Editor’s/Plates Notes
It has been a bad time for everyone at the moment; this Coronavirus has put the country in a spin. Wayne and Marilyn were on the Ruby Princess and Marilyn had tested positive to the virus. Marilyn is very fit and healthy and has managed to stay well and at the time of writing was in the last stages of the virus, sounds good and getting better.
It has been a shame to close the club down until June at this stage with absolutely no events or meetings. It is definitely the best and safest thing to do for all members and their families. The club is complying with the government regulations and suggestions.
Speaking of the Government, I am totally gobsmacked by the people using this pandemic to knock the Government; it seems to be to be absolutely the wrong thing to do at this time. It seems to me that a certain side of politics takes any opportunity they can to belittle the government, even when their party is very quiet and seems to be agreeing with everything being done. Just before this pandemic the Prime Minister was abused for not welcoming the NZ Prime Minister into the Country. Fact was that the Prime Minister was at the very time in deep discussion over the pandemic and discussing how to introduce level one restriction. I bet that if he did put on a show meeting the NZ Prime Minister he would have been belittled for not doing anything about the Coronavirus. This is not the time people should be playing politics; it is a time for caring, sensitivity and doing the right thing. Stay home, do not associate with more than 5 people and practice social distancing.
On a brighter note I will keep printing the newsletter until this is all over, not only does it keep my mind
working it gives me a break from the endless working on motor cars.
FEES Due Before May AGM
Due to Covid 19 it is requested to please pay by Direct Deposit to

or cheque to
PO Box 731 Cowra 2794 There has already been discussion on registration day this year, it is a long way off but time goes so fast. If the Coronavirus is still continuing and restrictions are still in place there are a few alternatives
1. Owners get a pink slip 2. Registration Day but done by appointment times only – no more than one car/one person at a time. 3. Registrar or scrutineer to visit (may not be allowed) 4. Registrar to post out all paperwork for registration. No inspection. Due to the
fact that the vehicles have not been used for so long as we do not use log books, there is a very low possibility of the vehicle developing any faults. Owners to do a light and safety check. Most vehicles would have done less than 100 kilometres since September 2019.
Let us all hope it is over before Rego Day in August
Included in this newsletter is the proposed April Minutes
Happy Motoring

Mazda in Australia Mazda is a tremendously successful automobile company that continues to produce approximately 800,000 vehicles a year. The company began life in 1920 as a machine tool manufacturing company, Toyo Cork Kogyo, LTD. However, the company ceased their manufacture of machine tools and shifted their focus to automobiles during the car’s heyday in Japan. The Second World War saw many manufacturing companies turn towards producing military items, and Mazda was no different. In 1931, the company shifted focus yet again and began producing weapons for the war movement. After World War II, Mazda returned to making automobiles. In fact, Mazda produced the first four wheel drive in 1960. The Mazda R360 proved to be incredibly popular and the company enjoyed all the success the vehicle brought. This incredibly compact car was touted in Japan’s large cities, where space is at a minimum. The Mazda R360 then gave way to the Mazda P360, also called the Carol. Just like the R360, the P360 was popular in Japan. These models of Mazda paved the way for the company to springboard into international territory, including Australia. Although Mazda does not currently have any manufacturing or assembling facilities in Australia, they are a major importer of vehicles into the country. Formally Mazda Australia Pty LTD, has been in operation for more than 40 years and experienced a great amount of success in the country. In addition to the commercial vehicles offered on the market, Mazda offers a good variety of light weight trucks for business use. The headquarters for Mazda Australia Pty LTD is in Notting Hill in Victoria. This headquarters employs 125 individuals in the country. In addition to the headquarters office, Mazda has several offices in most of the states in the country. However, the majority of employees work in the vast dealership network. Approximately 2,000 Australians are employed by Mazda. There are over 130 dealers of Mazda vehicles scattered around the country. One of their most popular models of vehicles is the Mazda 6, a sporty car that has proven to be a big seller for the automotive manufacturer. The Tribute, a four wheel drive vehicle has also been a top seller for Mazda and is increasingly popular in all parts of the country. Available in both V6 and four-cylinder models, these vehicles are one of the staples in Mazda’s line of commercial grade automobiles. On the sporty side of things, Mazda’s RX-8 continues to push the envelope with speed and design. Mazda Australia Pty LTD has formed the Mazda Foundation. Founded in 1990, the foundation works to contribute to the community. Funded by both the Australian and Japanese arms of the Mazda corporation, the Mazda Foundation has provided nearly three million dollars to a wide variety of projects and activities to community groups and individuals around the country. Mazda is one of the industry leaders in giving back to the community and has raised the bar for other profitable organization to offer a portion of their funds to worthy programs and projects.

