Having achievedthe distinction of being shortlisted they have alreadyannounced their arrival. Considerate Hoteliers have announced this year’s Considerate Hotel ofthe Year 2014 short list. We are extremely proud to make thisannouncement and when one reviews the list it really does cover thedifferent extremes of the hotel world. It is also the first year when we havecreated a Considerate Housekeeping Team of the Year Award. It is a timeto sing some more hymns of untold heroes and pioneering tales. Excitingtimes indeed!

In this week’s News Bulletin we are offering you a brief glimpse of the achievements of those hotelsthat have made it onto the short-list. The Considerate Hoteliers Award Short List by Category goes as follows:

International Considerate Hotel of theYear (sponsored by Gilchrist &Soames):

Chepu Eco-Lodges (Isla Chiloe, Chile) All of the lodges’ water is collected from the rain and filtered in the soil witha innovative catching system that keeps the water fresh and clean. Theythen store it in tanks over a hill to maintain a constant water feed in case ofa pump failure. To pump water into the tanks they use wind energy sosaving water is also a way to save energy.

Hotel Storchen (Zurich, Switzerland)Via the project with www.naturli.ch the hotel supports the local producersnot only for their own hotel but have motivated 55 other hotels so far touse this supplier for local products especially for breakfast in the hotels.

Park Hyatt Hadahaa (Maldives)The resorts has developed their very own hydroponic garden and whileguests have the freedom to wander in for a look around they have also

created a nature dining menu where guests are surrounded by the lushvegetation for a meal highlighting the produce of the island. TheHydroponic Garden gives the hotel the opportunity to grow its own lettuce,herbs and some vegetables such as cherry tomatoes, spinach, kale,asparagus beans and zucchini.

Palais Namaskar (Marrakech, Morocco)The hotel writes a CSR news letter at least once per month, in which theyinform the staff about related happenings such as projects that have beensuccessfully completed or about new initiatives. The staff are alsoencouraged to share their CSR ideas through another Green Book whichhas been placed in the Staff Canteen.

UK Considerate Hotel of the Year (sponsoredby Gram)

Best Western Monkbar (York) They are gearing up for Tour de France’s “Festival of Wheels and Meals”!hosting their own month-long “Festival of Wheels and Meals”! In the run upto Le Grand Depart, the hotel will be offering incentives to customersarriving by bicycle and encouraging staff to come to work on their bikes,plus creating a special menu comprising of classical and contemporaryFrench dishes and beverages.

County Hotel (Essex) The hotel is in the process of installing biomass boilers to provide 100% oftheir central heating and hot water which will reduce C02 emissions from85,000kg to 11,590kg pa from this source. A power perfector unit installedin 2008 has given them a 15% reduction in electricity consumption.

Four Seasons London at Park Lane (London)In the kitchen, a grease extraction system has been installed to treatkitchen air with ultraviolet light which turns grease into power, making theair emissions cleaner.

Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons (Oxfordshire)In 2013 Le Manoir completed the planting of the Apple Orchard. Currently500 apple trees of 9 varieties and differing ages have been planted inorder to create a roof top orchard. 69 different varieties of apple werecooked and tested in order to identify the right variety of apples required tosustain the needs of the kitchen throughout the year for the variedrequirements of Raymond Blanc and his team of chefs.

Macdonald Windsor (London)The hotel staff has been given piggy banks to fill with small change andthis will be given to Blue Lake Horse Rescue charity. This formed part oftheir Earth Day celebrations where they also gave all guests and 750agents packets of seeds. The hotel also sold a “Greentini” cocktail with10% of the proceeds going to Blue Lake charity.

Trenython Manor (Cornwall)Partnering with the Fowey Festival of Words and Music 2014 which strivedto support a more sustainable community locally. The hotel offered itsproperty and grounds to the organisers of the festival in May, in order todevelop a more sustainable, yet affordable and fun family weekend, withan emphasis on engaging with nature.

Considerate Marketing Initiative of theYear (sponsored by Eco-Pure Waters)

Strattons (Norfolk)Purchase of an orchard for fruit production entirely for the hotel. Areduction in organic waste by scrutinising this waste stream plus 355kg ofcoffee grounds distributed from the hotel to allotments and gardens,getting other cafes in the town involved. Creating a Brecks pop-uprestaurant for the Brecks Food Festival showcasing the best of theregion’s produce & getting local MP Liz Truss & Henry Dimbleby of Leonrestaurants in London to attend and reveal to our diners the newgovernment white paper on school dinners before it hit the national media.Electric re-charging points installed in the car park.

