In the spring of 1994, two friends came together in Lancaster County and started building decks. They loved working together. They had a passion to serve their customers with integrity. Stump’s Quality Decks and Porches was born.

The industry has changed a lot over the past 20 years, and Stump’s has changed along with it, committed to be innovative industry leaders. But one thing hasn’t changed here at Stump’s – our dedication to enjoy working together as a team, serving our customers with integrity.

We now build over 300 decks and porches every year. But we are still a local, family-centered Lancaster Country business. Our owners are out on the job every day, making sure that our company values flow through our entire team, from helping our customers design their project, to putting in the last screw. Stump’s customers are a happy bunch, and that makes us happy. But don’t take our word for it, check us out on Angie’s List or Houzz to hear it from other homeowners like you!

If you are looking for someone to help you turn your dream project into a reality with personalized service, good communication, and craftsmanship – then we would be honored to work with you.

How much time will you spend caring for your deck?

Planning your project will include selecting the right building contractor and determining exactly what type of deck you will have. We want your planning and decision making to be an easy experience. While you don’t need to have all of the details nailed down beforehand, knowing the answers to these questions will make the process go more smoothly:

1) How much time will you spend maintaining your deck?

2) How big should your deck be?

3) Do you want to preserve the view of your backyard?

4) How will the weather affect the enjoyment of your deck?

5) What are important access points?

6) How much are you willing to spend?

7) What type of materials, color selections and options do you prefer?

8) Should you get a permit & what is the permit procedure?

How much time will you spend caring for your deck?

If you want to keep maintenance to a minimum, we recommend going with either capped composite or capped PVC decking. These products are much better than the original composite decking of 10-20 years ago both in beauty and durability. If you don’t mind a little work, you will save money going with pressure-treated wood. If you want something in the middle, the combination of wood decking and low-maintenance railing is a happy medium.

How big should your deck be?

Maybe the better question here is: What will you use your deck for, and how much will you use it?

Plan a specific area on the deck for everything you’d like to do, such as dining, grilling, and seating. Make sure each area is large enough to allow easy access from one area to another. Be sure your dining area is large enough for a table and chairs. Designate your grill area so the grill is away from vinyl products.

Do you want to preserve the view of your backyard?

When selecting railing, consider products that help you to see more of your backyard or pool.

Here are a couple of suggestions: Think about black aluminum balusters or stainless steel cable, both of which attract less attention than bulkier white vinyl balusters. Another way to keep the backyard in focus is to lower the elevation of your deck several inches, which also lowers the railing and allows you to see more of your surroundings.

How will the weather affect the enjoyment of your deck?

If your deck will get a lot of sun, consider a roof or pergola over one portion of the deck for shade.

Don’t want a roof or pergola? Then choose decking products with lighter colors, which naturally reflect heat more than darker colors. Also avoid uncapped composite deckboards, which are known for absorbing heat.

Do you love being outside even when it rains? We work with many underdeck products which help you to stay dry under your deck no matter what the weather.

What are important access points?

Plan your deck for foot traffic patterns. Think about how your deck will be used and design entrances to keep criss-cross traffic to a minimum. For example, if you grill frequently, be sure to keep the grill area close to the house entrance.

A deck is an important part of your home. Hiring a reputable company to build your project will ensure quality & longevity but will require some investment.

Many of our standard sized decks are between ten and twenty thousand dollars, depending on the materials and size of the project. We also build many larger decks ranging from twenty to as much as fifty thousand. Many of our roof projects cost between ten and twenty thousand dollars.

Today’s synthetic decking materials have greatly improved from the earlier composite and PVC products. They come in a variety of colors and textures, and most are warranted against staining and fading. Keep in mind that all decking products will require periodic pressure-washing to keep them looking new.

Wood DeckingLighting Options

Step Lighting:Illuminate your deck’s steps with low voltage lighting. There are numerous lighting options available.

We recommend the following lighting products:

Post Cap LightsPost Cap Lights are attached to the top of the railing posts and offer two advantages over post accent lights: 1) 360 degree illumination 2) post cap lights can be installed on corner posts whereas accent lights cannot.

Post Accent Lights If you want subtle lighting that doesn’t change the look of your railing, we recommend post accent lights that attach to the side of the rail post and direct light downward. Here are a few options:

To meet the increasing demand for low-voltage deck lighting, we at Stump’s offer durable, proven LED lights from reputable companies such as Aurora and Timbertech. These lights add

beauty and safety to your deck project.

