The Crier, April 2019 1 The Crier Topics of Importance to the Severn Town Club Community APRIL 2019 THE SEVERN TOWN CLUB, INC. From the President Ah, April showers! We’ve had so much rain, that sometimes it feels like we do have that black cloud hovering over us! But the silver lining is that the lovely blooms and balmy temps of Spring are also on their way! Our March mini-fundraiser at Café Mezzanotte was a hit! 53 members, spouses and friends enjoyed a great meal, wonderful conversation, a terrific speaker, and we raised $712 to donate equally to the Boys & Girls Clubs and Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. Kudos to Program Chair Jan Stewart! It’s almost time to renew your membership and pay your annual dues. We will be voting at the April General meeting to approve a $10 increase in the dues. The article from Bonnie Mulieri details all the information for paying your dues. We’ve having a great 2018-19 STC season and more will certainly be on tap for next year, so get those membership renewals in! Sharon Boettinger is spotlighted this month. She’s been an STC member for five years and has been active in several areas of our club. She is a very ‘with it’ woman, always so organized, gracious and willing to help. And, her professional and volunteer backgrounds mesh so well with CASA as this year’s major recipient. April 18 th is our next General Meeting to be held at the Elks Lodge. Everyone gave the site a thumbs up after our first meeting there. Our speaker will be Rebecca Tingle, Director at CASA. She will give us information about this wonderful organization that is helping children who are truly in need. Be sure to check the Hospitality article to see what you are to contribute for food. Also, don’t forget to bring your used books to the April meeting to donate to B.I. G.! If you’re a brown thumb like me, I’m sure that you’re already getting out for Spring clean-up. If not, just get outside anyway and celebrate the return of Spring time! Warm regards, Sheryn Severn Town Club, Inc. 2019-2020 Annual Dues Bonnie Mulieri

It will soon be time to renew your membership

and pay your dues for the 2019-2020 year. Our Annual Dues have been

set at $50 for a number of years.

However, as we now incur a rental fee for our new meeting space at the

Elks Lodge, it will be necessary to increase the dues to cover the rental

cost in the Annual Operating Budget.

The Board has approved the recommendation that the annual dues be

increased to $60 starting with the 2019-2020 dues.

The membership will vote on the dues increase at our April 18th meeting.

You will be notified by email of the results of the vote.

Membership renewal and collection of dues runs from May 1st- May 31st.

Please send your Directory Update Form and a check made out to

Spotlight: Sharon Boettinger Sheryn Blocher

This STC’er fits in perfectly with our choice of CASA as the major

recipient for the 2019 Holly Ball. Sharon’s professional and volunteer

background has been centered around guidance and counseling for

children and adults.

Sharon is a local gal, born and raised in the Baltimore area. She graduated

from Notre Dame of Maryland University with a B. A. in History and

Political Science and continued her education with a M.A. from Hood

College in Human Sciences and Psychology. She has certification as a

Guidance Counselor, Pupil Personnel and as a Supervisor of Guidance.

Her career from 1980-1998 included positions as a case

worker for the Baltimore City Dept. of Social Services and

Guidance Counselor or Chairperson, Program Specialist

and Pupil Personnel Worker in several Frederick County

high schools. From 1998-2010 she served as the

supervisor of K-12 counseling and student support

services for the Frederick County Schools. After

retirement from the school system, Sharon consulted as a trainer for a

Bullying Prevention program and the College Board. She completed her

professional career as a Program Evaluator for the John Hopkins School

of Public Health.

Sharon has offered her expertise to serve on numerous committees and

Boards; such as the Mental Health Management Agency, Children’s

Advocacy Center and Families Plus. Her volunteer activities include

assisting with the Anti-Sex Trafficking Program in Baltimore and she is

currently a Legal Advocate for the AA County YMCA Domestic Violence

Program and the Annapolis Immigration Justice Network. Other

community organizations that Sharon has membership in include the AA

Women Giving Together, New Annapolitans and our Severn Town Club.

She joined our club in 2014, and has served on the Youth Art Committee,

produced the Holly Ball program, and is the current Finance Chair.

Sharon and her husband have two children and five grandchildren, who all

live in the area. Daughter Joanna, her husband Jason, and children Maddy,

Amelia and Myles reside in Severna Park, and son Peter, his wife Chris,

and children Layla and Riley live in Pasadena. And, would you believe

that her daughter-in-law’s mother is none other than fellow STC member

Margene Kennedy!

