Society Chatelaine Announcement

The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. is accepting applications for the position of Society Chatelaine. The Society Chatelaine is the officer responsible for training, advising, and coordinating public outreach, new-comer acquisition, acclimation, and retention for the SCA. This officer is currently a deputy to the Society Sen-eschal. Duties include:

• Coordinating and monitoring the efforts of kingdom chatelaines/hospitallers • Developing and maintaining materials for recruitment, newcomer orientation and retention, and local

officer training. • Maintaining a knowledge base for SCA demos, as well as monitoring compliance with the SCA demo poli-

cy/guidelines document. • Working closely with other Society-level officers to create, implement, and monitor Society-wide mar-

keting efforts aimed at new member acquisition and member retention. • Performing other duties assigned by the Board or Society Seneschal as directed.

Successful candidates for this position must have demonstrated leadership skills, problem-solving expertise, and experience with project management. A basic understanding of membership marketing principles and chapter development is strongly suggested. Applicants should be able to travel to other Kingdoms as neces-sary and have easy access to phone, mail, and reliable email. An applicant must be a paid member of the So-ciety and must be able to meet quarterly reporting deadlines in a timely manner. This position presents the opportunity to help preserve the rich traditions of the Society and assure its future by assisting in recruiting and retaining newcomers.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help introduce people to this game and will have long term, positive impact on thousands of participants across the world. As the SCA is the largest historic recrea-tion organization in the world, with a membership of over 30,000 across the globe, the successful candidate will be assuming a role which not only offers the opportunity to grow the SCA, but to obtain significant pro-fessional experience, despite it being an unpaid position. The successful candidate will begin working with the outgoing Chatelaine in early 2022, in preparation for taking over the position in the summer of 2022.

Questions regarding the position may be directed to Anne Stevenson, Society Chatelaine, via email at [email protected]. Résumés, including SCA offices held and awards received, must be sent via email to [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] .

Musings on the History of the Barony of Naevehjem

Compiled by Baroness Amicia Sennet’ de Bruges, with contributions by Baron Rudolf Fekter, Baroness Katherine of

Angelsey (OP) and Baron James of the Lake (OP)

Our lands are bordered to the west by the majestic Sierra Nevada, the east by the Valley of Death, to the south, the

extensive Mojave Desert, and to the north by the Land of the Frost Dragon (aka-the territory of Eastern Kern and Inyo

Counties, California, USA). The name “Naevehjem” is Danish for Fist Home. The activities of the Barony are chronicled

in the “Fist Home Flyer.”

Legend has it the Shire of Naevehjem was established in November 1981 primarily through the efforts of Scannlach

Faolscatha (aka -Shadowwolf). She taught at the local high school and recruited students into the group to learn about

the history of medieval life, fighting techniques and warfare. Gwendolyn of Naevehjem, as a high school student, be-

came an active member of the Shire. She in turn brought her parents into the group – James of the Lake and Katherine

of Angelsey. Llewelyn Flinthaven, in high school during the later years of the Shire, was drawn into the group by Shad-

owwolf. He managed to snare his parents, also – Thomas Blackkeep and Marina Zanne.

There were many activities during the early years of the Shire. Weekly fighter practice also included bardic rehearsal

learning medieval ballads and instruments. The bards performed annually at Frost Dragon (Anniversary) and many

wars. Belly dancing, English country, and Italian Renaissance dances were taught by Francesco Schiavone. Of course,

armored combat, rapier and shinai were all vigorously practiced each week. During the early years, the populace had

enough fighters to support a mercenary war band known as the Bucalari with Shadowwolf as their leader.

The Barony of Naevehjem was founded 16 November 1991. Wulfhere Slaende Falk and Scannlach Faolscathe (OP)

served as the first Baron and Baroness until Wulfhere’s untimely death in October 1996. Wulfhare had a wicked sense

of humor and was a good contrast to Shadowwolf’s rather serious nature. When other areas of the Kingdom were

drenched with rain and events were postponed, it was believed he could summon good weather for gatherings in Nae-

vehjem which was always sunny. Hence, through time, he has become known as Saint Wulfhere.

