LinMot Linear Motor Actuator ProductsBy: Pat Morrissey - Automation Engineer - Holland, MI
Kendall Electric is please to re-introduce the LinMot line of linear motor actuator products. Since announced back in January of 2015 by our motion specialist Kurt Disher, there has been some additions and improvements to the line that we feel are worth highlighting this unique group of products again.
LinMot manufactures a complete line of Linear Motors, Guided Actuators, Servo Drives, and the MagSpring constant force magnetic springs. Their main focus is on motor systems for industrial applications. LinMot customers will receive sophisticated products that provide the utmost reliability in linear motion and can easily be integrated into any automation and control systems. LinMot being one of Rockwell’s Encompass partners has
5000 that work with the Compact and ControlLogix platform of controllers that have made this line of linear/rotary motor actuator integrate easily into the Rockwell solutions like never before. These linear motors differ from others in that they are tubular-style linear motors, as opposed to open, track-style linear motors. The tubular style linear motor actually looks and acts somewhat like a pneumatic or electric linear motors. The motors are sealed so they can operate in dirty environments and don’t require any moving cables.
LinMot linear motors employ a direct electromagnetic principle. Electromagnetic force provides direct linear movement without the use of cams, gears, belts, or other mechanical devices. The engine consists of only two parts: the slider and the stator. The slider is made of neodymium magnets in a high precision stainless steel tube. In the stator are the motor windings, the bearing for the slider, the position detection and temperature sensors for thermal monitoring of the motor.
The LinMot Advantage is that LinMot linear motors provide extremely high speed, long life, complete controllability, very long strokes and peak forces to 600 pounds. Product standardization and delivery from stock through a worldwide distribution network help to support their dedication to providing immediate availability and prompt customer support.
LinMot Linear Rotary servo motor units are all electric servo motor technology, use no air and reduce CO2. They have independent direct linear and direct rotary servo motors options that have
programmable torque and programmable press force with speed, force, torque control and feedback. There are also hollow shaft versions, stainless steel versions (AISI 316L), high torque versions, and more than 20 standard versions available today!
One unique product is the MagSpring. Unlike Mechanical springs, they deliver a constant force over their entire working range, with only 2 components: a stator and a slider.
A new product they now offer is the LinMot 316L stainless steel H01-Guides, Direct linear motor technology from LinMot.
Continued on next page...
Thanks to the constant power path characteristic, numerous applications are possible, such as position-independent generation of a constand contact force, the application of a constand holding force over a large stroke range or the unilateral power assistance in driving tasks.

higher continuous forces as well. Units are available in max velocities up to 3.4 m/s (134 in/s) and max peak force up to 496 N (111 lbf). They have a single cable for power and sensors available to make the installation convenient and quick. The units also offer a IP69K design for wash down and CIP, with no seals. All parts are laser welded with sloped surfaces, purging tap, full stainless steel AISI 316L design with hardened AISI 316L rods, and plain bearings with FDA approved material, which make these perfect for the food and beverage industry.
The PR01 motor series combines linear and rotary movements in a single integrated direct drive solution. The two motors are individually and independently driven.
Another unique offering are the ATEX Motors:
LinMot Linear Motors have many products that can help you solve some of your most advanced and challenging engineering opportunities. Please contact your local Kendall Electric Motion Specialist today for a demo and or more information on this exciting line of linear-rotary products to help you stay ahead of your competition.
Working with a higher-level control, high dynamic linear and rotary movement can be realized. These can be programmed either synchronously or independently of each other. Is your repair vendor costing you money?By: Marc Nicosia - Services Specialist - Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia
Can we agree that the role of maintenance, repair and operations is to keep equipment running for as long as possible with as little downtime possible? Every company has this goal, and generally also has budget considerations to adhere to in achieving this goal.
In striving to achieve this goal, companies sometimes select the lowest cost repair provider to save as much as possible per repair, but how much money are they actually saving you? This low-cost repair provider may offer a great warranty at a low cost, and they are fast. How can paying less cost me more?
What is the price for low cost and speed in the long run? Has poor quality of repair resulted in lost production? Have you needed to use their warranty? If so, do they track the warranty for you? Driven by cost savings, I’m seeing more and more customers suffer downtime at the hands of inadequate quality of repair. Our customers have reached out with concerns about the quality of our products and request we investigate their premature failure. There is an expectation that it is a Rockwell Automation product,
generally had multiple failures and the situation quickly escalates into a problem for that company.
