Lisa was a very sweet naïve teenagerwhen she was taken from me just overtwo years ago. She was 18 years oldand just coming into being her ownperson. We were very close and “Ilove you” was as common in our con-versations as “What’s for dinner?”Her hugs were as big as her heart andI was extremely fortunate to be ableto hear her say “I love you, Mom” onthe night of her accident.

I was devastated beyond what Ithought my heart, body and soul

could stand after Lisa’s accident. I walked as if in afog for days which turned into months and thenbefore I knew it, it was a year.

I was irritated that the sun still rose and sadder stillwhen the sun went down and another day had gone by.I just knew in my heart that I would never be able tolaugh with genuine glee or smile again. I had my son,Lisa’s brother, who was 16 at the time and still, that didnot seem to matter. I was unable to see “the light at theend of the tunnel.” I was carrying a heavy burden and Iwas convinced that nothing was going go change.

I started school full time to become a nurse and myache was still there, the holidays came that first yearand my grief was like a shroud.

But something happened when I least expected it.I laughed at a joke my brother told. The guilt I felt atlaughing made me cringe inside, I shouldn’t be laugh-ing, I told myself. I should still be grieving! But a few

weeks later, I smiled when I woke up after hearingsomething on the radio! I was starting to see things thatI hadn’t seen in months! I was seeing color again! I wasable to stand up straight and not feel the weight of sad-ness. I still looked (and continue to look) for girls mydaughter’s age, but I could feel my lips turn up into aslow smile while remembering something that Lisawould have said or done to make me laugh.

The turning point for my grief came and surprisedme with the same spontaneity as sprinklers turning onin the hot summer sun!

The guilt that I would feel when I caught myselffeeling good again was also something I have had todeal with. I wondered if it meant that I missed Lisa orloved her any less!?

No, what has truly helped me is time. For somepeople “time” happens quickly and for others likemyself it took a long while, but the day that I realizedthere is still sunshine, hope and that I no longerwanted to join my daughter (just yet) was a day I willalways remember. I was able to take deep breaths intomy lungs rather then half breaths.

Do I still miss Lisa? With pangs that are some-times hard to bear. I give into those times, as I alwayswill, but now I know there is “light at the end of thetunnel” and I am living in it.

No debería estar ríendo,me dije.

Me

¿Todavía extraño a Lisa?
