Welcome to the 50th edition of the Craic in Galway magazine. Are we

starting to show our age at all? I am writing this in the wake of the red

moon, when all is calm on the city streets, as the sun shines in its September

haze. Galway is showing little sign of slowing down into the season of

hibernation, as we bring you the Vodafone Comedy Carnival, Baboro

Children’s Festival, the Galway Jazz Festival and lots, lots more throughout

October. You can find it all in our detailed diary section. Halloween is

on the horizon, as the ghostly and ghoulish spectacle brings out the

monster in all of us. We are celebrating with a craicing Game of Thrones

themed front cover, thanks to the King’s Head and Mez’s Costumes. In

fact, Galway is becoming part of a global game, with the launch of a new

Galway monopoly board, which showcases some of the best attractions

across the city and county. Two Galway actors, who dress up for a living,

are set for stardom thanks to the screening of the Callback Queen at the

IMC cinema this month. It is a major platform for both Amy-Joyce Hastings

and Seán T. Ó Meallaigh. The handsome Seán is also the subject of our

Craicing Q and A - so you can find out even more about his journey from

Ros na Run to An Klondike and the Callback Queen. You can chose to take

part in the world’s biggest eye contact experiment, or sit back and stretch

with our yoga feature. It ’s all here, with plenty of news, views, listings and

photography to keep you entertained for a month or so!

Happy Reading,

Sure it’s all a bit of craic!

Over a two week period this summer, John Doyle, who is currently living in Galway, and his friend, Pete Lynch, embarked on the journey of a lifetime, cycling 1,300km from the north to the south of France to raise money for Pieta House. “This was a real case of two relatively inexperienced cyclists going into the unknown.” The duo travelled on two wheels in searing heat, challenging themselves both physically and mentally, in a bid to raise awareness for the suicide prevention charity.

This was not just a cycle for either of us. The belief is that when undertaking a challenge such as this that you suffer from physical exhaustion, stiff muscles and a very badly bruised derriere. This is honestly only a

fraction of what the person has to endure.

The mental battle is where things are either lost or won. This is true in all aspects of life whether it be picking a job, deciding if this is really what I want to do, navigating tough situations in one’s life. The reality is that it is always

hard making these decisions, always suffering from the crippling fear that it might not be the right one. To focus very strongly on the mental aspect of this challenge was of huge importance to both of us.

The cycle started on a blustery Thursday. We left Rosslare with little knowledge of

Page 7: The craic 50

what the trip would fully entail, but both of us were itching to get on the saddle. As we arrived at five in the evening, we made our way 50km south, to a little beach in Portbail. Two nights later, we had to camp between a graveyard and a toilet beside a slaughter house.

As we made our way deeper into the mainland, the climbs got tougher and the temperature higher. It became very difficult to navigate our way. Finally, after playing a bit of catch up, plus a repair job on one of the bikes, we pulled off a 150km day south to the coast again.

This gave us a much needed boost, time to shower, wash our clothes and get some rest. From there, as we made our way further south, the mental battles got tougher. We had to endure one of the worst thunderstorms I have personally witnessed, or had to sleep in.

After La Réole we decided to get off the road and hit the canal. We thought this was pure

genius – but it ended up being a catastrophe. Two punctures later, we realised a serious repair was needed to one of the bicycles and it was decided that putting one bike on the train, while the other continued, was the only option to stay on

schedule.

In true legend fashion, Pete had to complete two days on his own. He did so in incredible fashion - as he had to complete a 160km day. Thankfully we were reunited and completed the marathon journey, cycling into Collioure together.

I know one thing for sure, and that is by surrounding yourself with the kind of people who challenge, support and respect you, that you will become stronger, more resilient and adapt to any challenge you may face.

I am not saying we must always be happy, this would be hypocritical. I am not always happy, and often I feel alone, isolated and, being honest, petrified of certain things. The importance of having someone that you can confide in and, more importantly, rely on is paramount to any one person’s development. The harsh reality is that not everyone is lucky enough to realise they have people like that in their lives. The relevance of this is that it isn’t obvious.

Each decision comes with a set of lessons and, speaking from experience, it is the decisions we get wrong was where we learn the most.

It was a tough climb as 60 insurance professionals from the Insurance Institute of Galway braved the elements of driving wind and rain to scale the heights of Croagh Patrick in aid of Pieta House – the centre for prevention of suicide and self-harm. They joined forces with over 150 of their colleagues for the annual myIBA charity climb, which is now in its 5th year. The event is organised by the Irish Broker Association in memory Dave McDermott of Hastings Insurance Brokers.