Donald Cathchern was elevated to the Order of Chivalry in October 1991 as the Barony’s first and only knight (he has

since retired from the SCA). Baroness Scannlach (Shadowwolf, OP) continued to serve until November 1997, at which

time Thomas Blackkeep (OP) and Marina Zanne (OP) began their reign as the Second Baron and Baroness.

Under the watchful eye of Baron Thomas and Baroness Marina, the Barony continued to grow. Fighting, bardic and

dancing continued along with new interests – cooking, brewing, clothiers, kumihimo, needlers, and so much more.

Once or twice each year the populace gathers at Baldwin’s Keep for a casting party to pound sand. In other words,

casting bronze for Baronial Awards and pewter for site tokens, personal tokens, buttons, etc.

Thomas and Marina stepped down at the Baronial Anniversary in November 2009. THL Rudolf Fekter and THL Amicia

Sennet’ de Bruges stepped up as the Third Baron and Baroness of Naevehjem. Their tenure spanned nine years. Clas-

ses continued on a variety of subjects. Dancing waned a bit with the passing of Francesco Schiavone, but we still cele-

Page 5: The Crown Prints

Musings on the Barony of Naevehjem, continued

brated some anniversaries with a bit of dancing. Sewing of banners for the feast hall and painting silk banners for the

field continue to be popular projects. Calligraphy and Illumination classes have been taught periodically by Baroness

Katherine and continued by Lady Aesa. Many classes have been taught on food and brewing through the years. The

Bards of Naevehjem enjoyed a spirited revival during the early years of Rudolf and Amicia’s tenure.

The Baronage was passed from Rudolf and Amicia, November 2018, to Llewellyn Flinthaven and Eularia d’ Amboise,

the Fourth Baron and Baroness of Naevehjem. Since the untimely passing of Eularia in August 2019, Llewellyn has

continued to serve our Barony.

The Populace continues with weekly fighter practice for both armored and rapier combat, though the number of

fighters is much smaller. Demos are still provided periodically for schools, the County Fair, and even the Frost Dragon

has made an appearance in the annual Ridgecrest Christmas Parade.

Upon each Baronial Anniversary, the dreaded Frost Dragon descends from the northern borderlands to challenge the

good gentles of Naevehjem for rule of these lands held in trust to the Crown. Each year upon defeat, the Dragon re-

treats once again to guard the northern borders of our Kingdom.

The Barony is blessed with members of the Populace who also belong to the DeSteele Household, known for their

research and cooking of wonderful period feasts. For at least the past decade our Anniversary celebrations have end-

ed with one of their fabulous feasts; however, this was not always guaranteed. Katherine of Angelsey reminisced on

the first feast they attended when first involved with the Barony and the Society around 1992. As a Shire people

spoke of having potluck feasts. However, the first feast that James and Katherine attended was a disaster consisting

of frozen turkey legs, boiled whole turnips and canned pears. Rudolf and Amicia moved into the Barony in 1997. Their

first feast was at Frost Dragon in 1998. They thought it odd that the feast was a catered buffet by a non-SCA business.

The Barony as a whole felt they did not have enough people to prepare a feast and this was the best option. Within

two or three years, Liam of the Bloody Foreland and Belinda of Emeric arrived in the Barony. Catered feasts were just

unacceptable. They put Naevehjem on the path toward fabulous feasts!

Over the years, Naevehjem has had its growing pains. Rudolf and Amicia came from a rural part of the Kingdom of

Artemisia to rural Caid where communities range in population from a couple hundred to maybe 8,000 people. Belin-

da and Liam came from the Midrealm; also, an area of many small communities where it took great effort to draw

people together to spend time to make this dream of the SCA come alive. New people will join us and familiar faces

will leave us. Change will always be with us. It is our hope that the Populace of Naevehjem will reach for the new, ex-

plore and embrace the unknown and carry on!

