I have mixed feelings about that statement. I am a little said that the ski season is coming to a close, but also somewhat happy because the golf season is just around the corner. Another sad point is the fact that in another couple of months my 2 nd consecutive term as president of the chapter will come to an end. The silver lining to that reality is that we have a bunch of great events left before the administrative year ends. First, our Mathcounts Banquet is a couple of weeks which looks to be a great event. In keeping with the theme of the future of the engineering profession, members of the Valley Forge and Chester County Chapters will be judging at the Delaware Valley Science Fair in early April. A few short weeks after that we will celebrate the Chapter’s 60 th Anniversary at Maggiano’s. There will be food, there will be beverages and there will be Quizzo! Then just a month later, we will have our first time in a few years golf outing with the Chester County Chapter. I hope that many of you will be able to make it. The proceeds will benefit our scholarship program, so we need a great turnout to support this worthy program. The tournament will be followed by a golfers buffet. It will be a great day, with the exception of my score that is. See you soon! PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By Tony Dougherty, P.E., VFC President

Spring Time is almost here! I have mixed feelings about that statement. I am a little said that the ski season is coming to a close, but also somewhat happy because the golf season is just around the corner. Another sad point is the fact that in another couple of months my 2nd consecutive term as president of the chapter will come to an end.

A few short weeks after that we will celebrate the Chapter’s 60th Anniversary at Maggiano’s.

PICTURE OF THE MONTH

In this Feb. 26, 2009 file photo, the home of Curt and Deborah Sleeper is seen in Festus, MO. The eastern Missouri family expects they'll be able to stay in the home built inside a cave after accepting an offer of a private mortgage contract. Curt Sleeper said Tuesday, March 10, 2009 that a New Jersey-based business, Logical Source Inc., offered a 15-year loan with a low interest rate that should allow the family to keep their home. “GETTING TO KNOW YOU” By Tony Dougherty, P.E., VFC President Since this year we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Chapter, we will try to interview a more “seasoned” member each month to get a different perspective on the Chapter and a little piece of history. This month, Harve Hnatuik, P.E. who is a past president of the Chapter and the State Society! Without further ado, here are the results:

The Compass (TC): So, who are you? My parents named me Harvey Damian Hnatiuk. The “Harvey” came from the Jimmy Stewart movie according to my Mom. The “Damian” came from the Americanization of my Ukrainian grandfather’s first name. The “Hnatiuk”…who knows? I prefer to be called “Harve.” TC: Where do you or did you work? In May 2009, I will celebrate (and I hope Joe Maida does too) my 30th year of employment at Maida Engineering, Inc. I have worked at Maida as an Electrical Engineer, Project Engineer, Senior Project Engineer, Project Manager and as Vice President. TC: How long of have you worked there or been in business? I was a Transmission & Distribution (TC&D) Engineer at Philadelphia Electric Company (now known as PECO Energy) for five years before Joe Maida asked me to be the third engineer to work at his company in 1979. Doing the math, that means I have been “in the business” for nearly 35 years. Wow… do I look that old???? TC: What do you do there? I do what needs to be done to make our company successful. That being said, my time is primarily devoted to maintaining existing relationships with the clients with whom I am working and to looking for ways in which to develop additional business. I like that I continue to do a lot of engineering because it is always great to witness the fruits of one’s labor becoming a tangible reality. Engineering is a tremendous profession for many reasons; one of them, at least in my mind, is seeing concept expressed as drawings and specifications come to life and reality through the dedicated hands of construction forces. TC: Any work accomplishments you would like to speak of? Working with Joe Maida to open and to develop our Boise, ID office in the 1990’s was a thrill. We did many great projects out there for Micron Technology. Developing three projects at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis has been an exciting part of the last few years of my life. Outside of work, I am very happy and fortunate to have had the opportunity to contribute time, talent and treasure in so many areas. Being part of a “team” that raised a wonderful daughter is one thing that I truly treasure. My daughter, Catherine (Hnatiuk) Gow, is a Registered Architect who is building a great career at Francis Caufman Architects in Philadelphia. Her professional success is only part of who she is and what she does. She is a truly special person.