“It was a truly brilliant experience,” said one of the climbers, Laura Browne from Knocknacarra.

“From the scenery, to the people who offer words of encouragement for those descending the mountain, to the mandatory photo at the Croagh Patrick sign, the delight and exuberance was infectious. The chapel itself is such a unique building, a place to gain shelter and light candles for which there are so many

reasons”.

Laura’s main tip for the climb is to “go sideways!”

“One of my favourite things,” she explains, “is the welcome public house for the long awaited drink at the bottom of Croagh Patrick. Unfortunately we did not see the sun in majestic Mayo but it certainly did not dampen the spirits.”

Rhonda Cribben, President of The Insurance Institute of Galway said; “Insurance is all about protecting society and maybe as an industry we therefore attract a workforce with a strong sense of community spirit and volunteerism.

“Both the Irish Brokers Association and Insurance Institute of Galway are very eager to help raise awareness and funding for this essential area of work provided by Pieta House and participating in such events as the Croagh Patrick climb allows us to enjoy the company of our colleagues whilst doing so”.

The event was sponsored by FBD Insurance, Manpower Recruitment, Autoglass, Wrightway Underwriting, Premium Credit Irish Brokers Magazine and ITC Group, who provided back packs, goodies and meals for the hardy climbers.

Senator Fidelma Healy Eames is launching her independent campaign for a Dáil Seat in Galway West/South Mayo with a ‘Night at the Dogs’. The event will take place on Saturday October 17th at the Galway Greyhound Stadium.

“I want to see local voluntary organisations benefit too from our ‘Night at the Dogs’. I am delighted to say eleven different voluntary and charitable organisations have elected themselves to benefit,” senator Healy Eames said.

Night at the dogs is based on a simple formula – €5 from each €10 entry ticket to the Greyhound track will go to the ticket buyer’s organisation of choice. The list of voluntary organisations will be on the back of each ticket. Tickets are available through the various organisations or by contacting:

0876776937.

The eleven Organisations electing to benefit are: Maree Community Development Association, Cistic Fibrosis Galway Hospital Project, Rosedale School Renmore, Mervue Senior Citizens, Oranmore French Twinning, Team Hope – ShowBox (www.teamhope.ie), Live house, Galway, Tomorrow for Tomas, Oranmore Maree Volunteer Awards Programme, On the Road

Again (OTRA), Galway City School of Judo

The independent senator understands she wouldnt be able to give over 50% of the takings at the gate to these very worthy causes without the main sponsors including Supermacs, Galway Clinic, Mor Oil, Michael Grealish, iSupply and Donoghue’s Buses!

Here at the Craic in Galway, we have the scoop on this year’s Galway Jazz Festival, taking place on October 24th, 2015 at the Mick Lally Theatre on Druid Lane. This year, the festival has taken a fresh twist with a one-day celebration, entitled Pop-Up Jazz, thanks to a new team at the helm. The small but perfectly formed festival will toast the best of local, national and international jazz music.

The day will kick off at 10:30am with an open workshop in jazz guitar delivered by musician, composer and educator extraordinaire, Mike Nielsen. At 1pm, the hottest trio in Ireland, ‘The CEO Experiment’ will entertain with their unique sound, featuring special guest Michael Buckley on saxophone. The classic piano/bass/drums trio will provide a hugely creative and atmospheric experience.

A panel discussion takes place at 2:30pm with speakers from The

Arts Council, the Irish Times, Bray Jazz Festival, Improvised Music Company and Galway Council Arts Office. The highlight of the one-day extravaganza will be a concert by Gwilym Simcock on solo piano at 8pm. He has been referred to as “a creative genius” by none other than Chick Corea.

The evening finishes off with a set from the one and only Frank Kilkelly along with his trio and guests. Tickets for the event are available from www.druid.ie

Galway actor and writer Seán T. Ó Meallaigh has come to our attention following his performance as one of the Connolly brothers in the hugely popular film, An Klondike, which was selected to close the Galway Film Fleadh this year. This was the first western to be made in Ireland and Seán portrays one of three Irish emigrants hoping to strike it rich during the Klondike gold rush of the 1890s. He is also appearing in the Callback Queen at the IMC from Friday, October 2nd.

What was it like watching yourself on the big screen, especially in An Klondike? It is always a slightly strange experience, but you kinda get used to it over time! When I started in Ros na Rún about 14 years ago I was unable to watch my scenes without shouting at the television... I still see the flaws, but I don’t necessarily vocalise them!

