    I am delighted to welcome you to the spring edition of The Conveyor Magazine from the Finlay Group. We had a great reaction to our first magazine issued at the end of 2016. Thank you for the positive feedback and I hope you continue to enjoy reading our latest news.

    2016 was a year of political uncertainty but I am pleased to report that we ended the year at an all-time high with continued growth over 2015. We’re delighted with this performance and it means we are continuing to recruit new staff to ensure we can maintain and improve our service levels to you, our customers.

    The UK economy posted the second best growth of the G7 nations in 2016 and recently the Office for Budget Responsibility increased its prediction for 2017 to 2%; a figure that might yet still be upgraded.

    Whilst there is still uncertainty over the impact of the Brexit vote the signs all point to a strong construction sector buoyed by government investment in construction. In the autumn statement new chancellor, Philip Hammond announced £1.3bn of investment in the country’s infrastructure - for roads, railway tracks, energy plants and building projects. This bodes well for the quarrying sector whilst demand for recycled aggregates is also forecast to remain strong - largely because of the levy per tonne on virgin aggregates.

    We’re strengthening our team throughout the UK and we’re delighted to announce a number of new appointments.

    Know anyone who would like to join a progressive, successful business? We’re still looking to fill sales and service positions with Finlay Group. Please forward your CV to [email protected]

    In this edition of The Conveyor we showcase more new models from Terex Finlay including the TC65 tracked conveyor, launched in late 2016, and its larger stablemate, the TC80, only just introduced this year. A new I -140 impact crusher recently made its debut at the Conexpo show in Las Vegas where it was exceptionally well received and we showcase this machine, alongside the I-140 RS later on in the magazine.

    This year we will continue to invest in rejuvenating our marketing. We’ve had a superb response to our new style adverts – these are featured on page 22/23 if you’ve not yet spotted them in the trade press. We are also set to join the world of Social Media. We know this is the future, especially for the next generation of customers, and we'll be announcing these platforms in the coming months.

    Your views of our magazine are most welcome and if you have suggestions for articles then we’d love to hear from you on [email protected] you for your on-going support

    Dave Statham Managing Director Finlay Group

    WELCOME FINLAY PEOPLEBen Beard, Sales Engineer, Finlay South West With a solid background in construction and engineering, Ben Beard joined our sales team in the South West at the start of the year and is already making his mark with current and prospective customers. An agricultural engineering HND graduate, Ben started his career on the Caterpillar Engineering Apprenticeship scheme, before working as an engineer for Cat for 3 years. He moved into used equipment sales with Finnings before supporting and selling new compact machines. Prior to joining our team Ben worked for Holt JCB as Business Development Manager, looking after waste, recycling and local authority customers; experience that he now takes forward into his new role. We’re very pleased to welcome him to the Finlay team.

    Tom Moran, Sales Engineer, Finlay Northern We’re very pleased to make an internal promotion to fill the additional role of Sales Engineer in the North. Tom has spent 3 years working hard at Finlay and thoroughly deserves this opportunity. Having cut his teeth in financial sales prior to joining the company, Tom worked for EPS and then moved into sales looking after our franchises for Proflow recycling screens and Allu processing buckets. In his new role Tom will be supporting existing customers and looking for new opportunities with the full range of Finlay crushers and screeners. We wish him every bit of luck in his new role.

    Chris Bell, Sales Engineer, Finlay Southern Another internal move comes in the shape of a promotion to Sales Engineer for Finlay Group employee, Chris Bell. A career in the Royal Engineers as class 1 plant fitter and combat engineer preceded his original move to Finlay Hire in 2011 where Chris was responsible for promoting the hire fleet and sales of Allu processing buckets in England and Wales. Notable achievements include growth of the Allu business over the last 6 years and the sale of two ALLU M-Series, from the heavy duty mining range, for 70 tonne excavators working in coal power stations in the Midlands where they process coal slurry. Chris is now looking forward to turning his attention to crushers and screeners and increasing sales in the south of the country.

    O’Doherty Haulage’s site in north east London is home to a Terex Finlay J-1170AS jaw crusher which can be found among piles of aggregate crushing demolition and construction waste and turning it into Type 1 aggregate and hard core ready to be reused on construction sites. The jaw crusher ensures that 100% of C&D waste brought on to the five-acre site of the independent family-run business is recycled.

    Providing the flexibility of a crushing and screening plant on one machine, the jaw chamber configuration of the J1170AS can be set up specifically for quarrying applications, or for processing construction demolition debris, using the hydraulic release chamber option. It also features a heavy-duty variable speed vibrating grizzly feeder (VGF) and integrated pre-screen, which gives excellent production throughput in quarrying, mining, demolition and recycling applications.

