The Crier, January 2020 1
The Crier Topics of Importance to the Severn Town Club Community
JANUARY 2020 THE SEVERN TOWN CLUB, INC.
From the President Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe that we’re 1/5th of
the way through the 21st Century- remember when 2000
started and everyone was wondering if the computers
could make the transition. Well, they did, and we did as well, and as the
saying goes, “Life moves on.” So, let’s keep moving and have a
wonderful and productive year!
However, just a brief look back at our Holiday Party. What a festive way
to end up in 2019 and celebrate the holiday season! Tom and Mary Milan
made everything so inviting, the conversation was lively, and the array of
delicious foods was outstanding! Thanks to the hospitality committee
and everyone who contributed. Be sure to look at the great photos.
The Spotlight this month is on Mary Milan. One great lady and always
ready to step up and contribute to the club in so many ways; as a Board
officer and on various committees.
We had our yearly Soup and Salad luncheon on Thurs.,
Jan 16 at Phyllis Peters house. We feasted on delicious
soups and salads and heard the Holly Ball financial
results and the distribution of funds that had been
determined by our Finance committee. After some
discussion, the membership voted to approve the allocation of funds.
Also, we had Christmas in January at the luncheon. Members brought
items for the Weinberg Residence, the Domestic Women’s Abuse
Shelter. Just for fun, we had our book exchange- bring a book and
exchange it for a new one. One member asked me if she could bring lots
of books- I suggested that she keep those for our April “Books for
B.I.G.” drive.
Mark your calendars for Feb 18th!! This is the date of the state GFWC
meeting hosted by the Chesapeake Dist. It’s being held locally at the
Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Let’s give STC member and Chesapeake
District President Janet Morgan a big show of support and turn out for
this meeting! Description and sign up information are in the newsletter.

The Crier, January 2020 2
It’s only January, but we’re looking to the start of a new STC term in
June. We need a “few good women” to step up to the roles of President,
1st and 2nd V. Pres., Treas., Corresponding and Recording Secretaries.
This club is only as good as the active participation of its members, so
please, volunteer, or if the nominating committee comes calling- say
Yes!
2020 is looking good so far. At STC, we’re definitely lookin’ good and
movin’ on!
Warmly,
Sheryn

Spotlight: Mary Milan Sheryn Blocher
This month features another Maryland native. Mary
grew up in the Baltimore area, attended American
Univ. and then worked as a secretary to a Division Manager at
Westinghouse.
Mary and Tom have two children. She was a Chapter President of the
Child Study Association of MD. Being a stay at home mom Mary
engaged in many activities with the children when they lived in
Richmond, VA. She was also an avid tennis player and played
competitively in VA.
Mary was on the Board of the Medical
College of VA, Commonwealth
University Hospital Hospitality House
that raised $200K to renovate a house to
be used by the patients’ families. This
program, now called “Doorways” has
expanded to 115 rooms, and Mary is very
proud to have been a part of the original
team that has now housed over 175K
family members.
Mary actively worked on committees at the Science Museum of VA.
She vividly remembers the challenges of a fundraiser for the museum in
the center of a dinosaur exhibit!
Tom took a position with Ernst and Young and moved to DC while Mary
stayed in Richmond to allow her daughter to finish high school. Upon
her daughter’s graduation, she joined Tom and moved to Potomac.
Mary was invited to join the Circles Board of the Kennedy Center and
enjoyed this commitment as well as belonging to the Little Farms Garden
Club in Potomac and taking up golf.
Tom became the Regional Director of Accounting/Auditing and National
Director of the SEC practice for Ernst and Young. They lived between
NY and Potomac. Upon retirement, Tom was invited to consult with the
Transparency International Board. This position gave them the unique
opportunity to travel internationally and to meet numerous foreign
dignitaries and their wives.
Now here in Annapolis; Mary enjoys entertaining, activities and having
family and their 5 grandchildren visit. For the Garden Club of
Annapolis, Mary was Treasurer and the 1st Chair for their May Day
fundraiser. She chaired the Women’s Committee at AYC for 4 years,
started their annual trip to NYC and is currently the vendor chair for the
AYC Fashion Show and Vendors Boutique. She belongs to New
