Over the past year or so I’m sure you’ve noticed a number of improvements to the patio. We’ve laced the trees, removed a couple that were failing to thrive, installed the fountain, and removed the walkway cover before it came down on its own. This year the trustees have been working on improving patio lighting for evening events, and with a gift of $10,000 from the preschool Parents Committee, we’ll be installing decorative lighting in the branches of the trees (the lights aren’t expensive, but wiring them is!). We’re also planning to re-do the steps from the patio up to the upper parking lot, to make them both shallower and wider. We believe this will make them safer both for children and grownups. And when the lighting is all done, Jim Showalter and Bill Bails have designed beautiful new seating to go around the trees.

We’ve also been talking about the addition of some new stained glass in the sanctuary. The proposal, which came from a church member a couple of years ago, was to install some new windows in the lower half of the upper part of the side windows (got that?). There’s a large beam which runs the length of the side walls on each side, and these would go just above the beam. There’d still be lots of natural light coming in through the large windows below, as well as above the new windows. We’ve been in discussion with the company which installed the original widows at the front of the sanctuary, and we’re now beginning to talk about actual design choices.

So we need your input! Bonni Ying from trustees, Doug Kemps, who helped with the original interior design choices, Jan Johnson, worship chair, and yours truly make up the task force. You can speak to any of us, or email me at the church office with your thoughts. We are currently thinking that these would portray some of the congregation’s favorite stories of Jesus. From the blessing of the children, to the feeding of the multitude, to the Prodigal Son or the Good Samaritan, we are guessing that we have plenty to choose from. You may have other ideas or suggestions. We would expect them to be done in the same style as the current windows, so that the design is consistent with the beautiful windows we already enjoy.

I hope that you are having a wonderful summer, and look forward to God’s leading in the months and years to come. Grace and peace,

The 2007-2008 Sunday School Year is Just Around the Corner! We Would Love for You to be Part of It!

We are about to complete our first year of the “One Sunday, Once a Month” Sunday School volunteer program, and it has been a success! Current teachers say it is an easy commitment, yet still allows for the Sunday School to have regular teams throughout the year that the kids can count on. In addition to the easy time commitment, there is also no preparation required ahead of time for you to participate. You simply show up just before the service starts and get your class briefing for the day. Our lead teachers do all the planning for you. Sound like something you would like to try? Then contact me at your soonest convenience so we can get you on the schedule for the Fall. We begin in early September. Lisa Lehman, Director of Children’s Ministries

Annual RHUMC CROP Walk Raises $3,300 Benefiting War Refugees, and Disaster Victims Around the World

By Jo Hunt, Missions Chair RHUMC members put their money where their hearts were on Sunday April 29 participating in the Annual Peninsula-Harbor Hunger Walk and raising more than $3,300 for people in need around the world. Thanks to all of you who participated. Many thanks to our pastor, who actually ran instead of walking the whole six miles! Thanks a bunch to Missions Committee members who made the BBQ a great success as usual. FYI, there were more eaters than walkers. Monies raised will be used to help stock food pantries, food banks and meal sites throughout the United States. Funds will also go to provide shelter kits, tents, mats, plastic sheets and bedding for war refugees in the Sudan and Iraq. They will also help to purchase desks and chairs for schools in Afghanistan. The Crop Walk for Hunger is sponsored annually by Church World Service, an international relief, development and refugee assistance agency of 36 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican denominations. Approximately 25 percent of all proceeds raised are used for local South Bay relief organizations including, FISH Emergency Center, SHAWL House, Toberman Settlement House and All Life Charities. The remaining 75 percent of proceeds go to worldwide relief agencies such as Adventist Development & Relief Agency, American Friends Service, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Baptist World Aid/Baptist World Alliance, CARE, Catholic Relief Services, Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, Heifer Project International, Islamic American Relief Agency, Outreach International, Project HOPE and many others. Again, thanks to all those who helped make this CROP Walk one of the best ever!

RHUMC Volunteers Reach into Community In our continuing work with Habitat for Humanity, we have signed up a score of volunteers to work on the dates described below. There is space for more workers – join in the fun of helping a family build a home and a brighter future. President Jimmy Carter will be in our area October 28-November 2 as part of the Jimmy Carter Work Project 2007 (JCWP'07) blitz build week-long event. He and a couple thousand volunteers will help finish the 30 units that are currently in a pre-build state. The volunteers are coming from all over: international, local as well as other states and affiliates. Our first RHUMC pre-build group of construction volunteers met at Habitat for Humanity’s Keegan warehouse in Carson on Saturday, July 21. Upcoming Saturday pre-build days are scheduled for August 4 and October 13 and are to take place at Keegan and at the Harborside (San Pedro) construction sites respectively. Have you reserved your place for both these dates? Watch the Sunday Bulletin announcing patio sign-ups in September for the October 13 on-site date to help us build 16 affordable home units for low-income families. TOBERMAN THRIFT SHOP! WE’RE GONNA NEED HELP!

Would you like to: See that donated clothing and household items go to people in need? Help a nice lady select an outfit within her budget for a job interview? Sell a $1.50 electric fry pan to a man who has no stove but needs hot food? Help a new bride outfit her apartment with linens and kitchen items for $20? If you speak even a bit of Spanish, perhaps you could help with some clients? For just four hours a month, on Tuesday? It’s air conditioned.

The TOBERMAN THRIFT SHOP will soon be moving from its temporary trailer to an expanded new store.

RHUMC people have been responsible for manning the shop on Tuesdays, and some of our good volunteers will be unable to sign up over the summer. There will be at least two in charge, and any new volunteer will be working with a seasoned one. If locations are convenient, carpooling from church works very well.

Please call Phyllis Goetz at (310) 377-5405 if you would like to ask questions about this rewarding service. Fall Parenting Class Preview

A Whale of a Story

Submitted by Michelle Sagolla

If you read the front page story of the SF Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale that had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralone Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around - she thanked them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.

May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people

who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you

And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude

The Next CORNERSTONE deadline is August 22
