Dear Friends,Well, what a year it has been! So very many

of us have been shaken till we rattle, stirred tillwe no longer know in which direction we arefacing, swept out of our comfort zones by awave of change we are powerless to resist. Ata time like this, it is more important than everbefore to hold fast – as if to a life-raft – to theawareness that what we are faced with is not awave of destruction, but a wave of awakening;a wave that will – if we go with rather thanagainst it – deposit us on the pristine shores ofa new state of being, in which both we and theEarth will be able to express our true selvesmore fully and freely than has been possible formany a long year. To help you hold that visionamid all the confusion and discomfort that rapidchange brings with it, we feel it is important toremind you about something we first wroteabout a couple of years ago: an easy and verygrounded way to remember 'which way is up'!We can start simply by looking at our own

physical bodies: at our biology in general, andour immune system in particular. As we under-stand it (and putting it very simply, of course),the immune system is the part of the physicalbody that distinguishes between what is ‘self’and what is ‘other’. Cells which are determinedby the immune system to be ‘other’ are neu-tralised and eliminated from the body with theaid of white blood cells. So it could also be saidthat the immune system is the part of our physi-cal body that communicates to us what our self– our true self – is and is not, and what it wantsand does not want.In fact, this is what many spiritual teachers

confirm. On a subtle body level, they say thatthe heart chakra governs the immune system,and that the heart chakra also communicates tous the needs of our true self, or Higher Self, assome people call it. Well, now we know whythey make this connection. There really is abiological link between the immune system andour sense of self.Boosting the immune systemNow, if you’ve followed our logic so far, you’ll

see that, if we simply look at the immune sys-tem and what makes it strong, we’ll be able todiscover quite a lot about our true self and whatit wants us to do. And since it appears thatthere are many similarities in the way theimmune system works in different people, wecould start from the idea that there are alsomany similarities in the nature of our trueselves, although of course each one of us isutterly unique and individual.OK. So hands up anyone whose immune sys-

tem is boosted by negativity, closed-minded-ness, dejection, self-centredness, fear, anxiety,worry, cruelty, meanness, hatred, repressedemotion, lack of self love or lack of compassionfor others. No takers so far? We thought so.How, on the other hand, would kindness, good-

will, appreciation, gratitude, cheerfulness, lovefor yourself and others, trust, confidence and

inner peace work for you? And as a firm founda-tion for all those lovely feelings, how about lovingacceptance and release of all your emotions andmotives – not just the nice ones, but the onesyou’d really rather not see, too? Well, scientificevidence abounds these days that, on an emo-tional level, these are the kinds of things thatboost the immune system. Which means thatthese things are not just ‘what you need’. Theyare what you ARE. They are Self. They areYOU. What you NEED is what you ARE.Just let yourself dance in that for a moment,

inwardly. You ARE kindness, acceptance, good-will, appreciation, joy. And nothing can changethat because it’s engraved right into every cellof your body, in your immune system. Now it’sin that core awareness – not in a state of dejec-

tion, weariness and grim determination – thatwe’re supposed to embrace and address theproblems in our lives. Then we do not need tobe scared of the dark places within us – placesthat are always revealed through any healingprocess – and nothing will defeat us any longer.We need to develop the unshakable conviction

that there is a place in each of us where we arealready pure, innocent, unsullied, radiant, true;where we know and are known; where we loveand are loved. This is the divine child in us, thechild who, coming from a state of bliss andknowing, incarnates into an earthly body – inwhich it suddenly finds itself vulnerable to thewhole system of madness we call human life.Small wonder – in the face of such madness – ifthis divine child in human form is constrictedinto silence, bewildered into compromise,repressed into forgetfulness, or frightened intoconformity or blindness. This compression andconstriction of the inner, divine child is the originof all our emotional (and often physical) suffer-ing, and the underlying cause of the universal‘illness’ from which all of us seek healing.Be reborn as your true selfThrough all the changes that occur in our

lives, pleasant or less pleasant, the truth of thatdivine child’s existence deep within us is seek-ing to reveal itself. By being absolutely honestwith ourselves and open to that truth, trusting iteven when it is not comfortable or convenient,we can gradually liberate the divine child fromits prison; in fact, we become that child, and

step out freely into the glory of a new day.That is why our wish for you is that 2010 may

be the year when you finally know yourself,beyond any shadow of doubt, to be a part ofthe wave of awakening currently sweeping theworld; when you step with great courage andconfidence into the pure, radiant clothing that istruly your own. By opening yourself fully to thetruth that seeks to well up from your innermostdepths – and then acting on it – you will be let-ting the divine child in you fully incarnate; youwill reclaim your original innocence, and bereborn as your true self.The visual images and texts in this year’s

