THE COURIER

The luminaria has been a long-standing tradition in the Colonial Hills community. For almost 20 years luminaria have been displayed during the Christmas season, usually on Christmas Eve. After poor luminaria participation on Christmas Eve in 1989 the Civic Association surveyed Colonial Hill's residents during the membership drive in 1990 to determine if residents preferred to display the luminaria on Christmas Eve or on the Sunday before Christmas Eve. The majority of people surveyed preferred to display luminaria on the Sunday before Christmas. Many people said they were involved in activities on Christmas Eve and couldn't participate on that evening. As a result of that survey the luminaria date has been the Sunday before Christmas since 1990. Participation has been as good or better since the change and more people have the opportunity to participate. The trustees of the Civic Association have voted to continue with the Sunday display date this year.

The trustees of the Civic Association hope that the luminaria tradition can continue in Colonial Hills. We hope that on one day of the year, all members of the community can put aside their differences and come together in a symbolic gesture which captures the spirit of the season, lighting one small candle. By participating in the luminaria, we hope to show that people's differences are not so important as their similarities. We hope that our community can demonstrate to the world the true spirit of the season, peace and good will to all on earth.

This year's Christmas holiday decorating contest will be held on Friday December 18 from 6-9 P.M .. As in past year's, several impartial judges who are not residents of Colonial Hills will view and rate decorated homes. The rules for this year's contest are:

1. This contest is just for fun. Anyone caught taking this too seriously will be publicly flogged with a string of popcorn.

2. There will be 2 categories, overall decorations and decorated doors. The door category was included to allow everyone to participate, regardless of budget or physical ability.

3. One house cannot win both categories.

4. For both categories, prizes will be awarded. First place-$15 Second place-$10 Third place-honorable mention.

5. The judging will take place at night. Decorate accordingly.

6. Last year's first place winners are not eligible for first or second place this year. Sorry, Kevin & Kim Jeffers and Steve & Jill Wallace.

7. Winners will be announced in the local papers before New Year's Day and in the January Courier, and possibly on the new Selby Park sign if we can find somebody to paint the names during Christmas week.
