The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

I recently thought about a community project the Shopper could start and support in our community. We would place signs in the

large discount chain stores which read: “Please do not beat your chil-dren in this store or within 500 feet of the parking lot!” We could also have brochures in racks throughout the store offering a list of ways to “show restraint” while shopping with your children. Suggestions could include: “You’ll be eating off the mantel tonight”, and “You’re cruisin’ for a bruisin”, or “Boy, I’m gonna warp your frame”! The proposals must be, of course, whispered into the ear of the offending child as fu-ture reference. But please don’t tell then ten times that “I’m not going to tell you again”.

When I was a child, my mother never beat me in “J-Mart” for two reasons. Those big stores did not then exist, and if they had, we would not have had the funds to be there. But I did receive my share of discipline at home. There were 5 children in our family and my mother was in charge of the spanking. Actually, spanking was for novices – my Mom was a “Pro”, handing out sentences which really got my attention. She kept a belt hanging on a nail, attached to the door casing, which could be “placed into action” at a moments notice. Momma had two styles of “whippings”, as we called them: “individual” and “wholesale”. The individ-ual method was used when she had time enough to “seek and destroy”. She would hold me by the arm and apply that belt to my backside, and as I tried to run, we just went around in a circle. If I ran fast enough, the belt couldn’t pick up the necessary speed to make much of an impact, and after a minute or so, we were so winded we both just sat down and laughed. A little music added to this “demonstration of discipline” would have been quite entertaining! The “wholesale” method was used on my siblings and me when at least 3 of us were in a fuss or fight together. She would enter the room with that belt fly-ing - from left to right in a wide arch, “meeting the needs” of all in its’ path! We eventually learned to scatter in different directions causing her to seek a single target, then changing back to her “individual” method, referred to earlier, before perusing the remaining offend-ers. There were usually outcries of innocence, and phrases like, “she did it, or, it wasn’t my fault”! But it didn’t help. We were considered guilty as charged until punishment could be administered. No discussion!

So, although we had our share of discipline, we children were able to survive long enough to grow up and leave home in one piece and without too many scars. We also learned to re-spect authority. Although the above description is true (but perhaps partially embellished), our mother, “Miss Daisy”, loved us very much and always put our needs before hers. What more could we have asked.

JoePost script: The Mansour brothers used to call me “the seatless wonder” when measuring

me for trousers, and my momma said it looked like a family had “moved out” of the back of my pants. It’s because my backside was “corrected” so many times; it became “deflated” like a flat tire, and never grew in proportion to my height!

(Post) Post script: Inasmuch as my little sister wasn’t born until I was in high school, she knows nothing, whatsoever, about this matter and is unable to corroborate my story.

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Sandra Johnson is a local, self taught artist who began painting about three years ago after visiting the High Museum

with her daughters. After years of saying, “I wish I could paint,” she just decided to start. So with a basic set of paints,

a few canvases and a child’s easel found at a garage sale, Sandra gave it a try. She’s been painting ever since and it has

certainly become a passion for her.

Sandra loves to experiment and has done work in oils, pastels, collage and acrylics. Her medium of choice is,

however, acrylics because they dry quickly and are very versatile. Sandra has done still life, landscapes and abstracts.

Currently, she is exploring the “many faces of women” using acrylics and collage.

Completely by accident, Sandra, after going to a workshop on water colors, tried the techniques learned at the work-

shop in the “Paint” program on her computer. After playing with images, she came up with her ‘Puter People.’ She

states that they exist in cyber space and are purely energy. While having no faces they express their personalities through

their bright clothing and exotic hair styles. Subjects range from tiny ballerinas to chefs to “just the guys.”

Sandra lives in Newnan with her husband, David, and their spoiled rotten English Bulldog, Sophie. She is currently

studying with Myra Harden, who has been a terrific encourager and inspiration to her. Sandra received a Merchant’s

Choice Award for a painting displayed at Espresso Lane in Newnan. Sandra will be exhibiting works at NCAA functions

and at local sites.

The Newnan-Coweta Art Association. NCAA meets the third Thursday each month (from September through May) at

the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7:00 p.m. Visitors and new members are welcome. An art demon-

stration is presented each month. Come and join the fun!

