Call to Worship

O people, praise our God the Artist of creation, the Lord of heaven and earth. We worship our Maker with resounding praise! In God we live and move and have our being; it is the Lord who gives us life and breath. God has kept us among the living and not let our feet slip. God formed all people to seek the Lord; indeed, our Creator is never far away. Bless the Lord, who is faithful to us! Let us worship the God of Spirit and Life!

Hymn 139 Come, Thou Almighty King ITALIAN HYMN

MUSIC NOTES The Anthem of Dedication by Warren Martin — a graduate of and later a faculty member at Westminster Choir College — has been performed regularly at Westminster’s commencement each year. The text is fitting not only for new graduates whom we celebrate this month, but also for those beginning and renewing service to God through the Church of the Covenant. Martin transforms Peter’s thrice-denial of Christ, into a threefold affirmation of commitment. New graduates, or in today’s context new and returning officers, are asked three times: Whom shall we send? And who will go for us? The answer is a resounding HERE AM I, LORD, SEND ME. You can see this dialogue transpire in the beauty of Princeton University Chapel in the performance recorded live in 2014. Drs. Hongo and Peters are both graduates of WCC.

Call to Confession Anne Wombwell deConingh,

Lay Worship Leader

Corporate Prayer of Confession

Holy God, we hunger to worship together in our lovely Covenant sanctuary and are grateful that the miracle of the internet allows us at least virtual congregation; but it’s not the same. Daily we learn of more dire COVID-19 statistics, worry about our families and friends, despair at our weakened economy, and wonder where you are! In our heart of hearts, we know your spirit is always with us and in us; you have not forsaken us. Please recognize our frailties and grant us your forgiveness as we silently confess our sin.

Silent Confession of Sins Declaration of Forgiveness

Hear the good news! If we confess our sin, God is faithful and just, forgiving and transforming our lives. Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Gloria Patri Hymn 579

Glory be to the Father** and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. **or Maker

Prayers of the People Deacon Erin Tomko

Includes ringing of the Prayer Bell for those impacted by gun violence.

The Spirit. Written by William Loader.

O God, You are Spirit; You are wind; You are breath.

You meet us in the wonders of creation, in the awe of wonderful things, in the terror of fearful things. You blow among the fallen leaves, the broken branches, the whining pain and the whirlwinds of delight.

Your wind gently touches our brow with comfort and caress; your forgiveness raises us to life; your challenge disturbs our tidy piles and spreads opportunities before our eyes.

Gentle Spirit, breathe on us your life. Strong Spirit, open our closed doors to your compassion; Universal Spirit, inspire us to sing and sigh for justice; Spirit of Jesus, teach us to walk, to work, to pray, to live, to love, your way.

Loving God, surround us and all people with your compassionate arms. As our world is under attack From an invisible virus, help us to Make it through each day. We ask especially for those who Individually and corporately suffer From gun violence. By the tolling of the bell, we remember Those affected by violence with guns.

Awaken our dreams, expand our visions, heal us for hope, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hear us now, O God, as we join together in the prayer that your Son and our Savior taught us to say. Our Father..

The Lord's Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.

Congregational Amen

All are invited to sing.

Invitation to Offering

Offertory Westminster Choir College students, directed by Joe Miller Anthem of Dedication Warren Martin

Whom shall we send? And who will go for us?

HERE AM I, LORD, SEND ME.

God is working His purpose out as year succeeds to year;

God is working His purpose out and the time is drawing near;

Nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be,

When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.

What can we do to work God’s work, to prosper and increase

The brotherhood of all mankind, the reign of the Prince of Peace?

What can we do to hasten the time, the time that shall surely be,

When the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea?

March we forth in the strength of God with the banner of Christ unfurled,

That the light of the glorious gospel of truth may shine throughout the world;

Fight we the fight with sorrow and sin, to set their captives free,

That the earth may be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.

Whom shall we send? And who will go for us?

HERE AM I, LORD, SEND ME.

Take my life, and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;

Take my moments and my days, Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my lips, and let them be Filled with messages from Thee,

Take my voice, and let me sing Always, only, for my King.

Take my hands, and let them move At the impulse of Thy love;

Take me feet, and let them be Swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my will, and make it Thine: It shall be no longer mine.

Take my heart; it is Thine own: It shall be Thy royal throne.

Take my love; my Lord, I pour At Thy feet its treasure-store.

Take myself, and I will be Ever, only, all for Thee.

Whom shall we send? And who will go for us?

HERE AM I, LORD, SEND ME.

O Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end;

Be Thou forever near me, My Master and my Friend;

I shall not fear the battle If Thou art by my side,

Nor wander from the pathway If Thou wilt be my guide.

O Jesus, Thou has promised To all who follow Thee,

That where Thou art in glory There shall Thy servant be;

And, Jesus, I have promised To serve Thee to the end;

O give me grace to follow, My Master and my Friend. Amen.

Litany for Ordination and Installation Rev. Medina

There are varieties of gifts, but it is the same Spirit who gives them.

There are different ways of serving God, but it is the same Lord who is served.

God works through each person in a unique way, but it is God’s purpose

that is accomplished.

To each is given a gift of the Spirit to be used for the common good.

Together we are the body of Christ, and individually members of it.

Update on Jean Sacatsh

Jean Sacatsh will turn 91 on May 18th. Judson Park, where Jean lives, has been closed to visitors since March 11th, so I thought it would be nice if any church members who know Jean could send her a card or note to wish her a Happy Birthday! Jean is doing OK. When I last asked Judson about Jean, they said she was sitting by the window enjoying the sunshine. Her address is: Jean Sacatsh, Judson Park, Reinberger, Room 22, 2181 Ambleside Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44106. Jean’s friend and former neighbor, Jeanette Throne.

Food Pantry Update From Ministry of Service

Session has approved the limited operation of the church's food pantry during the building closure. However, we cannot accept food donations at this time. You can support this important ministry by making a monetary donation to the COTC hunger fund. Your generosity will help those in our neighborhood who are hungry and need help during this pandemic. Thank you!

You are welcome to contact him at [email protected] or his cellphone at 269-303-2205. Thank you.

Bread For The World Letters To Congress

This year’s focus is on helping children escape malnutrition and get the nutrition they need. Congress should increase funding for the Summer EBT program so more children have access to food during the summer months-the hungriest time of the year for children. Realizing that most congregations are not gathering for worship on Sundays, BFW has set up a way that you can stay at home and write a letter to Congress On Line. The link (shown below) is for use for all Ohio OL writing. This link allows BFW to track how many people write letters and is a verified system that Congress views as valid. The link will send an email directly to someone’s member of Congress and both Senators. https://bit.ly/2V2oStw

Thank you to Laura VanDale the Hunger Action Advocate for Presbytery for the on line information.

COMING SOON: Resources for Remote Worship and Fellowship

Are you looking for devotional or prayer ideas to nourish your faith formation? The Ministry of Faith Formation will be collecting ideas for online resources to nourish spirits and help remind us that we are always connected through our faith in Christ. A new link on the Covenant website will be available the week of May 18th!

If you need some help accessing technology to engage with one another, please send us an email at [email protected]. MoFF members are ready and willing to help with technology access or challenges so that we can still fellowship from the comfort of our homes.
