SQUADRON LEADER What a great turnout we had from the CHS ROTC unit last month. That is the largest crowd that they have ever brought out. Col Mackey and Sgt Hardie brought out 54 cadets and the bus drivers. We really appreciate their help on our highway trash pickup days. They help us and the cadets get credit for their public service requirements. We also had a fantastic speaker for the cadets. It was unfortunate that our projector was not able to handle the job, but what a great presentation for the squadron. John “Lucky” Luckadoo had some really interesting stories and did a good job of keeping everyone interested. On the subject of the projector, following the embarrassing showing at our last meeting, yours truly went in search of a new more powerful machine. After searching online, I found one that should handle our needs for quite some time. It should be capable of projecting in just about every lighting situation. Still working on learning how to make everything work, but it’s coming along. Patti and I will be returning from a military reunion in Philadelphia as this goes to print, so I would expect that I can bring some firsthand knowledge of the federal shutdown back with me. It’s a good thing that we have already been there a couple of times and don’t necessarily need to do the tourist thing. This reunion is a gathering of the first squadron that I was in during my Navy time. We get together about every two years to tell lies. The stories just get better every time we get together. The CAF Airsho© is coming up fast and is the same time as our meeting. I hope that you get a chance to go to not only see a great show, but to go to the member meeting that is held in conjunction with the show. That meeting is on Friday, 11 October and the meeting will begin at 3 PM in the Commemorative Center Hangar. That is your time to cast your vote for the General Staff and to have your say on moving the CAF Headquarters. If you are there in person, be sure to go to the meeting, but if you are unable to make it out to Midland please make sure that you mail in your completed absentee ballot no later than 11 November. These will not be mailed out until after the general membership meeting, roughly 14-15 October. Once again, I don’t care how you mark your ballot, but if you have a strong opinion of this one way or the other, you need to cast your ballot. It is amazing to me how few CAF members actually cast their votes in the past (somewhere less than 10% of the eligible voting members actually cast a vote). Col. Dan Summerall, Squadron Leader XO REPORT Not much has happened since the last meeting. I did get the opportunity to talk to several people about the proposed move. Seems that most people I talk to are in favor of moving the Headquarters. Most express concerns over the costs and are waiting until the General Meeting at AIRSHO to ask questions. If they get the right answers they will support the move. After some research, I’m leaning toward approval. I am going to AIRSHO. If I don’t hear what I like, I will vote against. While visiting the USS Lexington, I found this hanging on the hangar deck near the mess hall. Col. Tom Peters, XO Officer Coyote Squadron Officers Squadron Leader Col. FINANCE REPORT Palestine Municipal Airport celebrates 80 years!Saturday dawned bright and shining - oops, wrong Saturday! Saturday, September 28th dawned cloudy with multiple percentages chances of rain from all over East Texas. But the clouds didn’t scare away the visitors and some airplanes. Hoping that the Coyote Squadron’s PT19 could make the trip, Col. Gene Hathorn looked over the weather situation: He could get to PSN, but could he get back to CRS? Decision time - abort flight. A good call it turned out to be. Cols. Todd Jones and Tuck Edwards loaded up the PX trailer with all kinds of goodies, and were then closely followed by car carrying our PX Officer Col. Dottie Hathorn and her driver Col. Gene. City of Palestine officials and Airport staff, along with local pilots belonging to the newly established chapter of the EAA did a great job of putting together this celebration! Kids and adults alike enjoyed the classic cars courtesy of local pilots and Cars of Palestine classic car club, radio-controlled airplanes who put on an excellent “airshow”, food concessions including Rump’s BBQ and Contemporary Caterings tacos and of course, airplanes from warbirds to RV’s to General Aviation. This is something new for the citizens of Palestine and Anderson County who have not attended the Corsicana show - getting up close and personal to airplanes. Garnering lots of attention were Karen Brinkley’s O2, the BT15 from the DFW Wing and our own Bob Dunn in his PT19. Karen and Brian flew in on Friday and attended the Aces Dinner with Jim and I. Speakers included a World War II “ace” pilot flying a P38, and a Vietnam War pilot whose stories intrigued the audience and gave insight into the differences, as well as, the similarities in being a pilot during war-time. Bob Dunn was on his way to the Waco show when it was cancelled and so he landed in Palestine and visited with the Squadron members. Col. Ken Fling also drove over to share in the day. By noon, the clouds were gathering and getting blacker, and a pop-up shower convinced those pilots needing to return to their respective home bases to start their engines and head home. Karen and Brian were our guests for the weekend and Sunday was spent watching the weather from the comfort of couch and chairs. The decision was finally made to head for Fort Worth about 5pm on Sunday and we got the word that they were home safe and sound and that pretty Blackbird had easily made the trip. Jim and I want to thank the DFW Wing, Karen Brinkley and Bob Dunn for being a part of what we hope will be an annual event here in Palestine. And congratulations to the City and the new EAA chapter for a very well organized and successful celebration!Col. Candis Wells

FROM THE PX REPORT Thanks to Todd Jones and Tuck Edwards for hauling the PX trailer to Palestine for the 80th anniversary of their airport. Sales of PX items was brisk in spite of the rainy weather.Col. Dottie Hathorn, PX Officer

SUPER CHEFS REPORT COMO ESTA FRIJOLES CABALLO? For all you non-bilingual squadron members, this translates roughly as, HOW HAVE YOU BEAN HOSS? And what is the forecast for the weekend, CHILI TODAY AND HOT TAMALE!! This brings us to our menu selection for October. We are planning on Tamales with a sauce, beans and Spanish rice. SUPER CHEFS, Colonels Charlie & Reva Horton

After two air show seasons flying solo aerobatics at the minimum altitude of 500 ft and 40 dedicated practice sessions of formation aerobatics, Pat Tuckey and Steve Richmond of Falcon Flight passed their check ride at the practice for the Waco Airshow on 27 Sep 2013. With Pat in the lead and Steve on the wing, they demonstrated loops, barrel rolls, line abreast hammerheads, head on passes, in trail 1/2 Cuban eight, and a “Farvel” pass with lead inverted and the wingman upright. Their demo finished with a tuck- under break to land. They are looking forward to next year’s Corsicana Airsho so they can show off their new routine. Col. Steve Richmond

CAN STOMPIN CONTESTAt our October meeting we will have a can stompin contest. A team of 2 colonels will be required to enter the contest. We will have a setter and a stomper in each team. There will be no time limit. The team that stomps the most cans will receive a handsome trophy and be honored in the November newsletter. All colonels bring your empty aluminum cans so we will have enough cans to make the contest fun.
