Current House & Lifestyle Issues

Humans need fresh-air for a healthy existence, however, people’s current concerns with security issues and energy efficiency can result in the home being closed up like a sealed box.

Condensation, Airborne Contaminants and Toxins in the airThe moisture generated from every day activities around the home can cause a detrimental build-up of moisture and other toxins in the very fabric of the home. These issues are compounded in the winter. Our houses are often sealed up in order to keep the cold air out and retain the heat we have paid to generate. On average a family with children can release in excess of 12 litres of moisture into the air every 24 hours. The amount of moisture that air can hold is dependent on its temperature: the warmer the air, the more moisture it can contain. When this warm humid air contacts a cooler surface such as glass in a window, condensation can occur. On-going condensation can lead to peeling wallpaper, damp furnishings and unsightly mould growth which creates permanent damage to the fabric of the building.

High Asthma & Allergy RatesDamp warm conditions without air movement also provides the perfect breeding ground for the dust mite. The minute house dust mite, which feeds on microscopic fungal growth and dead human skin cells is now acknowledged to be a major offender in allergic reactions. There is a growing body of medical evidence showing that the microscopic droppings of the house dust mite can be linked to the symptoms of asthma, rhinitis and other bronchial and similar problems, especially prevalent in the young and elderly.

Rising Energy CostsElectricity costs are on the rise and with no sign of slowing down, home owners must look into ways to decrease their daily energy use. There is increasing demand worldwide to produce energy efficient products which is why Smart-Vent have invested heavily to create products with low running costs which save consumers money while ventilating their home.

Moisture generated by every day activities within the home:

Cooking 3 litres/day

Clothes washing 0.5 litres/day

Clothes drying 5 litres/day

Baths & Showers 1.5 litres/day

Dishwashing 1 litre /day

Breathing – sleeping person 0.5 litre/day

Breathing – active person 4.8 litres/day

“A build-up of moisture generated from every day activities can cause permanent damage to the very fabric of your home.”

Indoor Air Quality

Condensation & Mould

Control of these issues are dependent on three factors: ventilation, insulation and heating. Modern houses are well insulated and properly heated, with bathrooms and kitchens generally well ventilated. However, a high level of insulation and draught proofing in a modern home means that there is often insufficient air replacement for effective ventilation.

So what can you do to improve your in-door air environment? There are two proven ways to improve your in-door living environment: Heat Recovery Ventilation and Positive Pressure Ventilation Systems.

Smart Solutions

Synergy Heat Recovery Ventilation

Smart-Vent Positive Pressure Ventilation

vsSupply airflow draws drier, fresher air from the roof space which is passed through a filter before being gently distributed around the home via diffusers set in the ceiling at strategic points.

The introduced air positively pressurises the home and displaces moist air generated by human activities such as washing and cooking. The end result is a drier living environment, less prone to condensation and virtually free of airborne contaminants. The system incorporates a supply airflow under pressure, therefore getting it’s name ‘positive pressure’.

This system consists of a supply airflow, extract airflow and a Heat Exchanger. A balanced system is created by extracting stale moist air from the home and, at the same time introducing fresh filtered dry air into the home. The two-air paths flow through a Heat Exchanger which is situated in the roof cavity. As the airflows pass by each other, up to 90% of heat from the extracted air is transferred to the incoming air which is delivered into the home. Synergy offers a 24 hour, 7 day a week ventilation system that truly recovers heat and ultimately saves you money in heating and cooling your home.

SMART VENT SYNERGY

Heat Recovery consists of a balanced ventilation system incorporating both extract and supply airflows to rid your home of moist, stale air and introduce fresh, dry filtered air into your home. The Heat Exchanger recovers otherwise wasted heat produced from everyday household activities and paid heating. These two air paths flow through the Heat Exchanger and as they pass each other, up to 90% of heat from the extracted air is recovered and transferred to the incoming air which is delivered back into the home via diffusers in your ceiling. The two airflows never meet, therefore preventing cross contamination but still benefits from the recovered heat. Controlling your system couldn’t be simpler with the Synergy full colour touch screen controller using state-of-the-art technology.

Features and Benefits of Smart-Vent Synergy

Energy savings begin at homeYour Synergy system will truly save you money while creating a comfortable living environment for you and your family. This system ‘future-proofs’ your home, meeting strict building regulations and guidelines for creating an energy efficient home. Not only will moisture and condensation be greatly reduced but so will your monthly energy bill. The Smart touch screen controller offers up-to-date readings on your energy savings including: dollars recovered, energy efficiency and carbon footprint.

Energy EfficiencyThe Heat Exchanger is the most energy efficient way to help heat your home whilst offering continual ventilation. Synergy benefits from both roof space energy recovery (as discussed above) and true heat recovery. The exchanger recovers energy extracted from the home which in turn heats the in-coming air thereby reducing your heating or cooling costs. So, even on a cold winter’s day when your roof space is cooler than inside, Synergy will still introduce warm, dry, filtered air into your home.

Synergy uses fans which are low wattage DC motors which further adds to your energy savings.

Carbon FootprintA carbon footprint is a measure of the impact that we have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gas (CO2) produced in kilograms (Kg). The ‘footprint’ is what is left behind as a result of these activities. Energy recovery reduces carbon footprint because less electricity, gas or solid fuels are needed to heat the home to the same temperature. The system calculates the Kg of CO2 based on your entered electricity costs and how much heat your have recovered from the exchange process.

