» For the tenth consecutive year, Coppell ISD earned a perfect score and rating of “Superior Achievement” on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas, the financial accountability system by which all public school districts in Texas are measured.

» Coppell ISD offers its high school students many academic choices including its 21st century project-based learning high school, New Tech High @ Coppell. Other learning options include an academy that offers four programs such as International Baccalaureate, and S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

» Scholarship awards for the graduating class of 2012 totaled nearly $30 million.

» Over the past 11 years, the Coppell ISD Education Foundation has awarded over $800,000 in innovative instructional grants to benefit the students and staff of Coppell ISD.

Taste of Coppell is quickly becoming another Coppell tradition. The Coppell Chamber of Commerce recently hosted the 3rd Annual Taste of Coppell presented by Frost Bank.

The annual “Bite-Sized Showcase” was held at the Coppell Senior & Community Center at Grapevine Springs. Guests enjoyed unlimited food and beverage tastes for a single entry fee. In addition, live culinary demonstrations were given by Market Street, Ole’s Tex-Mex, Coppell Farmers Market and Hard Eight BBQ.

This year also included a celebrity judges’ panel. The judges were WFAA Meteorologist/Anchor Colleen Coyle, Mayor Karen Hunt, Coppell City Council members Bob Mahalik and Marvin Franklin, Coppell ISD Board of Trustees member Amy Dungan and Chamber member Beccy Ratliff. The audience also voted on their favorite item to win the Golden Fork Award.

J. Macklin’s Grill was named crowd favorite and winner of the 2012 Golden Fork Award. Biggby Coffee was awarded Best Breakfast. Hard Eight BBQ was chosen for Best Appetizer, J. Macklin’s Grill won Best Entrée and Pink Frosting Cupcakes won Best Dessert.

“We appreciate everyone’s support. The vendors, sponsors and all our volunteers work together to make Taste of Coppell a memorable experience for our guests,” said event chair Christi Greene. “We look forward to having everybody back next year to celebrate our community and the wonderful food we have to offer here in Coppell.”

At 14.71 square miles, nearly 39,000 people call Coppell home, yet it retains a small town atmosphere. Excellent city services, outstanding parks and facilities, safe neighborhoods, strong churches, and exemplary schools all provide for a quality lifestyle and a sense of community.

Coppell is almost fully developed with less than 800 acres for new commercial development and less than 30 acres for new residential development. The City of Coppell is committed to preserving the integrity of residential and commercial areas in the City by enhancing the quality of life and investment in Coppell.

The City wants to ensure that the high standard of living present in Coppell today will be maintained in the future. The City is dedicated to providing the best programs and services, ensuring financial stability, sustaining the City’s infrastructure, maintaining neighborhoods, supporting the business community and promoting all elements that make up a desirable community like Coppell. All measures being taken today are designed to help provide the best community where residents can live, work and play for a lifetime.

Coppell completed a strategic visioning process in 2009, and the Coppell Vision 2030 Plan was adopted by City Council to serve as the vision and road map that will guide Coppell into the future. This unique plan provides strategies to capitalize on future opportunities and challenges that Coppell will face as a growing community in a changing world. The potential opportunities and challenges will include managing both new development and possible redevelopment throughout the community.

The City is now taking steps and creating plans with concepts that incorporate the goals and initiatives that were identified during the visioning process. Revitalizing neighborhoods was one of the goals specifically identified in the Coppell Vision 2030 Plan. A new Comprehensive Land Use plan was recently developed to help spur revitalization projects in areas of need to ensure commercial neighborhoods and properties maintain their value.

Coppell has a variety of livable neighborhoods. High-quality, well-maintained neighborhood infrastructure includes sidewalks, streets, alleys, utilities and fences. State of the art technology infrastructure serves every neighborhood. A range of diverse housing choices for all generations is available in our city. The homes, both single and multi-family, and landscaping are attractive and well maintained.

Homes and buildings meet current codes and community standards with appropriate enforcement when necessary. Single family homes have a high percentage of occupant ownership. Neighbors are involved, know each other and help each other. Residents have opportunities to live where they work and work where they live.

