Student Council News By: Olivia Romero, Klara Sharp, and Sylvie Lotrich

Hello, Fowler Elementary. This year our student council Head Boy Clint Hailey, Head Girl Kaitlen Campbell, Vice President Chloe Briggs, Secretary Tay-lor Osborn, and Treasurer Olivia Romero have done an exceptional job. There are too many things to mention so today we only have a few for you.

First up, we had the Thanksgiving Carnival. On November 19, 2015, the student council hosted the Thanksgiving Carnival for Kindergarten-Sixth grade. There were a total of six booths [excluding the cake walk]. The games were Throw the Ball at the Turkey, Pin the Tail on the Turkey, Turkey Toss, Duck Pond, and Fishing for Turkeys. The student council thinks this was a hit. We hope you students think the same.

Next, was Movie Night on March 11, 2016. The movie was Hotel Transylvania which was a big hit. I can say for the whole school that it was funny and amazing.

Breaking News: the student council has just informed us that there is a storm of food headed this way. There is a jelloquake headed toward the salad bar and a hurricane of chili dogs headed toward the lunch menu. Hide your pizza!!! There may also be a twister of pot pies. This is Olivia, Sylvie, and Klara with your breaking lunch report.

Bears and Bike Drawing Boyd Rogers, Baylee Stowers, and Klara Sharp

At Fowler Elementary, each student has a Bear card with their name on it. At the end of each quarter, the teachers will turn in the Bear cards of students who have behaved proper-ly and completed all of their work for that quarter.

The Bears and Bike drawing is when someone in the school, such as a teacher, picks out a name from K-3 and a name from 4-6 to win a gift card to Loaf-N-Jug for the first three quar-ters. For the fourth quarter, the prize is a new bike. The best thing is that The First National Bank is sponsoring it ALL! The bikes are here, and Mr. Grasmick picked out the coolest colors. The school has been doing the Bears and Bike drawing for 13 years.

The whole thing will happen May 20th, 2016. Two people will ride home with a brand new bike at the end of the day. So be good and you will have a chance to win!

Homecoming Parade By: Gavin Unrein and A.J. Richardson

Every year we celebrate homecoming to congratulate our local sports teams and the Fowler community. The entire fowler ele-mentary either walks in the parade or lines up along the fence and

cheer.

This year’s elementary winners were:

1st place —Walk the Plank: Grace Hailey, Justin Totten, Madison Bates, and Nick Gates.

2nd place —Magic Carpet: Klara Sharp, Kristen Sharp, and Kiley Bouldin.

3rd place—Winnie the Pooh: Scott Mobbley, Brooklyn Corsentino, and Alyssa Maestas.

Dr. Seuss Day By: Derrien Montoya, Jestine Romero, Collin Ormsbee, A.J. Richardson

March 2nd was Read Across America Day also known as Dr. Seuss’ Day. The schedule for

that week was:

Feb. 29th Book: I Am Not Going to Get up Today Come to school with appropriate pajamas.

March 1st Book: My Many Colored Days Wear as many colors as you can. Guest Reader: Sharaiah

Unruh

March 2nd Book: If I Ran the Dog Show Bring your favorite stuffed pet.

March 3rd Book: The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins\And To Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street

Wear your favorite hat day. Guest reader: Mr. Grasmick

Our school has celebrated Dr. Seuss Day for 13 years. We do Dr. Seuss Day all week so we

have more time to do activities and read. We celebrate his birthday for the fun of reading. We have guest readers because an adult

who loves to read wants to read to us. Our school chose Dr. Seuss’ books because kids all over the world love to read his books.

The Great Pumpkin Patch

by Summer Osburn, Evan Hackler, and JoLynn Sauberan

On October 15th, the entire elementary went to the pumpkin patch in Olney

Springs. The owner of the pumpkin patch is Mr. Tomkey. We visited the pumpkin

patch just before the “Pumpkin Game” between Fowler and Ordway.

In the pumpkin patch, kids can pick out any

pumpkins they want. Most of the kids

carved their scary pumpkins for Halloween.