Cygnus Review Calendar are signposts that wehope will help you find your way back to yourtrue self, whenever you feel the need. In mid-August 1996 I wassitting on the sofa in myliving room. The finalpapers for my divorcehad come through inApril, a death knell tollingthe end of my life as Ihad known it. I had noone to be a mirror for

me, no one to share my life with, nothing left todefine me.My regular employment had fallen away, and

for several months I had been scrambling inter-nally to hold my tenuous-seeming existencetogether. I did not yet have a clearly conceiveddirection to move forward in, and I could barelymake financial ends meet.During the last few days I had been experi-

encing sporadic panic rising out of nowhere.From time to time I could feel my heart pound-ing and my breath becoming shallow, and thesense of panic was so acute and disorientingthat it terrified me. I tried to do everything Icould to avoid it, and I reacted as many of usmight in the face of rising terror: I kept myselfdistracted with pointless motion. I threw myselfinto the habitual humdrum of daily life, into roteactivities that gave me some sense of normali-ty, of security – of sanity. I took refuge in doingthe things I knew I was competent at: vacuum-ing, cleaning, cooking, paying bills and offeringmy one-to-one therapies.Though occasionally I would call a friend for a

chat, I felt deeply alone. I was constantly coldand no matter what I did I could not get physi-cally warm. I was desperately trying to cobbletogether something that resembled my previousexistence, a life that would give me somesense of connection, nourishment, and safety.I had tried all my age-old, stalwart remedies: I

took walks in nature, I meditated, chanted, andread calming words of wisdom from books byenlightened masters, but still the fear would notbe assuaged. I was on the run, being hunteddown, not by something outside me, but bysomething more immediate, more terrifying,something almost alien arising from within. Iwanted to jump out of my own body to getaway from it, but there was no escape. Likemost of us I had fear of fear, and no one hadgiven me a set of instructions marked, ‘What ToDo in The Face of Overwhelming Fear’.Turning towards fearMy mundane avoidance strategies and activi-

ties became increasingly ineffective at keepingthe fear at bay. Nothing was working, and I hadno idea what to do next. I caught myself vacu-uming the living room carpet for the second dayin a row, and I suddenly got it: I realised that Icould not run any more. I would have to facethis tiger and look it in the eyes.So I sat down and closed my eyes. Though

my heart was thudding in my ears, my face wasflushed hot and my breath was thin, throughsome force of will I turned towards the fear. I

welcomed it to ‘come and get me’, and I sat stilland waited. Everything seemed to swirl out ofcontrol. It felt like I was going to be pulled apartby the force of it. In my head I shouted, ‘Whatis this fear about? What am I really afraid of?’And I willed it to reveal itself.The swirling chaos began to subside. Time

seemed to slow down, then stand still.Eventually a reply arose within, ‘You’re afraidthat next month your ex-husband’s mainte-nance cheque is not going to come in. You’reafraid that the rug is going to be completelypulled out from under you again, and whatinsubstantial security you have left will beripped from you. You are terrified that if youdon’t do something now you will be unable topay your bills, cast out of your home, left aloneand destitute.’I opened my eyes, ‘Shit! Is this what I’m afraid

of?’

Some deep inner awareness knew that thiswas exactly what was going to happen – mymaintenance cheque was not going to arrive –and like a good friend the fear had been tryingto get my attention for days, trying to get me towake up and take action, but I was so afraid offacing the fear that I had been on the run sincethe first trace of it arose, and the more Iignored it the more insistent it became. Thefear was trying to warn me of what it perceivedas an impending disaster, one that did in facthappen when my cheques not only failed toarrive at the end of that month, but stoppedaltogether.The difficulty was that even the unconscious

possibility of being left without my meagrefinancial support was so daunting, so terrifyingthat my mind recoiled and closed down. It waslike a physical vice had clamped down on myability to access any positive action, answers,solutions or support. I was absolutely frozenand immobilised.The something inside me said, ‘Stop! I am not

letting this fear control me in this way!’And then I did a radical thing. I decided it was

time to face not just this one fear about acheque not coming in, but to face every fearthat had ever existed, every fear that wassecretly lurking inside my body, poised, ready

to do its dirty work.What’s the worst that could happen?Taking out a spiral-bound notebook and a