    Owner and founder of O’Doherty’s Haulage, James O’Doherty and his team, including sons Kieran and James, are specialists in waste management, muck-away, excavations, plant hire, transport and aggregates. The company was formed 1987 after a gap in the market was spotted to provide a service to the building and construction industry. Today the company recycles all waste arriving on its site in Edmonton into re-usable products whether it has come from domestic clear-ups or multi-million pound long-term contracts. John Rochester is general manager and is clearly proud of the company’s recycling ethos;

    “Our recycling plant is licensed to handle all construction, demolition and municipal waste including treatment of contaminated soils 24/7. Every day we have 50-odd skip lorries and tippers come to our recycling centre and everything is sorted and an outlet found for all materials that come in. Everything we can’t find a use for is shredded and goes for RDF. We are licensed to handle 360,000 tonnes of material a year, although we’re not quite at capacity yet, and, thanks to our zero-waste-to-landfill policy nothing from this site goes to landfill. To achieve this we’ve improved the transfer station and invested millions of pounds in new machines, such as the Terex Finlay jaw crusher. We’re very happy with it. So far it has worked two 11-hour shifts for two to three months to keep up with the demand for sized aggregate.”To ensure the jaw crusher maintains its ceaseless efforts, Leon Sheehy, Managing Director of Finlay Plant South East, or a member of the Finlay Group team, is on site once a week to cast an eye over the machine to ensure it is working smoothly. Whilst there he also checks on the other pieces of Terex Finlay kit including three Terex Finlay 883+ heavy-duty screens, one 694+ inclined screen and a standard J-1170 jaw crusher. As owner, James O’Doherty says;

    “Leon helps us choose the bits of kit that the business requires. He is heavily involved in the discussion to get the right machine to suit the job. The J1170AS brings a range of benefits that supports our business. The main positive is the fact that one machine is doing the work of two, but the additional features, including less noise, dust and fuel consumption, also really add up. The jaw crusher enables us to get more value-added product such as 10mm and 20mm recycled aggregate in addition to Type 1 aggregates, so it’s a definite bonus.”

    QUARTER OF A CENTURY

    NOT OUTThe Thomas Armstrong Group has taken delivery of its 25th Terex Finlay machine from Finlay Plant Northern in a working relationship that spans over 35 years.

    With over 180 years in construction services and building products the ambitious company has grown both organically and by acquisition to become a major producer of sands, gravels, graded limestone and other recycled hardcore gravels, concrete and paving blocks, pre-cast concrete and timber products. A new Terex Finlay 390 Hydrascreen is the latest addition to the fleet and has been put to work at the company’s Overby Quarry site in Wigton, Cumbria - one of two sand quarries operated by The Thomas Armstrong Group in the North West.

    Martyn Cueto, the Group’s quarry manager, says that the reason the company keeps going back to Finlay Plant Northern is the top-quality products and service they receive.

    “The machines we’ve had from Finlay Plant Northern are great; some of them now are over 15 years old and they’re still in operation, seven days a week, 10 hours a day. Our new Terex Finlay 390 Hydrascreen is no exception to that; it’s cost effective to run, boasts a simple process and can work in confined spaces. However, just as importantly, the back-up and service from the team at Finlay Plant is fantastic - parts we need are always delivered the next day ensuring minimal downtime.”With an extremely fuel efficient diesel-hydraulic system, the 390 has a large capacity, 14ft loading hopper and a remote-controlled tipping reject grid. Featuring a robust 12’x5’ screen box on every deck, it is processing 110 tonnes of sand from the quarry an hour, producing two different products. The first, an oversize product, is fed to a washing plant to create a single sized aggregate and the second is 3mm top-quality natural plastering sand.

    Charlie Nairn, Managing Director of Finlay Plant Northern has been working with the company for many years and believes the partnership works because he understands the nature of their business and provides exactly the right machines for the job;

    “Thomas Armstrong doesn’t require a three-way split for this application so the Terex Finlay 390 Hydrascreen is the perfect solution for them. The screen box can be set at variable amplitudes and screen angles, meaning it has the capability to process sand to an accurate size, ideal for what it’s required to do at the Overby Quarry.”

    Gareth Johnson from dealer Finlay South West believes the popularity of tracked mobile jaw crushers is increasing thanks to the option to customise to the customer’s exact requirements;

    “The J1175’s are working exceptionally well and playing a key part in Earthline’s operations; ensuring high value products are processed with maximum output. On their sites large sized product is excavated which is surrounded by clay. This material goes straight into the machines and their independent pre-screens and larger opening make it easy to process this kind of material. The machines also offer the ability to be configured to offer flexible options to meet market demand.”More JS1175's have been subsequently been despatched to Jeremy Bishop Haulage in Devon to cope with demand for their recycled aggregates.

    This included a more compact hopper configuration, high specification rubber hopper base and a constant speed engine to eliminate the need for diesel exhaust fluid. The modifications were carried out by Finlay Group’s engineering team who have the experience and know-how based on years of experience of modifying machines to suit customer preferences.

