THE COUNTRY OF ENDLESS DISCOVERY

A land of endless wonders, unspoilt by modern tourism and s ll retaining its authen c character – Georgia. Once experienced, it will stay with you forever. Exploring Georgia is a constant pleasure. For walkers and hikers the country is sheer heaven, while botanists and bird-watchers will be simply enthralled and archaeologists can’t decide which of the numerous ancient fi ndings to visit fi rst. With the towering Caucasus Mountains forming the border between Europe and Asia, Georgia has long been an important contact zone – part of the Great Silk Road. In this mys cal land you will be cap vated by a thrilling blend of eastern enigma and western elegance. The tradi ons of the East and West meet in Georgia to form a culture unlike any other in the world.

The following legend adequately describes Georgia’s great natural beauty: When God appor oned the Earth to all the peoples of the world, the Georgians arrived late. The Lord asked them why they were tardy. The Georgians replied that they had stopped on the way to drink and raise their glasses in praise of Him. GREAT CAUCASUS THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN RANGE IN EUROPEStretching over for about 1200km between the Black and the Caspian seas the Caucasus Mountain Range is considered a natural boundary between

Europe and Asia. This is where you fi nd summits over 5000m, including Mt. Elbrus (5642m) – the highest in Europe. Georgia has several peaks over 5000m among them – Mt. Shkhara (5068m), Mt. Janga (5059m), Mt. Kazbegi (5047m) where according to the Greek myth Prometheus was chained.

The Highest Village of Europe – Ushguli At 2200m Ushguli is the highest permanently inhabited se lement in Europe. The village of about 200 people is located in Upper Svane region, at the foot of Mt. Shkhara (5068m) – one of the highest summits of the Great Caucasus. Do ed with medieval Svane an watchtowers Ushguli is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

LAND OF THE GOLDEN FLEECEThe fabulous kingdom of Colchis,

mighty King Aeetes, enchan ng Medea, legendary Jason and the Argonauts and invaluable Golden Fleece – an ancient Greek myth based in Georgia. Numerous gold ar facts found in the area and Tim Severin’s recreated voyage of 1984 prove that the story of the Golden Fleece could easily be true, especially considering Georgia’s centuries-old tradi on of ge ng gold par cles from fl owing mountain rivers with the help of the fl eece.

The Golden FleeceIn the kingdom of Colchis there ruled the mighty King Aeetes. Alongside with other numerous riches he possessed the Golden Fleece – the skin of a ram with the golden fleece, which he kept under the guard of a sleepless dragon. Jason and the Argonauts sailed from Iolcus on the ship “Argo” and tried to take the fleece from Colchis to enable Jason to claim his inheritance. Fortunately for Jason, King’s daughter Medea fell in love with him. Medea had magical powers (the word “medicine”

comes from her name), which she used to help Jason complete the assigned tasks and later steal the Golden Fleece.

The story of the Argonauts is a classic myth wri en by Apollonius of Rhodes in the 3rd century BC. The Golden Fleece is a symbol of cultural achievements of ancient Georgian tribes and mainly the high level of development of metal processing, gold in par cular, although ge ng par cles of gold from fl owing mountain rivers is s ll prac ced in Georgia.

ANCIENT CHRISTIAN COUNTRY Georgian people shared the Message of God in the fi rst century when the Holy Apostles Andrew the First-called, Simon the Canaanite and Ma hias preached the Gospel here, although Georgia was offi cially converted to Chris anity in 337 with the evangelism of St. Nino of Cappadocia. Being one of the world’s most ancient Chris an countries, Georgia also preserves the most holy relic – the Robe of Christ.

A SILK ROAD COUNTRYWith its favorable geographic loca on Georgia has always been a connec ng link between Europe and Asia, traversed by many routes including the famous Silk Road. This most important pre-modern trade road linking China with the West diverged into northern and southern routes, the northern one passing through Georgia. The traces of ancient caravans are s ll visible near Uplistsikhe cave town.

CRADLE OF WINEWhen it comes to wine-making, Georgia is blessed. Grapevine has been cultivated in the fertile valleys of Georgia for about 8000 years. With over 500 varieties of endemic grapes and the world’s first cultivated grapevines, the tradi ons of vi culture are entwined with the country’s na onal iden ty. It is also believed that the word “wine” is of Georgian origin (“Rvino - ghvino” in Georgian).