CATTLEMAN’S CUTLET & TOMATO SALAD
INGREDIENTS SERVES 2 500g Beef Rib Eye on the bone, trimmed (Cattleman’s Cutlet) olive oil 50g unsalted butter, chopped 1 tbsp whole fresh sage leaves salt & pepper Tomato Salad 2 cups rocket leaves 3 large heirloom tomatoes, thickly sliced 1 medium shallot, thinly sliced 1 Tbsp olive oil 2 tsp red wine vinegar pinch sugar Fresh basil leaves METHOD Allow steak to come to room temperature on the bench, at least 30 mins, before cooking. Preheat barbecue to high. Whisk together olive oil, red wine vinegar and sugar in a large bowl. Add shallots and tomato, stir well. Add rocket and basil, toss to combine. Pat steak dry with paper towel, drizzle both sides with oil, and sprinkle with a good pinch of sea salt. Place on preheated barbecue and cook 12 minutes. Turn and cook a further 10–12 minutes. Transfer steak to a plate, cover loosely with foil, and rest for 10 mins. While the steak is resting, melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sage and cook, stirring, until leaves start to crisp. Remove from heat and drizzle over beef. Serve steak and sage butter with salad.
Three ingredient chocolate peanut butter fudge Sometimes all it takes is three ingredients and a little ingenuity. You can Ritz this up as much as you like by adding extra nuts and fruit and anything you like. But if you've got the simple basics, you'd be surprised what you can achieve. Difficulty easy Cooking time - less than 15 minutes serves 8 Ingredients 300g milk chocolate chips 1 x 395g tin sweetened condensed milk ¾ cup of crunchy peanut butter Method Line a square slice tin with parchment paper. Place choc chips and condensed milk in a small heavy based saucepan and melt together, stirring on low heat until smooth and combined (or place in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 1 minute at a time and stir until combined and smooth). Pour chocolate mixture into the lined slice tin and pop in the fridge for 15 minutes to set slightly. Warm your peanut butter a little in the microwave to just soften it (15 seconds should do it). Spread it over the set chocolate base and then put in the freezer to set for about 1 hour. Slice up and serve. Tip - heating the knife under hot water can help with a clean cut.

