They traveled all the way out of the inner harbor, and around the corner to raft-up as the guests of the Del Mar Boat Basin. The week- end trip was organized by the Oceanside Yacht Club with the permission of Camp Pendleton. While this does entail an advanced request and filling out loads of paperwork, the end result was a great weekend get-away enjoyed by all! Liveaboard harbor boater Karie Horst Albert and her husband, David Albert, recorded the following photo journal of all the fun from aboard their Catalina 40, Serenity. “Being recession frugal and budget conscious is a tough life, but there are still ways to go cruising. Honoring theCorinthian Spiritof a Fellow Racer

By Paul Gadbois

Trophies should meansomething! To me, what makes atrophy special is the legend behindthe wood and brass creation andthe person or situation thatmotivated it’s inception. Some, likethe America’s Cup are motivatedby intense national or organ-izational pride, while others are atribute to individuals who, bydemonstrating exceptionalcharacter, motivated others toremember their memory with theestablishment of a commemorativeaward that bears their name.Presentation cases in yacht clubs

are full of such trophies. It is thestory behind each that makes themunique.

In mid -July, harbor sailorswill turn out to race in the 23rd

edition of a series which bears thename of an Oceanside Yacht Clubmember who lost his life whilecrewing aboard a racing vessel.Frank C. Luchsinger wasdescribed by harbor sailing guruMonte Yearley as a terrific sailorand a wonderful person! He hadretired as a licensed captain whohad skippered huge cargo shipsacross the oceans of the world. When a newfangled generation ofelectronic gear including theinnovative GPS came on themarket, Monte and Frank went toPower Squadron courses to learnabout their operation. Montereflected, “ Whenever I got stuck,Frank was sitting right next to meand it was like having my ownprivate navigational expert as atutor!”

Monte went on to sharethat, “Frank loved to race! He hadpurchased a Catalina 27 with aninboard auxiliary motor and soonfigured out that carrying all thatextra weight in fuel, engine, andprop drag slowed a guy down!Frank quickly sold the boat andbought a sister ship with anoutboard so he could be morecompetitive…while racing was fun,the quest to win was serious stuff! He was such an earnestcompetitor, but so generous indefeat and gracious in victory, thathis fellow harbor sailors believedthat he exemplified what is oftendescribed as the Corinthian Spirit

of the sport.”Frank was racing aboard a

Capri 30 owned and skippered bya SMYC member in the 1985OYC’s Holiday Regatta. The boat, under spinnaker, had just enteredthe channel when an unusuallylarge wave knocked it down, theboom swept across the deckthrowing Frank and several othersof the crew into the water. The out-of-control boat was driven onto thejetty and destroyed. The otherracers were able to scramble ontothe jetty or were plucked from thewater. Frank’s injuries wereserious and he “didn’t make it,”according to Monte. Some ofFrank’s crewmates are activeracers in the harbor fleet today, and they still find it a difficultsubject about which to speak…itwas such a tragic loss.

The deed of gift, presentedby his sailing partner Don Shankle, says that the memorial trophy is tohonor the memory of FrankLuchsinger by “Fostering andperpetuating the seamanship artsin the sport of sailboat racing andto support and promote the bestqualities of CorinthianYachtsmanship by enhancing thespirit of friendly rivalry andcamaraderie…”

On July 12th you can bepart of the tradition that honors aman who is remembered as asportsman, seaman, racer andkindred spirit. Previous winnersinclude a “Who’s Who in HarborRacing!” The NOR’s for theSunday competition are posted onthe club web-site. It is open to bothPHRF and OCF vessels.

Hospice CharityRegatta - theChance to Make aDifference…

By Pat Gadbois

Pick up a newspaper orturn on the TV and the chancesare that you will soon be presentedwith an item that has to do with thecurrent recession or the nationalproblem of accessible health carefor all. Coping with either can bothdemanding and stressful. Ifsomeone you love is dealing withan acute illness, and finances area major concern, then the two canpainfully merge.

The one bright spot insuch a devastating scenario can bethe care and services provided bynon-profit organizations such asNorth County’s Elizabeth Hospice. With a staff of nearly 200 andapproximately 350 volunteers, theElizabeth Hospice cares for an

average of 275 patients and theirfamilies daily. Since opening theirdoors in 1978, services have beenprovided to more than 65,000patients and families at the mostcritical time in their lives regardlessof “ethnicity, gender, age, religion, disease, insurancestatus, or ability to pay.”

In recognition of the vitalrole that the organization plays inour community, the membership ofthe Oceanside Yacht Club haschosen to support the hospice byorganizing the Annual ElizabethHospice Charity Regattascheduled for the weekend ofAugust 8th and 9th. The activitieswill include a fishing tournament, raffles, a silent auction, the 7th

Annual Hospice Charity Regattawhich is open to PHRF A and BClasses, Capri 25 One-designclass, PHRF Non-spin and aCruising Class that does notrequire a PHRF certificate, food, live music, spectator boats, andmuch, much more!

