's list. He loves the pattern, he loves the voice, and he loves everything about the machine. I don’t know whether time will heal his pain or whether I will become a good psychiatrist. However, all I know is that the happiness, the smile, on an important person's face changes one's mode of life for good. Sketches, that reflects more colorful lives, and the so-called "Computer Hypnosis" in a way have changed my life and hence, have made me feel that changes are in fact good.

Movie Review : Gravity

BimalGaire, Batch 2016 Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men), a name little known has created a masterpiece which will be remembered for a long time in Hollywood. His “Gravity” has set a new benchmark for sci-fi movies in the Hollywood industry. To watch Gravity in anything less than the huge screen is to denigrate a work of art and magnificence. He has painted a whole picture of the space in the mind of the viewers, his piece of art, like a painting on a huge canvas. Gravity is a technical wonder of a survival story which is caused by a catastrophe in the space. It has given the audience a whole new experience by showing them what space is really like. This heart touching flick maintains both suspense and tragedy throughout the story. The success and admiration of Gravity are explained by a handful of Academy Awards nomination (10) including best Picture, best director and best Actress, a solid 8.3 rating on IMDB anda strong box office collection, i.e. $700 million. There are two characters we see in the movie, Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock)and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney). The whole movie revolves around these two characters. Ryan Stone, a first-time space traveler finds herself in a shuttle alongside Matt Kowalski to repair the Hubble telescope. When debris destroys the telescope and their ride home, she is left terrified in the space. Alongside Kowalski, she is taking a mission to find the way back into the earth, learning all she can from her more experienced partner, struggling to control the anxious heartbeat that flutters on the soundtrack along with her

shallow breathing and the sporadic hiss of backpack thruster jets that creates a sense of panic in the movie. The dead body of one of the astronauts moving in the space is shown purposely to show the damage caused by the disaster in a reflective manner. The moment in which Kowalski sacrifices his life for Ryan Stone is the tragic part of the movie. She does everything she can to survive this disaster and finds her way back home, finally. The landing of Ryan’s ship on Earth creates a joyous and a sigh of relief among the

viewers. The courage that has been shown by Ryan Stone thrive us and gives us an inspiration to go on with our lives and never give up, on

any condition. It is a slow-paced movie; some of the

viewers may find it boring at certain times. The main focus has been given to the cinematography and the film lacks strong conversation and well written screenplay. Nevertheless, the direction has been excellent and overshadows the downsides of the movie. The

similarity in the story lineup can be found with other well praised

movies such as “Cast Away”, “Apollo 13” and “127 Hours”.

The movie is best enjoyed in the 3-D version,

you cannot settle with anything less. It's a beautiful movie; it overwhelms you with the idea of space itself and

life-trembling actions are well duplicated from reality. If you enjoy cinematographic beauty then, you will not want to miss this one. With, a few Academy Awards in the hand, by the end of March, it will be considered as one of the must-see movie in Hollywood.

Use of plastics – a collective irrational decision BhishanBhandari, Batch 2017

The lack of clear logic or a logically stupid attempt/approach may be considered to be the definition of irrationality. The inability of farsightedness in decision making that may lead it to be titled as stupid decision accommodating some high positive integer count of negative effects over the society, state or the entire planet is irrational decision. Such kind of decision when made by the senate, government or the huge mass of population is taken as collective irrational decision which is vigorously expanding its supremacy over the under developed and developing countries while still practiced in some developed countries. There is no harm in claiming the topic “use of plastics” as a representative of such numerous collective irrational decisions. Plastics are chemically manufactured substance that has become ease to access excessively in the date of 2014 that seems to cover its hideous effects with its ease of production in terms of expense. Use of plastics and its products can be defended as an irrational decision because of its adverse chemical effect over the planet and its habitants. There are various reasons human population choose to make use of plastics. As physics defines plastics holds the property of excellent thermal and electrical insulation which has convinced human race to declare its enormous production. Electrical hazards are less likely to evolve due to this property. In comparison to parallel items like iron, steals, jutes and tins, plastic products are inexpensive to produce pushing the financial efficiency higher than any other items and hence encouraging the production firms to substitute every possible product’s ingredient with plastics. In addition, Ferous rusts when exposed to humidity while plastics do not even when showered with high velocity of water. The installation of plastic products gets wisely efficient in terms of manpower and cost which favors the collection of huge mass of consumers by the production industries. Easy to manufacture, easy to install and affordable, why would it be ranked as an irrational decision then? These (plastics) chemically produced and mechanically structured non-living buddy may seem to be friendly and amazing stuff on the surface but it would be no sin to unveil the fact that these seemingly cool stuffs consume Bisphenol A (a poisonous chemical) to build itself. If BPA were a human being, it would be sentenced to death for minimizing the count of population throughout the globe. Breast cancer, early puberty, heart disease, infertility (males/females), brain alterations, etc are the common crimes this chemical manages to commit and to the surprise still stands first to be used in production of plastics. The higher rigidity of the plastic products is directly proportional to the use of BPA. Either it be the CPU of an IT professional or milk feeding bottles for babies, plastics has printed its dominance in every possible corners of the world thereby performing its task to harden the plastics and disrupt the endocrine system of living beings side by side.