What’s coming up next for you? Well in the immediate future, it’s great that The Callback Queen is getting a release in the IMC - It got a really good reception at the Film Fleadh last year so it’s nice that it’s coming back! I’m doing a bit of filming at the moment in Dublin on a series called Vikings. My part is not huge, but I’m delighted to be

involved in such a large production.

Loves: My family are seriously amazing.

Why did you decide to become an actor?Funnily I think that my family realised it before I did. They encouraged me to join Galway Youth Theatre when I was 17, and to be honest after a few months I remember thinking “I really like this”. I’m very fortunate that I’ve been able to make it my job...although I think my parents have at times regretted encouraging me into such an unreliable line of work!

Favourite place to eat in Galway?Kai for brunch on a Sunday, and when I want to chill out and watch the world, there’s no better place that a seat outside McCambridges on Shop Street.

Favourite place to go out?Anywhere that has some good live music on...which doesn’t really narrow it down.

Single/Attached/It’s complicated?Generally too busy with work!

If you were stranded on a desert island, what three people or items

would you bring with you?

Number one: my camera! I bring it with me everywhere, and If I ended up on a desert island I would be kicking myself if I didn’t have it with me. I’d also take my dad because he’s very resourceful so between us I think we’d manage alright, and maybe even manage an escape. Item number three might be the complete works of Shakespeare. We could entertain each other taking turns doing one man shows!

Have you become very attached to your facialhair?Ha ha ha! It’s always there to some degree... But generally my appearance is at the mercy of whomever is employing me. Current employer was happy to let me keep the beard but gave me an...interesting...haircut. For that reason I’ve been wearing a hat for months!

My ambition is....?To find a good work/life balance

Yoga improves flexibility, builds muscle, aligns your posture, increases serotonin, improves balance and helps concentration. I think we can manage to squeeze five minutes of Yoga into our daily routine. In this issue, Sinéad from Love Yoga gives us some calming yogi exercises for those with an anxious mind.

7/11 Breathing technique Find somewhere comfortable

to sit and you can practice this with your eyes closed. Inhale to the count of 7 and exhale to the count of 11. Try to inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. If you find it difficult to breathe in and out for that long, just shorten the timing e.g 5/9 inhale to 5 and exhale to 9. Make this technique a part of your natural response to feeling anxious, the faster your physical body will relax and your mind will become calm. Breathing is directly linked to our emotional state. Slow your breathing down and your mind and body will follow.

Cat/Cow Pose This pose provides a gentle

massage to the spine and organs in the stomach. Start on your hands and knees in a “tabletop” position with a straight spine. Make sure your knees are hip distance apart and your wrists, elbows and shoulders are in line. Inhale and arch your spine, looking up towards the ceiling. Exhale and round your spine, tuck your chin and look down towards the mat. Stay here for as many rounds as you like, stretching out

your spine and back muscles. Try to move with your breath and on your

final exhale come back to neutral spine.

Halloween 2015 is all about Game of Thrones. And you can show off your colourful character recreations at two special Game of Throne themed nights at the King’s Head this spooky season, with all of your costume needs supplied by the fantastic Mez’s Costumes on Middle Street. The fantasy television series has taken over from Breaking Bad as the top trend this Halloween, with legendary creatures, warring factions, lords, ladies and lovers.

Re-enact (peacefully) the dynastic struggles amongst the realms’ noble families at the King’s Head on Friday, October 30th and Saturday October 31st from 8:30pm onwards. With prizes for the best dressed and free craicin’ cocktails for the first 50 punters on both nights, it’s set to be a ghoulish Halloween weekend to remember.

With its very own majestic throne inside the historic walls on High Street, the King’s Head is the perfect background for all of those selfies in your new Game of Thrones outfit from Mez’s Costumes. A dedicated whiskey bar and a new food menu at the Chop House ensures that it is the place to go this Halloween, as the very regal King’s Head is where the real Game of Thrones can begin, right here in Galway.

Mez’s Costumes are bang on trend this season stocking the very best Game of Thrones costumes for your night out. And yet the ghosts and ghouls won’t rest on their laurels either, as Mez has more stock than ever before for you to choose from, with Galway’s largest selection of costumes, costume accessories and themed party supplies.

Another favourite this year are the zombie creatures who emerge

in the dark of the night. Mez’s Costumes has all of the zombie items including make-up, wigs, and special effects, from scab blood to liquid latex and special effect wax. With so much on offer, a new sale ‘pop-up-shop’ will open this October with half price costumes for men, women and children.

Keep an eye on their facebook page, Mez’s Costumes, to find out more about this new bargain pop up shop in the city. Back at their premises on Middle Street, you can find the very latest costumes from the gruesome to the naughty and back.