8,000-year-old wine unearthed in GeorgiaScien sts have discovered the world’s oldest wine – a vintage produced 8,000 years ago. The fi nd pushes back the history of wine by several hundred years. New discoveries show how Neolithic man was busy making red wine in Shulaveri (Georgia). Although no liquid wine from the period has survived, scien sts have now found and tested wine residues discovered on the inner surfaces of 8,000-year-old ceramic storage jars. - The Independent, 2003

A 3000 YEAR OLD STATEGeorgia has one of the world’s richest and oldest histories. Archaeological excava ons provide clear evidence that Georgian tribes formed their statehood as early as the second millennium BC. The remains of the fl ourishing Georgian states of Colchis and Iberia can be seen while travelling in the ancient ci es of Vani, Kutaisi and Mtskheta.

UNIQUE LANGUAGE AND SCRIPTGeorgia’s original and highly developed culture is proved by its unique language and script. Spoken by about 5 million people worldwide, Georgian language has an ancient literary tradi on. It belongs to Iberian-Caucasian language family and is a unique language having no parallels in the world languages. Georgian alphabet was created in the 3rd century BC and is one of the only 14 exis ng scripts in the world. It has 33 le ers: 5 - vowels and 28 - consonants. Georgians write from le to right. Earliest Georgian inscrip ons are found in a church near Bethlehem (AD

430) and in Bolnisi Sioni church (AD 495) in the South-East of Georgia. The earliest Georgian hagiographic novel also dates back to the 5th century AD.

HOMELAND OF THE FIRST EUROPEAN1.7-million-year-old skull found during Dmanisi archaeological excava ons is the oldest evidence of human habita on in Europe. It proves that there is almost one-million-year gap between Dmanisi and any European early-human site, making Georgia the homeland of the FIRST European.

This is the face that’s changing a thousand minds. It could be the face of the first human to leave Africa. And it’s not what anyone expected. This 1.75-million-year-old pioneer, found beneath the ruins of a medieval town called Dmanisi in the republic of Georgia, had a tiny brain – not nearly the size scientists thought our ancestors needed to migrate into a new land. And its huge canine teeth and thin brow look too apelike for an advanced hominid, the group that includes modern humans and their ancestors. Along with other fossils and tools found at the site, this skull reopens so many questions about our ancestry that one scientist muttered: “They ought to put it back in the ground.” – National Geographic Magazine

Have you been to a city where you can find Georgian Orthodox, Armenian Gregorian and Roman Catholic churches,

a synagogue, a mosque and a Zoroastrian temple all within a 5-minute walk of each other? Then you should definitely come to Georgia and visit our capital Tbilisi – a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-religious city on the crossroads of history, a city neither European nor Asian but a heady blend of both East and West.

Tbilisi was founded in the 5th century AD and has attracted visitors ever since, drawn by the hot springs for which the city is named, by the lively atmosphere of its cobbled streets and caravanserais or simply by what Alexander Dumas called the “strange, fascinating charm” of this “city of legend and romance.”

THE CITY OF HOT SPRINGSKing Vakhtang Gorgasali (AD 446-502) went hunting one day around the territory of today’s Tbilisi which was then covered with a dense forest. The King wounded a pheasant and sent his falcon in pursuit. After the long search the two birds were found boiled in hot spring. King Gorgasali was so impressed with the naturally hot sulphur water that he decided to found a city near the springs and call it Tbilisi. “Tbili” means “warm” in Georgian.

OLD TOWNTake a stroll along narrow cobbled streets, past traditional old houses with carved wooden balconies, relax in the hot waters of the historic sulphur baths, visit some of the city’s key historical sites, museums, galleries or art studios, pedestrian streets full of chic cafés where you can enjoy your coffee after wondering around the sights of Old Tbilisi.

ANCHISKHATI (6th century) is the oldest church in Tbilisi named for an invaluable icon of the Savior which was once kept here and is now on display in the Treasury of the Georgian Art Museum.

The cathedral of SIONI (7th century) is named after Mt. Zion in Jerusalem. It is considered as one of the most sacred places in the country since it houses the holy cross of St Nino, the young woman who converted Georgia to Christianity in the early 4th century.

SULPHUR BATHS“A great sense of freedom and well-being permeated me. All my tiredness had gone and I felt strong enough to lift a mountain” – Alexander Dumas, after a visit to the sulphur baths in 1858.

