The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

When I purchased the Coweta Shopper two and a half years ago, I had four goals in mind. (1) I wanted the busi-

ness to provide an income for my employees and for me. (2) I wanted to enjoy the work. (3) I wanted to honor God in the way I operate this business. (4) I wanted to provide encouragement, even if in a small way, to the people in our community. Progress toward a goal is often “two steps forward and one step back”, and I sometimes wonder what my grades would be if I received a report card from our readers.

I’m often recognized when I go into a store or restaurant. The per-son may not always remember my name but they might say, “aren’t

you that guy in The Coweta Shopper?” Just in the past couple of months, three people told me how much they enjoyed reading our “Encouraging Words” sec-tion. One lady said she cut it out and taped it to her bathroom mirror – just to get the day started off in a positive way. Another told me she brought them to her business and pinned them to the company bulletin board to share with others. A mother reported sending these quotes to her children and grandchildren in Texas. I am not the author of these quotes; I just group them into topics for the edification of our readers. I suppose that, in the fast pace of everything that’s going on in our world today, there’s nothing very profound about what three folks may read in a local publication. Yet those three people received something into their mind and spirit which may have helped them get through the day – just when they needed it. Encouragement helps people solve problems, meet challenges and move forward into the realm of possibili-ties which sometimes seem absolutely impos-sible. The Coweta Shopper is delivered to almost fifty thousand homes and businesses in Coweta County. But if no one other than these three readers were positively influenced by something we published, my report card has been marked “satisfactory!”, at least on this one goal.

So yes, I’m interested in making a living at this business, but at the same time, doing so in a way that can be interesting, informative, positive, and yes, encouraging. But I do little more than set the tone of the business (and sign the checks when there’s any money in the account). It all hap-pens because of the capable and caring people who work here, interested readers in the commu-nity, and most important, our loyal advertisers.

Joe

///////Detour///////A culvert on Wynn Road has deteriorated and created a safety hazard. Coweta County Road Department will be re-placing the old metal culvert pipes with new polymer coat-ed pipes, making the crossing wider and longer. Replac-ing these pipes will cause a portion of Wynn Road to be inaccessible for 2-3 weeks. Another access point is being completed so residents in that area will not be stranded dur-ing this time. Coweta County has obtained temporary rights of way and is building a gravel road through the wooded area at the end of Wynn Road. This temporary road will connect Wynn Road to Boy Scout Road and provide access while the road and culvert are being re-paired and replaced.

It is expected that the tempo-rary road will be complete by early next week. Once it is complete and open for use, the culvert replacement will begin. The work is expected to take 2-3 weeks, weather permitting. Once the new cul-vert is in place, the temporary road will be closed to traffic and rights of way will revert to the original owners. Coweta County thanks those owners for working with us so quickly to solve this problem.

next week’s Shopper will be mailed to the A Zone - 16,366 addresses in City of Newnan, Arbor Springs, Ashley Park, Avery Park, Country Club, Lake Hills, Lake Redwine, SummerGrove and some rural routes

What is this on your plant? Why is that plant turning a sickly pale yellow? These and many more questions are perplexing to home gardeners. Edu-cation is the best answer. The local library has a selection of books on gardening subjects. There are also films to check out in the video section. An-

other good source of up-t0-date information is the Master Gardener Program. The Backyard Association is all about gardening and plants. The meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds on Pine Road [free and open to the public]. Call 770-254-2620 for information. Of course, the ultimate source is the Coweta County Extension Service at 255 Pine Road in Newnan. The number to call is 770-254-2620. Plant nurseries carry a full line of products with knowledgeable, friendly advice.