Over time I’ve learned to ask one basic question in failure situations
has almost always been yes, we use XYZ repair company. Sure, this is just my observation, but I can’t help but feel like where
If you’ve had multiple part failures, it’s not your fault and you’re not alone. The pressure to save money is great and your vendor guarantees their work so you trust them to do a good job. You don’t track the quality of repair and have no metrics to otherwise say they’re doing a poor job. Often the repaired part goes into inventory with other parts and is lost to the crib. The part may not be used for years and when it is, you simply don’t know it’s a repaired part. All you know is it didn’t work and you need another one. I’ve been told by many customers that when they go to the crib for spares that they know have been repaired they’ll often grab 3 or 4 of them and hope that one works. Then those failed parts are re-repaired and the cycle repeats. What if I told you there was a better way? What if I told you that the same quality you’ve come to expect from your NEW Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley products can be found in remanufactured Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley products? In fact, we often say that a remanufactured item is brought back to as good as new or better condition. How can we claim that? Each Rockwell remanufactured product undergoes a thorough 7-step process that ONLY Rockwell can offer on Rockwell products.
12
Don’t be fooled by imitators. Get your equipment remanufactured by the Original Equipment Manufacturer. The Rockwell Automation Seven Step Remanufacturing Process ensures compatibility and exends the life of your equipment.
Rockwell offers three levels remanufacturing to suit your needs, listed above.
Some Facts:• Warranty on the entire product, not just the repaired parts.• Warranty tracking provided automatically to save you money.• $50 million spare parts inventory.
available from Rockwell Automation on Rockwell product. • Products are fully functionally tested to original engineering
• Full load testing up to 1200HP.Circuit and board level testing. Fully computerized simulation to help identify intermittent problems not readily apparent, to help prevent premature failures. • Global staff of engineering and technical experts at our disposal with many years industry experience. • Probable cause reports on every remanufacture • 500 products repaired daily• 83,000 active and inactive catalog numbers• ISO 9001 for Quality• ISO 14001 for Environmental
Perhaps you’re thinking this is all great for Rockwell products but my plant has a bunch of brand X. I have great news for you. Rockwell takes all the same principles it has learned in its own business and with the acquisition of Lektronix, applies it to Non-Rockwell repairs as well. With over 200,000 Non-Rockwell product sku’s from 7,000 manufacturers in our database, we can likely help you save money.
http://www.rockwellautomation.com/global/services/maintenance-repair/repair-services.page? Still not convinced?Rockwell offers tours of its remanufacturing and repair centers where you can see the process and ask questions. I’d be happy to arrange that for you or you can take a video tour here: http://www.rockwellautomation.com/global/services/maintenance-repair/remanufacturing.page? With the cost of downtime increasing 65% from 2009-2012 according to the Aberdeen Group, talk to your local Kendall Electric team and ask how Remanufacturing can save you the most money in the long run.

Fiber optics is sending signals from one location to another in the
plastic. These signals can be analog or digital and transmit voice, data or video information. Fiber can transport more information longer distances in less time than any copper wire or wireless method.
It’s powerful and very fast - offering more bandwidth than any other current form of communication!
First you need to know the language - the “jargon”. Here’s a list of terms you should know:
The Metric System
Fiber Optics, as an international technology, utilizes the metric system as the standard form of measurement.
Several of the more common terms:• Meter: 3.28 feet, 39.37 inches. Fiber optic cable lengths are generally expressed in meters or kilometers.• Kilometer: 1000 meters / 3,281 feet / 0.62 miles.• Micron: 1/1,000,000 th of a meter. 25 microns equal 0.001 inch.
most of which are 125 microns in outside diameter.• Nanometer: One billionth of one meter. This term is commonly
transmitted light, e.g 850 or 1300 nm.
Fiber
Optical Fiber: Thin strands of highly transparent glass or plastic that guide light. Core:
Cladding: the core and guides it along - even through curves.
Buffer coating or primary buffer coating: A hard plastic coating
termination or splicing.
Mode:
Multimode Fiber: has a larger core (almost always 50 or 62.5 microns - a micron is one one millionth of a meter) and is used with laser or LED sources at wavelengths of 850 and 1300 nm for short distance, lower speed data networks like LANs.
Singlemode Fiber: has a much smaller core, only about 8-9 microns, so it only transmits one mode. Singlemode is used for
CATV with laser sources at 1310 to 1550 nm. It can go very long distances at very high speeds.
Fiber ID: expressed in microns (one millionth of a meter), e.g. 50/125 micron
outside diameter of 125 microns - about 0.005 - 5 thousandths of an inch - just slightly larger than a human hair. International standards
that include bandwidth capability or other special characteristics.
is a large core (usually 1mm) multimode
in consumer HiFi and as part of a standard for car communication systems called MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport).