Elementary Idol By Kristen Sharp, Landyn Mason, and Baylee Stowers

Get ready Fowler Elementary for this year’s Elementary Idol. If you have a talent, then Elementary Idol is the place for you. Elementary Idol has been going on for 10 years! At the end of each year, students wow and amaze us with their talents. Some sing, some dance, some play a musical instrument, and some tell jokes. There are usually three judges, and they are usually teachers. If you were wondering if Mr. Gras-mick has ever judged before, the answer is no, but he loves the different talents. You can’t wait for Elemen-tary Idol? Then get ready to show off your talent at Elementary Idol!

Pennies for Patients By: Jestine Romero, Juanita Pack, and Morgan Kifer

The Pennies for

Patients program has

been going on for 20

years in this school.

We help raise money

for cancer patients. Our

school goal this year was $2,000. Each class tries to

get at least $150. The class with the most money gets a

pizza party at the end of the event and announced at the

beginning of the day. We collect money for at least 3

weeks to help raise money for the people with cancer in

the U.S. that includes children and adults. The school

likes to do this, and it makes the kids feel like they are

doing something to help people with cancer. By the

end of the 3 weeks, we raised $1,413.44!

Career Day By Kristen Sharp, Jacelyn Hagerman, and Jake Manchego

Career Day is an awesome day where you learn about other people’s jobs. You need to get ready for Career Day. In the past, we’ve met veterinarians, doc-tors, electricians, bankers, teachers, physical therapists, and nurses, as well as people who work in museums and people who make things out of leather. Mr. Grasmick’s favorite career was the Astronaut. He loved it. When Mr. Grasmick started being principal, there was a Ca-reer Day, but there were not a lot of people (that was in 1996). Mr. Grasmick was inspired to be a principal. He just thought he would try it. Did you know that Mr. Grasmick taught high school wood shop for ten years, and he also coached basketball. So maybe, just maybe, when you grow up you could come to the school and present your career.

ART DAY By Klara Sharp, Landyn Mason, and Michelle Whisnan

Art Day is a fun day for everyone in Fowler

Elementary. Art Day has been going on for three

years. The teachers will decide what art project

the kids will do. Mr. Grasmick said in his own

words that, “It is very fun for the kids. Not every

school gets to do this.” What the student council

has observed is that EVERYONE loves it!

Kool Kindergarten Activities By Ty Pieper, Jacelyn Hagerman, Boyd Rogers

Kindergarteners do lots of activities that no one else does. They do lots of cool activities. They do a time capsule. Inside, they put a piece of paper with their signature, favorite book, what they did at recess, class pic-tures, height, weight, and handprints. This has been going on for 8 years. They also do a lot of activities with books. For in-stance, they might read a book and do math and other subjects with it. They learn manipulatives for the 1st time. When they get to

play, it is educa-tional. Kindergar-ten is fun. We wish we could go back.

1st Grade Activities Baylee Stowers, Michael Whisnan, and

Olivia Romero

In the hall right next to the office, there lives a grade called 1st grade. In this grade, there lives many 6/7 year olds. Today we’re going to tell you about the special lives of these children.

In first grade, they get to watch caterpillars grow into MAG-NIFICENT butterflies. If you are wondering how long they have been doing the butterflies, they have done it for about 20 years! That is a long time. That is what happens in the AWESOME 1st grade classes.

2nd Grade Activities

By Taylor Osborne, Ty Pieper, and

Boyd Rogers

There are a lot of things going on in the classrooms of the second grade. Mr. Lundy and his class do the Pyramid of Success. On the Pyramid of Success, there are many different kinds of words that encourage the students to work harder and to work together. It’s a very important part of his classroom. He has been doing the Pyramid of Success for six successful years.

They also make a little paper person. They have the head of someone who made a difference in history. Then they write a biography report on him or her. Also, you may have heard the whole 2nd grade won the contest about “What Does Honor Mean to You.”

Mrs. Bell has been teaching for fifteen years. She also has been doing many fun things in her classroom like reading the Magic Tree House Books and other chap-ter books together. They also do many science and biography projects. They also do Famous People reports where each child chooses a famous person and does a report about them. She also does Opera-tion Christmas Child to help kids all around the world.

3rd Grade Activities Baylee Stowers and Michael Whisnan

The third grade is a magnificent and glorious time. We would like to tell you a little bit about them. So, sit down, get comfy, and get ready to read.

