BENARTY HERITAGE PRESERVATION GROUP
“The Present Preserving the Past for the Future”
DAVID H. BLANE MILITARY RESEARCHER I became a member of BHPG in October 2012.After a career in the military and local government I retired and decided to research my family's history. I enjoyed doing this research and a natural progression for me was to undertake military research for the Group. The intention is to produce a record in book form of those people in the community who answered the call of duty to King and country. The aim is to honour and remember the ultimate sacrifice made by many of them and hope this book may be a basis for learning future generations of their forefathers courage and to emphasise the futility and waste of human life by engaging in war. I would also like to acknowledge assistance given to me by Dr. Derek Patrick, Claire Waterson (my Granddaughter), membersof BHPG and Benarty Citizen of the Year 2014, Arthur Nevay, Dunfermline & Benarty Libraries.

RESEARCH NOTES AND DATA SOURCES
Early in the twentieth century many new pits were being sunk in the Fife coalfield. This attracted men from all over Scotland and many parts of England. These “migrant” workers, with no home of their own until allocation of such, boarded or lodged with local families . At the outbreak of WW1 on 4th August 1914 many of these men returned to their own homes to enlist in the local “County Regiment”, this also included men with families and homes who had came to the area in previous years. Subsequently, many men from the Benarty area may have returned to where they grew up to join the forces. Therefore records may not show all details of “residence”. During research great difficulty was experienced due to the literacy standard of the period. This resulted in many names, both of individuals and places being mispelled. However dedication and application overcame these drawbacks. Many soldiers inthe Great War volunteered to serve in a particular Regiment or Corps but when they paid the ultimate price it was found they were not in that Regiment or Corps. During the war years one hundred and fifty nine major battles were fought with thousands of casualties on all sides. This resulted in various units losing many soldiers and not enough survivors to form a unit, thus they were sent to other Regiments or Corps, dependant on their training or civilian occupation, to make up numbers to full strength fighting Regiments. Many miners from the Benarty area were channeled to Corps such as the Royal Engineers or formed Pioneer Battalions for the purpose of digging tunnels, trenches and gun emplacements and their civilian skills and experience were used to great effect. During this war over five thousand miners from Scotland volunteered to serve their country. However in 1916 the government deemed miners as a “reserved occupation” due to the fact that coal was required for powering the war effort especially for Royal Navy, merchant ships and factories. This was to ensure vital supplies essential to the war effort were maintained on a regular basis. Subsequently a great many men from the mining industry were unable to join the services.
I have carried out research and endeavoured to be as accurate as humanly possible, however please be mindful of the facts that sixty per cent of WW1 records held in London were destroyed by bombing during WW2, and on the Thiepval (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belguim there are fifty four thousand names of soldierswhose bodies were never recovered.
The object of the book is to highlight the horrors of war and to maintaina record for future generations who we hope will never allow such attrocities or waste of human life to occur again.
BENARTY WAR MEMORIAL During my research of West Fife newspapers I discovered that there had been four meetings held in 1919 to discuss a War Memorial. The meetings were chaired by Councillor Garry held in the Picturedrome, Crosshill. The fourth meeting decided that the community preferred to have a public utility, rather than a memorial to the war and this was to be in the form of a bowling green, with the provision of a memorial plaque. Years later two bowling greens were established at Lochore and Glencraig. However no plaque was established at either. On Wednesday, March 26, 1924 a Unique War Memorial, to commemorate men from the Mary Pit who died in WW1, in the form of a huge white marble tablet, was unveiled in Lochore Workmen's Institute, placed on the interior east wall of the reading room. This was the old Workmen's Institute NOT the present one though the Memorial Tablet was moved to the present institute after it was built. Benarty Community Council decided to erect a
memorial in . At my first Remembrance Day Service at this memorial I was amazed that there were no names inscribed on it, in honour of the fallen from Benarty, who sacrificed their lives in WW1. Since joining Benarty Heritage Preservation Group as their Military Researcher, in 2014 I started to compile a list of Benarty Fallen for both WW1 and WW2 for inscribing on the memorial. I can appreciate the feeling of the community after WW1 as regards a memorial, due to the family hardship caused by the loss of loved ones, the bread winners for their families. However, I felt that in this Centenery Year of WW1 a very fitting tribute should be paid to the fallen of both wars by having their names inscribed on the Benarty memorial.
I would like to thank the Benarty Community and others for their help with supplying photographs of relatives, family letters and personal data in response to my appeals on the internet and local newspapers.
