  • With this annual guide, the Heart of Virginia Buy Fresh Buy Local chapter provides a unique opportunity for consumers to connect with family farmers throughout the region. This guide was developed with the intention to build relationships between those who eat and those who farm. Why should you buy local? Well, just one of the many reasons for buying local is to develop a strong local economy. Buying local food keeps dollars circulating in your community because local family farmers often spend their money with local merchants. Research by Virginia Cooperative Extension has shown that if each household in Virginia would take the step to spend just $10 per week on local farm foods, our states economy would gain more than $1.65 billion in new income each year. For the counties listed in the Heart of Virginia guide, it would mean a direct economic impact of $48 million in new income each year. That is a small step we can all take to grow the local economy. Please, take the challenge and pledge to spend $10 a week on locally grown food. This guide will help you find exactly what youre looking for in the Heart of Virginia region!

many farmers experience profit loss due to accidental overplanting or from crops not meeting the grade standards of wholesalers and retailers. Processing produce into shelf-stable products offers an opportunity for farmers to profit off of otherwise unsellable fruits and vegetables. unlike seasonal produce, value-added products can be marketed throughout the year. These products are also great opportunities for farms to broaden their consumer base. Prince Edward County observed the lack of value-added food infrastructure and, with support of the Tobacco indemnification and community revitalization commission, upgraded their Cannery for commercial food production in an effort to promote agribusiness. The Cannery is available for hourly rental at competitive rates and assistance is available from the non-profit organization Virginia Food Works at every step of the food production process. Virginia Food Works offers help on a variety of subjects from explaining regulations, developing labels, operating the facilitys equipment and sourcing ingredients. The processing facility and equipment are designed for the production of shelf stable foods and areavailable year round to all Virginians. specialty food producers are welcome.

For more information contact Virginia Food Works at (434) 960-8958 and [email protected] or reach out to your local Extension Agency.