2008 regatta participants wait for trophypresentations.

It is a big job! One that requires thecommitment of our whole North

County community. Somewonderful businesses have alreadysigned on as sponsors includingCallaway Golf, Elliot PattitsonSailmakers, the County of SanDiego, Digitainment, K-Tek BoomPoles, the Azure Seas, theOceanside Marina Suites, IrishSetters Inc., Doose Landscaping,Hobie, Helix Electric, FamulareJewelers, Angler’s Tackle, AcmeSafety & Supply Co., WyndhamVacation Ownership, Harbor Fishand Chips, VMG Custom Sails, theOceanside Marine Centre, MountGay Rum, Ulman Sails, WestMarine and many more. TheOceanside Yacht Club and theElizabeth Hospice encouragesharbor boaters and localbusinesses to come aboard assponsors-there can never be toomuch help! It takes many hands tomake such a multi-faceted event asuccess.

Whether you serve as avolunteer who helps to facilitate theactivities, a skipper who competesin the regatta, a participatingcrewperson, a Race Committeemember, a business owner whosupports the regatta with acontribution, or a spectator whoattends the festivities, you arehelping to make a difference in thelives of those the ElizabethHospice serves.

If you would like be part ofthis worthwhile cause, contact theOYC office at 760-722-5751, checkthe OYC web-site for the NOR’sand hospice information;www.oceansideyc.com , EventChairman Mike Borer at 760-822-3380 or [email protected] .

The Fine Art ofBottom Cleaning

By Pat Gadbois

Art? Well, I am firmlyconvinced that there is more tobottom scrubbing than just jumpingin the drink with a pad andscouring the paint off the hull. I wasconvinced of this fact early in myrelationship with the handsomehero who later became myhusband. When we met over adecade ago, we both came withbaggage; Paul’s was a 37-footsailboat and mine was a 35-footpowerboat.

Paul, a certified diver, usually hopped in while playing atCatalina to scour the pesky crittersoff the huge keel of his boat.Having just recently moved to anOceanside slip, I was looking for adiver to keep the bottom of mypowerboat pristine. Pablo said thatcleaning the bottom of a powerboat was “no big deal” and hegallantly offered to do the chore. My heart fluttered and I was

instantly” in like! “ The onlyproblem was that he got busy andthe job kept getting put off. Springpassed, summer faded into fall andthe days grew shorter and thegarden on the bottom grew longer. When a girl is being courted, shedoesn’t like to nag, but…

Finally, Paul decided that Iwas a keeper, so, on a cold, grayday at the end of November, hedecided that it was time to cementour relationship by doing a gooddeed. Since he was a “macho-man,” he only donned the “farmer-John” bottoms of his wet-suitbefore jumping in to scrub. Withchattering teeth and a very bluecomplexion, my Adonis soonsurfaced and flopped himself up onthe dock with all the grace ofbeached walrus gasping, ”Hotchocolate now!”

Well, he proposed the nextspring and we sealed the deal witha July wedding and a promise toNEVER again suggest that bottomscrubbing be on his agenda! The37-foot sailboat has been sold andthe bottom of the powerboat hasbeen kept sparkling clean by aprofessional diver. For the last 7 or8 years, that’s been Joe Braun.

I like to think that Joe ischeaper than a trip to divorce courtor more frequent visits to theMarine Center! I have recentlybeen approached by several “cut-rate” divers from the San Diegoarea with various “special” offers atwhich I have snorted rather rudely.I’m convinced that you get whatyou pay for which includes aprofessional that is as concernedas I am that the rudder or prop

won’t fall off from the ravages ofelectrolysis and that the raw waterintakes remain critter-free so theold girl won’t overheat.

Shaman, a sleek frequently raced Shock35, is Joe’s pride & joy!

Joe is a fellow OceansideHarbor boater. He sails, he races, and he understand why there is aneed for a clean bottom as acompetitive edge and also forengine efficiency. Joe knows aboutthe emotional attachment thatboaters have for their vessels-evenwith an old “gal” like mine! knowthat when the paint job is fresh,he’ll treat it with all the tender careusually reserved for a baby’sderrière, and, as it ages, he willexercise the care and restraint thatwill allow me to get additional yearsof service out of the same bottomjob.

All of this equates to thefact that when a craftsman hasdeveloped the skill, techniques andknowledge to do an exemplary job,it becomes an art! For all of theabove reasons, and years ofmarried bliss, hiring J.B. Divingand Mechanical has been one ofmy better decisions!