In third grade they do a banquet that is about pilgrims, and the banquet has been going on for 9 years! In the banquet, they put on a play and then they have a feast for the parents. Another activity they do is a chocolate flavor test… YUM! Third grade sounds SUPER fun.

Fourth Grade Activities

By Taylor Osborne, Ty Pieper, and Michael Whisnan

Mr. Sharp and Ms. Farmer have been doing many fun activities with the students of the fourth grade. For example, they put on the Ranita the Frog Princess play. Many of the students in Fowler Elemen-tary enjoy watching the play that the fourth graders do for the school. Also, they have an Arbor Day when the fourth graders get to learn all about trees. It is a very good learning experience for the kids.

The Fourth graders also do a diorama about an ecosystem. Last, Mr. Sharp and Ms. Farmer have fake money that the fourth graders get to save up. They have two auctions a year where the kids get to buy toys and all kinds of fun stuff.

As you can see, the fourth grade has some very fun activities.

Fifth Grade Activities By: Jake Manchego, Landyn Mason, Dominic Duensing, Juanita Pack, and Taylor Deas

Both fifth grade classes have had a busy year. One of our activities is to clean a two mile stretch of Highway 167. One class rides the bus to Mr. and Mrs. Rein’s house and walks back toward school as they pick up trash. The other class starts by the park and works their way toward Highway 167 and Road 2.

Another activity is the egg drop. The fifth graders build a “vehicle” for their egg, go to the West Assembly of God Church, and drop it from the second story

to the bottom. The egg that does not break wins the competition.

The students are currently making paper airplanes to fly down the hallway of Fowler Elementary. The one that goes the farthest wins.

In April, the fifth grade class travels to La Junta for the Colorado State University Extension Agents’ Ag Fest where we learn about

animals and agriculture.

Mr. Hagerman’s class participates in a Fear Factor. They go into the multi-purpose room, and Mr. Hagerman serves gross food combinations to the kids that enter the contest.

Mrs. Kincannon’s class is so kind as to read to the first graders on Mondays and Thursdays. They all take turns reading, and they all have fun doing it.

In Social Studies, we each choose a book to read that pertains to how the country was in the olden days. Once we read the book, we write book reports and make a display of something in our book.

The 5th graders write the school newspaper called The Cub’s Corner. We interview the people in-

volved in the activity we choose and put together the stories with pictures we take throughout the year.

6th Grade Activities By Austin Stealy, Kiley Bouldin, and Landyn Mason

The sixth graders have been doing some awe-some projects. We are going to tell you what they are and how to do them.

Greek Foil Pictures- Students research An-cient Greek Gods and Goddesses. They choose their favorite and create a portrait using tin foil and sharpie markers. The children thought it was going to be hard, but once they learned the techniques they knew it was easy and fun. The projects were displayed in hall for people to see.

Mummy Project- Students worked in groups to create life size mummies. They traced one member of the group and designed an ancient mummy. They covered their mummies with hieroglyphics that were related to the Egyptian Culture

These activities are fun to make! They are cool, and are really artistic.

Physical Education By Dominic Duensing, Jacelyn Hagerman, and Taylor Osborne

Mrs. Larson has been teaching P.E. for thirteen years. She puts on some very fun activities like the Jingle Bell Run. That is where the whole school runs, walks, or jogs on highway 167 for two miles. It is very fun, and it gets your blood pumping. Clint Hailey came in 1st place, Jeremiah DeVore placed 2nd, Hagan McCuistion and Ty Pieper tied for 3rd, and Jordan Bates came in 4th.

Mrs. Larson also plans Super Kids Day. The whole school goes and does fun activities like the barrel run, softball throw, obstacle course, soccer kick, and the three legged race and many more. In the afternoon, every-one plays water games at the high school football field.

Another of our activities in P.E. is the climbing wall. There are four climbing walls that you get to choose from.

In P.E., the students learn how to line dance, slow dance, and freestyle dance.