Coppell is a community of spiritual strength with respect for differing personal beliefs. The faith community works in cooperation with local organizations and governmental institutions. Our residents support the faith-based community and programs. This community rallies in response to a crisis whether ours or others. Parents take responsibility for their children and are involved in their lives. Our community works together to help children learn to make good decisions. Our residents genuinely care about the welfare of others.

Coppell residents have convenient shipping in the city for daily necessities. Attractive, small commercial areas add value and blend with adjacent neighborhoods, while large community commercial centers are located at major intersections. A variety of restaurants are frequented by residents, employees of Coppell businesses and non-residents. Grocery stores, drug stores and other major retailers serve as anchors. Personal and professional services are available. Commercial centers have low vacancy rates with few empty storefronts.

Coppell has a diverse local economy and tax base. Capitalizing on our location, our city is a major distribution center for the Dallas-Fort Worth region and beyond. Regional and corporate headquarters are located in Coppell. Top quality business parks and major retail are located on I-635. Retail and business offices are located along SH 121. Top quality technology infrastructure link businesses and homes to the world. Home offices and home-based businesses have access to needed support services. Businesses are a major component of the city’s total tax base.

Coppell is attractive to residents, employers, retailers and distributors because of our location. Efficient and effective local traffic flow within Coppell contributes to acceptable travel times. Streets are safe for vehicles, bikes and pedestrians. There are safe sidewalks along major corridors and within neighborhoods. Multi-use trails, bikeways and pathways systems connect the community neighborhoods and surrounding cities. Convenient access to light rail links our city to the rest of the Metroplex. The Mayor Pro Tem is elected by the City Council and serves during the absence of the Mayor. All powers of the City, except as otherwise provided in the Home Rule Charter, are vested in the City Council, which

provides for the exercise and performance of all duties and obligations imposed upon the City by law.

City Council meetings are regularly held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:30 p.m. (with the exception of June, November and December, where there are no meetings on the 4th Tuesday) The meetings take place in the Council Chambers located on the 1st floor of Town Center, 255 Parkway Blvd. Special meetings are held as needed.

GETTING AROUND

Coppell is in the middle of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, a dynamic growth area encompassing nine counties with a population of over 6 million people. Coppell’s prime location and easy access by land or air helps keep the City’s rich history that was built around transportation alive today.

One of Coppell's selling points is its close proximity to DFW International Airport. Located halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth, part of the DFW property is located within Coppell city limits.

At the time it opened in 1974, DFW was the world's largest airport sitting on approximately 18,000 acres. DFW has grown to become the world's fourth busiest international airport, offering nearly 1,800 flights per day and serving 57 million passengers a year. DFW provides nonstop flights to 145 domestic and 48 international destinations, with service from 18 commercial airlines including seven international carriers. DFW is the highest capacity commercial airport in the world, boasting seven active runways and 155 active gates.

Currently, two large transportation improvement projects are affecting our

community. Both projects, when completed will enhance mobility and air quality through expanded roadway capacity, toll managed lanes and continuous frontage roads.

The approximately 17-mile LBJ Express project encompasses improvements along IH-635 from Luna Road to Greenville Avenue, as well as on IH-35E between Loop 12 and Valwood Parkway.

The DFW Connector Project is dedicated to improving mobility along SH 114 and SH 121 in a safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally sensitive manner.

Quality of life and economic growth are directly related to the quality of education. Family-centered neighborhoods encourage community involvement in the schools. Education is a top priority in Coppell, and people often cite schools as a primary reason to move here.

The Coppell community supports schools and educational programs with strong, well-defined partnerships among City, schools and businesses.

Community facilities are jointly used by the City and schools. Schools have a wide range of academic and extracurricular programs. Educational opportunities exist for learners of all ages and abilities. The Coppell Library provides quality educational opportunities, programs and tutoring for students in private, public and home schools. Coppell children attend neighborhood schools or schools that fir the needs or interests of the students. Our community takes pride in the performance and accomplishments of our schools and students.

Coppell is served by three school districts: Coppell ISD, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and Lewisville ISD; as well as Universal Academy, a public charter school.