pen, at the top of the first page I wrote in bold,‘What’s The Worst That Could Happen?’ as if Iwas calling up to the surface every fear hidinginside me. I was determined that my fears weregoing to come up, come out and be fullyexposed. I summoned my courage and openedmy being wide, as if willing the full power ofthese lurking fears to come to the surface, andI genuinely asked myself, ‘What is the worstthat could happen?’ genuinely wanting to knowthe answer. Soon I found I was dialoguing withmyself.‘OK. So let’s say that the cheque doesn’t

arrive. Then what?’When I asked the question the panic started

to arise and swirl again, but I willed myself tostay wide open in the fear, to face the nakedtruth of the worst that would happen.The fear became even stronger and, as I sur-

rendered fully to it, the next answer arose,‘Well, if the cheque didn’t arrive it would mean Icouldn’t pay my bills, couldn’t afford to eat.’I felt sick at the thought of such a possibility.

Fear swamped me anew as once again Iasked, ‘OK. So if that happened, then whatwould happen? What’s the absolute worst thatwould come out of that?’ I realised that, evenwith the most tolerant and loving of friends,eventually I would wear out my welcome andwould have to leave.This time, I asked the question, ‘OK. So if that

happened, that your dearest friends turned youout, then what’s the worst that could happen?’A picture of me lying in the gutter in New YorkCity, my hometown, arose. I was destitute, inrags, with sores on my face and with not a soulto reach out to me. I felt like I was drowning ina sea of helplessness, of hopelessness. All myeducation, my degrees and certifications ren-dered useless, like so many bits of trash. I felt Iwas an abject failure, and there was no hope tobe found.A part of me knew that such a ludicrous thing

would never happen, and yet I was constantand determined that I would meet and face thedeepest, darkest fears, no matter how ridicu-lous or impossible they seemed. If these fearswere stored inside me, I was committed tomeeting them. They were not going to run myshow anymore.So I opened completely to the truth of how

appalling this picture made me feel. By thispoint I was lost in hopeless failure, feelingworthless, useless, and I was forced to openlyconfront my deepest fear head on: that I did notbelieve I had what it took to survive; I was soworthless, so incapable that I just did not havethe ability to take care of myself. I was beyondsalvation and filled with self-disgust. I hadreached rock bottom.So I asked again, ‘And if this were to happen,

that I would end up penniless, starving, dying in

a New York City gutter, then what’s the worstthat could happen?’Something already knew the answer, that

death would come for me, and I would perish.This was the core fear at the root of it all: thatbecause I didn’t have what it takes to survive, Iwould die.Again I asked, ‘So if you died, then what’s the

worst that could happen?’SurrenderSomething inside me opened to the possibility

of death. For a moment it felt as if I was beingpulled apart by some unseen force, panic keptcoming in waves, and I felt like I was drowningin a swirling mass of deconstruction, fighting formy life. Then eventually something quiet andstill beckoned me, and invited me to stop fight-ing the process, even though I couldn’t under-stand it. That same presence wordlessly invitedme to let go, to surrender completely to the dis-orienting confusion of it all.And something did let go. It began to feel

as if everything was dissolving into a vastfield of blackness. My physical formseemed to become insubstantial, non-exis-tent, to disappear into nothingness, intopure awareness.The universe as one consciousnessEverything became timeless, infinite.

After some time, the awareness startedtransmuting into particles of light – a vast,sparkling, scintillating field of light, a pres-ence that was everywhere, permeatingeverything. The field was endless, form-less, and all of life was arising in it, was beingembraced in it.I experienced the whole universe as one con-

sciousness, an all-inclusive potential waiting tomanifest and express itself as form, as all oflife. And I recognised that this pure potentialwas my own soul, my own Self. I realised thatthis that I am is permeating everything, and thatall of life is occurring in me, as me. There isnothing separate from me, nor am I separatefrom anything in life.Then came the realisation that in this potential

everything is available: all genius, all wisdom,all love, all creativity, all answers. In fact all oflife is born, sustained and dies away again inthis vast field of unborn potential. In this pres-ence all possibilities exist.All possibilities existI sat in wonder and laughed at the ludicrous

cosmic joke of it. In meeting my greatest fear –the fear of not having the ability to take care ofmyself, not being able to survive on my own,that I would die alone, destitute – I had falleninto my own soul. In a simple act of openinginto the most frightening of possibilities, myown death, I had found liberation.Through Journeywork I had already discov-

ered that when we fully surrender into the coreof our worst, most painful and debilitating emo-tions, we will be carried into the core of our ownbeing, into the enlightened, awakened pres-

ence of our essence.But like almost all of us, when my deepest,

most primal core fear was exposed, I froze. Ishut down. I ran. And it was only when Istopped, turned and offered myself completelyinto the fear, letting it ‘annihilate’ me, that I wasable to open freshly into the pure unboundedpresence that is my own soul.What had I been so afraid of – that I would

shed some old clothing?Calling forth the answersI was sitting there with my eyes shut, resting

in this pure radiant presence, in an ocean ofcertain knowing that this presence was patient-ly waiting to use me as part of the creativesolution to the impending crisis in my life. Irealised it was waiting for me to call forth theanswers that were there for the taking.