Everyone 8 years old and older gets to compete in the Elks Hoop Shoot and the Punt, Pass, and Kick. At the Elks Hoop Shoot, the 8-9 year old winners were Rylee Rodriquiz and Jed Ballard. The 10-11 year old winners were Aiden Smith and Taylor Osborne. The 12-13 year old winners were Jeremiah DeVore and Hailey Smith. Jed Ballard was then the 1st place winner at the Regional Hoop Shoot! He then competed at the Sectional compe-tition. Andrea Maestas placed 1st for the 8-9 year olds in the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition. Taylor Osborne placed 3rd for the 10-11 year olds.

The Most Fun Time to Sing! By: Evan Hackler, JoLynn Sauberan, and Mickayla Whisnan

Mrs. Grasmick, our Music teacher, started

to sing when she was five with her family which

inspired her to sing. She started to sing at church

committee and even to no music in the car. Just

her family singing. Mrs. Grasmick began teach-

ing in 1980 in the town of Holly, Colorado.

In music, we learn how to play keyboards,

we do art, sing, watch movies, and do plays. In

December, we had the Christmas play called

“Finding Christmas.” When we

do art, we either color or draw. In

keyboarding, we learn to play

songs and play notes. We sing all

kinds of songs sometimes from

the song book.

COOL COMPUTERS By Jacelyn Hagerman and Kristen Sharp

Do you like computers? We do! Get ready for a whole year of computer fun with Mrs. Smith. The most popular website the kids use is abcya.com. It is also very educational. Each year, the 5th and 6th graders get to compete in a Quiz Bowl competition against students from 9 different states. Are you dying to know Mrs. Smith’s favorite activity? Well, it’s Power Point, but that is not Mrs. Smith’s favorite website. That is Google. If you really want to have fun, Mrs. Smith’s computer lab is the place for you.

BAND

By Lance Brown, Jestine Romero, Gavin Unrein, Mickayla Whisnan

In fifth grade, your first year of band, you choose which instrument you want to learn to play. In sixth grade, you learn even more. In band practice, we learn how to play better. The band plays in two concerts and plays five songs each time. On Decem-ber 2nd, the first concert of the year, we played “Au Claire De La Lune,” “Jingle Bells,” “ Good King Wenceslas,” “ Donkey Round,” and “Dreydl, Dreydl.” Our next concert is on April 28th. We will play “Lightly Row,” “Cool Blues,” “Jesters Dance,” “Shoo Fly,” and “MaryAnn.”

Our band teacher, Mrs. Grasmick has been teaching for 36 years. She started band herself in fourth grade. She got inspired by her teacher Mr. Dean Lusk. The piano is her favorite instrument to play because you can play different kinds of music, but she likes all the other instru-ments as well.

Buckets and Boards By Jake Manchego and Klara Sharp

Each year the 4th—6th grad-ers enjoy a Music Outreach pro-gram at OJC in La Junta. This year we watched “Buckets and Boards,” a fun show full of mu-sic being played with a lot of weird sticks and buckets. The performers’ names were Mat-thew Levingston and Gareth Sever. The show was amazing, and the sound was beautiful. They both played very well. They made a lot of funny jokes, too. These two have toured the world and are currently one of the most requested headlining acts for Disney Cruise lines. Their upbeat personalities will leave you laughing.

A Healthy Body and Brain By: Sylvie Lotrich and Mickayla Whisnan

Hello Fowler Elementary! On April 20th,2016, a speaker came to our school. Our story is about what he talked about, who he is, and where he came from.

John Wristen from CSU Pueblo Collage came to our school to give a motivational speech. Mrs. Miell and Mrs. Unruh asked him if he would come here and give the speech. He talked about a man named Ahab and how “a voice” told him to go two miles west to this Oasis. It told him to pick up all of the rocks, and he would be happy then sad. When Ahab went to the Oasis, he picked up only a few of the rocks. The rocks turned into dia-monds. The whole point of this story was to tell us that it is better to obey the rules. He talked about Tigger and Eyore from Winnie the Pooh. He said Tigger has such a good personality, and Eyore has such a sad personality. He wants us to be like Tigger!