Coppell is also home to North Lake College – North Campus.

COPPELL ISD

In the quest to satisfy its mission to “…ensure learners achieve personal success, develop strong moral character, and become dynamic leaders and global citizens with a zeal for service… ” the Coppell ISD prides itself in the many academic, fine arts, and athletic “choice” offerings available to keep learners engaged and thinking critically in order to be successful in their future. During the 2011-2012 school year, five of the district’s 14 campuses earned the rating of “Recognized,” and nine campuses earned the state’s rating of “Exemplary.”

Although the ratings continue to be strong, CISD believes a more balanced and accurate assessment of student performance is necessary in order for learners to achieve at their highest potential. Recognized as a transformational leader in public education in Texas, Coppell ISD was recently named to the Texas High Performance Schools Consortium, a group that Dr. Jeff Turner, Superintendent, is co-chairing.

The 23 Texas public school districts and charter schools included in the consortium are tasked with making recommendations to the governor, legislature, and commissioner of education (during the 2013 legislative session) that will transform the system of public education. Through the development of innovative, next-generation learning standards and better- more authentic assessments and accountability systems, the district will continue to lead the way in 21st century learning!

CARROLLTON FARMERS BRANCH ISD - C-FB ISD believes education partners with school and community. C-FB ISD’s one goal: high achievement for all students coupled with the district’s strong character values, makes C-FB ISD a special place for students.

From their humble beginnings as log cabins with dirt floors, schools in the district have grown to a present value of more than $300 million. While a total enrollment of 200 students in Carrollton in 1914 filled one school to its capacity, the district’s 43 schools today serve more than 26,000 students from parts of Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Addison, Coppell, Dallas and Irving.

LEWISVILLE ISD

The Lewisville Independent School District prides itself on its long-standing tradition of educational excellence. Serving more than 50,000 students, LISD has been experiencing rapid growth during the past 15 years, and will continue to grow on average between 1,200-2,000 new students annually until 2016.

Encompassing 127-square miles, LISD serves all or portions of thirteen municipalities including Argyle, Carrollton, Coppell, Copper Canyon, Double Oak, Flower Mound, Frisco, Grapevine, Highland Village, Hebron, Lewisville, Plano and The Colony.

UNIVERSAL ACADEMY

Since its inception in 1998, LTTS Charter Schools Inc. dba Universal Academy has changed in many ways, but remains steadfastly committed to challenging today’s youth to aspire to their highest potential, and to inspire a life-long love of learning.

Today a vibrant learning community of 1400 students from diverse cultures, backgrounds and nationalities in grades prekindergarten through 12 is challenged by a rigorous core curriculum and innovative programs in two schools located in Irving and Coppell.

At the May 2012 meeting of the Coppell Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, a RESOLUTION CONCERNING HIGH STAKES STANDARDIZED TESTING was passed.

Immediate Past Chairman Casey Klein stated, “The Coppell Chamber of Commerce feels that standardized, high stakes testing is strangling our public schools. We believe that a quality education begins by changing what goes on in our classrooms.

Accountability is a good thing, but the system currently being used will not prepare students for college or a career. We need to stop the relentless test preparation and allow our students to learn the material instead of having to memorize facts that they will not retain after the test.”

Senior & Community Center at Grapevine SpringsThe Senior and Community Center at Grapevine Springs serves all individuals in the community who are age 55 years and above. The center offers a variety of programs, trips, special events, activities, and classes which are absolutely free or have minimal cost assigned to them.

Facility amenities include a fitness room, activity room, arts and crafts room, full functional kitchen, meeting spaces, multi-purpose room, game room and outside trails. A commons room provides an excellent setting for people to socialize or just enjoy the view of the park.

Rolling Oaks Memorial Center

Rolling Oaks Memorial Center is a 36.3-acre public facility offering traditional grave spaces where the purchaser can place a lawn-level memorial or secure privileges for a family monument. The initial phase, encompassing 16.2-acres, features a fully-enclosed columbarium with banks of niche

spaces for those residents who wish to have cremation as a part of the process. The Center also houses a 12,000-square-foot funeral home, a 2,000-square-foot outdoor pavilion, and landscaped burial grounds.