And they have new opening hours for October; Monday 10-6; Tuesday 10-6; Wednesday 10-6; Thursday 10-8; Friday 10-8; Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 1-5. For Mez’s Costumes Phone (091) 566 667.

‘The Whole Town Was Captivated’ - The Story of Agnes in Kinvara

CRAICing Feature

“I saw Agnes in a café in Loughrea about ten years ago. She was standing inside with her tray. I loved her and I wanted her, even though I had no reason at the time, but there was no way they would part with her. Two years ago, we opened this shop in Kinvara as my cousin owns the building. I remembered Agnes and I went over, but she was gone! I was

devastated.

They told me she was up in the attic, but I was sti l l not getting her. I felt that wasn’t right, so I went over every week for two months. Bridie, who ran the café, used to try and hide when she saw me coming. After two months, she knew I wasn’t going to stop, and so she sold me Agnes.

I brought her back in three pieces - a head, torso and legs. She had a l ittle sensor and when you walked past her she would do a shimmy. That was great, but her head fell off twice. People are very intimate with her. They kiss her and hug her and all kinds of things, so I had to glue her together.

Agnes went out there and the whole town was

- as told to Avril HORAN by shop owner Maeve Johnston

captivated. It changed their whole world. Every single person who passes during the day practically crash into each other trying to see her. We love Agnes, we would never part with her. I’m like Bridie in Loughrea!

Three months ago, we found this picture of this shop 100 years ago. We didn’t know it existed. This is my great grandmother Nora Mannix and my auntie Lil Johnston - Lil was Nora’s daughter. Look at where Lil is standing, she looks exactly like Agnes! It was very weird and strange, freaky, but amazing.

We found a lot of information from these pictures. My great grandfather’s brother built the house and he died at the age of 27, possibly from TB.

My great grandmother died in 1915 and that’s when Lily got the house. In 1920, she married Ford and the Ford name went over the door.

It was a women’s and children’s drapery shop with groceries on the side. Lily was an innovator. She was the

first person in Kinvara to sell ice-cream! She was a widow at the time and used to travel into Galway to see what was new. The bank manager wouldn’t give her the money for a fridge, but her daughter saved up, and she got it! We didn’t know any of that ‘til we found the picture.

Galway is set to take part in the World’s Biggest Eye Contact Experiment on October 15th, 2015. Organiser Kerry Walker explains that the concept is to share eye contact with strangers in public to rebuild our sense of shared humanity. The idea began in Perth, Australia, by a group called the Liberators and has travelled around the globe.

“About a month ago, my friend saw The Liberators video on facebook and started to organise one in Dublin, so I decided to organize one in Galway too,” says Kerry.

“We did it outside AIB for about an hour during lunchtime. I was so surprised by the positive response we got, from young school boys to

elderly passers-by, they all stopped and connected with us, even in the rain! It was such an amazing experience.

“And because of the response, I have decided to organise it in Galway again as part of The World’s Biggest Eye Contact Experiment. It is going to take place at the same time, everyday all over the world. It is truly a fulfilling experience,” she says.

The event will take place outside the AIB on Shop Street on October 15th, but that is subject to change. Keep an eye on their facebook page for more details.

Two local Galway actors will appear on the big screen at the IMC on the Headford Road this October as the film, The Callback Queen opens at the cinema for one week only from Friday, October 2nd. The comedy stars Amy-Joyce Hastings from Oughterard, who also had a hand in producing, and Seán T. Ó Meallaigh, who is the subject of our craicing Q and A, in the leading roles.

The indie flick will appeal to a range of audiences including fans of comedy, romance, epic fantasy and showbiz stories. It originally had its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh where it was warmly received and has now come full circle.

“I’m really delighted The Callback Queen is finishing its theatrical run at the IMC Galway,” explains Amy-Joyce Hastings.

“It feels like it’s coming full circle, because we originally had our world premiere at the 25th Fleadh, and it’s a kind of

homecoming screening for me personally after seeing it on the big screen at film festivals around the world. It had its first one week cinema run at George R. R. Martin’s cinema in New Mexico and then at several cinemas around Ireland including up North. It’s really cool to end up at home, “ she told the Craic in Galway.

The plot sees Hastings play a vivacious Irish actress in the cutthroat London film industry, striving to land a role in an epic fantasy film, directed by Vincent Catalano (Mark Killeen).

“This film was an amazing experience for me,” she says. “As well as starring as Kate, I produced it along with a few others. I’ve been on sets as an actress since I was really young, but I learnt more on this feature from every angle. It was a huge learning curve and a huge adventure. Most of all it was a lot of fun doing comedy with a great international cast.”