Draycott (London)

Draycott is working with TFL and the Cycle to Work schemes. The hotelhas invested in the Cycle Superhighway Workplace Offering, which meansthat the hotel is eligible for cycle storage, cycle safety checks and cycletraining sessions for staff (for staff not comfortable with cycling aroundLondon). This encourages staff to use a green method of transport whencommuting to and from work.

Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons (Oxfordshire)Raymond Blanc is working with The Society of Garden Designers andGarden Organic whereby they have commissioned a competition to createThe Raymond Blanc National Heritage Garden in the grounds of LeManoir. The competition was conceived in order to raise awareness oforganic gardening methods and the importance of preserving knowledgeand practicing heritage varieties, with the goal of creating the garden usingsustainable materials, upcycling old materials and of course plantingheritage varieties.

One Aldwych (London)Global Garden –growing pods for kitchen herbs – made from waste,recycled containers, specially designed grow pod, to ensure waterefficiency of 90% to that of a conventional planter, containers or growpods. They can be adapted to grow anything, anywhere, using harvestedrainwater, water left over from mineral bottles and ice melt, the idea beingto demonstrate that food can be grown on a roof top in London or a carpark in Delhi.

Park Plaza Riverbank (London)Putting the ‘Social’ into ‘Corporate Social Responsibility: A key focus for2013, along with working towards an accreditation was to focus on thesometimes forgotten community aspect of CSR. One key initiative thatformed part of this was chief steward, Karol Pyra (Green Team member)organising weekly ‘clean ups’ in the park behind the hotel . This is a greatexample of a simple initiative put forward and carried through which makesa tangible difference to the hotel’s neighbours.

Recommended to them by the Dorchester London, the hotel invested in aVITO 80 machine to reduce oil consumption, remove carbonised particlesand achieve healthier fried food. Pedro Da Silva, Deputy General Managerof the hotel comments: “As well as cleaner tasting food, VITO has savedus £137.50 a week on oil, reducing our costs by 55 per cent.

Best Western Old Tollgate (Sussex) They have a strong and active Green Team which promotes energy andwastage reduction, recycling wherever possible and a “green” environmentwithin the hotel and grounds, and is committed to raising awareness of theissues involved.

One Aldwych (London)Children with Cancer affiliation and presentations raised £35,000 forchildren with cancer, from table donations, staff sales, a Bake challengeand sponsorship for the chef running the London marathon. A team of OneAldwych volunteers representing children with cancer attended on the dayto raise awareness.

Considerate Green Team of the Year (sponsoredby Berendsen)

Bryn Elltyd eco Guesthouse (Wales)Becoming Carbon Zero. All energy inputs are from renewable energysources, hence no effect on climate change. Revamping the kitchen wasthe final piece of this intergrated jigsaw. The old gas cooker was recycledfree to a green charity, in line with the hotel’s ethos. The controllableinduction replacement cooker actually turns off when a pan is liftedwasting less energy. This makes the kitchen colder. They revamped the

insulation on the ceiling and closed cell foam insulation on walls at back ofunits. Having chased yet more draughts down in the kitchen timberpanelling, they are now back to the warm kitchen they had before yet arecreating less heat.

Park Plaza Riverbank (London)With a monthly average of 21,331 kg recycled products in 2013 totalling astaggering 255966 kg , the hotel saved : 544 Trees from recycledcardboard; approximately 1,025 cubic metres of landfill ; A staggeringreduction in the cost of waste removal of just over£32,000 over the course of the year – clearly illustrating a vital ROI on theinvestment in the Waste2Water machine and bottle crusher.

Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill Lost property and recycle programmer, where lost property items that arenot collected by guests are given away to local charities, together with

hotel staff organising fund raising events. The housekeeping team raisedfunds for the West London Mission charity for the Homeless by sleepingrough & serving breakfast for the homeless throughout the year.

Landmark LondonAnnual green calendar motivates and encourages housekeeping staff toorganise green activities throughout the year. The most successful in 2013was “World Cancer Day” when with the help from Uniform Room teamthey made homemade ribbons and organised a stall in the staff restaurant.We raised money for Cancer Research UK.

Good Egg Award (sponsored by Con-Serve)It will be announced at the award lunch and will be awarded to a personwho has shown them-selves to be a real patron of sustainability and trulyConsiderate, joining past winners Raymond Blanc, Vanessa Scott, GaryLohan and Richard Slade.