John Wristen has worked at CSU Pueblo for over 16 years. He has 154 student athletes on his team. They practice for up to 4 hours a day during football season. They go up against a lot of other teams here in Colorado. The team that he coaches has 5-6 inju-ries a year. The range of games you are granted is 11, but he tries to fit in 16 games. They have won 1 national championship game. He grew up in Denver and he grew up as a linebacker, but he talked to his coach and he start-ed to be a quarterback.

Coach Wristen started football when he was twelve. He is 54 years old so he is still young. He is married and has 3 children and 1 grandson. This was his first time coming to Fowler, and he liked coming here. He acts like Tigger!

WAY BEYOND MEASURE By Summer Osburn, JoLynn Sauberan, and Evan Hackler

Stand up! Stand out! Way Beyond Measure was to stop bullies in schools. Coach Fodu used skits and science to stop bullying. S.U.S.O means, Stand Up! Stand Out!

Coach Fodu showed us videos on how to stop bullying. Some of the demonstrations were silly string and water to represent hurtful words that bullies use. He poured water on a girl’s head, but when he tried to pour water on Mr. Grasmick’s head it wouldn’t work because we used good words. During the program, we tossed around beach balls and watched news videos. He taught us to think: Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it inspiring? Is it necessary? Is it kind?

Stand Up! Stand Out!

Health and Hygiene By: Taylor Deas, Summer Osburn, and Gavin Unrein

Mr. Hagerman has been teaching Health and Hygiene since 2003. Mrs. Diadoseo has been teaching it since 2005. Fowler Elemen-tary has been doing Health and Hygiene for-ever.

Mr. Hagerman started teaching the pro-gram to spend time with his daughter. He will be doing it next year. If Mr. Hagerman wasn’t here to teach Health and Hygiene, Mr. Sharp would teach it.

Mrs. Diadoseo said that the names of the classes this year were “What’s Hygiene” for the fourth grade, “Just Around the Corner” for the fifth grade, and “Growing Up” for the sixth grade. Mrs. Diadoseo started teaching health and hygiene so she could educate kids about what happens when you grow up and what to expect.

A.R. Field Trip By: Sylvie Lotrich, Juanita Pack, and Morgan Kifer

On the A.R. fieldtrip, the students are going to the Denver Aquarium on Monday, May 16th. The students might like the trip. The estimate of the number of students going is about 20 or 30 students.

The students earn the A.R. trip by reading a lot during the school year and having enough A.R. points at the end of the year. Also, they have to have an average of 85% or higher. The fieldtrips are al-ways fun and have a lot of activities.

Thank you Mrs.

Miell for putting this all to-

gether for the students who

are going! We are so lucky

to have a reward like this

going on in our school!

The newest kindergarten field-trip

will be on May 6th 2016. The kindergar-

teners will be going to see ‘‘The Jungle

Book.’’ The teachers said they are defi-

nitely going to want to go again. After-

wards, they will go to eat at the park.

We hope you have fun,

kindergartners!

First Grade By: Taylor Deas, Sylvie Lotrich, Trinity Montoya, and Derrien Montoya

On May 5th, the first grade class will be going to the Pueblo Zoo. They will also go to the Pueblo bowling alley.

Mrs. Montez said they will be going to the Pueblo Zoo to learn more about arthropods which is what they are learning about here at school. She says that she is positive that the kids will be well behaved and have a good time.

After the zoo, they will go to the Pueblo bowling alley to have some fun after a full day of learning. The first graders seem to be very excited for the day of their field trip to come. They will have lots of fun. We are sure of it!

SECOND GRADE By: Mickayla Whisnan, Lance Brown, Gavin

Unrein, and Juanita Pack

Every year the Second Grade goes to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for a field trip and has a lot of fun. They learn about the mammals that are at the zoo. Mr. Lundy and Mrs. Bell set up the trip for the kids, and they are also the 2nd grade teachers.

The 2nd graders went on their field trip on October 9, 2016. They have been going on this field trip for about 15 years. They go for the amazing tour. They get to learn some more about mammals. Some of the animals that they saw were two baby lion cubs and a baby orangutan. The kids’ favorite thing is to feed the giraffe.