Harvey Hnatiuk, P.E.

Page 6: THE COMPASS - PSPE · April 1, 2009 Delaware Valley Science Fair–Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, Oaks, PA April 8, 2009 Chapter Board of Directors Meeting, Traffic Planning and

TC: Are there other notable employers in your career? Yes, in fact, every place that I ever worked influenced me beginning from my paper route with the Newark Evening News. I remember having to collect money from the subscribers EVERY Friday night and how nice they were to me. Getting a ten-cent or quarter tip in the 1960’s was a big thing. Also, I bagged groceries and stocked shelves for Shop-Rite, dug and backfilled ditches on a construction crew, put roofs on new houses, worked on an assembly line and mixed paint for the elevators that were installed in the Twin Towers. Each experience was valuable in so many ways. And the people that I met and came to know influenced me in many ways. I first learned about handicapping horse races while mixing paint at Otis Elevator in Harrison, NJ for instance! TC: What is your educational background? I graduated from Kearny High School (NJ) in 1970. I was fortunate to become a General Motors Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a BSEE with honors from there in 1974. GM also provided me with a great summer job between my junior and senior years at Penn. I worked as a Quality Control Foreman at is Packard Electric plant in Warren, OH. I could write a book about those three months! TC: What licenses do you have? Driver’s license, amateur radio license (call sign KB3FW) and most importantly, active PE licenses in PA, ID, NC, MA, AK, NV and MO as well as an inactive license in UT. I am in the process of becoming registered in NJ. TC: How long have you been in PSPE? I joined PSPE in 1980, six years before I earned my PE license. TC: With what other technical or professional societies are you affiliated? I’ve been a member of IEEE since 1974. Presently, I am also a member of ISPE. TC: Tell us about your family. My mom just had her 92nd birthday. She lives in Hightstown, NJ (about 30 minutes from where Cyndee and I live in Westampton, NJ). Mom was a stay-at-home housewife but was active as a volunteer at local hospitals. My dad passed away in 1999. He was a great automobile mechanic and owned a service station until he became disabled in 1969. I worked with him at the service station during the summer and on weekends at times, pumping gas, doing oil and filter changes, changing spark plugs, or whatever he could teach me to do. I have two brothers. My older brother, Greg, owns and operates Scotch Plains Music Center in Scotch Plains, NJ. He is an awesome musician and composer. My younger brother, Vic, retired from the USAF as a Colonel after flying F-16s and R4’s among other aircraft. He now flies for Citation Jets. My wife, Cyndee, works for AJJ which is an association management firm that specializes in nursing organizations. Cyndee is the Executive Director of two national nursing organizations and one certification board. She has a bachelors and masters degree in Nursing and a doctorate in Education. God blessed me when she came into my life. I already mentioned my daughter, Catherine, who is a jewel in my life. I also have two grandchildren (Lauren, 8 and Ryan, 4). They are, of course, brilliant… as are most peoples’ grandchildren.

Page 7: THE COMPASS - PSPE · April 1, 2009 Delaware Valley Science Fair–Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, Oaks, PA April 8, 2009 Chapter Board of Directors Meeting, Traffic Planning and

