My wife and I recently took the opportunity to visit the “new” Coweta County Courthouse and see the

renovation which was just completed. I was happy to see it was allowed to remain “period correct”, along with the addition of some modern safety and convenience features. Headley Construction is to be commended for the good job of organizing and supervising the men and women who brought the century old building back to dignity. She really is something to be proud of.

The courthouse was once the hub of commerce for Newnan and Coweta County. Most of the county’s business was conducted there and the main businesses were located around the square or within one or two blocks. As a boy in the 1950s, I can remember there being five clothing stores, four pharmacies, two hardware stores, two banks, a library, three new car dealerships, a furniture company, and two movie theatres. Another block or two yielded four churches, a bus station, two groceries, the “jailhouse” and even a bowling alley! There was also a little one-room police station on the southeast corner of the square near the sidewalk. Old men played checkers at the east entrance and land was foreclosed at public outcry on the courthouse steps. And don’t forget, Santa chose, out of all places, our courthouse to make his yearly appearance to kick off the Christmas season - and he still does.

Then there are the tales of local characters passed down through the years, sometimes told differently, but always interesting. A man once shot the hands off one of the courthouse clocks, protesting something or another; and the story of that “mysterious room” in the basement where Sheriff Lamar Potts would “interview” suspects under a hot bright light. There was also a some-what intoxicated, but otherwise, pillar of the com-munity who rode his horse through the courthouse and out the other side. My favorite, however, is the story of a prominent, full figured lawyer who was on a diet to lose weight. While trying a case, his pants fell off, exposing his colorful drawers engendering plenty of laughter in the court room.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit our new courthouse, now is a great time to do so. We have much to be proud of in the architectural heritage of our courthouse. She, once again, stands proud in full glory to receive her family, the citizens of Coweta County for another hundred years or so.

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

You’ll be seeing a lot more of us now!

IT’S TIME FOR REVIVAL!Keith Fordham is a dynamic, deeply spiritual evangelist,

who is one of God’s greatly used men. His messages are time-ly, refreshing, always Bible centered, energetic and directly to the point – namely Salvation of Souls.Keith Fordham offers a wealth of experience as he has served many churches across the nation. Over 1450 revivals, more than 36 years of full-time evangelism, crusades in the United States, Canada and India, add a host of thrilling illustrations to his sermons. He often speaks to pastors and deacons at pastors’ conferences and state and national Evangelism Conferences. There have been thousands of professions of faith and other decisions for Christ under his preaching. He was a Vice President of the Georgia Baptist Convention. He has served three terms as President of the Conference of Georgia Evangelists. He has served on the Advisory Board of North Greenville College. He was President of the Conference of Southern Baptist Evange-lists through June 2005.

Keith is a graduate of Samford University, has a Master of Divinity from New Orleans Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from Immanuel Theological Seminary.

Keith’s unique ministry includes his “Pal”, Homer. Keith and Shirley are both graduates of the Maher School of Ventriloquism, and Keith is a member of the North American Association of Ven-triloquists. Keith effectively uses Homer, his dummy, to teach Bible stories and to present brief gospel messages, especially reaching school age children and youth. Homer attracts adults and youth alike to the nightly revival services. Keith’s wife, Shirley, conveys Bible lessons using her “Pal” Joy.

Keith Fordham is especially interested in revival within the local church, and in the re-dedication of members. This is a ministry that stirs and moves the church – it will with God’s help bring revival, seek out the lost, and bring all church members closer to the Lord. God’s hand is on Keith to “draw the net.”

At 8:30 AM on Sunday, October 17, Unity Baptist Church 311 Smokey Road in Newnan, Georgia will commemorate our Fifty First Anniversary by sharing “Homecoming Breakfast” together. At 11 AM evangelist, Keith Fordham from Fayetteville, Georgia will be preaching the first revival message.

The revival will continue at 6 PM Sunday evening. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we will begin at 6:30 PM. There will be special music at every service. Childcare will be available for children from birth thru kindergarten Monday thru Wednesday. Everyone’s invited to attend; you will receive a warm welcome.

of Southern Staging & Redesign

It’s smart to expose your house to a large num-ber of buyers and an open house is a great way to get them inside to preview a house that they might like. However, be aware that everyone that attends may not be in the market for a new house and they just want a way to spend a Sat-urday or Sunday afternoon. Also, everyone that may be in the market for a house, may or may not be qualified for your property.