I am amazed each month as I learn of the wealth of talent, interests and

accomplishments of the members of our club. Sharon certainly has an

abundance of all of these, and I am delighted that she is a part of the

wonderful STC family.

MARCH MEETING

And a good time was had by all...our

March Meeting at Café Mezzanotte

featuring Dean Tramontana, our speaker

from Secret Service, was a success. We were able to raise enough

money to give $354 to both the Maryland Hall for Creative Arts and the

Boys & Girls Club. Thank you all for participating in that event! See

pictures in the scrapbook at the end of the newsletter.

APRIL MEETING

The April meeting is Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 6:30 pm. Elks Lodge,

2 Pythian Drive, Edgewater, MD 21037. The speaker for this meeting is

our beneficiary of the 2019 Holly Ball funds, Anne Arundel County

Court Appointed Special Advocates (AACASA). Please come to hear

their Executive Director, Rebecca Tingle, give you a presentation on how

this organization recruits, trains and supports citizen volunteers to

advocate for the best interests of these children.

We will have a table set for items to be donated to the Holly Ball’s Silent

Auction. Please place your name and the estimated market value on the

item. Please continue to look for Holly Ball Silent Auction items.

MAY MEETING

The new Annapolis Yacht Club is the venue for our May meeting on

Thursday, May 9, 2019 at 6:00 PM. The cost of this dinner is $40 per

person and we will need your check sent to Bonnie Mulieri by May 1.

We need to alert Annapolis Yacht Club in advance of the number of

participants.

Hospitality Margene Kennedy

Looking forward to seeing everyone once again at the Elks Lodge in

Annapolis. I think all of us enjoyed the warmth of our February

hospitality. Just want to remind everyone that once again they will be

providing us the opportunity to purchase 7 oz. "splits" of red or white

wine. That would be equal to 2 glasses. The purchase price is a very low

$5.00. It is important to try to have the exact amount of cash for

purchase. We will have a very limited amount of change available.

Another plus is that coffee, water, and soft drinks will be available free

of charge. The really good news is that no one will have to bring wine,

water or soda!

Let's stay healthy, so I would like to ask the ladies from A through M

to bring appetizers and N through Z to bring desserts. Last

month we had few appetizers, mostly desserts, so please check your last

name and category of refreshment. Hope to see many of you at the

meeting. Thank you so much!

Finance Committee Sharon Boettinger

The Finance Committee has been working on a summary of guidelines to

assist future members in the distribution of Holly Ball grants.

During the 2019-2020 program year, we hope to host a presentation by

one of our 2019 Holly Ball grant recipients. We also anticipate hearing

from the Anne Arundel Community College student winner of the 2019-

2020 Doris Troutman Scholarship.

B.I.G. – Books for International Goodwill Sheryn Blocher

Don’t forget!! Bring your donation of used books to our General

Meeting on Thursday, April 18.

The following excerpts are from an article that was

recently published in the Capital. This is an example

of how your donated books will help with future

shipments.

Kenyan Educator Selects 20,000 Books from B.I.G.

The president of Book Aid Charitable Trust in Kenya visited Annapolis

recently to help choose books from B.I.G. for the literacy program he

directs in his home country. The 20,000 books are from more than the

70,000 currently housed at B.I.G.’s warehouse at 451 Defense Highway.

He selected college text books, non-fiction and children’s books for his

program. The books will be distributed to schools and libraries in Kenya

when the shipment arrives. This is the 3rd shipment of books from B.I.G.

for this program.

Shipping costs are $3,500 and the Kenyan organization has paid $500 of

that cost. The rest is covered by proceeds from B.I. G. public book sales

and donations. Books at the public sales usually cost from $1-3 dollars.

The next sale will be April 27.

B.I.G. collects about 1,000 books per day. They can be dropped off at

their warehouse 24 hours a day.

Sharing and Caring

Sharing thoughts both joyous and despairing is having

each other in thoughts and heart even when physically

apart.

~SHARING ~ It’s a time to celebrate!!!

Aida and Al Cipriani were in Rome to celebrate their

grandson’s very 1st birthday.

And on the other end of the time spectrum, Sheryn

Blocher and her brother were recently in Kansas to

celebrate their dad’s 97th birthday.

We are an active, diverse group. Please let me know what interesting

things are happening in your life so I can share them with our group.
