Nominations for the position of Commission Chair for 2020 were called for three times. Claus Larsen was nominated. Moved by Richard Rolke, seconded by Kevin O’Brien:
THAT Claus Larsen be elected Commission Chair for 2020. CARRIED.

THAT the minutes of the Tourism Commission meeting held Wednesday, December 18, 2019 be adopted. CARRIED.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
NORTH OKANAGAN CYCLING SOCIETY
At the November 20, 2019 meeting, the North Okanagan Cycling Society provided a presentation on current status of their cycling group. A further meeting was held in the afternoon of December 18, 2019. Land was identified near Ellison Park that is privately owned but needed for trail continuity. A decision is expected to be made in February, more information to follow.

2020 MUNICIPAL & REGIONAL DISTRICT TAX ONE YEAR TACTICAL PLAN
The revised Tactical Plan was sent out to the Commission for review. Once adopted by the Commission, Plan will go to Council for endorsement. The Five Year Plan will be sent out to the Commission.
Moved by Dauna Kennedy, seconded by Kevin O’Brien: THAT the Tourism Commission endorse the 2020 Tactical Marketing Plan and Budget as presented at the January 15, 2020 Tourism Commission meeting. CARRIED.
IMPORTANCE OF TOURISM FOR VERNON AND COMMUNITY – JANUARY 202 PRESENTATION TO COUNCIL
Marketing Group member, Claus Larsen, will be making a presentation to Council at the January 27, 2020 meeting, 1:30 pm Regular Meeting.
REMINDER – GROW WITH GOOGLE WORKSHOP ON FEBRUARY 20, 2020
The Commission was reminded of the ‘Grow with Google Workshop’ scheduled for February 20, 2020 in partnership with the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association.
WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS
The World Travel Awards are being planned with local tour development and event support. Are there any ideas for activities that showcase Vernon for entertainment at the awards ceremonies? The Commission had the following input:
Awards event to occur October 14 -16, 2020 Extensive documented requirements and set-up Predator Ridge is hosting World Travel Awards in Canada for the
first time ever More details to follow for the next meeting. Would like to have some Indigenous events Travel Awards will be in Canada for the next three years 250 – 300 expected attendees at the Gala event on October 15,
2020 Tourism Coordinator will be reaching out to partners for
events/experiences to showcase Vernon Tourism Vernon will contribute but is not responsible for financial
requirements, that remains with Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association

UPDATE ON TOURISM VERNON OPEN HOUSE
The Open House is scheduled for February 18, 2020 1 -4 pm If you would like to request a table, please contact [email protected]. The Commission had the following input:

There will be a presentation at the February meeting by the Manager, Economic Dev & Tourism
Six planned Break-out sessions All partners encouraged to attend as it is a great networking
opportunity Key Note Speaker will be Diedre Campbell Name tags will be made up for Tourism Commission members.
NEW BUSINESS
POSSIBLE PARTNERSHIP WITH DISCTRICT OF COLDSTREAM/SILVER STAR RESORT
At the January 13, 2020 Regular Council Meeting, Council requested that the Tourism Commission Bylaw be amended to include a representative from Silver Star Resort. The following input was received from the Commission:
Funding structure – by MRDT and cash contribution by City of Vernon, it is identified in the five year strategy to approach District of Coldstream.
Memo to be brought back to Commission in February suggesting a partnership with District of Coldstream and the Electoral areas
Silver Star is looking at collecting a separate MRDT Council has recommended a change to the Tourism Bylaw to
include a non-voting position from Silver Star Mountain Resort on the Commission
New team at Silver Star is very community oriented and values sustainability.
50/50 MARKETING COOP & SMALL ACCOMMODATORS FUNDING REQUESTS
Vernon has a co-op marketing plan that focuses on contributing 50% to marketing. Currently over-subscribed although not all dollars have been awarded. The following points were noted:
Looking at changing policy to have two intakes – April and October
Applications will be coming back to the February meeting for the Commission to vote on
Very encouraging that partners are coming forward to apply Initiative focuses on areas outside the Thompson Okanagan Commission may need to look at increasing the amount as there
has been a great deal of interest.

The Tourism Sentiment Index is in process of being reviewed and will be sent out for the Commission’s review for February or March meeting.
PRE-GO MEDIA FAM – FEARLESS FEMALES
A ‘pre-tour’ has been scheduled before event on September 7 – 9, 2020 that highlights women making a name for themselves in the BC Win & Food Scene. Secured so far:
Missy Dobernigg – BX Press Cidery Loretta Friedrich – Okanagan Foodie Tours – Vernon Carolyne Grant – Hot Bread Shoppe Sonia Martinez – Okanagan Spirits Chef from Bamboo Beach Fusion

PRO-AM GOLF SHOW FILMING
There will be filming of two episodes May 22 – 24, 2020. Location has not been determined, details to be sent out to Commission when available.
SOCIALITY EVENT Currently working with private contractor to hold an Influencer Event in Vernon for 100 – 150 social media and content generators. Goal is to create some off-site experiences for attendees. Event tentatively scheduled for July.