Fed by naturally hot mineral waters (47oC), the sulphur baths have been an essential part of Tbilisi life for centuries. The brick-domed underground baths were built in the 17th century and produce 3 million liters of water every day. To make your visit to the baths complete, make sure to take the invigorating massage.

NARIKALA FORTRESS (4th century)The fort is built on a steep hill overlooking the river and predates even the founding of the city itself. The Persian name Nari-Kala (“inaccessible fortress”) has proven apt throughout the long centuries of invasion and foreign domination, but today visitors are welcome to climb up and enjoy the superb views from the citadel walls.

RUSTAVELI AVENUE Thoroughfare of Tbilisi was laid out in the 19th century and is named after the great 12th century Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli. This busy street is now at the heart of 21st century Tbilisi. A stroll will take you past the Moorish-style opera house and the New Baroque-style Rustaveli theatre, the Russian Viceroy’s Palace and the Parliament, not to mention the cafés, restaurants and shops you can find along the way.

MUSEUMSYou can find lots of museums in Tbilisi: Museum of Arts, Museum of History, Open-Air Museum of Georgian Folk Architecture and many more, number of galleries, art studios and etc. In the museums you can find unique collection of pre-Christian gold artifacts and jewelry, collections of archaeology, history and ethnography, including the skull of the earliest inhabitant in Europe (1,7 million years old) excavated in Dmanisi archaeological site, jeweled icons, inlaid crosses and some of the finest cloisonné enamelwork, Khakhuli triptych – the largest piece of cloisonné enamel in the world, superb collection of Georgian, Russian & European paintings, original dwellings and homesteads giving us a glimpse of Georgia’s rural life and traditions.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES ► MtskhetaSituated at the confl uence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers, Mtskheta has been a site of human se lement since at least the second millennium BC. The town is named a er Mtskhetos, son of Kartlos – the legendary progenitor of the Georgian people. Already a town

of some signifi cance in pagan mes, it gained importance as the site of the fi rst Chris an church in Georgia. Today it is no longer the capital of the country, but it is s ll the spiritual capital and home to two of Georgia’s greatest churches – Sve tskhoveli and Jvari.

Jvari Monastery is located at the top of the hill and is the place where the missionary St Nino herself erected a cross (“jvari - jvari” in Georgian) in the 4th century to mark the coming of Chris anity to Georgia. Two centuries later Prince Stephanos built this tetra-conch church on the same spot.

Sve tskhoveli is the royal cathedral of Georgia, used for centuries for the corona on and burial of Georgian monarchs. More importantly, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in Georgia since the Robe of Christ is buried

here, having been brought to Georgia in the 1st century by a Jew from Mtskheta named Elias. The story tells that on his return to Mtskheta, his sister Sidonya came out to meet him and, on seeing the sacred robe, was so overcome with emo on that she clutched it to her breast and died in a state of religious ecstasy. As it was impossible to pry the robe from her grasp, it was buried with her near the confl uence of the two rivers where the 11th century cathedral is now located.

► KutaisiThe city of Kutaisi has a long and venerable history. The region has been inhabited for at least three millennia, and the city may well have been the capital of Colchis itself. More recently, Kutaisi spent a century and a half as the capital of Georgia and is today the second largest city in the country.

Bagra Cathedral (11th century) was the highest church in Georgia (57m) un l an explosion in the 17th century reduced it to picturesque ruins. Even in its ruined state, you couldn’t help but admire the stately grandeur of this lo y cathedral. (At the moment under reconstrac on)

Gela Monastery was founded in the 12th century as a monastery and academy by Georgia’s greatest king - David the Builder. In the middle ages it was the most famous centre of enlightenment and was called “The New Athos” and “The Second Jerusalem”. King David is buried in the monastery, not far from the great Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, whose stunning altar mosaic is one of the undoubted masterpieces of sacred art in Georgia.

► Upper Svane A visit to Svane region is one of Europe’s last great adventures. The highest peaks of the Great Caucasus tower at over 5000m. You’ll fi nd here excitement, breath-taking views, pris ne mountains, deep gorges,

gushing rivers… and narrow roads that are defi nitely not for the nervous driver!