    Steve Wiltshire is a Site Manager for Earthline;

    “We selected the Terex Finlay J1175 jaw crushers based on the performance of our existing machines currently operating in our quarries. They do a very good job for us and provide good value for money. The machines are backed up with great support on site from Finlay Plant SW which is very important to us as downtime is money.”Along with the latest additions to its current fleet of machines, Earthline has also recently purchased two Terex Finlay 883 screeners and an 883 Spaleck to maximise production at its quarries.

    Wiltshire-based Earthline, one of the largest independent earthmoving, recycling and quarrying companies in the south of England, has taken delivery of three new Terex Finlay J1175 jaw crushers to support increased demand for their processed products.

    The bespoke units have been set to work at the company’s quarries in Shipton, Hatford and Shellingford each of which produces high quality limestone. The team at Earthline worked with Managing Director of Finlay South West, Gareth Johnson, to modify the units to meet the exacting needs of their quarries.

    Friel Construction of Cannock is delighted that a new tracked inclined screener from Terex Finlay is consolidating their sustainability credentials on a new Barratts Homes site in the West Midlands. The 683 Supertrak, supplied by Finlay Central, is proving its worth as a self-contained means of converting material generated by the groundworks and is creating valuable products including top-quality NHBC approved top soil, along with three to four different sizes of gravel and sharp sand for pipe bedding and service mains.

    Brendon Lines of Friel Construction is the site manager on the 119-home development overseeing the use of the screener;

    “This is the best piece of plant I’ve worked with bar none. I first used a 683 several years ago and I’ve been pushing for one ever since. All the material we process and screen is being used on our site here at Cannock, or at other Friel sites in the locality. We are working to the Considerate Constructor standard and this arrangement really helps with environmental performance.”

    The company was formed in the 1990’s to provide civil engineering and groundworks services across the Midlands and clients include many of the national house builders as well as regional housebuilders, including their own Friel Homes. The company is one of only a few contractors using plant like this from start to finish on a housing site;

    “With this unit there’s no need to haul the material we generate off site as it’s self-contained and the process makes economic sense too, as it saves on fuel, haulage and muckaway facilities. We don’t have to tip material and we are getting real quality products for use in a variety of ways on the site. We definitely think this is the way forward. Anything we can do to regenerate and reuse is important.” The Terex Finlay 683 Supertrak is a compact, aggressive three-way split mobile screen, which is suitable for a range of applications throughout the construction, recycling and quarrying sectors. It is renowned for its quality, performance and productivity and combines scalping, screening and stockpiling into one self-contained unit.

    Neil Bailey of Finlay Central worked with Friel to specify the unit, which joins another Terex Finlay unit in the fleet – a 595 scalping grid.

    “Friel Construction is, no doubt, a forward-thinking business when it comes to sustainability and running the 683 on site is reflective of that.”

    Friel Construction take pioneering approach with new Terex Finlay 683 Supertrak

    MAKING AN IMPACT INBRICK RECYCLING

    Russell Robinson is Sales Engineer at Finlay Plant Southern and worked with the team at PJ Thory to spec the machine to achieve best in class tonnage and grade of material;

    “We have a long standing relationship with PJ Thory and have already supplied a total of five Terex Finlay machines over the last three years for the company’s operations which include aggregates, earthworks, haulage and contracting. When they approached us for a crushing solution we recommended the I-110RS as the idea machine for the job in hand. Our engineers have adjusted both the rotation and twin aprons of the machine to achieve maximum throughput of 180 tonnes per hour, so it is a highly productive solution for recycling bricks.”The impact crusher is a crusher and screening plant in one and features a detachable 12’x5’ double deck sizing screen. It recirculates oversized material back to the raw feed in the crushing chamber making it a single pass feeder. James Thory is a Director of PJ Thory and is delighted with the solution;

    “The overall performance, build quality and reliability of the I-110RS impact crusher is excellent. Combined with the Trackstack 8042T it is proving to be the perfect set-up for our brick recycling operation. We’ve been working with Finlay Plant Southern for about 15 years now; the service, spares and back up is second to none.”

    A duo of products purchased on a five-year contract by Peterborough based PJ Thory for their local brick recycling operation has not only improved efficiency but saved the company time and fuel.

    A Terex Finlay I-110RS tracked impact crusher was supplied by Finlay Southern to provide a complete crushing solution for the company’s recycling operation at Forterra Brickworks. The machine has been set up to enable maximum throughput at the required reduction and produces material at a specified gradation in a single pass. A second unit, the Trackstack 8042T, was supplied to work in conjunction with the I-110RS; receiving material directly to stockpile up to 11m in height. With the ability to load trucks directly it eliminates the need to double handle.

    The two units work in tandem to process “seconds” bricks; reducing the material to 0-20mm which is re-introduced into the factory for the manufacturing of breeze blocks.