Environmental pollution, the most heated topic throughout the planet at least in this decade would never be a topic to focus deeply in the curriculum of schooling without the endless contribution of plastics. The disgust and ugliness plastic waste introduces is not only unhygienic to the human race but a vivid poison to the environment too. Despite the negative impact of plastic products to the entire globe, the massive production and hence use of it is an adamant decision in which we all have somehow contributed either in the production end or as a user. Xylene, ethylene, benzene are some chemicals that actively participate in the manufacture of plastic bags when burnt or exposed to air causes various disorders in humans and animals, infertility in the soil, warming of the planet and conclusively hampers the environment. The condition gets even worse when these plastics catches fire at low temperature resulting never intended chemicals namely dioxins and furans proposing possible handouts to cause lungs cancer and suffocation. The suffocation would not be centered above the lithosphere as the plastic chemicals behold the pugnacious characteristics thereby killing the water habitants and hampering the quality of continuous flowing H2O. The two zeros after a single five is a tough count initiating from zero. With no hesitation divulging the fact that a normal plastics costs some 500 years to decompose may drop one’s jaw at astonishment. This might be a power armor to defend the topic“use of plastics” as a representative of dozens of irrational decisions. The reusability of the plastic products gets impractical due to the flimsiness it attains after its very first use. The fact that non-renewable sources like oil by products and natural gases being allocated to produce plastic products are relatively diminishing from the planet may contribute to the irrationality in decision to use and produce plastics abundantly. Tins and irons when needed to recycle undergo a high degree of temperature and pressure procedure to melt making it reusable in any way while burning of plastics reproduces dioxins and furans proving the hazardous property of massively used plastics. Decision made, consequences faced. What can be done? A lot.A lot because there is always a solution to a problem. Little steps from the public, little from the government/ country can help minimize the effects of widely used and accepted plastics. From public the contribution may be to use less plastic and reuse when possible whereas the government has a lot to exercise in this topic of irrationality. The government can encourage the use of aluminum instead of plastics as a substitute to plastics with the promotion of stainless steels by the production firms through mass speech and awareness programs in a consistent manner. If science could find some substitute to BPA which is environment friendly, the irrational decision could cause the positive impact over an individual, country and the entire globe. Reduce, Refuse, Reuse and Recycle are the most popular keywords as far as plastics are concerned but for some reason not practiced effectively. Every

Page 14: The Deerwalker Volume I Issue III

ISSUE #3 THE DEERWALKER

Page 14

individual can bestow from their level in minimizing the production of these seemingly heroic product with hideous effects over the world. Reducing and recycling efforts may be cultured by the state while the power to refuse and reuse stands with us.

Through our collective efforts the entire planet can be a better place. Share what you have learnt and contribute your bit in savior of the earth and its habitats.

Book Review – Siddhartha PrabinaNeupane, Batch 2016

Published in 1922 AD, Siddhartha is one of the most influential books written by German writer Hermann Hesse. The book was entitled to Nobel Prize in 1946. The story deals with the spiritual journey of a young guy named Siddhartha, during Gautam Buddha's time to attain enlightenment “Nirvana”. The story takes place in ancient India when Siddhartha, the son of a Brahmin family decides to leave his home in the hopes of gaining spiritual illumination by joining Samanas; a group of wandering ascetics who have renounced the material world and who travel to different places for their basic sustenance. Siddhartha is accompanied by his best friend Govinda in this whole journey. While living with Samanas, they feel like they are not satisfied with the thoughts, they were in search for, although travelling with the religious leader Gautama Buddha. Hesse wastes no words and relates a simple plot. The thoughts and feelings of Siddhartha are communicated directly to the audience. Each part of the story continues adjacent to the series of experiences he got from the previous phase of his life. When he joins the Samanas, he determines to leave behind the teachings of his youths and put aside his physical possessions. This lets him to

think for himself as an effect of which his psyche suffers and he develops arrogance. He meets the Buddha, who he admires for being childlike and becomes determined to make himself similar to the Buddha. Each time, he discovers a new goal and he orients himself to triumph over the goal. Hesse is very interested in the “Journey” that is life; this book can even be considered a

Bildungsroman, in which not only does a boy grow into a man, but a “soul” grows from the physical world of “Knowing” to the spiritual world of “Learning”. Though set in India, the concerns of Siddhartha regarding the conflict between mind, body and spirit are universal and this very concern is the main reason for the huge success of the book worldwide. The novel’s mystical Indian setting and the catchphrase to “find yourself” are the most appealing repute of the book "Siddhartha". Personally, Siddhartha has been one of my favorite readings till date. It has so much to explain about eastern culture and philosophy. The way story has been brought up and the series of conflicts in the character’s mind represents the question every human have in their life. “I have never seen a man look and smile, sit and walk like that, he thought. I, also, would like to look and smile, sit and walk like that, so free, so worthy, so restrained, so

candid, so childlike and mysterious. A man only looks and walks like that when he has conquered his self. I also will conquer myself.” The book is wonderful in that it is so short, yet so meaningful.
