Where Did the Internet Come From?

Starting in late 1960’s, multiple computers were linked together for fast academic and military communications.

Scientists started sharing jokes, recipes, and other personal information via electronic mail (E-mail).

In the late 1970’s, large companies realized the power of communicating via linked computers and began developing related technologies.

The World Wide Web was created in 1989 by a British physicist named Timothy Berners-Lee.

Who Uses the Web?

Over 79 million adults in North America use the Internet--40% of the U.S. population.

If this current trend continues, every person in the world would have access to the Internet by the year 2003.

Average time online increased to 9.8 hours per week from 6.9 hours a year earlier.

President Clinton vowed to have every public school classroom in the U.S. wired to the World Wide Web within 5 years.
