Annual CMSC Meeting in Nashville, better known as Music City!

Join over 2,000 delegates and more than 70 exhibitors for the meeting, which begins just after Memorial Day, on Wednesday, May 30th, and continues through Saturday, June 2nd. Be sure to stay a day or two before or after to enjoy all that Nashville has to offer.

Each year at the Annual Meeting, the CMSC endeavors to create an agenda with broad appeal that offers MS healthcare professionals the most up-to-date information on both the art and science of MS care. You’ll spend four days choosing from 60 educational sessions—lectures, symposia, workshops, roundtables, and poster sessions—presented by national and international experts in comprehensive care and research. There is a Fundamentals Track for newcomers to MS, as well as programs geared specifically to nurses, advanced practice clinicians, and rehab professionals. On the last day of the meeting, the MS Coalition will hold its first Multiple Sclerosis Summit, a live educational event for people with MS and their caregivers consisting of an exposition of products as well as educational sessions and workshops.

The Annual Meeting offers CME/CE/CEU credit for atten-dance by physicians, nurses, physician assistants, rehabilitation professionals, pharmacists, social workers, and psychologists.

This official CMSC meeting city guide will help you get the most out of your visit. We’ve consulted with the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corporation to bring you the hottest restaurants, sights, and sounds of the city to explore. So get ready to go honky tonking and enjoy Music City!

Getting To and AroundNashville

Map of the Music City Center and CMSC Contracted Hotels

TRANSPORTATION OPTIONSNashville International Airport (BNA) is about 30 minutes from the Downtown area. Nashville has limited public transportation, so taking a cab (a $25 flat fee to Downtown plus $1 for each additional passenger going to the same location) or Lyft/Uber (about $20) or renting a car are the best options. The pickup spot for Lyft/Uber is on level 1 at Ground Transportation (which is one level below Baggage Claim). Stand at the Rideshare Pickup Zone and use your smartphone app to arrange a ride. There is also a 24-hour local shuttle service for $20 per per-son. If you really want to save money, you can hop on Nashville MTA’s Route 18 Airport/Elm Hill Pike bus for $1.60 one way. Visit the MTA website (http://www.nashvillemta.org/) or call 615-862-5950 for schedules and pickup locations.

WalkingNashville’s neighborhoods are very walkable, but getting from one neighborhood to the next will typically require a car, cab, or Lyft/Uber.

BusThere is a Music City Green Circuit Bus, a clean diesel hybrid, which offers a free and convenient way to get around Downtown and The Gulch. Visit http://www.nashvillemta.org/Nashville-MTA-Music-City-Circuit.asp for more information on this “Downtown Circulator.”

MUSIC CITY CENTER201 Fifth Avenue SouthNashville, TN 37203615-401-1400www.nashvillemusiccitycenter.com

The Music City Center is a beautiful, light-filled building that was constructed in 2013 to host conventions in the Downtown area of Nashville. It’s within walking distance of the Country Music

Hall of Fame, Nashville Visitor’s Center, Honky Tonk Highway, Ryman Auditorium, and many other sights, hotels, and restau-rants. It is designated as a “green” build-ing and was built with environmental

sustainability in mind. It has four acres of greenway on the roof, designed to look like the rolling hills of Tennessee, and its own beehive (the honey the bees make is used in the convention center’s kitch-en), and 845 rooftop solar panels. In addition, it has a rainwater collector that can hold 360,000 gallons of water to flush toilets and irrigate the landscaping. From the air, the roof looks like a guitar.

If you’re driving, visit the convention center’s web-site for directions: www.nashvillemusiccitycenter.com/directions. Parking is available for $24 plus tax per day with in/out privileges. The entrance to the garage is on Sixth Avenue between Korean Veterans Boulevard and Demonbreun Street.

NASHVILLE & ITS NEIGHBORHOODS If you like country music, Nashville is your town. But it’s also your town if you like rock ‘n roll, the blues, jazz, art, good food, and plain old fun. Nashville is such a creative city, it’s been called “The Athens of the South” (and it has a full-scale

replica of the Greek Parthenon to prove it!). This “big little city” is also booming—building hotels, opening restaurants and shops, and selling contem-porary art, vintage guitars, and all things music.

Ironically, healthcare (there are seven major hos-pitals) and not music is the biggest industry in Nashville, a city of 1.4 million people and growing. The populace is very well-educated, too—there are 27 schools, including Vanderbilt University. Other top industries are tourism and, yes, music: Songwriters, singers, and musicians flock here like a moth to a flame!

You’ll be spending most of your time in the Downtown area where the CMSC Annual Meeting will be held, but there’s much more to Nashville than Broadway and its environs. Many of Nashville’s neighborhoods have been revitalized, such as The Gulch, 12 South, and Germantown, and are worth a visit, as is Gaylord Opryland, which is on the outskirts of the city. (See pages 11-22 for details on these neighborhoods.)

To get you into the mood for your Nashville visit, surf to the Nashville Tourism website and watch a trailer for the 1-hour documentary “For the Love of Music: The Story of Nashville” at: www.youtube.com/embed/snAvzmHRTAg?rel=0&ht-ml5=1&controls=1&autoplay=1&loop=1&sho-winfo=0&modestbranding=0&wmode=opaque.

WEATHER WATCHAverage temperatures in late May and early June range from 64oF at night up to 83 oF during the day.

GETTING AROUND

NASHVILLE SOUVENIRSLooking to bring a little Nashville home beyond the requisite t-shirt? Here are a few items that say Music City: • Cowboy boots and hats (check out Atria and

Margaritaville in the Downtown area for good deals)• Tennessee whiskey (Jack Daniels)• GooGoo Clusters (the first-ever nougat candy bar)• The Loveless Café strawberry preserves and biscuit mix

The most famous spots are Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge—and yes, the building is lavender! Try to make it up to the rooftop lounge. Legends Corner, on the corner of Fifth and Broadway, is often the easiest club to access at night.

Clubs that play rock, blues, and jazz music in-clude Exit/In, Mercy Lounge, Station Inn, Douglas Corner, and Nashville Jazz Workshop (in Germantown). There is also a symphony in the Downtown area. And, of course, there’s the Ryman Auditorium, which is active two to three nights a week with concerts and sometimes still hosts the Grand Ole Opry.

THINGS TO DOOTHER SIGHTS TO VISIT NEAR NASHVILLEOPRYLANDNo visit to Nashville is complete without a trip to Gaylord Opryland, which is located about 15 minutes outside of the city center. The Gaylord Opryland Hotel is delightful and expansive. There’s

a garden atrium, an indoor river you can take a ride on, water-falls, and many shops indoors, as well as shows to see. Outside, there’s a golf course. There are also a variety of restaurants,

including Ravello, Cascades American Café, and Findley’s Irish Pub.

CHEEKWOOD, BELMONT, AND HERMITAGE ESTATESIf you love gardens, Nashville’s Cheekwood Estate is a must-see. Located just outside the city, this pri-vate estate (owned by the Cheek family of Maxwell House coffee fame) features 55 acres of charming botanical gardens as well as a sculpture garden.

Nearby, you can vis-it Belmont Mansion, an elaborate Pre-Civil War Era antebellum estate. And not far from there, you will find Andrew

Jackson’s Hermitage, the former home of our 7th President. The landmark features sprawling grounds and gardens, Jackson’s home, and a museum.