Most of the lighting options are available in colors white, black, bronze, kona and tan.

Wood Decking

Ipe & other exotic hardwoods Nothing matches the beauty and durability of ipe and cumaru decking. If you maintain them regularly, their rich colors and textures will last for decades. Because of their density, they have an incredible resistance to insects and are virtually fireproof.

If you insist on real wood for your deck project, and are comfortable with the required maintenance, here are some of the most popular choices in wood that are available:

Pressure-treated yellow pine Pressure-treated pine is the most economical decking available. It’s plentiful, easy to install, and will last 10-15 years or longer. However, do keep in mind that it’s more prone to splintering and cracking, even with proper maintenance.

Railing Materials

O ur customers are normally more particular about railing than decking, and for good reason. It’s the most visible element of the deck, and they also want it

to be safe. Here are some of the styles that we most commonly work with:

Composite Railing Composite railing would include brands such as Timbertech Radiance Rail, and Trex Transcends Rail. These popular brands are made of composite material with a hard shell PVC coating to prevent mold and mildew.

Vinyl Railing Vinyl is the most economical choice for low-maintenance railing. Vinyl railing requires no staining or sealing, and generally needs only an occasional power-wash to restore its color. It also has a relatively strong resistance to scratches.

Aluminum Railing Aluminum is a popular choice for railing for the same reasons that it is the metal of choice for airplanes—it is strong and durable, lightweight, and naturally rust-free. It also blends well with any type of wood or vinyl exterior components (decking, siding, trim, etc.) Aluminum railing has a powder-coated finish, which means the paint is baked on to prevent peeling and flaking.

www.padeckbuilder.com 1515

Aluminum Balusters Aluminum balusters can be used with vinyl, wood, and many types of composite railing. The thinner, darker balusters allow more visibility and absorb light instead of reflecting it.

Wood Railing Pressure-treated wood and hardwoods are frequently used with deck railing. If you’re looking for something decorative, we work with many skilled local woodworking shops that can fabricate custom wood railing.

Other Railing Besides the more common railings mentioned above, there are countless other options available in deck railing. Stainless-steel cable railing, glass panel railing, and custom wood railing are just some of the railing choices available in today’s market. We enjoy the challenge of something out of the ordinary.

Other Upgrades

Hidden Fasteners While face screwed decking is still a durable option, hidden fasteners have exploded in popularity during the last five years. We work with a variety of dependable hidden fastener systems, depending on the decking product.

Gates Gates are a great safety feature, especially for a family with young children. Gates can be made to match virtually any railing material that we offer.

Deck Trim & Skirting As a standard, we cover the outer bandboard of low-maintenance decks with matching fascia. As an option, we offer either lattice or vertical skirting. We also offer stone veneer on the deck or roof supports, which is a good way to tie a deck into the existing design of your home.

Spa Area Take your deck to the next level by installing a spa. The spa can be installed on the surface of the deck or recessed into the deck which makes for easy accessibility.

Stone & Landscape Besides inhibiting weed growth, stone and landscape fabric adds a finishing touch underneath a deck area.

Other Upgrades

17

Flower Boxes & Benches Benches, flowerboxes, and raised table areas are an excellent way to add both function and beauty to a deck. These are custom built on site, using the same material as the deck surface.

Picture Frame & Accents If you’re looking to think outside the “box”, consider decking accents such as a picture-frame border, a diamond inlay, or diagonal decking. These options also allow you to incorporate multiple colors.

Design Features Over the last twenty years, deck design has evolved rapidly from the standard 12’ x 12’ square deck. Multi-level decks, bumpouts, and radius sections are just a few ways to set your deck apart and at the same time keep it consistent with the architectural features of your home.

Pergolas Add the right touch of elegance to your deck with a custom built Vinyl or Wood Pergola. An outdoor pergola can be used to train your roses or vines, create a touch of architectural interest or offer loved ones a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery.

Patio Awnings An awning is a low-cost alternative to a permanent roof structure. A retractable awning gives you the option of an uncovered deck if you’d like to enjoy full sunshine, while at the same time providing shade for a hot summer evening.

Importance of obtaining the necessary permits.

Obtaining a building permit can seem intimidating. However, permits are

required by law and they can eliminate future problems if you would want to

sell your house. Acquiring a building permit also protects you from unlicensed

contractors.