Real estate professionals, in general, don’t feel that holding a public open house is an effective

way to market a house. They do, however, feel that having an agent caravan open house is time well spent for the homeowner and the agent. It’s a great opportunity to give agents that have “qualified” buyers a chance to view a property so the agents can tell their customers all about the great features of a house.

Assuming that your house is already pre-pared and in showing condition, the following tips can help whether you are you are sell-ing For Sale By Owner (FSBO)or preparing for an agent caravan open house:

Provide Parking - let your neighbors know about your plans so they will be understanding about all the cars parked in front of their property.

Let The Light In - open up all the curtains and blinds and turn on all the lights through-out the house.

Music - Help your agent by having the sound system up and running on a soft music station.

Photos - if your landscaping is “master gardener” quality and it’s the dead of winter, lay out some photos of the yard taken in the spring and summer.

Get Out - of the house that is. Agents aren’t comfortable giving the agent feedback about the house if the owner is around.

Be Receptive - to the agents feedback. It may not be what you want to hear, but they are the professionals. They do this every day, know what buyers are seeking and know about other houses that compare to yours. This is the best information that a seller can have, so that you’ll know what you need to do in order to get a contract.

or impress friends and family, today’s appliances offer innovative design and advanced technology to help im-prove overall style, performance and quality of life.

When preparing for a remodel or refresh, consider appliances with features that make sense for your lifestyle for the perfect fit.

• Sleek Design—While stainless steel offers high design, it does not work with every kitchen’s style. Consider appliance features such as interior LED lighting and LCD control panels for a sleek finish.

space, like dishwashers with a third drawer for long cookware or refrigerators with SlideAway Shelves to better organize and store oddly-sized items.

• S u s t a i n a b l e —EnergyStar- qualified appliances are hot as Americans look to cool their carbon footprint and make a difference. Ensure that your appliance can provide energy-, money- or water-saving benefits.

• Fresh-Food Kit-chen—Culinary fever is on the rise and, in turn, so are appliances that boast restaurant-quality features. This might include convection functionality in the oven or the right refrigerator crisper to extend the shelf life of your fruits and vegetables. Look for models with Airtight Moisture Lock to retain moisture and keep produce fresher longer.

Kenmore eases the kitchen remodel process with refreshed style and innovation to meet many needs and lifestyles. The new Kenmore Elite Trio refrigerator offers 28 cu. ft. of usable interior space, more than other leading brands, in addition to advanced style with an LCD display, intuitive SmoothTouch controls and interior LED lighting. Additionally, Kenmore E l i t e d i s h w a s h e r s feature exclusive 360˚ PowerWash™ Techno-logy and an advanced LCD screen that combines sleek design with top performance. Options like this ensure that the various home needs are met without sacrificing kitchen space or personal style.

Hot Tips For Kitchen Remodels, Appliance Updates

(NAPS)—When thinking kitchen redesign, it’s im-portant to remember that your appliances speak loud-er than words—even if they’re quiet as a whisper. The average appliance life span is more than 10 years and reflects both home and personal style. Whether you’re looking to get better organized, go green, streamline,

• Sound—Quiet operations help appliances, especially dishwashers, better blend into the home and provide a peaceful atmosphere when in use.

• Freezer Space—If you max out space in your freezer, consider drawers for enhanced organization, with Tilt-N-Take functionality for quick access to frequently used items. If you prefer a side-by-side refrigerator, in-door icemakers are sure to add freezer space.

• Space Savers—Look for appliances that maximize

Herbaceous perennials are plants that die down every Fall. The roots live through the Winter underground. In the Spring, the plants put up shoots of new growth. De-pending upon the type, the plant will bloom in Spring, Summer, or Fall. Then the plants will die down again for the Winter. These plants are cold hardy and return every year.

Full sun for gardening is at least six (6) hours per day. Here in the Lower South, we may need protection for some plants where there is a western exposure in the heat of our afternoons. Temperature and humidity also may adversely affect some perennials.