Sandra Johnson is NCAA November Artist of the Month

SasanquasFall is the perfect time to plant shrubs. Sasanquas are perfect Fall

shrubs! They come in a variety of heights. They bloom between Sep-tember and December — usually (most) in October and November. Sasanquas have small, glossy, dark to medium green leaves and are evergreen shrubs. Their flowers are smaller than Camellia japonica or Camellia reticulata. However, they do have some advantages over the others, as they are able to tolerate more sun and drier soil. They are also not quite as fussy about the type of soil. They’re more cold toler-ant.

Camellia sasanquas grow from about five feet to fifteen feet and either spreading or up-right depending upon the variety chosen and how they are pruned or trained. They can be used as a small tree (at maturity), up-right specimen shrub, bushy hedge, loose spreading hedge, or pruned and trained as an es-palier. ‘Sparking Burgundy’ is an early blooming, lavender/rose, peony form; and can be used as a loose, spreading hedge.

Sasanquas can also be planted in containers. ‘Mine-no-yuki’ bloom midseason with small white blossoms. It is excellent to train as an espalier. ‘Jean May’ is a popular, hardy, shell pink with rose-form blooms. ‘Maiden’s Blush’ is an early, blooming delicate pink single that makes a lovely specimen shrub. And then there is ‘Yuletide’ a small, single, orange-red bloom on a plant of compact growth with late bloom time. There are many other named varieties available for early, mid, or late blooms.

Sasanquas prefer an acid soil of about 5.5 to 6.5pH. They do best in partial shade, but may do alright in North facing sun. They like moist (not wet) well-drained loamy soil. You can use a special fertilizer for them or 10-10-10. Al-ways follow directions and water. Sasanquas are shallow -rooted plants and mulching helps keep the roots cool, protected and moist. Dig a hole the same depth as the root ball and tow to three times the diameter. Plant high and add compost. Keep well-watered two yeas until es-tablished.

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Latin, spoken in ancient Rome, is considered a dead language in today’s world, but the Latin influence is evident in the field of law. Ancient Rome’s legal system has a strong influence on the legal system of most western countries. Latin phrases in the law are used in isolation as technical terms. Today’s article will explore some common Latin legal terms that you may well know and some less obscure words and phrases.

While watching detective shows you have definitely come across the terms alias and alibi. The Latin word alias, means “otherwise known as”, and alibi means “elsewhere”. When you sign a statement made un-der oath you are signing an affidavit. When in court you have most likely heard people who are representing themselves without an attorney being called a pro se plaintiff or defendant. Also the term pro bono means work done for free for the public good. When appearing in criminal court if you do not wish to contest your speeding ticket, you can enter a no contest or nolo contendre plea.

As attorneys we use many other Latin terms that might not be as familiar to the public. When we ask a judge to review a matter in camera it liter-ally means “in a chamber”. We are asking the judge to review evidence in his private chamber. When you file a habeas corpus petition you are filing a motion to bring a person before a court. A common Latin term used by attorneys is prima facie, or “at first sight”, which means it is evidence without proof. Purchaser’s have used the term caveat emptor meaning “let the buyer beware”. Res ipsa loquitur is a Lain phrase meaning that “it goes without saying. This phrase is commonly used in cases of commercial airplane accidents.

Although Latin is only spoken occasionally in Rome, its phrases are alive and well in our every day law.

“Although dogs have fur coats, they still need our help to keep them warm in the winter. Please help Georgia Heartland Humane Society in their efforts to identify dogs needing that help. If you have a dog that needs a dog house … or the dog house you have doesn’t provide enough protec-tion from the weather, please contact Georgia Heartland. As well, if you know of any dog in need, let us know about him/her as well. Please call our hotline (770-830-2820) and leave your name and number. All information is strictly confidential. We will return your call as soon as possible. You can also email us at gaheart-

[email protected] and please place Doghouses in the subject line.

If you have a doghouse that you no longer need, please consider donating it to Georgia Heartland Humane Society. Due to limited transporta-tion resources, we are not able to receive large wooden doghouses. One of the best materials to place in a dog house to help a dog retain warm, is wheat straw. Clothing or man made materials draw moisture from the air and retain dampness within the doghouse. If you would like to do-nate wheat straw to place in the doghouses, that would be wonderful. Thank you for helping.”