Third Grade By Boyd Rogers and Ty Pieper

Mrs. Valliant’s and Mrs. Brocketts’s 3rd grade classes are going to the Cliff Dwellings and the Cave of the Winds for their field trip. The Cave of the Winds is a large cave system in Colorado. The Cliff Dwellings are old Anasa-zi ruins. Before they go on the trip, they do a unit on both Indians and stalag-mites and stal-actites. It is a very education-al field trip.

FOURTH GRADE By Taylor Deas, Trinity Montoya,

and Mickayla Whisnan

Every year the 4th graders put on a melodrama to raise money to go to an outdoor education program. This year the melodrama is called “How the West Was Worn or….Black Hat Optional.” The melodrama is going to be held on April 29th in the High School gymnasium. The matinee per-formance will be at 1:00p.m. and the evening performance at 7:00 p.m. The 4th graders have been selling tick-ets for the past month. If you don’t get to buy tickets from a fourth grad-er, you could buy them at the door as you walk in.

The fourth graders have been camping at Camp Jackson outside Rye, Colorado, for many years. At Camp Jackson, you do fun activities like wilderness survival, arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, and trail hik-ing. The teams take turns making and cleaning up the food. It is a long ride to Rye. The fourth grade will have a lot of fun there!!

The fourth grade went earlier in the year to Bent’s Fort. They learned about William Bent and saw the re-production of Bent’s fort. The teach-ers said they hope to go again for many years to come. The purpose of the trip was to learn about Colorado’s history. They saw many animals, the rebuilt fort, a blacksmith, and nature which was the highlight of their trip. We are happy the 4th grade had such a wonderful time.

FIFTH GRADE By: Kiley Bouldin, Michael Whisnan,

and Boyd Rogers

The 5th gradeers started their year

with making money by having a yard and

bake sale in September for their field trips.

They set up on Main Street on a Saturday

and brought something that they wanted

to sell. The community came to shop for

all sorts of cookies, cakes, bread, furni-

ture, and toys.

In October, the 5th Graders traveled

on the AmTrak train from La Junta to

Raton, New Mexico. The bus met us at

the train station and took us on to Mount

Capulin, an extinct volcano. We ate at

Carl’s Jr. in Walsenburg on the way home.

In March, the 5th graders got on a

bus at 5:15a.m. to drive to Monarch to

learn to ski. Afterwards, we stopped at

Pizza Madness in Canon City for dinner.

Sixth Grade By: Juanita Pack, Collin Ormsbee, Evan

Hackler, and Lance Brown

On May 11th, the 6th grade classes are going to a Rockies game in Denver. The reason they are going on this field trip is that this is their last field trip and they wanted it to be remem-bered by the kids in the 6th grade.

The Rockies game field trip is a nice day for the sixth grade to relax and watch a game. It is a very fun trip as long as they like baseball.

Have a fun time sixth grade and try to catch a foul ball.

Principal’s Writing Challenge By Austin Stealy and Kiley Bouldin

The Principal’s Writing Challenge is when kids have to write a story about a certain topic. Mr. Gras-mick is the person who chooses the topic of the story and gives it to each class. Then, Mr. Grasmick picks the best story from each class and a few honorable men-tions. The winners of each grade get to read their story at the monthly honors assembly and they receive a prize.

What Does Honor Mean to You? By Austin Stealy, Kristen Sharp, and Dominic Duensing

When you are asked the question, “What does Honor mean to you?” you need to answer it.

We wrote about what Honor means to each of us. Then our teacher picked the best ones and sub-mitted them for judging. A group of people from the Arkansas Valley such as veterans and business owners made up the judging committee this year. The com-mittee chose the winners. In 5th grade, there were 2 winners: Austin Stealy and Kristen Sharp. The whole Second Grade also won their division with their class video.

The winners traveled to Pueblo to the Center for American Values. We got to walk the river walk, see some of the military people, and read quotes from each of them. We also received a catered lunch by Rosarios. Then we each re-ceived an award, and we read our speech or essay.

Science Fair By: Austin Stealy and Kiley Bouldin

In January, K-12 do science projects for our Science Fair. Each student does their own project, and they find re-search on their project. The judges judge the kid’s memory of his/her project. If their project is one of the best projects, they get a prize. Everyone then gets the chance to go to the Arkansas Valley Fair and maybe win a bigger prize. Congrat-ulations to all of our winners!