Some of the most common pests on houseplants and outside plants are aphids, leaf-miners, Japanese beetles, mealy bugs, scale, spider-mites and thrips. Pyrethrin; Bacillus thuringi-ensis (BT) such as Dipel or Javelin; Insecticidal soaps such as Safer; Or-thene; Sevin; or Malathion are com-monly used to treat these problems. Please be aware that some of these products are toxic (or harmful) to humans, pets, birds, fish, honey bees, butterflies, or earthworms. If you choose to use them - do so with care and caution - according to directions! A good strong spraying of water frequently helps. The introduc-tion of “good bugs” such as Lady bird beetles, parasitic wasps (trichogramma), Lace wings, parasitic nematodes, and others can control most problems if caught early. Just hand-picking some pests is sufficient if done regularly.

Diseases such as powdery-mildew, grey-mold, leaf-spot, black-spot or rust should respond to the proper use of appropriate fungicides such as Sulfur, Funginex, Captan, Maneb, or Daconil. Good sanitation, good cultural practic-es, careful selection of resistant types of plants, and destroying of diseased plants are much better choices for us and the environment.

Since I don’t grow any vegetables, fruit trees, or crops, I choose to let the birds, wasps, frogs, lizards, sinks, and oth-er creatures such as spiders do their work. A balance is usually struck. Washing all plant parts with a strong spray of water works well. Good air circulation and the correct amount of light and water can work wonders. Hand-picking helps. Try beneficial insect release.

Defined RoomsOnce a seller decides to place their house on the market to sell, they may hear their Realtor say that buyer’s need to have the rooms in the house defined for them. Every-one shakes their heads up and down as if they understand what this means, but very often they don’t. What does it mean to have a room defined?

The rooms and spaces around us, are defined by what happens in them. The con-tents of the room, the layout of the furnishings and accessories — all of this plays a crucial role in how a space is perceived by a buyer.

Let’s take a formal dining room as an example. Most occupants only use a formal dining room once (maybe twice) per year. This is a great deal of square footage to waste on that little bit of use. However, they may need a home office on a much regular basis, so they sell the dining room furniture, install office furniture, a com-puter and desk supplies. The room is being put to a much better use for this oc-cupant. Once they decide to sell the house and the Realtor has listed the house as having a formal dining room, a buyer expects to see this in the MLS photos as well as when they view the house in person.

If the buyer sees the photo on the right online, they aren’t seeing this room used as a dining room and they may dismiss this house from their list of “must see” houses. This house has lost the opportu-nity to attract a buyer before it can even be considered because the “room was not defined” as intended. It can be dif-ficult for home buyers to envision what a space can become without a little help.

Sellers will often ask, “can’t they see past how we use the room and see that it could be a dining room?” The answer to that question is … only 10% of buyers CAN visual-ize a space as its intended use. That means that 90% of buyers CAN NOT visualize

this room as a formal dining room. Is that a risk you are willing to take, as a seller?

Now a buyer can look at a photo of this room on the left and see that it is indeed a formal dining room and put this property on their “must see” list.

STUDEBAKER PICK-UP TRUCKBy Bob Spruck MotorMouth/south

Many of our younger car enthusiasts (there are some, aren’t there?) may never have seen a Studebaker or may never have even heard the name. The Studebaker brothers who started in business by madeing wagons, stagecoaches and wheel barrows for the Gold Rush in the middle 1800s were one of the earliest companies to take a chance on the new-fangled conveyance called the horseless carriage. (Boy, putting it that way makes it sound like such a long time ago. It also makes me feel almost as old as our publisher, Joe Williams). Their great success in making Conestoga wagons and prairie schooners as well as ammo carriers in WWI encouraged them to consider this new and unproven thing called the auto-mobile. As their designs and product evolved with the new industry, they continued to rely on their proven concepts of utilitarianism and quality. After WWII, in order to stay in business, they and the other automobile manufacturers had to innovate even more quickly than before as a new society, a new culture, and a new economy with different expectations, broader needs and fancier desires.