So I opened my eyes and reached for my spi-ral notebook again, knowing that those oldfears could no longer own me. I opened wideinto this field of pure potential. Even with myeyes wide open it was still palpable, still vast,redolently omnipresent. And I asked, ‘If this infi-nite presence could create the highest and bestin my life, what’s the best that could happenhere?’What’s the best that could happen?I wrote these words at the top of a new page,

and the answers started pouring onto thepaper. I felt like I was a scribe for grace, myonly task to keep asking, ‘What’s the best thatcould happen?’ letting this field of presence doall the rest. I could barely write fast enough asa new dialogue began.‘What is the best that could happen?’‘Well, I could get real and acknowledge that

the cheque will probably not come, and that Ineed to take clear, decisive action. So the firstthing I need to do is cut my bills in half, by get-ting a housemate who can take the secondbedroom and split the rent and utility bills.’‘OK, so let’s say that tomorrow I go to the

meditation centre and I find someone suitablewho would like to share the apartment with me;then what’s the best that could come out ofthat?’‘I would start getting real about my general

finances, and would start to budget properly.With my living expenses cut in half I could startgetting creative about how to bring in moreincome.’So if that happened, if I took proactive steps

to increase my income, what would that looklike? What’s the best that could happen?’The answers came flying out of the empti-

ness, as proactive ideas and the larger visionflooded my awareness. As I looked at the longlist of ideas I had written and felt the hugepower of what was possible, I compared it withmy list of old fears. The list of fears was muchshorter.I asked myself, ‘Does this vision of possibility

and action give me enough leverage to want todo a full Journey process to face and fully clearout my worst fear – of not having the ability tosurvive and take care of myself?’The answer was a resounding, ‘YES!’So that was what I did. I took a couple of

hours with a friend and underwent a fullJourney process, to clear out and finish withthe old fear-consciousness. And in doing that Iopened the door for all those possibilities tocome true. And come true they did!And surely, if humanity is to survive, a shift in

consciousness like this on a global scale, is justwhat we need. The infinite field of all possibili-ties is waiting for everyone.Time to live in conscious abundanceIt’s time to wake up and expose your own

worst core fear. It’s time to open into it, beyondit, into the vast potential of your own soul. It’stime to clear out your patterns of shutdown, fin-ish with your stories of limitation. It’s time toclear out the silent saboteurs that have beenrunning your life and begin opening into yourtrue potential.It’s time to become part of the co-creative dance

Sometimes the results have beeninstantaneous and seemed nothing short ofmiraculous, while other effects have been moregradual and subtle.Finding our demonsThe method is a simple five-step practice that

doesn’t require any knowledge of Buddhism orof any Tibetan spiritual practices. In the first stepwe find where in the body we hold our ‘demon’most strongly. This demon might be addiction,self-hatred, perfectionism, anger, jealousy, oranything that is dragging you down, drainingyour energy. To put it simply, our demons arewhat we fear. As Machig said, anything thatblocks complete inner freedom is a demon. Shealso spoke of gods and god-demons. Gods are

our hopes, what we are obsessed with, what welong for, our attachments. God-demons occurwhen a hope and a fear are closely attached toeach other; when we shift back and forthbetween hope and fear, this is a god-demon.The same approaches apply equally well to ourdemons, gods and god-demons.A new allyIn the second step we allow the energy that we

find in the body to take personified form as ademon right in front of us. In the third step wediscover what the demon needs by putting our-self in the demon’s place, becoming the demon.In the fourth step we imagine dissolving our ownbody into nectar of whatever it is that the demonneeds, and we let this flow to the demon. In thisway we nurture it, feeding it to complete satisfac-

tion. Having satisfied the demon, we find that theenergy that was tied up in the demon turns intoan ally. This ally offers us protection and supportand then dissolves into us.At the end of the fourth step, we dissolve into

emptiness, and in the fifth and final step, we sim-ply rest in the open awareness that comes fromdissolving into emptiness.Paradoxically, feeding our gods or demons to

complete satisfaction does not strengthen them;rather it allows the energy that has been lockedup in them to become accessible. In this wayhighly charged emotions that have been bottledup by inner conflict are released and become

