Choosing a spill kit that includes standardised PPE presents many dangers to employees.

1. PPE won’t be the right size

• Suits that are too big can create a slip or trip hazard. • Gloves that are too big could allow liquid splashes to

come into contact with hands and dexterity could be lost when handling spill equipment.

• Suits & gloves that are too small will stretch during movement and could burst or tear leaving skin exposed to the spilled liquid

2. PPE won’t be compatible

• A spill kit that includes PPE gives the impression that it will work with any liquid

• No single fabric will resist every chemical

• PPE that isn’t compatible will degrade upon contact and expose skin to the spilled liquid

• Responders are likely to think they are protected by wearing PPE that’s been chosen by a spill kit supplier, subjecting them to more risks during spill clean up