TC: What are your hobbies? I enjoy thoroughbred horse racing, astronomy, politics, reading, writing, music, sports and I hope to get back into ham radio soon, as well as model railroads: two hobbies from my past. TC: What is your favorite quote? “Give me liberty or give me death.” TC: What is your favorite equation? V = IR TC: What is your favorite book? There are MANY, here are a few by category: Fiction – “The High and the Mighty” by Earnest K. Gann Series – “Left Behind” by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins Non-Fiction – “A Man on the Moon” by Andrew Chaikin Sports – “The GM” by Tom Callahan TC: What or who inspired you to get into engineering? I became an amateur (ham) radio operator when I was 13 and through my local radio club met a number of people who were involved in technology. They suggested that I consider engineering as a career. My high school guidance counselor also told me that it would be a great career for me. The space program and its emphasis on technology were perhaps the biggest influences outside of people in my life. TC: What year did you join the Valley Forge Chapter? 1980 TC: What is your most memorable meeting event? Date/year? Mathcounts Banquets have been very memorable. The banquet at which we had a speaker from NASA’s Goddard Space Center was great as were Derrick Pitts from the Franklin Institute and the engineers from the Helicopter Museum. TC: How has the chapter changed/evolved over the years? As I am nearing the 30-year mark as a member, I have seen the Chapter go through highs and lows and can’t really see a true evolution. Currently, it is great to see younger engineers involved on the Board and in the Chapter’s leadership as well as the high level of involvement of members from several engineering firms who encourage their engineers to be involved. Thanks Harve for participating!!!

Free PDH’s from NSPE

NSPE has a new member benefit: All members now have the opportunity to earn four free professional development hours from four online ethics courses. The information is currently on the NSPE homepage and at http://www.nspe.org/Education/WebSeminars/index.html . In the coming days and weeks, we'll be spreading the word through other channels as well.

The courses are:

Engineering Ethics and the Law: Contract Documents and Procurement of Engineering Services (ONL-009)

Engineering Ethics and the Law: Contract Documents, Intellectual Property & Professional Liability (ONL-012)

Engineering Ethics and the Law: The PE as an Expert Witness (ONL-013)

Ethical Engineering and Fair Trade: Conflicting Interests (ONL-018)

At the end of each seminar, a quiz will be available for those who need it to meet their state's continuing education requirements.

New NSPE Member Benefit From: Larry Jacobson, Executive Director Re: NSPE New Member Benefit: Salary Survey Yesterday, NSPE launched an exciting new member benefit. It’s one that you’re already familiar with, but it now has a new approach that will provide yet another valuable reason to be an NSPE member. As you may know, for many years NSPE published its own salary survey, then in 2003, we began a joint salary survey with ASCE, ASME, and other groups. Several months ago, we decided it would be in our members’ best interest to take our version of the survey in a new direction. NSPE again fully owns and operates its own survey, just like it did from 1952 through 2002. This gives us flexibility in pricing and distribution. The big benefit for members is that by simply participating in the survey, they will receive free, unlimited access to complete survey data, not just a complimentary page or two of results. In addition, if they complete the survey at http://nspe.enetrix.com by March 31, they will be eligible to win one of two $200 American Express gift cards. Obviously, the more participants we have, the stronger the cooperative becomes and the more valid the survey results. Our competitors sell similar data for as much as $600. As an NSPE member, you get it all free! All you have to do is contribute your data to the online survey database. The change will be seamless, and members who have previously completed the survey won’t notice a difference with the Web interface at http://nspe.enetrix.com. Also, the salary data that was previously entered via the NSPE site will be maintained, so we’ll just pick up where we left off.

Page 9: THE COMPASS - PSPE · April 1, 2009 Delaware Valley Science Fair–Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, Oaks, PA April 8, 2009 Chapter Board of Directors Meeting, Traffic Planning and

For those who are not members, or are members but choose not to participate in the survey, here’s the pricing model: ●NSPE Member/Survey Participant: free unlimited report access for 12 months. And you’ll renew another free year by paying your dues and participating in the free survey! ●NSPE Member/Nonparticipant: $150 unlimited report access for 12 months ●Nonmember/Survey Participant: $375 unlimited report access for 12 months ●Nonmember/Nonparticipant: $595 unlimited report access for 12 months We have started notifying the full membership about the new survey, using all NSPE communication vehicles, and we ask that you help spread the word and encourage participation. And if you haven’t contributed data for awhile, please do so and get your own complete set of salary data.