Rolling Oaks Memorial Center offers interment services, burial spaces, markers and monuments, memorial benches and urns.

Aquatic and Recreation Center

The Coppell Aquatic and Recreation Center opened its doors in 2000 and has since served the community as the only public recreation and aquatic center.

The Center has five pools for public use, three are outdoor pools that consist of a competition pool, slide and play pool and a children’s pool. The indoor pool, which consists of two pools includes a lap pool and a child’s play pool.

The outdoor pools are open Memorial Day through Labor Day, yearly and the indoor pools are open year round.

Coppell Farmers Market The Coppell Farmers Market, the best, unique small market in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, started in the summer of 2003. The market has grown from a handful of vendors to over thirty vendors with a wide selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables, natural meats, organic dairy, eggs, honey, artisan breads, and value added products. Over a thousand customers come to the Coppell Farmers Market on a given Saturday to find local, healthy food, develop a relationship with those providing their food, meet up with friends and neighbors, and be a part of the local food movement.

The Coppell Farmers Market is located in the historical Old Town Coppell where many of the original homes have been rezoned for historical commercial. Most of the area around the historical center was indeed farming community so it is still fitting to have a farmers market for the community to gather and find fresh grown produce.

Trail SystemThe City of Coppell Trail System is a master-planned greenbelt trail beginning at the area along Denton Creek in the Andrew Brown Community Park system. This trail system is Coppell’s effort to develop a local trail, which is easily accessed by all citizens, which will ultimately connect to the regional trail system linking other surrounding communities. The vision for the continuation of the trails is to provide easy access to the trails at any point within the city. There are approximately 7 miles of concrete multi-use trails currently on the ground with additional sections in the planning process.

Coppell Nature ParkCoppell Nature Park is a 66-acre park located within Wagon Wheel Park on the west side of Coppell.

The Nature Park is a natural habitat for hawks, coyotes, bobcats, and other animals. More than 130 different species of birds migrate through the park each year and numerous types of native vegetation may be found within the Park.

The Friends of Coppell Nature Park (FCNP) promotes the preservation of our natural environment through conservation and education.

The Park’s development has been fostered by citizen and youth participation. Community service and education work hand-in-hand with youth and adults to further our quality of life. The park represents a learning experience for students and a peaceful retreat for all citizens of this Northwest Dallas County area.

COPPELL GREEN TEAM

The Coppell Green Team is a multi-tiered recognition program designed to foster environmental awareness and promote sustainable behavior.

The Coppell Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to enhancing and promoting the business environment and quality of life in Coppell, TX.

One of the many ways we gauge the business environment is through the Annual Biz Walk.

Businesses are asked to rate their perception of the current business climate from 1 or “Poor” to 10 or “Excellent.” Responses consistently indicate a generally positive local outlook.

When asked “what are the benefits of having your business in Coppell…” volunteers heard a wide array of answers. Responses include everything from, “safer area with good traffic for customers” to “a good mix of commercial and residential businesses.”

An additional question from the Biz Walk survey is “What could be improved about your experience opening/operating in Coppell?” For the overwhelming majority of businesses, the answer continued to be “improve the sign ordinance.”

Shortly after completing the 4th Annual Biz Walk, The Chamber sent a letter to the Coppell City Council requesting the City to review at the current sign ordinance and consider revising it.

In response to The Chamber’s request, the City Council created a Sign Ordinance Task Force and invited The Chamber to participate.

For the next several months, the Task Force reviewed the details of the sign ordinance and finally came to a consensus on what should be brought to Planning and Zoning and ultimately City Council. This process had a good deal of ‘give and take,’ and The Chamber believes the end result is positive for business.

City Council voted unanimously to approve the recommended changes to the sign ordinance from Planning & Zoning. The Coppell Chamber of Commerce was there every step of the way to ensure business concerns were heard.

This is why it is important to participate and let your voice be heard. The Chamber exists to serve those business needs. The Chamber believes this community continues to promote local business to ensure its success.
