CHANGING TASTES CHANGE SHOPPING Department store closings have become almost common place. Moreover, we reported back in April that the real estate research firm Green Street Advisors determined that another 800 department stores need to close down nationwide to right-size the business. That may sound like really bad news for the shopping mall industry, but that’s not necessarily the case. The Wall Street Journal reports that some mall owners have been pushing out department stores as anchor tenants to replace them with more trendy businesses that do more to draw in consumers and drive mall sales. Those are restaurants and retailers such as fast-fashion chains and specialty stores. The story noted one case where the Florida Mall in Orlando tore down the former Nordstrom store and replaced it with a Dick’s sporting goods store and a crayon-based family attraction called the Crayola Experience. The same mall demolished the Saks Fifth Avenue as well to make way for a dining pavilion with 23 restaurants. It’s about shopping as entertainment—and even mall experiences that aren’t, strictly speaking, shopping at all. “The dependence of malls on department stores isn’t what it was 25 years ago,” Sandeep Mathrani, CEO of General Growth Properties, told the WSJ. His company had taken back space from 65 department stores since 2011, or about 15% of its anchors. Rival Simon Property Group has replaced 50 anchors, or about 11%. WALMART IN GLOBAL DEAL WITH PUBLICIS Publicis Groupe has created a new entity to give Walmart “unfettered access to all of Publicis Groupe’s agencies and resources.” The relationship is not exclusive, but it gives the Publicis agencies a special partnership with the retail giant to work on advertising and marketing efforts. The deal now in place initially applies to Walmart’s U.S. advertising and in-store creative for which Publicis Groupe will function as the primary Agency of Record. Walmart will also have access to resources outside of marketing, including technology to build customer relationships. Publicis Groupe says it will pull resources from the various agencies in its portfolio to ensure the right talent is working on each Walmart project. The relationship will be led by Arthur Sadoun, CEO of Publicis Communications. ADVERTISER NEWS Although there has been some recent evidence the furniture industry might be slowing down a bit, Havertys, with 122 stores in 16 Southern and Midwestern states, had a strong second fiscal quarter with same-store sales gains of 2.8%. Orders written were up 6% on both a same-store and total company basis, and the 4-day July 4th weekend was particularly strong with a 9% same-store increase…… Although still subject to FTC approval in the U.S., Delhaize says it expects to close the proposed merger with Ahold by the end of this month. With lots over overlap in the supermarket business in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, a significant amount of store closings or sales is expected. Delhaize owns Hannaford and Food Lion, while Ahold has Stop & Shop, two Giant divisions, and Peapod……In a different industry, more closings in the Northeast will come from KeyBank’s buyout of First Niagara. With the merger expected to close in October, 70 First Niagara and 36 KeyBank branches will be closed—in most cases there is a branch of both banks located within a mile of each other……The Pied Piper Prospect Satisfaction Index, which uses mystery shoppers to go to automotive dealers, has found that foreign brands take nine of the top ten spots in satisfying potential car buyers. The top five brands in the study were Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes, Toyota and BMW. Cadillac was the only domestic brand in the top ten, coming in at number nine.
