THE COOL EARTH PROJECT - GeoExchange

THE COOL EARTH PROJECT What is Cool Earth? The Cool Earth project has been created to assess the effectiveness of a geoexchange system against traditional heating and cooling technology. Two homes have been built, side by side– one with the geoexchange technology and one without. The aim is to test the difference and measure the effectiveness of the technology, over a two year period. It’s one of LandCorp’s ‘Design, Sustainability and Innovation’ initiatives. Innovation through demonstration. GeoExchange Australia has partnered with LandCorp, designing the geoexchange system and providing the ground source heat pump unit. The WaterFurnace 7 Series ground source heat pump has been installed in the Cool Earth house. The variable speed compressor, fan and pump in the 7 Series provide world leading efficiencies, while the Aurora controls and Intellizone2 zoning system provide the ultimate in home comfort. The built-in energy and performance monitoring system and capability for wi-fi connectivity ensures the latest in system access and diagnostics for both the homeowner and the installer . The Ground Heat Exchanger is the component of the geoexchange system that extracts or returns the heat to the ground. In an innovative first, an open loop system has been designed for the Cool Earth house so that the groundwater (after being used in the heat exchange process) can provide sub-surface irrigation to the garden lawn. Excess water then trickles back down into the aquifer rather than being evaporated in a hot Perth summer.

THE COOL EARTH PROJECT

What is Cool Earth?

The built-in energy and performance monitoring system and capability for wi-fi connectivity ensures the latest in system access and diagnostics for both the homeowner and the installer.

HEAT AND COOL YOUR HOME THE SMART WAY WITH A WATERFURNACE GEOEXCHANGE COMFORTSYSTEM, USING THE CLEAN, FREE, RENEWABLE ENERGY FOUND JUST BELOW THE EARTH’S SURFACE

Geoexchange systems do not rely on fluctuating outsideair temperatures or non-renewable fossil fuels to providesuperior indoor comfort. Instead they utilise constant ground temperatures located just a few metres below your backyard.

With energy efficiency ratings of 400 to 800%, Geoexchange systems save many homeowners 40 to 70% in heating and cooling costs while helping to protect the environment. With outstanding energy efficiency, cost effectiveness and environmental responsibility, it’s easy to see why moreand more homeowners are converting to Geoexchange.

The ground serves as a giant solar collector, storing almost 50% of the heat energy from the sun. Just a few metres below the surface, ground temperatures remain relatively constant and moderate all year. A Geoexchange system uses the earth as a free heat source during winter and a heat sink in summer. Horizontal loops are preferred where land area is available, although if space is limited, vertical loops are installed. A nearby pond can also be utilized as a water loop, while if well water is abundant and of good quality, an open water loop system may be ideal.
