A few evenings ago, with lack of anything better to

do, I went down to our basement to “see what was

in my drawers”. The (storage) drawers were replete

with old photos, report cards, and other family memo-

rabilia. While not looking for anything in particular, I

did come across a copy of my Aunt Millie’s research on

our family’s history. Her document started with a chap

by the name of Richard Cooke, of Bristol, England, and

culminated with the marriage of Josie Ann Haynes to

John Abner Webb, both of Moreland. The two, my great

grandparents, were married on Christmas day, 1895.

Aunt Millie included some very interesting notes about

our family. She wrote that Heard County was named after my fifth great something or

another, Gov. Stephen Heard. He must

have been quite a “name dropper”, as

he reported to have been the next door

neighbor of George Washington. My

Aunt also noted that “this line reputed to

go back to William the Conqueror about

1066”. This, of course, has not been

proven or even researched, so it may just

be hearsay. But I, however, choose to

believe Aunt Millie just ran out of both

time and paper, as perhaps did the Ma-

yans when they ended their calendar in

2012!

The names on this document were real people. Their occupations probably ranged from

“Pillar of the Community” to “Village Idiot” and a lot in between. They surely had the

same dreams and desires, the same frustrations, setbacks and successes as we do today.

But their combined attitudes and actions influenced, indeed developed, the world we

live in today. Somewhere along the way, the positive attitudes and ideas of our ancestors

outweighed the negative, resulting in a better society for us. I wonder what positive men-

talities we are engendering in our children now which might help make their world even

better? You never know. Maybe some words of encouragement to our next generation

will show up again in one of our descendants one hundred years from now. Or, perhaps,

one thousand years!

JoePost Script: Aunt Millie’s study only included my Mother’s side of the family, so I have

very little information about the Williams “bunch”. According to verbal reports by my

father’s side, the Williams clan had occupations ranging somewhere between politicians

and horse thieves. That “somewhere between” probably didn’t leave too much room for

much else!

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shop-per an interesting and effective advertising medium.

pations probably ranged from

“Pillar of the Community” to

tween.”

“Words of Wisdom”from Ray Kroc

The two most

important requirements

for major success are:

first, being in the right

place at the right time,

and second, doing

something about it.

Luck is a dividend of sweat.

The more you sweat, the luckier you get!

The quality of a leader is reflected in

the standards they set for themselves.

The more I help others to succeed,

the more I succeed.

When you’re green, you’re growing;

and when you are ripe, you start to rot.

Seasonal Curb Appeal

Curb Appeal is not just for spring and summer months. Curb appeal is essential when it comes to selling in the winter as it is any other time of the year.

Here are a few tips for improving your homes curb appeal this Winter:

The lawn - most lawns in Georgia are brown during these cooler months, but that doesn’t mean it has to be un-kept and messy. Go over the lawn with a mower every 2 weeks to “vacuum” up any debris, rake up fallen leaves and remove any garbage.

Landscaping - remove any dead plants and weeds, and add color with winter hardy plants. In our area several plants have blossoms that can add instant color to your front yard. Camellias, pansies and kale are just a few that can instantly perk up a flower bed or pots placed by the front door. Trim existing bushes. The last thing you want is for the overgrown hedge to reach out and grab a quest or buyer while walking on the walkway to the front door.

Clean - Pressure wash the siding of the house, the sidewalk and driveway. If your roof is showing signs of algae, spraying a water, TSP (trisodium phosphate ) and bleach mix will help remove the streaks that often concern buyers. Wash the win-dows! Inside and out! Remove dead bugs and spider webs.

Paint - Apply a fresh coat of paint to the front door. If your garage door can be seen from the street then it may need to be cleaned and painted as well.

Hardware - Replace worn hardware and replace rusted light fixtures, door han-dles, kick plates, etc. If you’re guilty of having “sad” ceiling fans, you know the ones that were meant for interior use and once exposed to damp weather, they started drooping … then those will need to be replaced with exterior use fans. Check the doorbell, it is often broken.

“I also tend to like cars that need me. To me, cars are like old screen doors.

I know that if I jiggle the latch and move it this way, it will open for me and no

one else. And that’s the kind of cars I like. So I’m the worst possible kind

of consumer to do a test on. I like idiosyncratic things. I mean Bugatti

had that hard-to-make hollow front axle and mechanical brakes,

long after everybody else changed to hydraulics. But that’s what

gives Bugattis character, and that’s what makes them interesting to me.”

Coweta Community Foundation’s

Grass Roots Campaign

Annual Call for Grant Applications

The Coweta Community Foundation (CCF) is now accepting applications for small grants (not to exceed $1,000) to benefit worthy local, charitable organiza-tions. Individual requests of any kind will not be con-sidered or funded.