By Lady Brig inghean Uateir

The first time I saw Naevehjem's dreaded Frost Dragon was in November of 2015. I was two months into my SCA experience, and had attended a handful of local practic-es. I had joined in September, having several friends al-ready involved, and the garb appealed to my theater nerd self. The archery was what hooked me, but I di-gress. The story of the "dreaded" frost dragon as told by Baron Rudolf Fekter was that every fall, the Frost Dragon would invade the lands of Naevehjem and attack the fighters of Caid. As Baron Llewellyn Flinthaven tells when he stepped upon the Baronial throne, he had sought out the dragon and came to a truce. The dragon would guard the lands of Naevehjem and bor-ders of Caid, visiting every November to test the mettle of the fighters in our great land. In either case, it is always a grand occasion, which is occasionally rushed by the disappearing sun.

My first year, 2015, was the first time I fought the drag-on. The dragon was manned by 6 fighters, a particularly tall gentle named Alonzo Fortuna manning the head and neck piece. Upon the neck lay a small cymbal, which, if struck, would kill the dragon. For context, if struck by any of the dragon limbs, it would count as a blow from a great weapon, and said limb would be immediately lost. The dragon also breathes frost/ice. (Completely harmless car-bon dioxide.) If hit by the breath of the dragon, it's in-stant death. Fighters are given a shield, a boffer sword, and goggles, and are generally wished good luck by the herald, who informs them of a two-minute time limit. I had watched the fighting all day, and had been to a few fighter practices, but had yet to armor up, so I was abso-lutely convinced I would get slaughtered by the dragon in a hurry. I was, of course, correct, and had lasted all of 30 seconds before being vanquished by the dreaded beast.

The next year, I had gotten my Award of Arms in the morning from TRMs Oz and Marisa, and I was determined to do better. Of course, I was killed right away again, but I took the time to sit and study how others approached the fight.

Some fighters went and attacked the limbs. Two hits to the limb would render it useless. One year, I watched Al-va Rowser go for the tail first, then the back legs, followed

by the front. I don't even remember if she defeated the dragon, but watching her take the approach of ignoring the head really stuck with me.

Flash forward to 2018. The Barony of Naevehjem had just wel-comed a new Baron and Baroness after 9 years. I had just stepped up as Seneschal, and was also running the event. This was the year I took on the dragon for a third time. It had been three years since the first time, and I was abso-

lutely determined to do better. I had done my homework, and I had even gotten into armor a couple times by this point, and I had watched what the other fighters had been doing. Eye protection on, sword in hand, and with noth-ing but a small buckler to protect me, I entered the drag-on pit. Upon hearing the "LAY ON!", I made my move. Hoping to catch the dragon off guard, I walked straight up to him, leapt, and extended as far as my short frame would allow. As I felt the claw strike my leg, I heard a *CRACK* and knew my aim was true. I may have lost a leg in that brief battle, but I had slayed the mighty Frost Dragon of Naevehjem. Joining a prestigious list of Dukes, Knights, Fighters...was little ol' me.

To this day, even during the long night, the Frost Dragon keeps a watchful eye on the Barony of Naevehjem, seek-ing shelter only in the oppressive heat of the summer, patiently waiting for the second weekend in November, so that it may test the fighters of Caid once more.

What a Difference a Year Makes: “Thirti dayes hath Novembir”

By Baron Beorn of the Northern Sea, OL Hello Caid! It is I, your friendly neighbor-hood Beorn! I’m here with you in these Realms Ethereal to begin a column about… Well, about The Year. You know, that thing that never seems to end, yet at the same time feels as if it races by at a breakneck pace? That concept we all try to prepare for, so much so that there is an industry based solely around digital and print media for organizers, project-management, 5-year plans, end-of-fiscal-year reports, wellness templates, and even journals and diaries? Yes. THAT thing. There are SO MANY QUESTIONS we can seek answers to about time in general, and how our current calendar1 works in particular! What are the origins of the calendar? Which came first: lunar or so-lar calendars? When were they first cre-ated? Why are there seven days in a week? Who named those days? Who named the months? How come we use the terms from this language or culture, but not that language or culture? Where did the very notion of time appear in the first place, and how do we know for cer-tain? But, first and specific to this month: why does so little happen in the month of November during the SCA’s period of study/pursuit/obsession? Before we start what I hope will be a monthly column, a quick note that I will do my best not to dwell too much on this past year or two. Remember when they said this would all be over in six weeks? Ah, to be young and naive again! While we certainly made some excellent strides in our SCA lives by more fully utilizing our digital space(s) and online time-savers (I wasn’t the ONLY person to notice how Zoom online courts were MUCH faster than in-person courts), many of us (yes, even you dear introverts) started getting ground down by the lack of human con-tact. Time seemed to slow down, cre-ating an aching feeling that the seconds ticked away like the drip-drip of water torture2 which in turn drove a good num-