Svane is a landscape of high snow-capped peaks, forested hills and spectacular valleys. Winding roads lead to hidden villages do ed with mediaeval watchtowers. There is something about the region that makes you feel as if me has stood s ll. The people of Svane are a race apart (part of ‘Kartvelian’ – Georgian tribes) - the pace of life is diff erent there, they have their own language (with no script) and tradi ons, their own architectural styles, and for them ancient customs are s ll very much a part of everyday life.

GORIThe town of Gori is located in the very heart of Georgia. Gori is known to have been besieged by the Roman general Pompey in 65 BC. The 7th-century fortress of GORIS TSIKHE s ll dominates the town. But probably Gori is best famous (or perhaps infamous) as the birthplace of one of the 20th century’s most controversial leaders - Joseph Jughashvili,

be er known as Joseph Stalin, the “Man of Steel”. Today he is s ll revered in his hometown as the greatest leader the USSR ever had, yet elsewhere his reign is regarded as an evil nightmare. In Gori you can visit Stalin Museum with the ny

house where he was born and his private bullet proof railway carriage.

UPLISTSIKHEUplistsikhe is the oldest cave town in Georgia. Back in the fi rst millennium BC it was a fl ourishing city situated on the great east-west trade route, the Silk Road. Visitors can s ll walk along the ancient streets, rock-carved theatre, royal halls, pharmacy, pagan temples and Chris an churches, while the remains of granaries and large clay wine vessels give us some clue as to the daily life of the inhabitants.

DAVID GAREJADavid Gareja Cave Monastery was founded in the 6th century by David, one of the 13 Syrian Fathers who preached Chris anity to the Georgian people. The complex is located in the semi-desert and consists of 19 monasteries. The most ancient is Lavra Monastery holding the tomb of Father David, while the painted caves of Udabno Monastery look out over a starkly

beau ful landscape of striated valleys and windswept ridges giving stunning views over to neighbouring Azerbaijan.

ALAVERDI CATHEDRALAlaverdi Cathedral was built in the 11th century. It stands in a fer le river valley, its surrounding walls silhoue ed against the backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains and enclosing the monas c refectory, wine-cellar and bath-house as well as the 17th century governor’s residence from a me when Kakhe was under Islamic rule.

TOWN OF SIGHNAGHIThe for fi ed town of Sighnaghi lies high up on the ridge overlooking the Alazani valley. The defensive walls and 23 towers were built by King Erekle II in the 18th century against the Lezgian invasion. Li le has changed here for the last 200 years. The town preserved its original image and now off ers visitors stunning views of the surrounding Caucasus Mountains.

GEORGIAN MILITARY HIGHWAYNorth of Tbilisi and up through the Caucasus to the Russian border runs the famed Georgian Military Highway, celebrated by poets and feared by military leaders over many centuries. It has served as an important link between Europe and Asia since ancient mes, though it was only a er Russia’s annexa on of east Georgia in the 19th century and the subsequent improvement of the track for troop movements that it became known as the “Military Highway”. Today it serves

as the best route via which we can enjoy the drama c scenery, crystal-clear air and indescribable grandeur of the mighty Caucasus Mountains.

ANANURI FORTRESSThe for fi ed church complex of Ananuri (17th century) is undoubtedly one of the most a rac ve sights along the Georgian Military Highway. The mirrored surface of the Zhinvali water reservoir and forested foothills of the mountains provide a picturesque backdrop for its handsome towers and ba lements.

MOUNT KAZBEGI AND GERGETI TRINITY CHURCHMount Kazbegi – in Georgian known as Mkinvartsveri (“Ice-Top”) is a perpetually snow-covered giant at 5047m, one of the highest peaks in the Great Caucasus. Kazbegi is steeped in legend: the ancient Greeks believed that Prometheus was chained to the rocky fl anks of the mountain as a punishment for stealing fi re from the Gods and giving it to mortals, while Chris an legend tells that the manger of Christ was brought to Kazbegi and is s ll hidden somewhere hereabouts. Whether you believe these legends or not, climbing the mountain is sure to be an unforge able experience.

14th century Gerge Trinity Church is set against the perpetually snowy peak of Mt Kazbegi at an al tude of 2170m. The path takes a varied route through wildfl ower meadows, deciduous woodland and conifer belts, providing a changing tapestry of fl ora and fauna as you walk up to the church from the town of Kazbegi (now called town of ‘Stephantsminda’).