BOOK REVIEW
“Bondi to the Baltic” by John McCombe tells the story of an extraordinary vintage car journey halfway across the world. The small convoy comprised a 1920 Dodge Tourer and a 1927 Willys Whippet and they covered an astonishing 20,000 kilometres in two stages in 2014-15. John McCombe, one of the eight adventurers, has written a book describing the amazing trip from its genesis in the garages of Sydney and Perth across the countries of the old Silk Road to its culmination near Helsinki, Finland. There are plenty of details about the cars: how they were adapted to the conditions they would face, innovative solutions to problems with the engines and wheels, and the way they attracted the attention of other drivers, journalists, immigration officers and policemen as well as curious bystanders. But it’s not just a story of cars with character. With a sense of perspective and history John weaves in other features of a great road trip – heart-warming encounters with locals, tensions with border force personnel, and fascinating cultural experiences. The generosity of the people they met all along the way obviously humbled the travellers and challenged
many of their pre-conceived ideas about other countries. The book is full of glorious photos of the cars as well as scenes from the exotic places they drove through and people they met along the way. This is a ripping yarn, told by a born story teller with a laconic style and a dry wit. It would make a great gift for anyone interested in vintage cars, adventure stories and the wonderfully diverse world we live in. “BONDI TO THE BALTIC” by John McCombe can be bought online at Wild Dingo Press (priced at $32.95). https://www.wilddingopress.com.au/product/bondi-to-the-baltic https://bonditothebaltic.com Facebook – Bondi to the Baltic
Timely displays at City of Canada Bay Museum With all the news about the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) health alert it doesn’t take much imagination to
compare it with the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918. The following article by historian Troy Lennon in the Daily Telegraph (27/2/20) points this out. “In 1918 reports of a deadly flu virus began filtering from overseas into Australia. One of the first stories
that made it to Australia was that King Alfonso XIII of Spain and some of his ministers had contracted the disease. It was therefore dubbed Spanish flu.
Cowra Crankhandle Page 14
Despite a quick response by quarantine officials, seeking out possible cases arriving by boat, the disease still made it to our shores. The first cases began appearing in Australia in July 1918, with many people confined to the quarantine station at North Head in Sydney. Concord Council's Infectious Disease Register
In Sydney schools and theatres were closed
and people were told they had to use masks in public. By the end of 1919, Spanish flu had killed 15,000 Australians.
With a death rate of 2.7 per 1000 of population, Australia had one of the lowest recorded death rates of any country during the pandemic. Some of this was due to the fact that Australia heard the news of the disease via telegraph and had months to prepare.”
Currently, two displays at our City of Canada Bay Museum are most appropriate: “The Armistice and Beyond”, which highlights the aftermath of the Spanish Flu Pandemic and “A Tribute to the Walkers of Yaralla”.
In his will Thomas Walker bequeathed £100,000 pounds ($200,000) to build the Thomas
Walker Convalescent Hospital at Concord West*. This hospital was used to quarantine many of those suffering from Spanish Flu. “Australia’s Top 50 Philanthropic Gifts”
In October 2013 The Myer Family Company Ltd. compiled a list of Australia’s top 50 philanthropic gifts. This included Thomas Walker’s gift of the Thomas Walker Convalescent Hospital and reads as follows:
NSW Merchant, banker and benefactor, Thomas Walker, became joint owner of merchants William Walker & Co. upon the death of the founding partners and later went on to be director and president of the Bank of New South Wales.
Although vigorously opposed to showy expenditure and tight-fisted, Walker was conscientious and benevolent, making numerous personal benefactions and for a time employed a private agent to seek out and relieve people in distress.
Shortly after his passing, construction of the Thomas Walker Convalescent Hospital commenced in 1891 on 12 acres at Rocky Point through his generous £100,000 bequest. The original amount was quickly spent, so an additional £50,000 was contributed by his sister Joanna Walker, daughter Eadith, and Eadith’s adopted sister Annie Masefield.
The hospital was run exclusively for patients who were convalescing or in need of rest, fresh air or peaceful surroundings. Having been referred by many Sydney hospitals, most patients stayed for up to four weeks with running costs met by Thomas Walker’s endowment. Over 70 years the convalescent hospital would see more than 50,000 patients.
In 1979, it was transferred to the NSW Health Department and now houses the Rivendell Child Adolescent and Family Unit, a centre for the care and treatment of emotionally disturbed adolescents. Reprinted from City of Canada Bay Heritage Society Editors note :- Claude Boulenaz, Keith Elliot and I are considered very special people by the Canada Bay Historical Society. All three did a great deal of work with the Concord Historical Society in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. All my grandfather’s magic lanterns and hand painted glass slides are in the society’s possession. Just in case anyone wondered the connection to Concord.

Joke The kids filed into class Monday morning. They were all very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on salesmanship. Little Sally led off. "I sold SES cookies and I made $30" she said proudly. "My sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civic spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success." "Very good", said the teacher. Little Debbie was next. "I sold magazines" she said, "I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events." "Very good, Debbie", said the teacher. Eventually, it was Little Johnny's turn. The teacher held her breath. Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher's desk. "$2,467", he said. "$2,467!" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling?" "Toothbrushes", said Little Johnny. "Toothbrushes", echoed the teacher, "How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?" "I found the busiest corner in town", said Little Johnny, "I set up a Chip & Dip stand and I gave everybody who walked by a free sample. They all said the same thing, 'Hey, this tastes like dog shit!' Then I would say, 'It is dog shit, you wanna buy a toothbrush?'" “I used the Bill Shorten method of giving you some crap, dressing it up so it looks good, telling you it's free, and then making you pay to get the bad taste out of your mouth." Little Johnny got an A+ for his assignment. Bless his little heart. Submitted by John Toohey