something beneficial. When we try to fight againstor repress the disowned parts of ourselves that Icall demons, they actually gain power and devel-op resistance. In feeding our demons we are notonly rendering them harmless, we are also, byaddressing them instead of running away fromthem, nurturing the shadow parts of ourselves, sothat the energy caught in the struggle transformsinto a positive protective force.Giving our demons form by personifying them

brings inchoate energies or harmful habitual pat-terns into view, allowing them to be liberatedrather than leaving them as invisible destructiveforces. The alternative to feeding our demons is toengage in a conflict we can never win: our unfeddemons only become more and more powerfuland monstrous as we either openly battle them orremain ignorant of their undercover operations.Although the therapeutic technique of personify-

ing a fear or neurosis is not unfamiliar in Westernpsychology, the five-step practice of feeding yourdemons takes this approach deeper. Its additionalvalue lies in dissolving our own bodies and nurtur-ing rather than just personifying and interactingwith our inner enemies, and in the experience ofnondual meditative awareness that occurs in thefinal step of the process. At first Sabrina andI did not understandwhat was happen-ing. It was subtle,but the atmospherekept changing andwe were havingunexpected dreams.This began to hap-

tors was always interesting and gave us adifferent perspective on the evening’s pres-entation. We were often following two paralleltracks. One track was the observable pres-entation of the speaker. The other was theatmosphere, energies and mood created bythe associated spirits.The Aura of LineageI will not name names, but most famous

speakers and authors really are just ordinary,normal, average people. We would welcomethem into the rectory and give them a cup oftea or space to relax before the talks. Thenthey would go into the main church and theiraura would change as it became filled withthe energy of their spirits.There was one eastern teacher who repre-

sented a particular tradition, the leadership ofwhich had been handed down from father toson, generation to generation. As Sabrinasaid, he had inherited the family business.Backstage he was shy, interested in cars andnot very good at conversation. In front of theaudience, he began his talk by first sayingsome prayers. Immediately the atmospherechanged into something profoundly spiritualand moving. This was not due to his personalenergy, but due to the spirits of his lineage

over-lighting and then channelling throughhim and the space.Over the years, we experienced this many

times – ordinary people transforming intocharismatic spiritual teachers as their aurawas amplified and filled with the radiation oftheir spirits and angels. Sometimes, ofcourse, the teacher is also a person of greatintegrity and wisdom. The Dalai Lama is agood example of an old and very deep soul,but if you want to understand the power ofhis large gatherings and ceremonies, it is notright to see this spiritual power residing inhim as a person. It resides in his office ashead of his Tibetan Buddhist order.

Initiation and OrdinationThe women and men who become the

heads of traditions and lineages, almostwithout exception, go through initiation ritesin which they are ordained into their newrole. The clairvoyant, CW Leadbeater,described in great detail what happens toChristian priests when they are ordained.The ordaining bishop may not know it, wroteLeadbeater, but when the ordination is sanc-tified a tiny spirit (cherubim) is anchored intothe new priest’s energy body. This meansthat the priest now has a permanent connec-tion to the spirits and angels of the Christianlineage – and to its vast reservoir of healingand christed energy.Exactly the same happens, for example,

when a Reiki initiation takes place. A perma-nent connection is made between the healerand the great reservoir of Reiki healing ener-gy. By visualising or drawing the appropriatesymbol, a connection is activated by the rele-vant Reiki spirits and the healing energy cannow flow. This kind of connection is alsomade when monarchs are blessed andcrowned.Problems, Paradox and BlessingThis can lead to a couple of problems and

it is good to be aware of them. The first isthat people often think that the spiritualatmosphere belongs to the individual spiritualteacher or healer instead of to the spirits andangels. They may therefore idealise or evenidolise that person. This is understandable,but it is not real and it is not healthy for any-one’s development.

The second challenge can be even moredistressing. Once people have been ordainedor initiated they may still act as channels andtransmitters even if they themselves havecorrupt attitudes and behaviour. This canlead, for example, to the awful paradox ofcorrupt priests being able to bring through ablessing despite their abusive behaviour. Ihave met many spiritual leaders from all tra-ditions who are alcoholics or sexually abu-sive, but nevertheless carry the power andblessing of their lineage.You might think that their ordination should

be revoked – and it often is – but many ofthese priestly mavericks evade detection orhave too much power. And just as it takes ahuman being to perform the act of initiationor ordination, so it also takes a human beingto break the connection.All of this shows the power of lineages and

ordination. It also demonstrates the inno-cence of the spirit beings, who continue to dotheir work of healing, inspiration and blessingdespite the failings of their human channels.