CCF’s funding interests include, but are not limited to, women and children’s issues, public safety, educa-tion, and the arts. CCF maintains a broad and ongo-ing grants program which does not discriminate with regard to race, sex, religion, nation origin, handicap, familial status or age.

In 2011, CCF awarded a total of $6,000 to Bridging the Gap, Cochran Mill Nature Center, Community Wel-come House, Coweta Veterans Administration, Master-works Chorale, Newnan Community Theatre, Newnan High School, and The Mike Stokely Foundation.

Initially established in 1997 by the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, CCF exists to help make the quality of life better for all Coweta County citizens. As a 501(c)3 organization by an entirely volunteer-staffed Board of Directors, CCF’s primary goal is to accept, manage and disperse gifts and bequests from individu-als, organizations, corporations, and estates.

The Grass Roots Campaign grant process is thor-ough, but uncomplicated. Grant requests must be re-ceived between March 1 and April 1, 2012 and must meet criteria specified in the online grant application found on the CCF website under the tab labeled Grants Process. Go to: www.cowetafoundation.org

Additional grant process inquiries can be made to the Foundation by calling 770.253.1833.

Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation’s Second Annual

Luncheon and Fashion Show set for Saturday, March 24th

“The Language of Flowers” is the theme for Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation’s 2012 gala luncheon and fashion show. The event will again be held at “Something Special” in downtown Newnan. The term ‘the secret language of flowers’ was coined in the Victorian era when every flower signaled a certain feeling or emotion. It was much more proper to send a floral message than to verbally state a sentiment. Today we send flowers to cel-ebrate, to remember, and to mourn – so this language continues to expressed in a very personal way.

Keynote speaker for the event, Jennifer Hop-kins, owner of Virtu Floral and Event Design, will reintroduce this custom by cleverly working messages into bouquets. Using common flowers and plants found in southern backyards, she will create modern versions of tussie-mussies and her special pave´ creations. Hopkins states, “In to-day’s world of technology we seem to have lost so much in the fine art of communication; I look for-ward to bringing a bit of that back by teaching about the lost art of the language of flowers”.

Dillards, Two Turtle Doves, Coldwater Creek, Ann Taylor and Wedgewood Boutique will present their newest spring and summer fashions. Happy bright colors and floral-inspired prints are fore-cast to be a trend making this year’s theme very timely. Modeling will be informal in the style of grand department store tearooms of the past, and the Foundation will bring back many of last year’s popular local models.

Mrs. Sue Royal, an accomplished pianist, will provide light background music. The crowd-pleasing raffle, sup-ported by local merchants and restaurants, will return as well as a silent auction.

Tickets go on sale March 1st and are available for $25 each at the Carnegie Library and Scott’s Bookstore. The 2011 event sold out quick-ly so attendees are encouraged to purchase early. Doors will open at 11:00, the program will begin at 11:30 followed by lunch and modeling at noon. The day’s events will conclude with the raffle and winners of the silent auction.

Something Special, an historic home and events fa-cility is located at 83 Green-ville Street in Newnan’s Greenville/Lagrange His-toric District. Parking is available across the street at the Justice Center with drop-off for those needing assistance at the side door on Reese Street.

Proceeds from the “Language of Flowers” will be directed towards special Carnegie programs slated for the summer and fall. The NCLF, a 501(c)-3

charitable corporation comprised of local members and volunteers, has no paid employees and dedicates all funding to augment special services of the library.

For more information, visit www.newnancarnegielibraryfounda-tion.com or contact the Carnegie at 770-683-1347.

Pictured: Linda Arnall sports a neutral ensemble embellished with this year’s trendy floral accent.

Yellows will be prevalent again in 2012’s spring color palette, pictured model: Nancy Martin

Pamela Prange and Carol Healy will again reprise their unique table decorations to reflect this year’s “language of flowers” theme.

The Healthy Habit has relocated to 44 Jef-ferson St. in downtown Newnan. In business for 30 years, they provide sales of vitamins, herbs, teas and supplements. Owner, Carla Crider, also offers massage therapy as well as health related classes, exercise and cooking demonstrations. Carla can be reached at 770-

251-3854.

“The richest person in the world - in fact all the riches in the world -

couldn’t provide you with anything like the endless, incredible loot available

at your local library.”

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

This month’s article is going to deal with the chronology of a civil lawsuit. The example fol-lows as one of a personal injury suit.

If you sustained a personal injury, the claim would begin with a complaint which is a le-gal document that lays out the claims that the plaintiff has against the defendant (the person or business being sued).