ber of people near despair. We humans are social animals, so it stands to reason that other humans are sort of required to remain happy, hearty, and hale. And no, it’s not just you. It’s not just the pan-demic either. It also has to do with the season; this particular time of year (provided you are reading this in the Northern hemisphere). November is the last month of Autumn. We are descend-ing into Winter, and as the days get shorter, we start to get a little more needy, or irritable, or even irritably needy. Moving forward toward the ‘colder’3 months, the LAST thing many of us need is a good cry (or even an ugly one). And yet, here we are deep in the throes of the second calendar year of lock-down. Masks are still a thing, social distancing is still a thing, and, regretta-bly, COVID is still very much a thing. While we have plenty to do now (menus, tailgating, hanging lights and wrapping gifts, etc.), November, in period, was far less festive and more about preparation. Harvest was over and now it was making sure the bounty would last through the darkest time of the year. The name “November” itself is pretty straightfor-ward: from the Latin Mensis November and means ‘Ninth Month’. Since the Cal-endar of Romulus onward (let’s face it, whenever something happened a long time ago Romans said either a god or Romulus invented it), this penultimate, or next to last, month has been one of getting settled in, finishing up contracts or making amends. You know, just in case someone doesn’t make it through winter. Think about the festivals that begin this time of year: All Saints’ Day, Day of The Dead, Calan Gaeaf (think of that one as Welsh Samhain), the Saxons called it the ‘Blot Monath’ since this was when all animals not being kept through winter would be culled and their meat smoked or salted. The Germanic term for this time was the ‘Nebel Mond’ of The Month of Fog. Does that sound like a time to barrel head first into battle, or anything else for that matter?

In many Christian faiths, this began what we now call Advent, or “the arrival” where all believers await the ‘little fella in the manger’. And while not much may be happening in the Hebrew calendar, the Islamic calendar spends a lot of time remembering martyrs and birthdays; the most important being Mawlid, the birth of Muhammad (but the actual date of celebration depends heavily upon whether you are Sunni or Shia). It is rare to read about a major battle or earth altering event during this time as people were hunkering down. And sure, okay, Pope Lucius III did write the papal bull that would begin the medieval inqui-sitions, and yes, the Ottoman Army did defeat the combined Bulgar/Hungarian/Polish forces at the Battle of Varna in November (I would like to give a shout out to His Excellency Kyr Yaroslav the Persistent and his most prodigious knowledge about this conflict), but these are outliers and not the norm. So, in conclusion, for much of history, November began as remembrance and tying up loose ends, and ended with the very real wish “if I can just make it through the winter…” Gosh, I guess keeping current events out of this col-umn will be harder than I thought. Stay safe everyone, and next month we’ll continue our discussion of the calendar, and check in on festivals that we mostly celebrate in the SCA as ‘Yule’. ----------------------------------- 1 - Referring to the current Western cal-endar, so, 2021 C.E. The calendar of the Hebraic Faith marks this year as 5782, the calendar of the Islamic Faith sets the year at 1443, and on the Chinese calen-dar it is 4719, etc. 2 - Despite the name many of us might be familiar with, the slow water dripping torture was invented in Italy (by the Bo-lognese lawyer Hippolytus de Marsiliis [a lawyer? Imagine that!]) and not China. 3 - It is understood that, with the excep-tion of our more mountainous communi-ties, the people of California, Nevada and Hawai’i do not really ever deal with cold weather.