Energy Efficiency

Heat Exchanger for True Heat RecoveryAt the core of the system is a Heat Exchanger. This is where the extract and supply airflows pass by each other, the two airflows never meet therefore preventing cross contamination but still benefits from the recovered heat. The exchanger recovers up to 90% of heat from the extracted moist air which in turn warms up the incoming fresh drier supply air before it is distributed around your home. The Heat Exchanger includes an extract and supply low wattage DC fan motor to further save you money. Also included is a drain connection for condensation to drain to the outside of your home.

Heat Exchanger

True Heat RecoveryThere is a misconception in the market that a positive pressure system ‘heats’ the home. With a positive pressure system this ‘free heat’ is generated when the air drawn from the roof space is warmer than the air temperature inside your home, (called roof space energy recovery), allowing you to benefit from this incoming warmer air. But circumstances do not always allow the roof to warm up such as on a cloudy winter’s day.

Synergy Heat Recovery is specially designed to recover heat produced from everyday household activities and paid heating, utilising up to 90% of the heated (or cooled air) to warm (or cool in summer) the incoming air. This means the incoming air will require minimal heating to meet your indoor comfort temperature.

Health Benefits

Health BenefitsThe Synergy heat recovery system actually removes condensation, airborne contaminants and other toxins from the home. By expelling the contaminated air out of the home, it doesn’t get a chance to seep into your furnishings and walls. This creates a much healthier environment for you and your family while saving you money at the same time.

High Grade FiltersThe supply air passes through a high grade F7 filter prior to entering your home.

The supply and extract air also pass through G3 filters to protect the Heat Exchanger. The controller will let you know when the filters require cleaning or replacing.

Heat Transfer IncludedThe Heat Transfer feature is for home owners who have a heat source which creates too much heat for one room. When enabled, Synergy will pull warm air from the heated room (where your controller is placed), first passing through the Heat Exchanger to significantly warm the incoming air before distributing it throughout the home. Synergy will not return this air back into the heated room.

Summer Airflow & Summer By-pass Features IncludedSummer Airflow

In Summer when you no longer wish to bring in warm air from your roof space Synergy will automatically start bringing in cooler air from the outside.

Summer By-Pass Feature

The Summer By-pass feature operates a damper which allows the warm exhaust air from your home to by-pass the Heat Exchanger and therefore not warm the incoming cooler air from outside. This function can be disabled for an air conditioning system where cool exhaust air is recovered, which in-turn cools the incoming warmer air from outside.

Positive Pressure systems draw fresh drier air from the roof space and passes it through a filter before gently distributing it around the home via diffusers set in the ceiling at strategic points.

Smart-Vent systems work off a comfort temperature range (a minimum and maximum temperature that you would like your home to be), set by yourself on your digital controller. The temperature is read from your roof space where the supply air is drawn from. As soon as this temperature falls below or rises above your comfort temperature range (e.g. minimum of 16oC and maximum of 22oC) then the system will automatically react to restore your desired comfort temperature range. This could be turning on your heater (optional extra), dropping to a low fan speed when too cold, or drawing air from outside (when a summer feature is installed) in the warmer summer months.

Filter GradingThe filter is a main component of a ventilation system which contributes towards a better indoor environment. Everyday on average we breathe 20-30kg of air which is why it is essential to filter atmospheric particles that can adversely affect our health. This air can contain household dust, moulds, fungi, pollen and vapour residue.

G4 grade sock filter: Over its life the filter will, as an average, have a 90% arrestance of particles of 5 microns in size and above.

High quality F7 grade induct filters: Over its life the filter will, as an average, have an 80-90% arrestance on particles 0.4 microns in size and above.

* Heat Transfer Upgrade Kits can only be added onto Smart-Vent Models purchased after March 08 which have software version 2.07 and greater, if you are unsure which model you have please contact Securimax.

** When installed with SV06 & SV06S Models the Kit can only connected to 1 branch of the system (there are 2 branches in the system), therefore extracting air from one heat source room and distributing to the other two rooms in that particular branch.

Heat Transfer upgrade Kits*

How it all WorksThis Kit works off your digital Smart-Vent controller which must be mounted in your heat source room to be effective. Set up your ideal comfort temperature on your controller; this temperature is what you would like your warmed room to reach prior to this air being transferred. Once the comfort temperature is reached, as read by the controller with an in-built digital temperature sensor, the system will automatically switch over two different motorised dampers. The first damper stops the supply of air from the roof cavity or outside and instead draws air up from the heat source room. The second damper closes to stop the air being re-distributed back into your warmed room which allows maximum benefit from your excess heat by supplying it to your other Smart-Vent room outlets. Once the warmed room drops 1oC below this temperature the system reverts back to a Smart-Vent ventilation system, supplying air from the roof cavity or outside.

Warm your whole house

Is your lounge too HOT...but your bedrooms NOT?A Smart-Vent system with an added Heat Transfer Upgrade Kit offers the luxury of a combined ventilation and heat transfer system. Heat Transfer works by extracting any available excess heat from one room (your heat source room) and transferring it to your other rooms with Smart-Vent outlets.

Tempering Heater KitIf you wish to temper the incoming air that your Smart-Vent system is distributing around your home, a 1kW heater kit can be purchased, perfect for those cold winter days when you still desire ventilation but don’t want the cold roof cavity air entering your home.