Studebaker answered this call by continuing their conservative designs and emphasis on strength and sturdiness until the market went in another direction where innova-tion and creature comforts like plush interiors, powerful engines, colors other than black, and a new thing called styling became paramount. Even though Studebaker and other car manufacturers like Packard, Kaiser, Willys, and Hudson had good prod-ucts, the “Big Three”, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler set the standard for the new generation and succeeded where the others eventually failed. Studebaker gave it a gallant try and lasted longer than most of the others, mostly because they empha-sized styling and led the way with many of the early innovations that later became standards in the industry. Studebaker was one of the earliest users of outside styling consultants, retaining Raymond Loewy Associates, one of the most popular and suc-cessful industrial designers of the twentieth century. They closed their main produc-tion facilities in South Bend, Indiana in 1963.

One of these was the idea that the utilitarian heavy duty pick-up truck, previously rel-egated to the farm or small business, could be as stylish and comfortable as the lat-est sedans were. Using their very successful Lark model, Studebaker combined the stylish front end of the sedan with the utilitarian bed of their bigger truck products

What’s In Your Garage?

and produced the Studebaker Champ truck you see here. Over a lifespan from 1960 to 1964 they were available with a variety of six cylinder and eight cylinder engines, and three and four speed manual transmissions, some shifted from the steering column and others from the floor. One of the Studebaker innovations that lasted was the slid-ing rear window, offered as an option since they did not provide air conditioning in their trucks.

ROAD TO RECOVERYIt Is Hard Enough To Have Cancer ~

Volunteer Drivers Needed In Coweta County

If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based pro-gram provides free transportation to cancer pa-tients to and from their treatment locations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.

Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Require-ments include a good driving record, a valid driv-er’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.

Join this meaningful program and make some-one’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more information on becoming a volunteer driver, please contact your Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

comprehensive services and programs to anyone affected by cancer at any phase in his or her cancer journey, regardless of whether or not they are a Piedmont patient. Below you’ll find the class schedule for Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Newnan Hospital as well as some informa-tion about the new patient navigator Stephanie Martin, RN, whose primary responsibility will be to guide cancer patients through their continuum of care. She will likely begin her new role at Piedmont Newnan mid-September.

The professionally-led programs that will be offered at Piedmont Newnan starting this fall are:

One Hour Drummer: Wellness Rhythms ~ Oct. 31, Nov. 28 & Dec. 19 (all Wednesdays) from 10 to 11 a.m. at The Summit, Hwy 34, in the former pharmacy space. Join in the fun playing drums and other rhythm instruments. No prior musical experience necessary. Facilitated by Peter Marino, President, One Hour Drummer.

Super Foods for Cancer ~ Tuesday, November 6 from noon to 2 p.m. It’s time to multi-task! There are foods that provide multiple disease-fighting nutrients, fill you up so you can enjoy plenty of food without excess calories, and are easy to include in everyday meals. They are called Super foods, and they are super easy to fit into your cancer fighting eating plan. Join Chef Lana Carr and Cancer Wellness dietitian, Taryn Tennyson, as they explore the amazing health benefits of these superstar foods that go far beyond their basic nutritional value. Embrace your health, not just fight cancer, with these vibrant and unique super foods! Registration is required for all cooking demonstrations. Please call 770-719-5860.

Also, Piedmont Newnan has hired a patient navigator as part of the expanded Cancer Center services being offered. Stephanie Martin, RN will be primarily responsible for guiding breast cancer patients through their continuum of care. Her position was created as a result of a generous donation from an Atlanta family who wanted to see the Cancer Wellness services expanded across the Piedmont Healthcare system.

For more information about Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Healthcare or to make a donation in support of the program, visit piedmont.org

Volunteers play a vital role in the support of our patients and their families. Support is given in many ways – sitting at bedside to relieve an exhausted caregiver, performing small tasks in the patient’s home,

reading to a patient, or spending time with a patient and their fam-ily as a “friendly visitor”. No special skills are needed but a passion to serve others is desired. Please call Mary at 678-817-4180 if you have questions about our program or if you would like to attend volunteer training.
