MENS SHED 2019 On the 17th of December Bruce Hien and WayneMiller were invited by the Streaky Bay Tourism &Business Association Committee to give a talk on whatwe do and what we plan to do later on. It was a very goodmeeting, with plenty of feedback and ideas for the future. The Men’s Shed ended a successful 2019 with a BBQ on the 19th December before our break overChristmas. The BBQ was attended by 12 members andtwo visitors. Lyn Finch (President of the SBTBA) andHeather Scantlebury from the Op shop. Invitations were sent to other people in businesses andthe Council. Unfortunately the BBQ fell on the same dayas the last council meeting so some could not make itover this busy time. On New Years Eve we ran a BBQ for the children’sfestival/fireworks. From a profit side of it the night was asuccess. Thanks to all that helped on the night. We mustalso thank the Council for the loan of the marquee again, and to the organisers for a job well done. On New Years Day we manned the gate at the PerlubieSports Day sharing with the Dragon Boat Club. 2020 All Men’s Sheds throughout SA have been asked if theywould like to make up some bird nesting boxes andpossum boxes for animal rescue people for the wildlifeaffected by the KI bushfires. This will be a good project tostart the year off. We now have some racks to store woodon thanks to John Wilson for making them. Thanks toKeith (Sandy) Johnson for making a sign up for openingtimes. We have been given bikes from the Op shop that we havecleaned up and sold to some people. If anyone has oldbikes they would like to give us to repair for them or to onsell then just contact us at the Men’s Shed. We are still collecting old spectacles, these can bedropped off at the Op shop.

Streaky Bay Kids - Australian Open Experience Eva Schmucker and Jack Kelsh from Streaky Bay haverecently enjoyed the trip of a lifetime at the 2020 AustralianOpen Grand Slam Tennis in Melbourne. Eva and Jack alongwith Ashton Hartwig (Cleve) and Ruby Wauchope (Whyalla)were chosen to represent Topseed Tennis SA againstTopseed Tennis VIC. The results from recent tournamentsin Whyalla and Streaky Bay were used to select the players. All players had to be 13 years and under.Top Seed Tennis Victoria is owned and run by YvonneFantin. Yvonne this year won the Newcombe medal asAustralia's Best Coach. Yvonne is viewed as TennisAustralia royalty by her fellow coaches because of hersensational coaching programs and the total communityinclusion offered by Topseed's 6 Coaches. This inclusion ofall the community is an example Tennis Australia is ecstaticwith. Tennis is now Australia's 2nd most participated sport.Shane Kelsh is a coaching colleague of Yvonne's as theyhave been coaching juniors at the Australian Open for thelast 4 years together at Melbourne Park. Shane was coachof Topseed SA Team. The two teams were to play on theclay courts at Melbourne Park on Tuesday of week one ofthe Open. Unfortunately for the kids the rain poured downand the matches were abandoned as the clay courtswere too slippery. The children then were able to walk down the tunnel of fameonto Rod Laver Arena in front of 20,000 spectators onMonday night for the Novak Djokovic match. After watchingthe world number one warm up from court side the kidsjoined their parents in Rod Laver Arena to watch both worldnumber ones play their matches Ash Barty and Novak. OnTuesday night the kids went onto Margaret Court Arena andwatched Aussie Jordan Thompson and Fabio Fonnini warmup then sat in the stands to watch the 4 hour match end in athriller. The team also went to Melbourne and Collingwood AFLtrainings at Gotch's paddock which was a great experience. It was particularly good at Melbourne as the team watchedlocal Eyre Peninsula lads Kaide Chandler (Penong) andHarry Petty (Wudinna) training at full pace. Unfortunately forKaide he broke a bone in his arm during training afterlanding awkwardly.Yvonne and Shane have committed to making the matchesan annual event at the Australian Open and in Adelaide onthe Clay at Memorial Drive. This is a great opportunity forEyre Peninsula kids to play high standard tennis on asurface they don't normally get to play on.

Cool weather not a dampener on   The Streaky Bay Tourism and Business Association hosted the Family Fish Day on Sunday 5th January. Theevent had been scheduled for Saturday 4th however inclement weather resulted in changing to Sunday 5thJanuary.  The cool Sunday morning didn’t deter the 134 children that registered. Over 200 people were inattendance with participants coming from as far away as Slovakia, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.  Allcommented on the positive sense of community spirit in Streaky Bay and what a great family event toparticipate in. The fishing competition was ‘Catch and Release’ and only a couple of Anglers were seen kissing their fishgoodbye in Rex Hunt fashion.  The range of species caught on the day was a good indication on the healthof the seafood in the bay. Crabs, Tommy Ruffs, Trumpeters, Rock Cod and Whiting being the mostcommonly caught. Everyone was a winner!Largest Catch of the Day - Angler 10 - Conner Habel hooking a 460g Strong Fish and winning $100 for hisefforts. Nigel spent months talking to suppliersto arrange the goodie bags content. He managed all the logistics, provided the bait and even cooked theBBQ.  Nigel’s efforts, together with the generosity of our Sponsors,  made the event cost neutral for ourAssociation, which is greatly appreciated.  This enables us to keep this as a FREE community event.”  Family Fish Day will be back on again next year and is planned for Saturday 9 January 2021, weatherpermitting! Streaky Bay Tourism & Business AssociationPO Box 209 Streaky Bay SA 5680e: [email protected]: www.streakybay.com.au

EXTRA LEVEL OF PROTECTION IN PLACE FOR ENDANGERED SEA LIONS

The Australian sea lion is one of the rarest seal species in the world, with the entire population estimated at lessthan 14,000 individuals, and declining on average around four percent per season across their range. Due to theirvulnerability to disturbance, colonies are largely restricted to remote, offshore islands, many of which are situatedoff the coast of the Eyre Peninsula. South Australia is well and truly the stronghold for this species, with 85% ofthe total population found in our waters. Jones Island (Baird Bay Islands) Conservation Park at the mouth of Baird Bay has recently been declared aprohibited area, in order to restrict disturbance to the breeding cycle of the Australian sea lion colony. It is nowillegal to land a boat on, or to embark on the island by foot. The main reason for this is that the area that isaccessible to boats and people, is also the same area the sea lions give birth to and raise their pups that whennewborn cannot yet even swim. In recent years increased visitor numbers, combined with far reaching social media, has resulted in substantialpressure on the Jones Island colony. From a National Parks and Wildlife Service perspective at the end ofthe day it’s about appreciation and respect for our unique wildlife and beautiful natural areas. There is no betterway to gain an appreciation of our amazing environment than to immerse yourself in it. However, do so in arespectful way that doesn’t harm others that are just doing their thing. When out for a spot of recreational boating people need to be mindful of the Marine Mammal Regulations. Theregulations are in place to protect animals from disturbance and humans from being harmed by defensiveanimals. To help Australian sea lion populations to recover we ask that you admire them from a distance and donot approach the animals; · Vessels must not anchor within 150m of a sea lion· Vessel must not approach within 50m of a sea lion· If a sea lion appears to be sick, stranded or disturbed, vessels must maintain a distance of 150m· Swimmers must not approach closer than 30m of a sea lion. If you want to experience an up close and personal encounter with Australian sea lions, there are accredited touroperators across the Eyre Peninsula who are permitted to take people to swim with the sea lions. For further information regarding Marine Mammal Regulations contact the Streaky Bay National Parks and WildlifeService office 8626 1108.