VARDZIAVardzia is a huge cave complex that once consisted of some 3000 caves and could house around 50,000 people. It was built during the reign of Queen Tamar, a great ruler of 12th century Georgia. Vardzia is a place of wonders – artfully carved caves connected by long tunnels, all hewn by hand over 800 years ago, a natural cold-water spring trickling from the rock-face, beautiful frescoes still as bright as the day they were first painted. The cave town survived earthquakes and invasions and once again houses a working monastery.

KHERTVISI FORTRESSKhertvisi Fortress (10th century) had a vital role in the defense of the region since it stands above the confl uence

7

of the Mtkvari and Paravani rivers. No ma er which way the enemy invaded, they had to pass this point. Yet today the fortress s ll stands defi antly on its rocky promontory with its towers and secret tunnels and is now rather more welcoming to visitors.

ABASTUMANI OBSERVATORYThe Abastumani Observatory is the fi rst mountain observatory in the former Soviet Union located high up amongst steep hills at 1650m. Here through the powerful telescope you can clearly see the surface of the Moon and even of Saturn and Jupiter.

PROMETHEUS GROTTOKumistavi is one of Georgia’s fi nest nature reserves, known for its fabulous cave forma ons – stalac tes and stalagmites forming for thousands of years undiscovered by any human during many centuries and now open for the visitors to take a walk through the enchan ng gro o.

BATUMILying on the Black Sea Coast, close to the Turkish border Batumi is the largest city in the region and Georgia’s main port. The name is derived from the Greek “bathys limen” meaning “deep

harbour”. Its graceful white architecture and subtropical vegeta on make it unique among Georgian ci es and a magnet for foreign visitors and Georgians alike. The city is also famous for its Botanical Gardens founded in 1912 and stretching over 120 hectares. The gardens are divided into nine geographical zones harbouring over 5000 diff erent plant species brought here from all over the world.

GONIO FORTERESSGonio Fortress (1st century AD) was once a large Roman-Byzan ne military se lement and an important strategic

point along the Black Sea coast. It was occupied intermi ently by Romans, Byzan nes and O omans. More importantly it is connected with the myth of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece. This is why the famous German archaeologist Schliemann was so fascinated by the fortress and wanted to begin excava ons of the area in the 1850s, but was refused permission by the government of the Russian Tsar.

SHATILILocated at 1400m in the Arghuni river gorge Sha li is a unique mediaeval for fi ed village in the Great Caucasus Mountains. Fortresses and for fi ed dwellings cluster together to create a single chain of for fi ca on which func oned both as a residen al area and a fortress guarding the northeastern outskirts of the country.

VILLAGES OF TUSHETIOnce you travel up to Tushe you get the feeling of being in the middle of the wild universe where me has stopped and you enjoy beau ful scenery, mighty mountains of the Great Caucasus, spectacular circular views from the top of the ridges, fascina ng and remote mountainous villages with stone built splendid houses, carved balconies, narrow lanes and of course Georgian hospitality.

There has been wine in Georgia almost as long as there have been Georgians. Grapevine has been cultivated in the fertile valleys of Georgia for about 8000 years. With over 500 varieties of endemic grapes and the world’s first cultivated grapevines, the traditions of viticulture are entwined with the country’s national identity. It’s also believed that the word “wine” is of Georgian origin (“Rvino” -

“ghvino” in Georgian). All over Georgia, archeologists have found ancient wine presses and clay vessels, proving that viticulture has been practiced here at least since the 6th-5th millennia BC. Georgians have a special method of making wine in stone presses and then storing it in clay vessels sunk in the ground. Even today many houses in the country have a wine cellar - the so-called “Marani” with a wine-press and underground clay jars - “Kvevri”. Unlike the European way of wine-making that implies separation of juice from grapes after pressing, Georgians keep juice and grapes together for some time before separating them. This is what gives Georgian wine its special flavor and strength. Wine is an inseparable part of the traditional Georgian feast. At Georgian table toasts are made by a toast-master or “Tamada” and wine is drunk from a clay cup or a horn called “Kantsi”. Folk songs are also frequently sung at table. In this tour you travel to the wine-growing region of Kakheti in East Georgia and the province of Imereti where you can taste different wines. small area. The landscape of the country ranges from desert and semi-desert vegetation to luxuriant Colchic forests of moist, almost subtropical climate and high-mountain plant communities. Considerable differences both in altitude and between the climates of East and West Georgia have blessed the country with a huge variety of plant life.
