The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday
May 31, 2020
Welcome to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church
The Tree of Life is Growing Here
We are called to offer sanctuary in the city, to grow in God’s love,
to seek the renewal of the world
We are in the first season of all-virtual worship. We are glad you are on this journey with us. We will be working each week to improve the quality of our online liturgy. If we experience technical difficulties during the service, we will pause the livestream until the issue is resolved. You are the congregation; there is no worship without you! As we gather for worship together in our different locations, we are making different choices of how to participate. Some are dressing as they would for church, standing, sitting, and kneeling as they would in church, and singing with enthusiasm. Others are gathering on the couch, in pajamas, and participating in silence. Please know that, just as you are welcome to “come as you are” in the physical church, so we hope you will participate here “as you will.”
Children are particularly invited to “make a joyful noise!” and to participate fully and actively in worship, as they can help us all learn to be creative in this new way of being together. You may want to experiment with these and other ideas. Some children may prefer to hear the Godly Play story they would have heard in physical church; please check www.standrewdenver.org (Parish Resources/Households with Children) to find information on how to connect to our virtual Godly Play recording. Older children and youth are invited to notice different preaching styles and/or to reflect on how the parts of the service work together (or don’t) and to connect the week’s message to The Way of Love.
A note about sung liturgical texts: Much music of the Anglican tradition is set to words from earlier versions of the Book of Common Prayer. Many settings are from the 1662 Prayer Book of the Church of England. The American Prayer Book of 1979 contains “traditional” and “contemporary” words for many services, called Rite I and Rite II . At St. Andrew’s we reflect the diversity and breadth of our liturgical tradition by not restricting ourselves to settings using the Rite II language we employ for corporate worship on Sundays. In an effort to encourage full participation in the prayers, however, we have chosen on occasion to present the “contemporary” versions of the texts, rather than printing the exact words the choir is singing. Occasionally a text is so altered in its revisions as to be almost unrecognizable; in this case the sung version of the text is printed.

The Opening Hymn 225

The People sit The Psalm: 104:25-32. 35 25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures. 26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, *
creatures both small and great. 28 All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season. 29 You give it to them; they gather it; *
you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. 30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; *
you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. 31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth. 32 May the glory of the Lord endure forever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works. 35 May these words of mine please him; * I will rejoice in the Lord.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:*
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Here ends the Reading The People stand The First Canticle: Te Deum laudamus setting: David Clark Isele (1946-2016) You are God: we praise you;
You are the Lord: we acclaim you; You are the eternal Father:
All creation worships you. To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,
Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you.
The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.
Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you; Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.
You, Christ, are the king of glory, eternal Son of the Father.
When you became man to set us free you did not disdain the Virgin’s womb.
You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
You are seated at God’s right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge. Come then, Lord, sustain your people,
bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting.
Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance. Govern and uphold them now and always.
6
Day by day we bless you,
we praise your Name for ever. Today, Lord, keep us from all sin.
Have mercy on us; Lord have mercy. Lord, show us your love and mercy
for we put our trust. In you, Lord, is our hope, may we never be confounded. Amen. The People sit The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 No one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-- Jews or Greeks, slaves or free-- and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Here ends the Reading The People stand The Second Canticle: Jubilate Psalm 100
setting: Charles Stanford (1852-1924) from the Morning Service in C
O be joyful in the Lord all ye lands; * serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song.
Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; * we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; * be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name.
For the Lord is gracious; his mercy is everlasting; * and his truth endureth from generation to generation.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Third Lesson John 7:37-39 On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Here ends the Reading The People sit The Sermon The Apostles’ Creed Officiant and People together, all standing I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. The People kneel or bow their heads The Prayers setting: Herbert Sumsion Officiant The Lord be with you. All And also with you. Officiant Let us pray. Cantor O Lord, save your people; Choir And bless your inheritance. Cantor Give peace in our time, O Lord; Choir Because there is none other that fights for us than you, O God. Cantor Create in us clean hearts, O God; Choir And sustain us with your Holy Spirit. The Collect of the Day Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A Collect for Sundays O God, you make us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of your Son our Lord: Give us this day such blessing through our worship of you, that the week to come may be spent in your favor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Collect for Guidance Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Collect for Mission Almighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. The People sit The Anthem: Come Down, O Love Divine William Harris (1883-1976) Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardor glowing; O Comforter draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever in my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing: True lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o’er its own short-comings weeps with loathing.

And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. Amen. Bianco de Siena (d. 1434)
trans. R. F. Littledale The People stand The Intercessions The General Thanksgiving Officiant and People Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. We are Still the Church
We are learning how to come together as a non-proximate community of prayer, worship, fellowship, and service to the world. Each day brings new responses to an unfolding situation. Thank you to our parish leaders, vestry, staff, and clergy, who have worked faithfully and tirelessly for many weeks. Thank you to those of you who have offered to help as we learn new ways of being together, to those of you who have responded to our ongoing efforts to be church in an unexpected way.
