The Song of Praise The Hymnal 1982, S 236 Canticle 13 John Rutter

The Collect of the Day Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lessons The people sit. The First Lesson Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gath-ered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one an

other, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' "

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 104:25, 31-35 25 O LORD, how manifold are your | works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your | creatures.

31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are cre- | ated; * and so you renew the face of the | earth.

32 May the glory of the LORD endure for | ever; * may the LORD rejoice in all his | works. 33 He looks at the earth and it | trembles; * he touches the mountains and they | smoke.

34 I will sing to the LORD as long as I | live; * I will praise my God while I have my | being. 35 May these words of mine | please him; * I will rejoice in the | LORD.

The Epistle Deb Papps

Sequence Hymn The Hymnal 1982, #230 A mighty sound from heaven Song of the Holy Spirit

The Gospel John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But, now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, `Where are you going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advan-tage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judg-ment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteous-ness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you." Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Prayers of the People Good People of God, I bid your prayers for Christ’s holy Catholic Church. May it be a beacon of peace, unity and understanding in an often conflicted, divided and confusing world. We are the Body of Christ on earth, may we witness to your love.

I bid your prayers for all peoples throughout the world. May we find a way to bring an end to the conflicts that surround us, especially in the Middle East, that all may be safe wherever they may be. We are the Body of Christ in the world, may we make peace. I bid your prayers for all in need of wholeness, especially those on our parish prayer list, and those whom we name, either silently or aloud. The People add their intentions and intercessions.

We are the Body of Christ to a broken world, may we bring Christ’s healing love. I bid your prayers for all those saints who have gone before, especially those we remember on this Memorial Day weekend. May we strive for the fullness of your presence when our earthly time is done. We are the Body of Christ in this time, as we await our time in God’s kingdom. I bid your prayers of thanksgiving for this parish of faith, especially for our ministry to the Nathaniel Bowditch School. May we be guided in our life at Grace Church, learn how to bring others to Christ, seek forgive-ness, and strive for unity and concord. The people add their thanksgivings and hopes.

We are the Body of Christ to one another, may we seek and serve Christ in our neighbors. The Peace

Celtic Service

This afternoon at Celtic Meditations, we will consider the sending of the Spirit on Pentecost and how she continues to inspire us in our work of justice and peace. During this sacred time, poetry, prayers and music from the Celtic tra-dition are offered to assist us as we move ever more deeply to God. The reflection today will be shared by Joanne Moar. Please join us today at 5:00 pm.

Visitor Information

Welcome to those of you here for the first time. The Episcopal Church offers all the sacraments to anyone who desires them. Please feel free to come to the communion rail to receive the bread and wine, or to receive a blessing. All are welcome to the rail, as all are welcome to reverently re-ceive the heavenly food of God.

Please feel free to join in the singing. Hymnals are located in the pew and the numbers are listed in the leaflet. Prayer books are also to be found in the rack in front of you.

We are a self-supporting congregation, so when we pass the plate, please be generous.

When coming to the rail for communion, please kneel or stand to the left of the person in line directly in front of you until the rail is full. You may receive both the wafer and wine, or may ask for a blessing. Please let the priest know if you need gluten free.

The priest will be available after the service to answer any questions you might have.

We ask that you sign the guestbook at the entrance of the church. If you want more information, our web address is www.gracechurchsalem.org. Our weekly newsletter called Grace Notes can also be found there. If you wish to receive the newsletter, simply go to the website, open Grace Notes and subscribe.

We hope you find the service meaning-ful and the community’s hospitality in-viting. Thank you for praying with us today.

Vestry Meeting Report for May

After receiving reports from the Rector and the Partnership, the Vestry discussed some property issues pertaining to landscaping, especially the overgrowth around the building, plans for the Quinlan Memorial Garden and the condition of our gutters. The Finance Committee requested a change in banks so that all our accounts are in one place which was ap-proved. There was also a recommendation that we remember to keep our pledge payments current during the summer months. Lastly, a fundraising events meeting was scheduled for Saturday May 30 from 9:30 to 11:00 am.

While You Are Away

Memorial Day weekend is the start of summer travel. Over the next three to four months, many of us will be traveling and out of town. Here are a few suggestions for staying connected to your church. • Find an Episcopal Church in the town you are visiting and go attend.

Make sure you bring back a leaflet so we can see the wonderful things other parishes are doing!

• Keep us in your prayers. • Keep you pledge payments current, or better yet, prepay them in June

for the summer months. • If you return on Sunday afternoon, don't forget you can come to

church every Sunday at 5:00 pm. Celtic Meditations is a great way to prepare as you transition from vacation mode to work mode.

Don't forget, if you are in Salem on Sunday morning, we will have break-fast each week at 9:30 am, (beginning July 5), Holy Communion with the Garden Project for the Church School at 10:30 am, Celtic Meditations at 5:00 pm and a picnic at 6:00 pm (beginning June 28). So enjoy this wonderful gift from God while you stay connected with the holy.