3 AreasTo Tidy When Selling

Your HomeMost home sellers think

that once they have tackled the curb appeal and the inte-rior of their house, that they can sit back and relax while their agent gets on with the process of marketing their house.

However, there are a few more places that may need some attention that can be easy to forget or ignore … closets, cabinets and garages.

It’s not unusual to have closets filled with linens, cloth-ing and toys, or to have a garage filled with rickety old furniture, old paint cans, sports equipment, spider webs, dead bugs, and then kitchen and bath cabinets containing expired medicines, beauty products and multiple contain-ers of half filled cleaning products.

One thing that you don’t want to do, is use these spaces to “hide” all your extra belongings that you removed while preparing your interior to showcase, hoping that a buyer won’t open these doors. When a buyer looks at a house, they will open closets, cabinets and go into the garage. Buyers like to see plenty of open space and feel like there is adequate storage in each of these areas. They need to see air around the stacks of linens, under the cabinets and feel like they can park their cars into the garage without tripping over toys and tools.

So, roll up your sleeves and finish this last project …

Closets• : Go through your closets, and remove un-used, worn out and out dated items. Donate them to charity, pre-pack them to move or throw them away. Neatly refold linens, corral toys into baskets and bins, and change your hangers to all one type. If your budget will allow, use wooden hangers. If not then purchase the best quality plastic hang-ers that you can afford and be sure that you have your clothes hanging by color, shirts and blouses all facing the same way with like things together, exp. all shirts together, slacks together, etc.

Cabinets• : Sit in the floor of your kitchen and bathrooms and completely empty the contents. Through away outdated medicines, cosmetics and beauty items. Reduce the contents to only the basic items needed on a daily basis. Thor-oughly clean the bottom of the cabinets and repaint or cover with shelf liner

so that they look brand new. Repack the cabinet by using baskets and bins for your personal items. Place like things together. Medicine in one bin, cosmetics in another, etc. Be sure there is plenty of space be-tween bins.

Garage• : There are some basic things the sellers can do to make the space more appealing to potential buyers. De-clutter the garage. Make the elusive dream of an orderly space a reality. On a beautiful,

clear day, completely empty the space. Sweep down the cob webs, remove the dead bugs and clean the floors. Put a fresh coat of paint on the walls and paint the garage floor with concrete floor paint. It will make a HUGE difference in the way the space looks. Once this is dry, start bringing only the necessary items back into the garage, keeping the floors uncluttered. Use shelving, old dressers, or hooks and pegs to keep like things together. Don’t forget about using boxes, baskets and bins with labels to store your small items. Be sure that your garage door buttons are clean and that the doors are well oiled and don’t squeak when raised.

An organized, tidy garage lets a buyer know that your home has been well-maintained, and while the garage usually isn’t a deal breaker in a sale, sprucing it up is a great idea.

NuLink Supports Coweta County School System

CEO presents check to aid athletic departments

Newnan, Georgia. November 2, 2011—NuLink CEO Dan Shoemaker made a special presentation to Dr. Marc Guy, Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services of the Coweta County School System, today to support the athletic departments at Newnan, East Coweta and Northgate High Schools. The check is part of a promo-tion the local cable provider ran from August through mid October where it donat-ed $20 to a local high school for every customer that signed up for a new service. Each new customer was asked to designate which school would receive the funds.

“Today we are proud to present this check for $10,540 dollars to Coweta County Schools to support their athletic departments,” said Shoemaker. “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to give back to our community. It was amazing to see the tremendous outpouring of school support from more than 500 new and upgraded subscribers.”

The money raised from the NuLink promotion will be distributed to the three high school’s athletic departments. According to Dr. Guy, “These funds will go to good use supporting our athletic departments. We are truly grateful to NuLink for in-cluding us in this promotion as well as their customers who chose a school to sup-port. This is a perfect example of how businesses and the community can work together.”

NuLink is Coweta County’s leading provider of video, high-speed Internet and phone services for residential and business customers. For more information on NuLink visit www.nulinkdigital.com or call 770-683-6988.
