Matthew 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life,

    andfew there be thatfindit.

Notice how the prior two scriptures that have words that relate a similar theme, compareconcealin Proverbs25 with strait and narrowin Matthew 7. Compare the searchinProverbs 25 with the findin Matthew 7. The two in essence are speaking of the same

thing. There is a theme that weaves through the bible that hidden deeper things of Godare found in His word. A theme of the need tosearch, seek and findthe way that leads

to eternal life. In our next scripture Jesus expounds.

Matthew 6:25-33 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shalleat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life

more than meat, and the body than raiment?26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into

barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow;they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like oneof these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow iscast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or,Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweththat ye have need of all these things.

33But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these thingsshall be added unto you.

Proverbs 1:5-6 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of

understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark

    sayings.

To understand a proverb, and the interpretation, the words of the wise, and their darksayings. This is what I am endeavoring to do in studying the bible. Lets discover the

definitions and some examples of a proverb, parable, allegory, shadow and similitudes.

Proverb - a short saying expressing an obvious truth. A proverb often uses comparisonof opposites. Here are a few examples of a proverb.

Proverbs12:10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of

    the wicked are cruel.

Proverbs 14:14 The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good manshall be satisfied from himself.

Proverbs 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are

    the ways of death.

Parable - a short story teaching a moral lesson or depicting a truth. Jesus spoke primarilyin parables.

I like to say that parables & proverbs are the cud spiritual people chew on, because

within them is spiritual wisdom found. They are things we should meditate upon. Theyshow us how God thinks. Here are a few examples of a parable. This is Jesus speaking.

Matthew13: 44-46 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hidin a field; the

which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that hehath, and buyeth that field.

45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and

    bought it.

Interestingly Jesus spoke to the crowds only in parables.

Matthew 13:9-17 & 34-35 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

11 He answered and said unto them,Because it is given unto you to know the mysteriesof the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: butwhosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing theyhear not, neither do they understand.

14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias (Isaiah), which saith, By hearing yeshall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and theireyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their

ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should healthem.

16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see

those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye

hear, and have not heard them.

34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parablespake he not unto them:

35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open mymouth in parables; (a quote from Psalms 78:2 see below)I will utter things, which have

been kept secretfrom the foundation of the world.

Jesus uttered secret things that many prophets and righteous men desired to see inparable, but the people as a whole could not understand because of the hardness of their

hearts, and their eyes they have closed. The mystery of the kingdom of heaven was notgiven to them.

In Matthew 13:15 Jesus quotes from Isaiah the sixth chapter where Isaiah has themagnificent vision of the LORDS heavenly procession filling the Temple and Isaiah istold to deliver a message to the people, the message was about why the people of Israel

missed her Messiah. They had, through their man made traditions blinded themselves tothe plan of Gods salvation. They were expecting a king to deliver them from Romes

yoke of bondage, but the LORD ushered in a kingdom in which they could be deliveredfrom the yoke of sin that the Law could not cure, but they couldnt see it.

Isaiah 6:1-10 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne,

high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face,

and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the

whole earth is full of his glory.4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was

filled with smoke.5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I

dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, theLORD of hosts.

6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he hadtaken with the tongs from off the altar:

7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thineiniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?Then said I, Here am I; send me.

9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see yeindeed, but perceive not.

10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lestthey see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and

    convert, and be healed.

Isaiah in the twenty-ninth chapter continues to explain their blind condition.

Isaiah 29:11-12And the vision of allis become unto you as the words of a book that issealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he

saith,I cannot; for it is sealed:

12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee:

and he saith,I am not learned.

The sealed things are the dark sayings of the wise. See the connection? Our next scripture is a prophecy that Christ would come speaking in parables.

Psalms 78:2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

Jesus told the Jewish religious leaders of His time.

John 5:39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are

    they which testify of me.

Yet the scriptures were sealed and the people had no one who could properly give aninterpretation of the times according to scripture. This staggers the mind and it should

make everyone of us fearful that we might in the same way miss God.

Jesus said to the religious leaders of His time.

Luke 12:56 Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; buthow isit that ye do not discern this time?

Proverbs 26:9 As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the

    mouth of fools.

The parables that the religious leaders heard of Jesus did not benefit them, they heard butcould not understand. But the common people who had a heart for God understood.

Isaiah 50:4 The LORD GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should

know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning bymorning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

He wakeneth mine ear. Its interesting that the people who heard were not the elite or

the educated, but the message resonated with the downtrodden. The bible says the religious elite considered the apostles John and Peter unlearned,

ignorant men as seen in the next scripture.

Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness ofPeter and John, and perceived that theywere unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them,

that they had been with Jesus.

Many in Jesus day missed what he was about and we can see it wasnt the nobles or thelearned that understood. The apostle Paul sheds more light in our next scripture.

1 Corinthians 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after

the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

Not many worldly wise, mighty or noble men called to learn the dark saying of the wise. Why? They are to busy being wise, mighty and noble after the flesh. The things of God

    are foolishness to some people.

Thus far weve looked at meaning of the words parable and proverb, now lets look atanother place where we might find the dark sayings of the wise.

Allegory - a story in which people, things, events have symbolic meanings. Heres anexample.

Galatians 4:22-31 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewomanwas by promise.

24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from themount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, andis in bondage with her children.

26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that

travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after theSpirit, even so it is now.

30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for theson of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

The apostle Paul uses the lives of the mothers of Abrahams two sons to illustrate thedifference between two covenants.

Shadow-The apostle Paul tells us Old Testament stories are a shadow of heavenly events.

Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice his son Isaac, this is a shadow of what Godwould allow to happen to His son. Isaac and Jesus share many parallels, sons of promise.

Hebrews 8:5 (The Old Testament High Priests) Whoserve unto the example andshadow

of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make thetabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to

    thee in the mount.

Paul is using shadow or example of the Old Testament High Priests to portray Jesus asthe eternal High Priest (Heb 3:1). Next he uses the Law of Moses as a shadow.

Hebrews 10:1Forthe law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very

image of the things, can never with those sacrifices, which they offered year by yearcontinually, make the comers thereunto perfect.

The law of Moses was a shadow of grace that would come by Jesus Christ. Many Old

Testament stories are shadows of New Testament concepts. A few I can think of off thetop of my head. Josephs coat of many colors is a type or shadow of the bride of Christ

will consist of primarily Gentile people, many colors denoting many nations. Naomismarriage to Boaz in the book of Ruth is also a type of a primarily Gentile bride.

Jezebel and Ahab are a shadow of the adulteress woman in Revelation 17 and herrelationship with the false prophet also known as the man of sin. The binding of Isaac isa type of the sacrifice of Christ. In this book I will use the term a type or shadowoften,

the two mean the same thing, it means a comparison or simile. A simile is an expressioncomparing one thing to another.

Similitude a likeness is how the dictionary defines it.

Hosea 12:10I (God) have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions,

and used similitude's, by the ministry of the prophets.

God has spoken by the prophets using similitude. A good example of a similitude is howthe apostle Paul use's Melchizedek 's priesthood as a similitude of Christ's priesthood.

Melchizedek was the priest/king of Salem who blesses Abraham after his defeat of unjustCanaanite kings. The key being Melchizedeks name means The Priest King of Salem,

which also translates as, The Priest King of Peace, who Christians believe is Jesus.

Hebrews 7:15-19 And it is yet far more evident: for that after thesimilitude ofMelchisedec there ariseth another priest,

16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of anendless life.

17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for everafter the order of Melchisedec.18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness

    and unprofitableness thereof.19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did;

    Get wisdom!

Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth

    understanding.

The search, seek, find theme again.

Proverbs 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are

not to be compared to it.

Proverbs 8:34-36 Blessed is the man that heareth me (wisdom), watching daily at mygates, waiting at the posts of my doors.

35 Forwhoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love

    death.

Whoso findeth me, Wisdom, findeth life. There is a search and find element toobtaining wisdom. Our next scripture says, to get and keep wisdom and understanding.

Proverbs 19:8He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding

    shallfindgood.

In the bible when you see a word that ends with eth or est it means to do a thingcontinually.

Proverbs 2:1-11 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments

    with thee;

    2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;4 If thouseekesther as silver, andsearchestfor her as for hid treasures;

5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, andfind the knowledge of God.6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walkuprightly.

8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good

    path.10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;

11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

    Look at the words I highlighted they almost tell a story 1.receive 2.hide 3.apply 4. criest5. liftest 6.seekest 7. seacrchest 8. giveth 9.cometh 10. layeth 11. keepeth 12. preserveth

    13. entereth. Its the story of salvation.

Ecclesiastes 7: 23-27 & 8:1 All this have I proved by wisdom:I said, I will be wise; but itwas far from me.

24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason

of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:26 And I find more bitter than death the woman (see lesson woman) , whose heart is

snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; butthe sinner shall be taken by her.

27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out theaccount:

28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousandhave I found;but a woman among all those have I not found.

29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have soughtout many inventions.

1 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man'swisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.

Who knoweth the interpretation of a thing?

Job 33: 23 If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to

    shew unto man his uprightness:

The motive of every interpreter should be to show unto man his uprightness. To teachmen how they ought to journey in the path of wisdom.

Notice the term one among a thousand is shared by the two previous scriptures. Job33:23 with Ecclesiastes 7:28. The writer of Ecclesiastes in chapter 7 verse 27 states, this

have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account: Counting

one by oneis this style of study. The apostle Paul calls it in 1 Corinthians 2:13comparing spiritual things with spiritual. In Isaiah 28:10 precept upon precept, lineupon line. So in this book we are counting one by oneorcomparing spiritual things

with spiritualbuilding precept upon precept. The writer of Ecclesiastes 7 goes on toask, who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? The interpreters job is to show man he

was created upright, and to show man how he has sought out many inventions to exalthimself above his fellow man.

Proverbs 3:32 For the froward (the stubborn) is abomination to the LORD: but his secret

    is with the righteous.

Psalms 25:14 The secretof the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew themhis covenant.

So we can see there are secret, concealed, hidden things in the word of God.

Jesus after his resurrection opened the apostles understanding of the scriptures.

Luke 24:44-45 And he (Jesus) said unto them, These are the words which I spake untoyou, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the

law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

To knoweth the interpretation of a thing requires a continual endeavor of searching out

the matter. Because as our knowledge of God becomes greater, our insight to spiritualthings increases, and our understanding of who the LORD is and what He requires of us

changes. Between wisdom seekers and God is a living relationship, it is progressive, andit requires vigilant observation and study in the things of God. It changes the way we

view things, the way we do things it is always evolving.

Proverbs 25:2It is the glory of God to conceala thing: but the honour of kings is tosearch out a matter.

We have looked at a few examples of proverbs, parables, allegories, shadows and

similitudes, where the wisdom of the dark sayings of the wise might be found.

Colossians 2:3 Christ in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Wonderful treasures are hid in the word of God. The Dark Sayings Of The Wise arerevealed and told only by Jesus Christ The Mystical YHWH. And the wise seek them out.