The defendant has to answer within a certain time (usually 30 days). The answer says what portion of the complaint, if any, the defendant admits and what portion the defendant contests, what defenses the defendant may have, and whether the defendant has any claims against the plaintiff or any other party.

Once the answer is filed, the parties usually exchange documents and other information about the issues relevant to the litigation by a process called discovery. Discovery can take three (3) forms, written interrogato-ries which must be answered under oath, document production, and de-positions which are formally transcribed sworn statements taken in front of a court reporter.

The parties can voluntarily resolve all their issues through negotiated settlements, mediations or arbitrations. In many cases one or both of the parties will try to get rid of the case or a portion of it by motions. Basi-cally the parties present to the court those issues that are not in dispute because either both parties agree or because application of the law to the facts dictate a result.

If the parties do not reach an agreement and if the matter is not re-solved by motion, the case will go to trial. In most civil cases either party can choose to have a jury.

At trial the jury hears evidence and arguments for each side and the jury decides the unresolved issues. Once the jury has reached a decision, the judge will order that a judgment be entered for the party who wins.

Conditioning PlantsBeautiful plants have been grown and are ready to be cut and arranged. The

tools, mechanics, and containers have been selected. The next step is to condi-

tion the plant materials so that they won’t wilt and will last as long as possible.

Conditioning means to allow the plant materials to absorb as much moisture

as possible and keep the stem cells from closing. When plant materials are left

out of water (some types even briefly) the stem cells at the ends close and will

not take up water. Always take a bucket of clean water to the garden before

cutting. Gather early in the morning or very late in the afternoon. Use a clean

sanitary knife or sharp clippers. Cut stems on a slant. Place immediately into a

container of water outside. Once inside, cut stems again on a slant under water

and place plant materials in cool water in a cool room away from sunlight for

at least several hours or, preferably, overnight before arranging. Do change the

water frequently.

Flowers absorb water best at pH level of 3.5 which is acid. High levels of dis-

solved mineral salts will adversely affect flower life. Too much or too little floral

preservative can shorten the life of plant materials. Home versions of com-

mercial preservatives include: a few drops of bleach and a teaspoon of sugar;

a captful of listerine; 1/2 teaspoon of bleach, 1/4 teaspoon citric acid (C) and 3

teaspoons of sugar; lemon-lime soda or lemonade - each method added to one

gallon of water. The idea is to acidify the water, prevent bacteria and decay, and

help plants take up moisture.

Here are a few of the great many special treatments various designers and

growers and authors have suggested for specific plant types. First, never use

very cold conditions or refrigeration for tropical flowers and foliage. An all fo-

liage arrangement that will be used for a long time should have a few pieces

of charcoal (tiny) added to keep the water “sweet”. Do not store flowers with

fruits and vegetables. Camellias and gardenias - cut short stems place on cotton

or paper towels (dampened) and cover with dampened paper towel and store

in a waxed box / do not touch petals. Violets - submerge heads and all in wa-

ter for several hours to overnight. Hydrangas - sear stem ends in flame or dip

ends briefly in boiling water and then submerge in deep water. Tulips - wrap to

flower heads in taped newspapers and place straight up in deep water to their

necks overnight. Poinsettas and poppies - sear steam ends in flame and then

completely submerge in deep water several hours. Carnations - soak stems in

room temperature overnight / cut above node. Dahlias - pick in prime or slightly

past - sear - place in warm water and soak stems overnight. Amaryllis, lupines,

delphiniums, hollyhocks - turn upside down, fill stems with wter, plug ends with

cotton or wet papertowel (gently), and, upright, stand in water and soak. Roses -

strip thorns, dip stem ends briefly in boiling water and soak in cool water (deep)

overnight after removing lower leaves. Maidenhair Fer and Caladium and Hosta

leaves, ferns - completely submerge in deep water overnight - (a teaspoon of

starch may help). Lambs ears - do not wet foliage - only lowest stem ends. Pan-

sies - do not wet heads. Wisteria foliage - immerse overnight. Aspidistra, ivy,

yucca, sansivera - wash clean, soak stem ends only; can then hold up out of

water a while. Hellebore - soak heads upside down several hours - after dipping

stems in boiling water and prick. Gerberas - dip stem ends briefly in boiling wa-

ter; place through chicken wire into container of deep water with heads resting

on top of the wire; soak. Daffodils - squeeze sap gently from ends; soak separate

from other flowers in shallow water only. Ornamental grasses - soak a short

time in undiluted vinegar, then in water. Peony - dip stem end in boiling water;

soak in deep water.

Always strip lower leaves and lower branches from flowers and foliage. Strip

thorns off too. Remove insects and dirt and clean well before conditioning.
