THE CONTRIBUTORS Paul J. Bagley is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Loyola College in Maryland and currently he is President of the North American Spinoza Society. His essays on Descartes, Spinoza, the Enlightenment, and esoteric ism have been published in such journals as Tijdschrift voor Filosofie, Studia Spinozana, Philosophical Forum, Interpretation: A Journal of Political Philosophy, Journal of the History of Ideas, and a number of anthologies. Steven Barbone is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at San Diego State University. Paul J. Bagley is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Loyola College in Maryland and currently he is President of the North American Spinoza Society. Richard Mason is a Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge. He is the author of many articles on the history of philosophy and on philosophical logic. He is the author of the recently published The God ofSpinoza from Cambridge University Press, as well as Before Logic, forthcoming from the State University of New York Press.

Lee C. Rice is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Marquette University. His doctoral studies were undertaken at the University of Paris, as a Fulbright Fellow, and at St. Louis University, as a Woodrow Wilson F eHow. He is the author of over fifty essays on the thought of Spinoza, and co-editor (with Steven Barbone) of the Samuel Shirley editions of Spinoza' s Letters, The Principles of Cartesian Philosophy, and Metaphysical Thoughts from Hackett Publishing Company. Other areas in which has published include gay ethics and the philosophy of science.

Michael Rosenthal is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Grinnell College. He recently has published essays on the political philosophy of Spinoza in History of Philosophy Quarterly and History of Political Thought. He also has been awarded a Harris Faculty Fellowship to complete work on a manuscript, Persuasive Passions: A Study ofSpinoza 's Argument for Tolerance in the Theologico-Political Treatise.

Steven B. Smith is Professor of Political Science and Master of Branford College at Yale University. He has written widely in the history of political thought and his book, Spinoza, Liberalism, and the Question of Jewish Identity from Yale University Press, was the recipient of the Ralph Waldo Emerson Award.

Martin D. Yaffe is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Texas. His research interests include political philosophy and Jewish philosophy. He has published extensively on various aspects of Spinoza's Tractatus theologico-politicus in Jewish Political Studies Review, Political Science Reviewer, II cannocchiale, and a number of anthologies. He is the recipient of an Earhart Foundation Grant to complete work on an English translation ofSpinoza' s Tractatus theologico-politicus.