Some good choices for sun are: Amsonia (Blue Star Flower); Bee-Balm: Liatcis (Blaz-ing Star); Balloon Flower; Artemisia; Butterfly Weed; Peony; Iris (Bearded); Daylillies; Aster; Chrysanthemum; Coreopsis, Coneflower; Shasta Daisy; Sedum; Thrift; Rudbeck-ia; Yarrow; Lamb’s Ears; Baptisia, Candy tuft; Ice plant, Swamp Sunflower (likes mois-ture); Dianthus (Pinks/Sweet William); Ageratum; Blanket Flower; “Miss Huff” Lantana (tender); Joe-Pye Weed (moisture); Yucca; ‘Homestead Purple’ Verbena.

Perennials need good, healthy, well-drained soil and good air circulation, as well as enough water, to be healthy plants. Once established, they should not need as much wa-tering and very little fertilizer to do well. The best time to divide and plant is Fall (early) or Spring (late).

Trick or Treat?Reader’s Digest readers …

Private PartyIt was Halloween night when a driver called our road-service dispatch office complaining that he

was locked out of his car. I forwarded the informa-tion to a locksmith, along with one more detail:

The car was parked at a nudist colony. Of course, the locksmith arrived in record time. But when

he called in later, he wasn’t amused. “Figures,” he said. “I finally get to go to a nudist colony, and

they’re having a costume party!”-- Contributed by Neil Klein

Mummified MomLast year my daughter and her children

were invited to a Halloween party. Her older son wanted to go as Count Dracula; her daughter, as a ballerina; her younger son,

as the cabin boy in Treasure Island. Then my daughter donned her own costume, wrapping herself in strips of white sheeting.

At the party she collapsed, exhausted, on the sofa.“And who are you?” someone asked her.“I’m a tired mummy,” my daughter said.

I’ve Created a Monster! For Halloween, my grandson wanted to be “The

Incredible Hulk.” Using food coloring and a wash-cloth, my daughter dyed his hands, face, neck and

blond hair the green shade of the TV monster. After his bath the next morning, a faint green tint still remained. As my grandson was going out the door to school, he handed his mother a slip of pa-

per he had forgotten to give her earlier. My daugh-ter quickly opened the note.

School pictures were going to be taken that day.-- Contributed by Ruth H. Smith

Don’t Play With FireAs firefighters, we are required to wear our full bunker gear on all safety calls, even to advise

homeowners of a county ordinance against burn-ing leaves after dark. Last Halloween, two co-

workers waited on the porch of one such offending household, helmets in hand, until a woman finally opened the door. Promptly dropping a candy bar into each helmet, she remarked, “You boys are a little old for this sort of thing, aren’t you?” and

closed the door.-- Contributed by Steve Farmer

Outfit Over-EasyThe last thing my friend Christy was prepared for

was an invitation to a costume party. Eight and a half months pregnant, she was in no shape for any conventional costume.

Still, she wanted to go, so she painted a big yellow circle on an extra-extra-large white

T-shirt, dug a pair of red devil horns out of her kids’ Halloween junk pile ... and went as

a deviled egg.-- Contributed by Betty C. Hatcher

What’s In Your Garage?

Do you have something interesting in your garage? A Car, Motorcycle, Buggy, Airplane? E-mail a photo and a brief description [email protected]’ll publish as space permits.

The very first car Edwin Johnston owned was a 1969 Mercury Cougar. He later regretted selling it and decided to purchase that exact same car – if he could locate it. His wife, Nan, says, “I can’t tell you how many dangerous alley ways and sections of town that we have pulled into thinking he had spotted it, only to find out that it wasn’t the same car”!

Edwin finally gave up on his quest to find that “exact” car but then found the next best thing. There was a 1970 Cougar listed on Ebay in Summerville, South Carolina which was about as close to his original car as could be found. He purchased it about three years ago and began a restoration.

Edwin rebuilt the engine and suspension and renewed all other items as needed, including a “Shy Blue” paint job. The interior was in very good condition so was left original. Nan says the car “now sits in a spe-cial garage, built just for it … men”! She also thinks some of the mem-bers of Edwin’s “harem” from the old days would remember it. Names like Janet Elliott, Cheryl Morgan, Velma Maxwell, and Angie Dye.

This 1970 Mercury certainly brings back old memories for Edwin and his friends and is a pleasure to own and drive.