From the editor: The article entitled “Masters at Arms” in the October issue was an opinion piece.

To the populace of Caid, After speaking with several people regarding my article titled, “Master of Arms”, in last month's Crown Prints it has become appar-ent that I need to make a clarification. A fair criticism was made that I made a statement as if it were a fact when it was actually an opinion. The statement in question is that the Chivalry council stops considering a candidate once it becomes known that they are seeking a baldric instead of a belt. I am not a member of the Chivalry, and have never attended a Chivalry council meeting, there-fore I cannot make the statement as fact. It should have been written, "it seems that once it becomes known that a candidate is seeking a baldric instead of a belt then all consideration stops." This is a more correct statement of opinion of the perception by those who desire to follow the path of Master of Arms. In Service of the Dream, Thomas Chisholm Reeve of Starkhafn

The Herald’s Trumpet

Greetings, Heraldry Lovers! Lots to share this time, the Heralds' Office of the Society has been getting The Standards for Evalua-tion of Names and Armory, The Rules for Submissions aligned with the recent improvements in the governing documents of the Society, and more goodness. Here goes. Updates to reflect the change from step from period practice to step from core practice. Modified the definitions for "Period" and removed the limitation on the domain (geographic area) of the Society ("Period and domain of the Society") in accordance with the March 3, 2021 revision to the SCA Governing Documents. The word "European" has been deleted in most cases, and non-European artifacts, plants and animals known to humans before 1600 are being al-lowed, as a "step away from core practice" if they have not actually been in armory before 1600. In the Glossary of Terms section, changed "Gray Area" to "Grey Period" and added cross-references for "Gray Area", "Grey Ar-ea", and "Gray Period" to "Grey Period" - the terms are interchangeable. Added "Three rapiers in pall inverted tips crossed" as a reserved charge, exclusive to members of the Order of Defense. On the given name "Rhiannon": a popular name from Welsh mythology: The May LoAR 2008 Cover Letter then disallowed SCA-compatible names from registration as of the May 2009 Pelican decision meeting, including Rhiannon, that could not be other-wise be documented to period. This Cover Letter allowed that names previously ruled SCA-compatible could be registered if suitable documentation was provided. Most recently: Riannon was documented on the Letter of Intent as a literary name, and there is a pattern of Welsh literary names entering the Welsh naming pool [Drystan ap Ercwlff, 10/2020, A-Avacal]. As was noted by Alys Ogress in commentary, "Given that we have examples of normal humans using the names Arawn, Gwri, Gwythyr, Ma-bon, Gwyn, and Gwion, it makes no sense to hold the more famous (but no less legendary) Rhiannon to a higher standard. Our operating theory that normal humans were not named after fictional characters from Welsh mythology has been disrupted by data." We agree. Therefore, as of this Cover Letter, the given names Riannon (pre-16th and 16th century Welsh) and Rhiannon (16th century Welsh) may be registered as Welsh literary names. The following names and armory have been registered: * Alatiel de Beaumont of Reading-wood. Device change. Quarterly Or and gules, in bend two roses sable. [The submitter's previ-ous device, Vert, on a chevron purpure fimbriated argent, a rose sable fimbriated argent barbed and seeded proper, is retained as a badge. Laurel adds:Nice device!] * Caterina Siren. Name and device. Sable, a siren and in chief two escallops argent. [All praise from Laurel: Nice 16th century English name! Nice device! Nice cant! Siren is an alternative term for mermaid, and the two terms are interchangeable and syn-onymous.] * Caterina Siren. Badge. (Fieldless) On an escallop argent a chevron inverted couped gules. * Jacobus Broudester. Name and device. Per pale vert and Or, within a Bowen knot crosswise a clew of yarn counterchanged. [Laurel writes: Nice Latinized English name for the late 14th through early 15th centuries!] * Sophia de la Roche. Badge. (Fieldless) A hen gules maintaining in its beak a stalk of wheat Or. * Sophia de la Roche. Badge. (Fieldless) A hen gules maintaining in its foot a loaf of bread Or. * Su of the Silver Horn. Alternate name Justa Minet.