We handle the permit process to make life easier for you. All we need from you

is a copy of the plot plan of your property, which is an overhead view of your

property complete with property lines, setbacks, and existing structures.

Covered Decks, Screen Porches, and Sunrooms

www.padeckbuilder.com 19

Importance of obtaining the necessary permits.

19

Covered Decks, Screen Porches, and Sunrooms

A roof structure or screened enclosure over a new or existing deck is a valuable addition,

providing protection against sun, rain, and insects, while adding more aesthetic and resale value

than an awning or a gazebo.

Remember that a roof structure doesn’t have to cover an entire deck. If your deck is large, consider

covering only one portion and leaving the remainder uncovered. Besides reducing the price of

the project, a partially covered deck allows you to enjoy the sun more on cooler days when the

shade isn’t needed.

Ideally, a roof structure should be designed so that it blends into the profile of the home, instead

of looking like it was an afterthought. Because of this, we match the shingles and siding of the roof

with those of the existing home whenever possible.

20 Browse with your phone or tablet for more information. www.padeckbuilder.com

Roof Designs & Enclosures

Adding a roof structure can add or detract from the rear of your home, depending on its size and shape. Here are three common roof design

options:

Hip Roofs A hip roof is a beautiful combination of gable and lean-to designs.

Gable Roofs Gable roofs, also called A-frame roofs, are the most common style of roof addition. They are designed to be the centerpiece of the backyard and are especially good if the back of your house is one straight wall, with no bumpouts. There are also many unique ways to accent a gable roof, such as a webbed gable or an eyebrow along the eave.

Lean-to-Roofs Lean-to or shed roofs, while they may seem simpler than A-frame roofs, can be a much better fit if your roof spans 20’ or more. They also blend well with an existing gabled sunroom.

www.padeckbuilder.com 21

Roof Designs & Enclosures

Ceiling Designs & Materials Most customers prefer the open feel of a vaulted, or cathedral ceiling. Flat ceilings are available as well. Vinyl soffit is standard on our ceilings, with other options available, such as tongue-and-groove pine, as well as AZEK beadboard.

Screening Besides the obvious advantage of keeping bugs out, screening also provides limited protection from wind and rain. It also allows for more privacy if you have a small backyard with close neighbors. We offer both permanent screening systems as well as removable screen panels. Remember that screening can usually be installed later. If bugs aren’t a problem for you, you may prefer the more open feel and visibility of no screening.

Columns A roof structure can be supported with something as simple as a 4x4 post integrated into the railing. However, there are numerous upgrades available, such as decorative vinyl columns and stone columns, that can add aesthetic appeal.

Do you build with exclusively low-maintenance materials? Most of our projects are built with low-maintenance materials, but we also build wood decks, including pressure-treated and exotic hardwoods, if a customer prefers wood.

Who usually the gets the permit?Stump’s handles all building and zoning permits. We ask that the customer provide a plot plan of their property so that we can include it with the permit applications. We do not handle Home Owners’ Association approval, although we’ll be glad to provide drawings and renderings for the HOA upon request.

What can I expect at a sales call?At the sales call, your salesman will meet you, discuss the design of your deck, and show you the materials that we work with, so that he has the information that he needs to give you a detailed proposal and renderings. It’s also a time for you to ask us any questions that you’d like concerning our company and our construction practices.

How long does a typical project last?Smaller projects generally take less than a week, while larger projects can take up to two to three weeks. During this time we keep the disruption to a minimum by sending out prompt and courteous work crews, with no smoking, foul language, or trash in your yard.

How far ahead should I call if I want to build a deck by the springtime? If you want to have a project scheduled for spring, summer, or fall, we recommend that you contact us three or four months in advance, so that you have enough time to meet with a salesman, review a proposal, and accept the proposal. During the winter months, two to three months is generally all that you need.

What does a typical project cost? Many of our basic low-maintenance decks cost between $10,000-$15,000. However because sizes, options, and materials can vary greatly from project to project, the cost of a project can reach $40,000 and beyond. A roof and deck project combined can cost between $20,000 to $45,000 and above.

Why should I consider Stump’s for my backyard project? To answer this question, we encourage customers to look at our online reviews with Angie’s List and Houzz. We realize that to rise above the crowd in the construction industry not only requires excellent craftsmanship, but also excellent customer service. This should take place not only during construction, but with every step of the relationship with Stump’s.
